Got a t-shirt in the mail today from client Paul Oelerich, editor of Utah Adventure Journal. The shirts are for the magazine's sponsored racing team and features an illustration I did for them awhile back for an article titled "Mountain Men Don't Wear Hot Pink." Very cool of them to send me one and I will wear it proudly once the weather warms up a little more! Thanks Paul!

New York Toy Fair display illustration

I recently completed a giant display illustration for TeeGee Toys, who will be first-time exhibitors at the 2012 New York Toy Fair this Feb 12-14. At 10'x8' it is literally the biggest job I've ever had! I'm super excited that my work will be on display at one of the coolest events in the world. Below are some shots of me with the final display before it has its debut in NY.

A personal piece I did has been featured in the latest FoundXposed newsletter. The theme was "portal" and submissions were specifically requested to be from our personal work. I was especially fortunate to be the only illustrator featured, although I hope in the future more illustrators will get some love!

This was an alternate idea for the cover. I thought of giving the book more of a 50's retro feel, but the AD preferred the first version. I still kind of like the simplicity of this one, though.

Here's a piece I did for up-and-coming hip-hop artists (and friends of illustrators everywhere!) the MoonTravelers for their latest CD The Traveler. The CD features a booklet of illustrations for each track on the album, done by a variety of illustrators. I haven't gotten my copy yet, but I'll be sure to post an update once it arrives. My piece is for the track "Fly Me To The Moon."

New Work, New Look For Outdoor Utah

Here's my latest work for Outdoor Utah. The art director had a couple of specific ideas in mind and asked for color sketches for each. Above is the final one that was chosen. I went with a bit of a Japanese woodblock influence.

This is the other image, which I liked enough to finish it even though it wasn't chosen. This one is very heavily influenced by my former college adviser and amazing illustrator Robert Meganck. It may in fact be teetering on "blatant rip-off," but I've been wanting to do a Meganck-style illustration for awhile now.

Below are the initial pencil sketches with digital color added.

Outdoor Pirates of the OBX

This month's map for Blue Ridge Outdoors covers the Outer Banks of North Carolina and is a fun departure from my usual approach. The features highlighted for the article cover the full length of the OBX, which gave me the perfect excuse to go for a bit of a pirate map look, with the treasures being the various locations.

Did these sketches of a nice couple I met earlier in the year when I was in Bali. They really loved the sketches and asked me to send them a copy once I got home. But, life got busy and before I knew it, many months had gone by. So I finally got them sent, but not before adding a nice sepia tone and more of a paper texture to the background in Photoshop. I really kind of like how they came out and am tempted to do this treatment to some of my better sketchbook entries.

Summit Brew Illustration

I got to illustrate the header image for a brand new website called SummitBrew.com, started up by outdoor journalist (and beer-drinker) Jared Hargrave. The premise of the site is for contributors to climb a peak, and once there drink an exotic beer, then later write a review of both.

For the image, I ended up going for the look on an old, weathered, painted sign from the 50's, or possibly an old style tourist postcard.

This is the original approved sketch.

This the inked drawing, which I did at roughly 3'x13'. Its times like this I love Photoshop's photo merge feature. The landscape changed quite a bit once I looked up some actual reference images for Utah. Note I originally showed the guy with a six-pack, but changed it when the client pointed out the safety hazards of mountain climbing after that much consumption.

Here is the final again with the six-pack magically transformed into a healthy whole wheat sandwich and a back of chips.

Illustration Friday: Toy

UPDATE: Here's the final piece in glorious, living color! Below is the pencil version.

Basically the idea for this is how kids can turn just about anything into a toy and be totally happy. I know I wasn't the only one who ever got some big new toy for Christmas or a birthday, played with it for ten minutes, then went off and played in the box it came in for hours.

I really like how this came out, so will try to finish it and post an update soon. Any feedback is welcome!

Latest Cartoon Maps for Blue Ridge Outdoors

These latest maps feature the new direction I'm taking. Basically, all the features will be squeezed more closely together giving a more lively feel and allowing for more color variety. That may not sound like much, but believe me, it makes a big difference. Not only do the maps look ten times better, they're also even more fun to draw!
