The English-language debut of festival favorite Midi Z, the feature boasts an all-star creative team and will launch sales at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Sam Worthington and David Duchovny have joined Taiwanese actress Ke-Xi Wu to star in The Exiles, the English-language debut of festival-favorite filmmaker Midi Z. A buzzy expat crime thriller inspired by true events, the film is currently shooting on location in Taipei with a multi-Oscar-nominated production team, including cinematographer Ed Lachman (The Virgin Suicides, Carol, El Conde), editor Hank Corwin (The Tree of Life, The Big Short) and composer Lim Giong (Cannes best score winner for The Assassin).

The film is said to follow “a desperate Westerner’s pursuit of greener pastures in Asia, where greed, rivalry and ego ultimately spiral into a shocking murder.”

Mister Smith Entertainment has boarded The Exiles for international sales and will launch the title at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, with CAA representing U.S. rights. The film is being positioned for a top-tier festival launch later this year.

“An unrelenting crime thriller that grips from the first page, The Exiles marks Midi Z’s first English-language feature and a confident expansion of his distinctive visual style onto the international stage,” said Shane Kelly, Mister Smith’s senior vp of international sales. “Anchored by an exceptional caliber of cast and creative collaborators behind the camera, the film unites auteur ambition with a muscular genre narrative.”

Midi Z was born in Myanmar but came of age in Taiwan, where he has built a career as one of the territory’s most distinctive filmmakers. His breakthrough came with the edgy drug drama Ice Poison (2014), which premiered in Berlin and later became Taiwan’s official Oscar submission. He followed that with the immigrant saga The Road to Mandalay (2016), which launched in Venice, and Nina Wu (2018), a psychological thriller that bowed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.

“The Exiles has been an exhilarating new experience for me as a filmmaker. It reflects the tumultuous world we’re in, and follows a character’s quest to begin a new life within it,” Z said in a statement issued from set. “I took inspiration from real crime incidents in Asia to weave together a tale of contradicting forces — love and exploitation, greed and fragility, darkness and hope.”

He added: “It’s my great privilege to create with this amazing team, from Sam and David, to my longtime collaborators Ke-Xi and Lim Giong, to Ed and Hank behind the camera — all of whom I’ve long admired — and to be able to bring this special production to my hometown of Taipei.”

The director co-wrote The Exiles with Ke-Xi Wu, his frequent collaborator and past lead of Ice Poison, The Road to Mandalay and Nina Wu, as well as the 2024 Berlin Golden Bear contender Black Tea, from Oscar nominee Abderrahmane Sissako (Timbuktu).

Producers on The Exiles include Anita Gou (The Farewell), Tom Heller (Foxcatcher), Claudia Tseng and Midi Z, with Killer Films’ Christine Vachon (Materialists, Carol), Gabi Meyers (A Different Man) and Wu executive producing. The film is being made with support and financing from the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA).

The Exiles adds to a busy lineup of projects for Worthington, who can currently be seen worldwide in his iconic role as Jake Sully in Avatar: Fire and Ash. He will next appear in David Mackenzie’s thriller Fuze, Netflix’s Harlan Coben series I Will Find You and Alejandro Monteverde’s feature Zero A.D.

The ever-versatile and prolific Duchovny, meanwhile, is currently in Sundance supporting his co-starring turn in Jay Duplass’ ensemble drama See You When I See You, alongside Kumail Nanjiani, Kaitlyn Dever, Lucy Boynton, Cooper Raiff and Hope Davis. He can also be seen on Prime Video’s psychological thriller series Malice, opposite Jack Whitehall and Carice van Houten — as well as on The X-Files and Californication reruns worldwide. In mid-2024, he also launched his podcast Fail Better, about failure in all its forms, and published a collection of poetry, About Time, last fall.

For David Duchovny, the appeal of his new psychological thriller Malice was its gripping tale of retribution, writes Siobhan Duck

THERE’S no better place to stage the ultimate revenge act than in the Greek Islands, says David Duchovny. The US actor’s psychological thriller Malice was filmed on the island of Paros, and sees the former star of The X-Files playing brash venture capitalist Jamie Tanner, whose perfect family life is white-anted by their new “manny”, Adam (British actor and comedian Jack Whitehall). What Adam has against the Tanners, and the disturbing lengths to which he will go to wreak havoc on their lives, slowly plays out over the six- episode series.

Not only did Greece provide an enviably picturesque backdrop for the ugliness of Adam’s antics but, as the birthplace of Greek mythology’s goddesses of vengeance, the Furies, the setting felt especially apt.

“Talking about revenge and Greek drama, to be able to go to the origins of Western culture and to see these places that I’ve only ever read about, and to see the places where these myths originated, and to see the place where drama originated – as an actor, it was all very impactful on a conscious and unconscious level for me,” Duchovny says.

While many may well heed the warning that “revenge is a dish best served cold”, screenwriters still find it a hot topic for delicious drama. And the reason is its relatability, says Duchovny.

“It’s just something in human nature that wants justice, right?” Duchovny suggests nonchalantly. “We want to see justice served, and we like poetic justice, don’t we? We like people to be punished in the way that they’ve transgressed, as well. So I think it just goes back to our roots.”

While the 65-year-old actor has made a career out of playing confident renegades – the most famous being Fox Mulder across 11 seasons and two films of The X-Files, and self- destructive writer Hank Moody in the 2007 to 2014 drama series Californication – he insists he’s far less sure of himself in real life, and nothing like his character, Jamie.

“He’s very certain of his philosophy of life – and of his life. I’m always kind of shocked at people that have that kind of certainty,” he says. “I thought:

Oh, because I don’t have it personally, I’d like to try to live in those shoes for a bit; that must be nice. I’d like to try to live a life where I thought all my decisions were correct, and my way of raising my kids was correct, and my way of doing business was correct.

“And then, over the course of the show, everything gets punctured,” he explains of

Jamie’s story arc. “I thought taking him from that certainty to uncertainty would be fun.”

While Duchovny’s signature schtick has been keeping a poker face even when his characters are in outrageous situations, Malice shows him taking clear pleasure in exploring the cracks in that facade.

“I wouldn’t say that I’m really great at sprouting tears on cue, but I can get to that point,” he says of the more emotional scenes.

“You have your secrets as an actor that you call upon to get you in a certain frame of mind that you think is appropriate for the scene. But there’s no telling whether that’s going to work on the day. And also, things that used to affect me in a certain way no longer affect me in the same way.”

While he prefers to keep his emotional triggers private, Duchovny says there’s one particularly traditional go-to for many actors: “People do tend to cry easily over their pets.”

Having written four novels, a novella, a graphic novel and a collection of poems, Duchovny says he approaches any acting role with a keen interest in dialogue and story pacing – a little too much so at times.

“I think I can be a bit of a pain in the arse on set,” he admits with a laugh. “[ Malice screenwriter] James Wood would tell you

I worry about things a bit that way. Not in a horrible way.

I just want it to be the best that it can be. I’m not trying to be a contrarian.”

Duchovny has always railed against being pigeonholed. It’s one of the reasons he chose to end his time as a series regular after the seventh season of

The X-Files. It’s also why he’s branched into making music and recording podcasts. But rather than seeing himself as a Renaissance man, Duchovny says his many and varied pursuits can be attributed to a restless personality.

“I’m never quite satisfied,” he explains. “And I don’t mean that in a perfectionist way. I’m just always looking for different modes of expression, different ways of getting at creativity, because the medium or the instrument that you’re using – whether it’s as an actor or you’re writing or you’re directing, or

[it’s a] conversation as a podcast or music – is going to change what you’re saying, it’s going to change what comes out. And I’m endlessly fascinated in that.”

David Duchovny is back on our screens for Malice and is looking super-fit at 65, but the X-Files and Californication star tells M&F that he wasn’t always a fan of lifting weights.

For Prime Video’s new psychological thriller, Duchovny plays a rich dad who hastily appoints a mysterious nanny, played by Jack Whitehall. And—as the six gripping episodes unfold, it soon becomes clear that the nanny has bad intentions for the very family that he’s been entrusted to support. The show, partially filmed in Greece, required Duchovny to appear shirtless but at 65 years young, this professional actor’s consistent effort to stay in shape meant that he was never nervous. Still, a love of lifting weights didn’t arrive until his 40s.

David Duchovny Had to Shun Prejudices to Lift Weights

Before he became the man who many people still know and love as Fox Mulder on the 1990’s smash-hit series The X-Files, Duchovny was a standout basketball player at Princeton University. “I was always playing a game,” Duchovny reflects on his youth, but as he matured, life began to get in the way of the sporting life, just like it does for so many of us. “In my 40s, my kids were starting to get older, they were going to school, and I was working a lot, so I didn’t really have time to play those games,” he explains. “And so, it became, ‘well how do I keep my body fit in the time that I’m allotted now?’”

With a starring role in Californication, the beloved actor spent a great deal of time semi-naked and understandably wanted to be in shape for the screen. To that end, Duchovny set up a gym in his garage but initially had a conflicted view of lifting weights. “I had never been a gym guy,” he tells M&F. “I always, like, looked down on those guys. Like, ‘Those are fake muscles,’ and ‘I only like the muscles that actually can play the game.’ That kind of s**t. And, even when I was playing basketball especially, they would tell you not to lift weights. It was back in the day when they were like, ‘No, you don’t want to get muscle-bound.’ So, I had these kinds of prejudices in my mind against the ‘gym workout,’ but I grew to love it.”

Duchovny Stays Consistent to Always Be Screen Ready

These days, Duchovny has a collection of resistance machines in his garage and is able to blend muscle building movements with functional exercises like pullups, medicine ball work, the bench press, and even a Pilates style reformer. Duchovny works out six times per week and now has a completely different attitude toward pumping iron. “But I grew to love it,” he shares. “I really love the kind of pain and the challenge. And as I get older and older too, it’s necessary. With Californication it was like, ‘Ah, s**t, I’m gonna have my shirt off a lot, it’s part of the job, I should probably get in good shape, but now it’s a health benefit for me at this point.”

Duchovny has long been a details man when it comes to his nutrition as well, opting to eat very little meat and reaching for a more pescatarian-based diet. He’s also mindful about where food is sourced from and often fasts between his evening meal and the next day’s lunch, aside from a protein loaded coffee. Fortunately, this lifestyle, and the love of gym workouts that Duchovny developed via Californication are paying dividends now. In Malice, the star once again goes sans shirt. So, how much notice did he get for that? “I think I must have been able to tell from reading the script,” explains the actor, who dances half-naked in one glorious scene. “There was no dialing it in,” he shares of prepping his physique, thanks to his trusty ‘stay ready to be ready’ mentality, and the fact that he wanted the character to appear authentic. “But certainly, you know, I’m as vain as any other actor, so I wanna look okay,” he laughs.

David Duchovny Loves to Stay Active Between Scenes

Also in shape for his sinister role as the family nanny is Jack Whitehall, who shed his comedic persona and got buff for the Malice project. The two actors were able to play tennis between scenes in Greece, and Duchovny says that Whitehall has developed a serious love for Padel. The guys even did pushups on set to stay pumped.

For recovery, Duchovny tells M&F that he regularly takes a cold plunge. “It’s not good for pleasure,” he jokes. “But you know, even that, I would say is part and parcel of working out, because ‘No Pain, No Gain,’ is the cliché, but when you put yourself in painful situations, or you put yourself in stressful situations, I really see it now as a rehearsal for real stressful situations. An ice bath is not a real stressful situation in life, but it is stress. And I think that it’s important to make friends with stress and know that you can kind of sit through it.”

US Weekly: 'Malice' It’s Better Than ‘The White Lotus’

From The White Lotus to Patricia Highsmith‘s Ripley books, I can’t get enough of rich people being made to suffer. Prime Video’s newest show, Malice, is right up that same alley. It stars Jack Whitehall as a young man who ingratiates himself with a wealthy family for nefarious purposes.

It’s a delightful and dramatic slice of soap opera thriller, and Watch With Us thinks it should be your next binge-watch.

Here’s why I think Malice is better than The White Lotus and most “rich people are bad” mystery shows streaming right now.

If the past few years are any indication, pop culture content that depicts awful rich people getting their just desserts is what the people want to see — let’s not think too hard about why that is. At any rate, Malice follows Jack Whitehall’s Adam, a tutor who worms his way into being a male nanny (or “manny”) for the much wealthier Tanner family.

The Tanners are led by businessman Jamie (David Duchovny), who is not the best dad to his kids, Dexter (Phoenix Laroche), Kit (Harry Gilby) and April (Teddie Allen), although he still seems quite hot and heavy with wife Nat (Carice Van Houten). If you enjoyed movies like Saltburn or shows like Ripley and The White Lotus, there’s a lot here to enjoy. Gorgeous locales, a family with money-induced brain-rot and a suspicious little guy intent on getting revenge against them.

And yes, while The White Lotus is great, season 3 was a major letdown and left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Malice is even better than that season because it sets up an intriguing mystery and delivers on it. There’s no false red herrings, no obvious suspect and no loose narratives that lead to nowhere — instead, it tells a relatively straightforward revenge plot with an anti-hero you root for.

David Duchovny Plays a Jerk You Can’t Help But Like

One thing Watch With Us is gonna do is we’re gonna watch a show starring David Duchovny. Most people are familiar with Duchovny from his iconic role as Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but the guy is a fantastic actor, and funny too. He particularly excels at playing charming or impish a-holes but in a very nonchalant way, and Duchovny is in fine form, conveying this type of personality in Malice with plenty of wry humor.

Jamie Tanner is a dick, and yet it’s hard to hate him, partly because he is given some redeeming qualities. But a lot of that redemption can be chalked up to the way Duchovny plays him. Duchovny also does a great job at evoking the cruelty and carelessness of men who are so rich that petty irritations still manage to get the better of them, despite nearly all their problems otherwise being solved with their money.

It’s Fun to Watch Horrible Rich People Suffer

Watching a show like Malice can be incredibly cathartic, because while it’s so delightful to watch horrible people get what’s coming to them, it’s more fun when they’re wealthy. People who have a lot of money often feel like their wealth shields them from retribution for bad behavior, or even emboldens it — meanwhile, the rest of us, the lowly proletariat, just have to sit back and take the abuse.

Even though Adam’s motives are left unclear for much of the show, it’s entertaining to watch him spin webs, lay traps and just basically terrorize the horrible Tanner family (Jamie, in particular) in very quiet and calculated ways. He tosses Jamie’s passport into the ocean, poisons food and even flirts with Nat to try to disturb the sanctity of Jamie and Nat’s marriage. Malice combines audience fascination with luxurious lives and the nagging desire to see someone set it all on fire.

The Show Keeps Things Vague Until the Very End

From the jump, Adam is very calculated in his plan to gain the trust of the Tanner family, so we know that he is motivated by a grudge. At one point early on, Adam stands over Jamie, drunk on the ground, and says, “I could kill you right now if I wanted. But I’m not going to do that. Because I want you to suffer, just like I did.” For what reasons Adam suffered remains unspoken until closer to the season’s conclusion.

Keeping Adam’s motivations unclear might frustrate some viewers, but it also allows for Malice to keep people hooked and guessing until the very end — when Adam’s plot is finally revealed in full. Why reveal all the cards so quickly? And at only six episodes, there’s not much waiting to do either. Malice is fantastically bingeable, and the reveal is well worth the wait.

The six-episode series, which premiered yesterday on Prime Video, shows Duchovny as Jamie Tanner, a wealthy businessman, an Whitehall as Adam Healey, a tutor, who get caught up in a deadly love triangle (as Duchovny says in the series, “She has the taste, I have the money”).

The costume design of this dark series was by Buki Ebiesuwa, who previously worked with Patricia Fields and Nick Gordon, among others. The series starts off on a luxury Greek holiday for the Tanner family, until a charismatic, creepy Whitehall disrupts the mix.

The series was shot in the Lefkada island, off mainland Greece, near Ianos Bay, and Duchovny as the weather Jamie Tanner gives off a Jeff Bezos vibe. He’s stylish but in a “I don’t really care about style” way. He wears patterned shirts, simple attire and commanding blazers.

“We worked with our costume designer Buki, who has tremendous style. I personally have very little style. I don't trust my style. Let's just put it that way.”

He does notice the contemporary cuts of menswear, however. “In the series, I’m wearing this kind of like, classic cut, that finance people seem to wear now, it was super tight,” said Duchovny. “Everybody wears suits like they’re going to a prize fight now. and they' have to strip off this suit that's just so fitted.”

It could even be called “Bezos chic,” that sense of effortless style. “Well, it's on the right network, then,” he adds.

Shooting in Greece was profound for Duchovny, who had never visited the country before. “I had never been to Greece before, but I was an English literature major, so all the stories, all the plays, they're all in there,” he said. “Their mythology is our mythology, it’s the mythology of Western cultures. I was there at this place where it all began, and also that how small it was, it’s just amazing to think about this small place. A few thousand years ago, it created this vibrant storytelling culture that we're still grappling with.”

Duchovny is also the host of a Lemonada podcast called Fail Better. The topic of failure is central to this series, too. “Failure is the great teacher, its the only teacher, I think,” said Duchovny. “I think what we realize through the podcast is that success, it kind of numbs you, in a certain way. It doesn't make you more inquisitive. It doesn't make you more alive to the world, but failure does.”

While Duchovny is a Golden Globe-winning actor known for his dramatic roles in The X-Files, Twin Peaks and Californication, Whitehall, on the other hand, is a comedian. He does has written and performed five standup comedy tours, he plays roles on British series, like Fresh Meat and Bad Education, and even shot a Netflix travel series with his father, Michael Whitehall (an acclaimed author and theatre agent), called Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father.

“It was a real challenge and, as an actor, you can get a little bit typecast and I've had a lot of fun doing comedic roles, but I've always really pined after the opportunity to get to do something completely different,” said Whitehall.

“The biggest challenge was that it was quite a demanding part in terms of playing a character that's very competent at a lot of things. I'm used to playing characters that are quite incompetent and are fools, kind of light.” Like Adam, Whitehall speaks different languages, recites poetry, is in great shape, a great cook, bartender and dancer. “There was a hell of a lot of prep and a lot of trying to make sure that I could be adapted, all of those things on the screen. So, it was quite exhausting from that point of view, and it definitely left you going, ‘Oh, yeah, it's a lot easier to play sort of idiotic fools.’”

But there is a lot of depth to comedy, as well. “It’s quite technical and analytical and that's certainly the way that I've always approached it,” he said. “So, I was definitely able to use some of those tools for how I approached this part and also, you know, the show is dark and there is some dark humor and wit to it, as well.”

The costumes that Whitehall wore in Malice were dapper and chic. “We really wanted to get his look right, his style showed how he felt ‘set apart’ from the family. They're in all their designer clothes and we wanted him to feel like he is the outsider.”

Adam’s style in the series is simple, dapper and understated. “He is this sort of interloper that comes into the Tanner family’s world and makes sure that he had a distinct look against the kind of palette of the Tanner family; he was the cuckoo in the nest.”

Some viewers may draw a parallel between Whitehall’s character of Adam and the role of con artist, Tom Ripley in the 1999 film, The Talented Mr. Ripley. “That was definitely a reference,” said Whitehall. “When you look at the lives of wealthy families and the people that bring them down, that was certainly one. I also referred to 1980s thrillers to draw inspiration from, as well as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Hitchcock’s Psycho.”

There is one memorable scene where Whitehall dances for a local Greek village. It was a specific folk dance to Greece, which he trained for weeks. “I worked with Patsy, our choreographer, in the studio in the UK, trying to get all the moves right. But when we filmed in that actual Greek village, we invited all the local townsfolk down to be extras and to be part of it, so it felt authentic,” he said. “Suddenly, I was surrounded by lots of people that knew this dance far better than I did, and they were interjecting and trying to give me tips on how to put it off and how to make it feel more authentic.”

Whitehall remembers one moment: a local village man said to him: “You know the key to unlocking this dance? You need to have a couple of shots before you do it because no one has ever attempted this dance sober.”

Whitehall took a couple of shots of Ouzo, “which I knocked back,” he said, “and then the next take, everything was so much better, like, I freed up all my body and I think that was the one that ended up using.

Coming from an entertainment industry family, Whitehall has looked up to his father throughout his career. The best advice that his dad has given him about the industry was this: “My best advice that my dad has given me is probably your career is defined by the jobs that you say no to, as much as the jobs that you say yes to, which I think, was a way of just getting me to be thoughtful and selective about the work that I do.”

Charlie Sheen said fatherhood quickly occupied his life when he got sober eight years ago.

“It turned into just an interesting daily grind of just sudden responsibility and, you know, having to answer the call and it was amazing,” Sheen said Monday, telling an audience that once he “finally put down the bottle,” his children started coming to his home.

Sheen sat down with actor and writer David Duchovny during an event at 92nd Street Y, New York on Monday to discuss the writing process behind his memoir, “The Book of Sheen,” his journey through sobriety and his passion for acting.

The actor battled addiction throughout his decades-long career. Writing about it candidly, as he does in his book set to be released Tuesday, took years of self-reflection, he said.

Sheen grew up on film sets and began creating home movies as a young child, before getting his big break starring in movies like “Platoon” and “Wall Street.” His decorated career in Hollywood, however, was accompanied by decades of drug abuse, legal battles, an HIV diagnosis and messy divorces.

“I’m a good guy,” Sheen said. “Good guys sometimes do some bad things but the only way to stay a good guy is to own that (expletive) and move forward.”

How Sheen’s memoir was brought to life

Amid jokes and lighthearted prodding, Duchovny applauded the memoir, which he described as “not vindictive at all. There’s no animus against any other person in the book, even yourself, which I really appreciate. Not just your gentleness with other people, but your gentleness with yourself.”

The book chronicles Sheen’s life from a near-death experience during his birth in 1965 to the moment he decided to get sober in 2017. It carries a unique writing style, with certain words purposefully misspelled and instead written the way Sheen sees them in his mind, he said. Dude, for instance, became “dood.”

Sheen said he was inspired by the narration and rhythm in “Apocalypse Now,” the 1979 film his father, Martin Sheen, starred in.

“I wanted it to feel like the reader was kind of in the room with me or at the small dinner party hearing this story,” he said.

His drug addiction and recovery is at the center of the book and addressed in the latter half of the discussion. Sheen spoke on the “intense sexual component” of a lot of the drugs he grew reliant on, including cocaine. When substance abuse is “the first bridge you build,” the actor said, “that’s the one you’ll keep walking across.”

Sheen said he figured out early on that alcohol helped calm his stutter, which had negatively impacted his acting, and it turned into “the most difficult drug for me to deal with.

“The only part of the drinking that I could navigate was the first hour,” Sheen said. “But, it’s the next 500 hours or just the next 12 hours. So, once I can just abandon that fantasy of living inside that hour, then it is not a big deal.”

Sheen struggled to answer whether he’d be open to acting in the future, noting that “writing the book was the most challenging job I’ve ever had and hands down the most rewarding one.

“It was incredible to have a job where I didn’t have to get approval ... it’s just you and the page,” he said. “Maybe I need to write the next thing I act in.”

Netflix documentary will unveil never-before-seen home movies

Sheen’s career began young, making home movies with childhood friends like the Penn brothers, Chris and Sean, in the Malibu, California, neighborhood he grew up in.

Clips from the movies, which had previously only been enjoyed by family and friends, will be featured in Sheen’s upcoming Netflix two-part documentary, “aka Charlie Sheen,” which will be released Wednesday.

The movies, Sheen said, had simple plots, often revolving around a crime, a villain and someone seeking revenge. They were filmed on old cameras with props handed down by his father, Martin Sheen, and the Penn brother’s parents, who were actors and directors themselves.

“Everybody was surfing or skateboarding or doing other stuff and we just found a way to, just kind of emulate or mimic or copy what our parents were doing,” Sheen said.

The documentary, which includes interviews with Sean, felt like “the perfect place for them to finally be put on full display,” he said.

David Duchovny is officially a married man! WATCH THE INTERVIEW BELOW.

While appearing on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on Sept. 3, the actor shared the exciting news.

The 65-year-old didn't offer up many details about his nuptials or his bride, but he did confirm that he recently tied the knot when Savannah Guthrie brought up the topic.

"By the way, you got married this year," she said. "Congratulations!"

"I did, in February. Thank you," he replied.

Duchovny, known for his roles in "The X-Files" and "Californication," didn't mention his wife by name, but he has been linked to his longtime girlfriend, Monique Pendleberry, since 2017, per People.

Fourth hour guest co-host Willie Geist couldn't resist asking the actor, who is publishing his debut book of poetry called “About Time,” if any of his poems are directed toward his wife.

"No, no," he said. "You know, it's funny, I was checking the Amazon sales on the way here this morning, and it said I was No. 1 love poet, which is the funniest thing. That's just such a joke because there's no other love poet out there. So I'm one of one."

Duchovny was previously married to Téa Leoni from 1997-2014 and shares two children with the actor: a 26-year-old daughter named West and a 23-year-old son named Kyd.

Duchovny and Pendleberry have managed to stay mostly out of the spotlight in recent years but have made a few public appearances together. In 2023, they were seen together on the red carpet at the Tribeca Festival.

The couple were also spotted looking cozy at the Los Angeles premiere of "You People" that same year.

In a 2024 essay for The Times, Duchovny opened up about why he loves mornings and some of his thoughts on love.

He explained he likes to get up early because he sees that time of day as his "best thinking and writing hours."

"I love the sunrise but it also means I can get some work done before the sun gets too much. That’s the best time of day for me," he said.

He also shared what his daughter thought of his 2023 movie with Meg Ryan, "What Happens Later."

"My daughter, West, thought it was great to see a romantic comedy film with people my age, but I don’t think of myself as any age, so I hadn’t thought about that. Love can happen at any age, right?" he said.

Actor, writer, musician, and now poet. David Duchovny, known to audiences for his roles in Californication and The X-Files, turns his attention to something more intimate, poems that wrestle with love, loss, memory, and the passing of time. It’s a meditation on what it means to grow older, to look back, and to wonder what still lies ahead. I spoke with him recently about his book About Time. David Duchovny, welcome to the NewsHour.

DAVID DUCHOVNY (Author, About Time):

Thank you for having me.

GEOFF BENNETT:

I couldn’t help but laugh at the way you open your book. You write: “I know what you're thinking, just what the world needs now, a bunch of poems from an actor.” What drew you to poetry at this point in your career?

DUCHOVNY:

Well, I have been writing poems my whole life, really, and just stuffing them in drawers. And so this collection really represents probably at least 20, 25 years of just writing poems when they come to me. The preponderance of the poems are more recent, but there's some old ones in there. So it's just something that I have always done and been interested in.

GEOFF BENNETT:

And do you also say that: “Poetry is not useful, and that’s exactly why we need it.” Why?

DUCHOVNY:

Well, this idea of use or utility, it's interesting to me, and especially educationally. We want to get educated to be able to work, to have a job of some kind. But we have kind of, which is great, and it's necessary. But we have lost sight of educating a mind, how to think, or a soul, how to feel. And the disciplines like English literature, I feel, and philosophy are the disciplines that educate the soul. So that's not useful. That's not considered useful anymore to learn how to think.

GEOFF BENNETT:

Yes. And poetry often asks so much more of a reader—slowness, attention. You find utility in that?

DUCHOVNY:

I find mystery in words. I find mystery in expression. And the more mysterious you can make your words, not intentionally, but just because it's so difficult to put your finger on the deepest truths and the deepest emotions that we have, then the truer that it is. So, the mystery that you're talking about, I think, is inherent in the poetic enterprise, which is, how do I say what can't be said?

GEOFF BENNETT:

What are the central themes that tie this book of poetry together?

DUCHOVNY:

Like I said, they encompass like 20 years of my life, so there's the death of parents. It's not going to sound like a real joyride when I go over it, I think, obviously, the death of my father, my — the death of my mother as well, the birth of my kids, the raising of my kids, and then, yes life, death, birth, all the big-ticket items, you know?

GEOFF BENNETT:

Twenty-five years, is there a specific poem that feels most personal to you?

DUCHOVNY:

I mean, they're all very personal, but that — to me, that's not — the allure is not what is personal to me. What — the allure of writing a good poem is, how can I make what's personal to me personal to you? How can I write something so personal objectively enough so that you feel like it's about you? There are poems that are more — in this collection, more tied to times in my life maybe that are — that are — feel more emotional to me, like the birth of my children or when they were young and trying to figure out, how do I teach them, how do I reach them, how do I raise them? There's “Carbon Canyon,” that poem which I like very much, which is where I'm walking with my daughter, who's about 3 or 4 years old, and we come across a carcass of a field mouse, and start talking about life and death. Being a young father, I think, oh, this is a great opportunity for me to teach her about death and impermanence and all those things. And I start to, but she doesn't see it that way. And then, as I lean down further, I see all these ants going in and out of the carcass. And it's terrifying to me. It's gross that now that I'm in this conversation and now I have got to tell her about the way we're all eaten and worm food. And it's just — it's too much, I know. And so I go to take her away from the spectacle of it. And the end of the poem goes, she says: “Daddy, look, the ants, there's so many of them.” I say: “Yes, I see. Maybe we should let the mouse sleep, let her sleep.” I take her hand to lead her, though I don't know where. I know I am blind and unprepared, a child leading a child. And the little one stops and smiles and points back to the carnage: “No, the ants, daddy, the ants. Look how much they love her.”

GEOFF BENNETT:

How does your creative process in writing poetry differ from writing novels or music, which you have done, screenplays, even acting?

DUCHOVNY:

The poems, I mean — ideas come from anywhere, and they kind of announce themselves. And it's up to the maker to figure out what's the form, what's the best form for that thing, that idea, that feeling that came. So that's something I will ask myself, like some big ideas or like plot ideas, and I'm like, oh, that's a movie or that's a novel. Some smaller ideas are just thoughts or feelings or even a phrase, a turn of phrase that catches me. And I will go, well, that's a poem or a song. That's — it's like a strobe light. It's just one moment. It's not an epic poem. It's not the Iliad or the Odyssey. It's really just a small shot in the dark.

GEOFF BENNETT:

Having written these poems over the last nearly three decades, what has it taught you about yourself?

DUCHOVNY:

That I keep trying to figure certain things out, I think. I think, in the introduction, I say a poem is very optimistic, because it's setting out to say something that can't be said and hoping that maybe this time I'm going to say it right. So, I think I remain kind of committed to seeking and committed to try to say things right or to try to figure out myself or the world around me. So I would say that maybe I don't appear to be the greatest optimist in the way I present myself, but I would say that the fact that I continue to write poetry or believe in it is optimistic.

GEOFF BENNETT:

David Duchovny Debuts New Poetry Book In North Jersey - August 2025

Duchovny, who starred as Agent Mulder on the hit sci-fi series "The X-Files," will be signing copies of his new poetry book "About Time" at Bookends in Ridgewood on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.

In "About Time," Duchovny explores love, the loss of love, parenting, his own parents, alienation, and other emotional quandaries, according to a synopsis.

"Poetry is not useful. And that is exactly why we need it. It reminds us of two important things: our ultimate lack of agency and our inability to say anything plain, our inability to capture what it means to be human with the imperfect tool of words," Duchovny said. "We come face-to-face with our shadow selves, for in the end we will all die and be forgotten, and come away with nothing, nothing in the way of utility anyway, no talking points, no bullet points, no propaganda, no resolutions, no policy, no knowledge. If anything, maybe we remember a few lines . . . something like a pop song from the collective unconscious, something like wisdom."

Duchovny has previously written several novels, a novella and a graphic novel.

Tyne Daly Shares Why She Wasn't at Brother Tim Daly's Wedding to Téa Leoni - August 2025

Tyne Daly says she has no hard feelings about not being invited to her brother Tim Daly's wedding when he married his longtime love Téa Leoni last month.

The former "Cagney & Lacey" star, 79, told People that the couple's ceremony was so intimate, even she didn't make the cut.

“There was a small wedding. Very exclusive, very, very private... They only had people that they gave birth to or people who gave birth to them," explained the six-time Emmy winner.

The newlyweds, who co-starred together in the CBS political drama “Madam Secretary,” tied the knot in their “beautiful apartment in New York,” said Tyne Daly, adding that the bride and groom would also host a party to celebrate their nuptials with additional loved ones.

Tyne Daly added that she had plans to see her brother, 69, and her new sister-in-law, 59, “quite soon” because she was making a “Christmas present” for Leoni.

As for the nature of the gift, Tyne Daly told the publication, “It’s a secret. I can’t tell you what the present is. Nobody likes surprises anymore.”

Tim Daly and Leoni tied the knot on July 12, Leoni’s rep previously confirmed to TODAY.com.

The couple met on the set of “Madam Secretary,” which aired from 2014 to 2019. Leoni starred as Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord. Daly played her on-screen husband Henry McCord, an ethics professor and former Marine.

The couple made their red carpet debut, appropriately enough, at the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Leoni shares two children — daughter West Duchovny, 26, and son Kyd Duchovny, 23 — with her ex-husband, former "The X-Files" star David Duchovny.

Tim Daly and his ex-wife, Amy Van Nostrand, also share two children: son Sam Daly and daughter Emelyn Daly.

David Duchovny is revealing why he has yet to write his former or current wife a poem, despite penning an entire book of them.

The X Files alum, 65, opened up about the subject while chatting exclusively with Parade ahead of the release of his seventh book and first collection of poetry, About Time: Poems, which hits bookshelves on Tuesday, Sept. 2. He was previously married to Téa Leoni from 1997 to 2014, and he tied the knot with longtime partner Monique Pendleberry earlier this year.

“I would not do that. I would not dedicate [a poem to my partner]. I’ve only ever once dedicated one song, and that was to [actor and comedian] Garry Shandling. It’s on my second album [Every Third Thought],” he says. “But no, I don’t like to call attention in that way because it doesn’t have form. The poem has to work in a world where these things don’t exist, where I don’t exist, where my personal life doesn’t exist. Or else, it’s just kind of a prop that I don’t believe in.”

As for his book, Duchovny tells Parade that the collection of poems explores a wide range of topics, from love and the loss of love to parenting, his own parents and other emotional quandaries.

“Some of these things are quite very old. These are just things that I’ve been writing for 20 or 30 years. I just kind of — I’ll write a poem,” he explains. “There are times when I’m writing poems more than not. I’ve lost a bunch that I’ll never find, that may be good, that I’ve lost and it may be bad, I’m not sure. They represent, really, all the poetry that I’ve been writing over a few decades.”
