Google Buzz is here!

Google Buzz is Google’s latest attempt to become more relevant to social media. As an add-on to Gmail, it’s very similar to FriendFeed and Facebook, Google Buzz has created a big buzz on Twitter and the blogosphere.

How to use Google Buzz on mobile?

Visit http://www.google.com/buzz on your iPhone or Android device, you will be taken to a WebKit-optimized interface.

If you are using iPhone, tap on the “+” sign at the bottom toolbar, and select “Add to Home Screen” to add an Google Buzz icon to your home screen.

If you are not already logged in to Google, you’ll be asked to log in, or else you’ll be taken directly to this main Buzz screen below.

Here, you can do the following:

• View Buzz from the people you follow
• View Buzz from nearby locations
• View your own posts
• Find other people

Location, Location, Location
It’s clear that the mobile component, especially around location, plays a big role in Google Buzz. I found it fun to see buzz from nearby locations on a map.

Are you going to port your existing iPhone/iPod Touch apps to iPad?

As iPad is out, iPhone developers should think about what iPad means to us.

Differences: iPad vs. iPhone/iPod Touch

• How frequently people use it: while people tend to use iPhone/iPod Touch app for short period, few seconds or minutes during the day, the iPad encourages longer sessions, once or twice a day.
• Target demographic: iPod Touch is spreading on the younger demographic of middle and elementary school; the iPad will appeal mostly to people in 30s and older.
• Physical size: iPad is large, and you are not going to keep it in pocket.

I also don’t think porting existing iPhone/iPod Touch apps to iPad is the right way to go. iPad will be a better device for reading eBooks, playing turn-based board games, painting, web browsing…etc.

A common mistake developers make when trying to bring an application to another platform is trying to bring down the whole application verbatim and shoehorn it into a device. This never works satisfactorily because of the usage differences between iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch.

Think differently.

Apple iPad has officially been released! And there’s an official iPad website up and running.

iPad’s specification:

• SCREEN: 9.7-inch IPS LCD screen. The LCD provides the backlighting, but most of the technology is IPS, or In-plane switching. This gives it a stronger viewing angle than most screens.
• RESOLUTION: 1024×768 pixels (132 pixels per inch)
• SIZE: 0.5 inches thin.
• DIMENSIONS: 9.5 inches x 7.5 inches x 0.5 inches
• WEIGHT: 1.5 pounds (1.6 pounds for 3G)
• CHIP: 1 GHz Apple A4 chip. They went in-house instead of going to Intel.
• MEMORY: Three models with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB solid state hard drives.
• INCLUSIONS: Accelerometer, Microphone, 30-pin connector, Compass, full capacitive multi-touch, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 3G access on higher-end models
• BATTERY LIFE: 10 hours at full blast. On standby, it will last over a month.

I am disappointed that Apple didn’t mention anything about iPhone during the “Come to see our latest creation” event. But even more surprised that iPad comes without a camera – this means no video iChat, no Skype video conferencing, no quickly snapping a pic of whatever and uploading it to Flickr/Facebook/Picasa/etc, no augmented reality.

Yes, you can’t always get what you want. But does the lack of a camera in iPad means a lot to you? Let us know in the comments.

Here’s how I used Facebook Connect on iPhone.

Setting Up A Facebook Application

You will need to get following two elements to authenticate for Facebook API access from iPhone

• API Key: this key identifies your application to Facebook. You pass it with all your API calls.
• Application Secret Key: Facebook uses this key to authenticate the requests you make. As you can tell by its name, you should never share this key with anyone.

First, add Facebook’s Developer Application to your Facebook account.

1. Visit the Developer Application page
2. Click the Allow button

Next, go to Developer Application page and add a new application.

1. Click the “+ set up new application” button at the top of the page
2. Enter an Application Name; read the Facebook terms and, if you agree, select the Agree radio button; click Save Changes .

First, download Facebook Connect for iPhone SDK

Next, Check out the documentation to get started.

I also found a great tutorial from Mobile Orchard very helpful. It explains how to implement Facebook Connect on iPhone (login, status update) and comes with a sample xcode project.
