So again the Sharks come out flat against the Islanders, but again they rebound, and come back to win. It’s not a strategy that will work against the Rangers, who are currently 7-1. I hope the excitement of playing in the Big Apple will help everyone avoid the early sludge that has become a Sharks hallmark. Malhotra and Ortmeyer used to play there, and they know what it will be like in that building. Certainly the players that have played on the East Coast for a time like Joe and Heater know what that’s like. I hope they can get the younger guys up for it, because this isn’t Tom Renney hockey. It’s John Tortorella hockey now- vigorous puck pursuit, and lots of body contact. If they come out like they did against the Isles, it won’t be 0-1, it’ll be 0-4 in a heartbeat.

Also, an interesting discussion here with Doug Wilson for something called the Positive Coaching Alliance. Not really anything Sharks-specific, but a general discussion about how you instill values in youth players, and what kind of characteristics you look for (and work towards) as an elite player in any sport. I think it’d be particularly interesting to those who have young kids playing (or looking to play) hockey.

Don’t Be Fooled by the Caps plus Luko on KNBR

On the surface, it looks like the Kings really took it to the Capitals last night in LA. First of all, they scored two empty netters, so this really was a 3-2 loss where the Caps were playing without the NHL’s leading scorer in Semin and their top defensemen, Mike Green, on the 2nd night of a back to back. The Kings hadn’t played since Sunday, so they were just sitting and waiting for a banged up Washington squad to drive across town and take their lumps.

I hope that Semin and Green are back on Saturday night. I don’t want any excuses. I want the Sharks to face the best every team has to offer, night after night, because it can only make them better on this long quest for Lord Stanley. I’m looking for a healthy Caps teams, with Semin and Green, to take the ice for the dramatic return of Nabby in the nets. I think we will certainly see Shelley vs. Brashear and a tussle of two of the most high power offensives the NHL has to offer. Sharks win in a barn burner, of the Philly/Chicago variety.

Take a listen to Brad Lukowich on KNBR He had a great interview with Fitz and Brooks, who are coming around as hockey fans. Ralph Barbieri has been a long time Sharks supporter, but it seems like the rest of the Bay Area sports superpower station is coming around. I love Luko’s comment about the team playing with a certain kind of arrogance. He also talked about how this is best group of guys he’s ever played with. For a guy who’s won TWO Stanley Cups…..that says a ton.

Two things you don’t expect to hear in the same sentence are hockey and public radio. But the most recent episode of “This American Life” (episode available on mp3 until next week) opens the episode titled “The Enforcers” with one of the most fearsome enforcers of all time, Joe Kocur. The hockey stuff really only lasts 4 minutes or so, but it’s worth a listen. Not really illuminating, especially if you read The Code, but hell, what else do you have to do?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how sad is it that I listen to a show on NPR? Don’t answer that.
