Kansas City Pioneers on path of success in esports

Graham Bowlin sensed time slowing down around him as he avoided the danger onscreen.

Traveling at hundreds of virtual miles an hour, and with a four-car wide finish, Bowlin used all the training he had garnered since age 14 and hammered hard on the pedal.

The finish line played out in front of him, and with a burst of speed, Bowlin shot forward and managed to earn a spot in the Champ Four of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series held in October at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Bowlin earned third place.

Bowlin, from Houston, is one of about 15 total professionals that played for the Kansas City Pioneers in different esports in 2024. They are believed to be the first esports teams to be officially adopted, and are considered the “fifth” sports team in the eyes of Kansas City.

They even have a Kansas City Pioneers Day, which is July 21.

“I was completely exhausted afterwards,” Boyd said. “It was a close one.”

The Kansas City Pioneers, founded in 2019, is comprised of gaming, esports, media, marketing and serves as a talent recruiter. They saw an incredible increase in attention during COVID.

Bowlin said he proudly wears his “QuikTrip” and “Price Chopper” logos on his racing gear as he strives to compete for the esports community of Kansas City.

The Kansas City Pioneers compete in eNASCAR, Rocket League, Apex Legends and Brawl Stars among others.

They make a positive impact by working with the boys and girls club, helping young minds dream beyond racing and into virtual car design, or racing fashion or any of the numerous esports elements that can be personalized.

Bowlin said he has a “pit crew” of 15 teammates, who constantly strive to make the car faster.

KC Pioneers’ Director of eNASCAR Darius Boyd said that many iRacing drivers have gone on to become successful NASCAR drivers.

“The reason we built this organization in the Midwest is because we realized gaming was underserved in our community”, said co-founder Sam Kulikov. “If we didn’t build the Pioneers here, in Kansas City, then the Midwest would not have the chance to participate fully in the gaming industry."

The esports market worldwide - in which players and teams with major sponsors compete for big dollars in front of a worldwide audience - is projected to reach a revenue of $4.3 billion this year, according to Statista, which also projects that number to grow to $5.9 billion by 2029. The U.S. alone accounts for slightly more than $1 billion itself.

Recognized by the Kansas City Area Development Council as an official Kansas City sports team, Kulikov said, the KC Pioneers are building the city’s reputation in places civic leaders likely never could have imagined.

A recent Rocket League tournament in Dallas, for example, drew fans from Kansas City down to the Lonestar State “to cheer on their own town, their own city,” Kulikov said.

“One of the things that make the Kansas City Pioneers so special is that we are one of the few teams that champion our city in our name. Most teams do not have a direct tie to a city like Kansas City and that allows us to compete in ways that many cannot - in hometown pride.

“We started in 2019, and, to date, we have raised almost $2 million in pre-seed round,” he said. Kulikov. They plan to start their $3 million seed round soon, and it’s “designed to fund our vision to change the way that gamers, creators, and athletes interact with fans, brands and communities.”

“This year, three out of the four of our rosters all qualified for their world championships respectively,” he said.

The KC Pioneers Rocket League roster even beat one of North America’s top teams – Gen G - at the Rocket League World Championship in September.

Kulikov said competitors like Bowlin are hard to find. “Only four drivers qualified out of 40 to go in person, and our driver was one of them,” Kulikov said.

The KC Pioneers are also ranked second in North America in Brawl Stars. That team already qualified for the Nov. 1 world championships in Finland.

Gaming is a new “national past time” with more than 200 million gamers – or 61 percent of the country - getting into the action.

“We’re eliminating roadblocks,” Kulikov said. "It doesn’t matter what your background is, or if you’re athletic. We’re involved in a movement that includes educators, parents and a real sense of community pride.”

National esports Association President Lori Bjorek said the Pioneers will encourage other cities to create their own squads.

“Not many realize that esports are being looked at as an Olympic sport,’ Bjorek said. “Young people are earning university scholarships, and there’s some great educational value in esports and video games.”

Local noted companies like Garmin and Cerner have esports teams that compete in the Corporateesports Association, a group developed to raise money for various charities and to foster at-work team building.

“You may remember the company softball leagues that companies use to have,’ said Florian Helff, CEO of the CEA. “It’s similar to that, and it’s been very effective for several Fortune 100 companies such as Ford for growing camaraderie. We help to dig wells, get video games to children in hospitals, the players get to choose their charity.”

As for the future of the KC Pioneers, they hoped to continue to grow their appeal to Gen Z, the largest esports age group, and capture more trophies.

“The future is here and it’s in gaming,” Kulikov said.

REVIEW: “West Wing” is great political throwback to simpler times

I’VE BEEN A POLITICAL JUNKY since the late 1970s. I voted in grade school during the 1980 election, and watched “The McLaughlin Group” with my dad into my teens.

By the time I voted in my first presidential election, I was an informed voter. I didn’t hate opposing lawmakers; I simply preferred other choices. Yet, the only political sitcom I could recall was “Soap.” I loved it, but the satire only fueled my desire for a TV show that was somewhat realistic.

Entered NBC’s award-winning drama, “The West Wing.” The TV series, which aired in 1999 until 2006, follows the working - and often personal - relationship between the commander in chief - the president, played by Martin Sheen and Jimmy Smits - and his public affairs staff, including his chief of staff.

Warner Brothers recently released, “The West Wing: The Complete Series” October 1st for $139.99 for the Blu Ray edition (DVD version was released in 2006). It contains all seven seasons, including two special episodes (one is a Sept. 11th flavored show that feels like an infomercial about diverse instead of a regular episode and a documentary episode).

The series gave viewers a small glimpse into how the White House handles critical events, political squabbles and even assassination attempts. It seamlessly transitions between characters - from the Oval Office, to the chief of staff, then to the press secretary and then to the mess hall, then back to the Oval. The series kept all the gears and cogs keep humming.

Presentation is much better than the original broadcast resolution (likely 480i).

The series settings include the White House, campaign stops, government buildings. Several settings are outside and bright, but the interior lighting varies between decent and barely passable and muddy.

My review copy is Blu Ray (DVD boxset was released in 2006) and presented on 28 Blu Ray discs. The outer slipcover is made of thick cardboard. The cases have a storage system that is unreliable. Upon initial opening, a few discs slid out of the case. The small amount of glue does not secure the discs.

Also inside the seasons 1-4 case is a guide to the boxset’s contents.

Synopsis: “The West Wing” is a phenomenon political drama that is a perfect throwback to simpler times, in light of today’s unconventional world of politics.

The verdict? 9.5 (out of 10)

The series still shines in this 25th anniversary boxes. The only chinks in this otherwise amazing TV series is the disc storage system. If you can look past this, you’ll have a gem.

“Hairdresser Simulator,” developed by Frozen Way, is a life simulator that lets players serve customers at virtual hair salons. Gamers will need to pass hair lessons, use profits to buy a salon, upgrade equipment and hire staff.

Gameplay: Gamers start “Hairdresser Simulator” as a student at Geordie’s hair salon. Afterward, gamers are able to buy their own hair salon.

Players use the right trigger to access the tool menu. Gamers hold the RT button to select the tools needed.

For example, to straighten a customer’s hair, players will need to use the right thumb stick and follow the instructions.

Players’ first hair salon: When gamers arrive at their virtual hair salon, players can expect to clean and spend funds buying furniture and equipment. Then, players can go into the in-game menu to schedule clients, buy equipment and purchase property.

After players clean their salon, gamers will learn how to cut client’s hair. There are many lessons players need to complete to be hair professionals, even the next Paul Mitchell!

Sound: The upbeat music in “Hairdresser Simulator,” unfortunately, fails to match the game’s tone. Hair salons are often trendy; the music here is anything but.

Voice acting is good. Scissors and clippers sound very good.

Sandbox: The game mode, SandBox, lets players create and customize their own character. Gamers can experiment on their characters with unlocked hair tools, before trying styles in their salons.

Graphics: The graphics are good. The hair animations look realistic. The customers look very good, as well as their movements.

Overall, “Hairdresser Simulator” is an entertaining game that can bring out gamers’ creative side. If gamers want to play with hair styling or be a virtual hairdresser in their own salon, “Hairdresser Simulator” fits that bill.

VERDICT: 8 (out of 10)

“Forza Horizon 4”, DLC motors toward delisting

Microsoft’s open-world racing simulation, “Forza Horizon 4”, world expansion acts and associated content will be delisted off the Microsoft Store, as well as Valve’s Steam storefront, according to sources.

First noted by the Web site, press-start.com, Playground Games is planning to put their game, “Forza Horizon 4,” will be removed from digital platforms in December. Plus, there are changes coming to the game’s Festival playlists.

A couple packs here, some DLC can make your gaming experience a costly affair

It starts off so innocently.

You started playing a hidden gem, a diamond in the rough. Before you realize it, you’ve invested 25 hours - or more - into the game experience. You hit the e-store, just for a trinket that can express your personal touch on a character. However, you end up with just a pound or a couple dollars for an in-game item.

Then, there’s a story expansion for just $20. The DLC promises to expand the already epic experience to a new level. Plus, go ahead and snag the free in-game skins.

Look! There’s also a season pass!

Suddenly, you’ve dropped at least $300 on one single video game!

You may laugh and think I’m joking, but I’m being honest.

Microtransactions have forever changed the video game landscape. Before microtransactions were a thing, many video games were sold as standalone experiences. Yet, with Bethesda’s “Oblivion” horse armor DLC, the floodgates were opened for publishers and developers to keep making money on a title post-release.

The Bait:

Video game publishers are in the business to make as much money as possible. They are focused on their bottom line. Money. Manna. Loot.

Before MT, a publisher would be compensated for the initial sale. Afterward, there was no way to earn additional funds after the initial sale.

For consumers, they may have wanted additional content, but there was a cost-efficient way for publishers to do this without additional product runs, distribution and retail packaging.

Enter digital content.

Now, publishers can continue to earn revenue post-release. The customers can keep the experience going for just a few dollars more. The publisher gets to release additional content (or unlock content already instead of the game - link here) and earn revenue. They will increase profit margins by getting sales without disclosing production, physical media and distribution costs eating into the final sales tally.

With a business model like this, publishers can earn so much more by selling the same piece of software repeatedly.

Consumers are enticed for the low prices for new content, but don’t realize they are being hooked.

The Target:

The average consumer is likely unaware to the numerous strategies to get them to part ways with their funds. As stated earlier, most businesses are in business to make money. They are very skilled on ways to make money.

Those weekly deals on multiplayer titles or popular video games with all sorts of content is there to lure the consumer to buy the game. In-game ads, especially in free-to-play video games, bombarded you with many extras. It’s hard to pass on making your game grind easier with just a couple of bucks.

The Tally:

Look at your game collection, physically and digitally. Focus on the games you play the most. My daughter loves all things Sims. Between EA sending me game / DLC codes and our purchases, she’s dumped at least $900 into a now “free” game.

As soon as a new expansion or pack is released, she wants it.

Companies know this.

Rockstar Games will take 10 years to make a new game and reap dividends for years to come.

Yes, video games offer an escape, but, if you’re not careful, the extra content on a cheap - and especially free-to-play game - could cost you much more than you realize.

Can Prime Video, “Fallout,” help Bethesda rebound?

THE STARS HAVE BEEN ALIGNING for Bethesda Softworks as of recently. The trademark video game franchise has gotten a huge boost from the wildly popular Amazon Prime Video series, “Fallout.” The software publisher recently released a next-gen patch for the game, “Fallout 4,” which ushers in a tremendous boom for Sony PlayStation 5 owners, as well as Xbox Series owners, too.

And let’s not overlook the overnight price increases of used copies of their nine-year-old video game.

Several gamers (and nongamers) are mesmerized by the alt version of 1950s Earth and want you to explore the ruins of Terra in the first-person shooter. Retail copies of the game on PlayStation 4 have tripled and could climb higher. Xbox One versions have doubled in price.

With the overwhelming success of the streaming series first season, you better believe a sequel is likely green-lit for production. And with the next-gen patch for current-gen consoles, as well as steady climbing prices for used copies of the game, the real question on gamers minds is: What’s next, Bethesda?

Ever since Bethesda Softworks was acquired by Microsoft, some of their newest releases have had lackluster launches, and have resulted in studio closures at Arcane Studios Austin, and a few others.

“Redfall,” a vampire shooter from Arcane Studios (of the “Dishonored” fame) definitely did fall right out of the gate. Highly anticipated “Starfield” failed to meet initial expectations but has rebounded. Rhythm puzzler “Hi-Fi Rush” was a surprise and something Bethesda wasn’t used to releasing but did an amazing job on.

Unless there’s another surprise video game or IPO lurking like those super-sized roaches in “Fallout 4,” the next big title *should* be “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” releasing later this year or in 2025.

However, with renewed interest in “Fallout,” Bethesda could be considering a full 4K remaster or release for old and new fans. It would be an easy cash grab for MS and Bethesda, and an even bigger chance to unload tons of swag from the game on display in “Fallout” streaming services. (Who wants to bless me with a bobblehead Vault Boy? Black, Negro, please ðŸ™ŒðŸ¾ðŸ™ðŸ¾)

Plus, there’s “Fallout 5” somewhere on the horizon, too. By that time, will the masses still have “Fallout” fever, or want to look to the skies, maybe at a “Starfield?”

Here’s hoping.

Since the DAWN of time, we the consumers have held the power of the purse. Without coins, companies shutter. Without revenue, industries fold.

Yet, the video game industry consistently shovels out video games, bloated with micro transactions and unpolished products, yet will charge $70.

The OG hip hop producer, Timbaland, said on the track, “Beep, Beep,”

“All I have to do is talk on this track; you’d still go out and buy it.”

Some brands - especially Sony - can release anything and expect consumers to buy it. And like clockwork, here come the consumers.

Here are a handful of consumer practices that have enabled the video game industry to focus on profit and shareholders, not consumers.

Consumers will buy/pay arms and legs for a new console, Day 1. Or to buy consoles just to flip them.
Consumers have the money to make companies listen, but refuse to. Boycott a game, accessories and lackluster consoles, companies will listen. But, we want things now.
We are gladly flocking away from physical media but pay full price for a digital file and can be downloaded millions of times.
Refused to demand companies start allowing third-party competitors make cheaper alternatives (hard drives, controllers)
Brand loyalty. You prefer a brand over another. Yet, consumers will gladly pay for a buy trash because it has a company logo. When we stand up, companies will listen.
Buy new console - and all new software. We need companies to allow us to play older gen games instead of having to rebuy games, or have to keep older consoles around.

The writing has been on the wall that the world of video games was headed for trouble. Lackluster releases, low sales figures and studio closures, layoffs and shakeups were present, but oft overlooked by media types. Here’s why.

Gamers knew it. The video game industry knew it. Even Wall Street knew it. And yes, the media knew trouble was looming on the horizon for video games. Yet, most journalists ignored, glossed over and even, turned a blind eye to what was really going on.

As studios close, layoff staff and cancel games, many saw the signs, but seem to be caught off guard.

Here are a few reasons the media failed to report the steady decline of the video game industry.

The media is way too close to video game companies. Publishers, parent companies often dole out a ton of swag, game-inspired freebies and all-expense paid trips to some pretty epic locales prior to a game’s release. I’ve been in magnificent hotel suites in the heart of NYC, The Ciry (San Francisco) multiple times. Limo rides - the driver holds a sign with your name on it at the airport - and chauffeurs you to your plush accommodations. Journalists are treated to some amazing perks. The attendant can influence journalists from being truthful, but compelled to give comments and games great scores for sub-par video games.
Troubling signs known, but not reported. We become friends, on a first-name basis with devs, our PR handlers, and even top executives. Trust me, top-tier journalists have access to scoops, even personal calls/texts most media types don’t. Due to their relationships, some do not want to say anything negative, out of fear of losing games/consoles/accessories.
Relying too much on AI. AI is quick, and can reduce a staff to a skeleton crew. But, it lacks heart and passion. It’s dry and makes reporters lazy. While it may take a staff weeks, if not months to properly research and do a story, AI aggregates numerous stories that may or may not be true.
Reviewers/influencers are posing as journalists. Journalists abide by ethical standards. They attended J-School and understand how to construct stories. They understand libel and know how to research and not take a tweet or hearsay without proper research. Influencers, content creators don’t adhere to the code of ethics to always report the truth. We journalists aren’t fishing for views and clicks; we are compelled to inform accurate, truthful and factual information, whether good or bad.
Honesty. Be truthful, and exercise care. You receive a code for a terrible, broken game. You know it’s trash. Instead of posting a review, reach out to the PR representative for clarity. Being truthful is what increases your credibility. Once, a ci-worker was designing her news page and read through a story about a stabbing at a bar. She soon realized the suspect accused of the stabbing was her dad! She had amazing design skills, but was not a journalist. She literally held the news story hostage for a couple hours, until my slot editor made a copy of the story, slapped it on the page and published it. We journalists are not called to be on a company or games’ team. We have to tell the truth about the industry, good, bad or ugly.

The media failed that standard. If a controller looks cool but tends to suffer stick drift, tell your PR representative, but tell the truth. If the game will need a Day 1 patch, report it. Holding back news that can impact consumers’ purchases is costly to their wallets, and the media’s credibility.

Several factors, including studio closures, layoffs and underperforming AAA games, have contributed to the industry’s missteps

WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE, folks. Gamers have had their share of rides on the video game hype train, numerous video game studio acquisitions and Day 1 patches for AAA games. It’s par the course for young gamers, who grew up with microtransactions, multiplayer matches and broken games at release.

However, the video game industry woes feel different this time.

The latest series of troubles are very similar to the epic video game crash of 1983.

Yes, you’d think an event so tragic for video games would give everyone connected to the industry pause. Those near-fatal mistakes should be feared and never repeated.

Yet, here we are. Again.

These are a few contributing factors that have caused the industry’s series of setbacks

Mergers / acquisitions: The negative effect of mergers is that it reduces competition and will lead to continued job losses. The high price of acquisitions will most definitely lead to further layoffs.
What’s trending?! The industry chased trends and fell flat. The Nintendo Wii motion controls were chased by Sony’s PS Move, Microsoft had the Kinect. Nintendo’s Gameboy had several portable imitators including Atari’s Lynx, Sega’s Game Gear and Nomad, Sony’s PSP and the PS Vita. Instead of learning from their wounds, Sony recently released the PlayStation Portal, a portable controller attached to a small LED screen. The device requires the Internet, but can’t use cellular data. It can’t access WiFi and hotspots, because it doesn’t have a browser.
Industry lacked vision: The industry earned billions with their games, micro transactions and digital content, but did not invest back into new IPs and games that were struggling in development. They should have used their profits on adding more staff to polish titles before release, and help teams in need of support.
Poor quality-control issues: Half-baked games at release, Day 1 patches on certain games. Years ago, before the evolution of the Internet, titles were released ready to go. Devs and publishers knew they had to have their games ready to go, no matter what. Now? Many games, even AAA titles that are glorified betas, are sold at full sticker prices.
Live-service mirage: Video games devs, publishers are leaning too heavily on live-service games. Not every studio, developer and publisher can be Rockstar Games or Epic Games. The industry shouldn’t follow trends. If the industry wants to have live-service games, hire/assign a small team focused on developing and maintaining that game(s).
The customer is ALWAYS RIGHT: The video game industry has been inconsistent on giving fans what they want. Fans beg for epic sequels, only to get truckloads of "shovelware". Sadly, it’s not for consumers, but to meet stakeholders' expectations and market-watchers projections. Great games take time. Even then, it’s a gamble. It is possible to crank out great games on low budgets - Ghost of Tsushima for the Sony PlayStation 4 and 5 - and make catalogs diverse. Give gamers a reason to stay in your console’s ecosystem, game franchises.
