Something here needs to be discussed, digested, its meaning understood. The thing that I like about blogging is that I get to be conscious of the thoughts that bother me. Could they be considered thoughts before they get to the consciousness? There is a lot more activity going on in the subconscious than in the conscious layer of the mind and I get a little bit of clarity when I write about these.

This seems plain now, simple and clear. But, I was at sea before I wrote these down. I could not see heads or tails of the whole thing and generally, it makes me unhappy. Take pleasure and pain. They are faces of the same thing. One cannot have all of the one and none of the other. It just wouldn't work. Identifying this property makes us smarter, and we see life in a much better light.

I always believed that we do not think. We just repeat thoughts and perform old actions without really considering them. I thought mistakenly, that knowing this makes me immune to it. I now realize that I do not think at all.

In Dumaguete

I have just arrived in Dumaguete and the gentle city is as it always was. I had been in Cagayan de Oro City for a while and I did not expect to be here this early. Still, I am glad to be here and things are very nice indeed. I made a little payment to a website that I will be building. There will be a lot of things about Dumaguete which will be featured in this website.

I will be going back to Cagayan de Oro and I will hopefully be doing something new and something great. A new perspective is being shown me and I am seeing a new way of looking at things. Dumaguete is great but the bananas here are very expensive. I wonder if I can make a living here as a farmer?

I could plant bananas here like I am doing in Cagayan de Oro City. Will that work?

Making money

I have tried to make money on the Internet and the effort just does not justify the rewards. There is too much effort to be expended to make any significant money. I have never seen a penny of what some sites say I have in my account. For one thing, I am not really sure they are legit and will actually pay out. I have never stayed long enough to find out even though one site reports that I already has $15 to my name. The big problem is the effort you need to give in order to make some money. It's just too tedious to surf and click on sites. What's the fun in that? But I did find a site which could pay me money if I reach their payout (which I don't know). But I do know this, I am having a blast giving my viewpoint on things I important to me.

Mylot is one way of making money while having fun posting on things you care about.

Dumaguete once more

It has been quite a while since I wrote something on these pages and that is something that I will rectify very soon well, starting now. I have found that they may take away the login privileges if one does not take care of one's blog.

To tell the truth, I was kind of unhappy with the fact that there was nothing at all happening with my Dumaguete site and it seemed as if it was doomed to oblivion. Dumaguete should have more pictures on its pages and I do not see that happening very soon.

It is enough that some new posts have been made and I think I should do more soon.

Alone in Blogging Cosmos

Little by little, I am beginning to get a handle on this thing called the Internet. Last year when I came away from being frustrated about doing what I thought was Internet business, I had to settle for something like blogging having found out that blogging was something that was gaining in popularity which was a good reason to try my hand in it. In a short time I had what I believed was a fairly decent blog with enough content to attract readers. My naivete was pathetic and I was soon scrounging around for visitors. I placed counters on my blogs, I had begun making a number of them in a kind of knee-jerk reaction to being alone, adrift in the blog cosmos.

After a while of seemingly existing in an island, I lost the interest and desire to keep on updating my blogs thinking that no one visited at all. This has got to be the worst feeling of all, to be alone and without knowing if anyone is being reached at all. This morning I took a look at my blogs thinking to work some angle to try and give them visitors. This involved putting some javascript on my page in return for exposure in other sites. I thought this is something that I need to try out. Another experiment which needs to be made as part of my Internet experience.

Fiesta Again?

It seems to me that everytime I make a post about Dumaguete it falls around the fiesta or the days leading up to the fiesta. There might be a hidden pattern to the way that I update this blog. I remember that I had such big plans which included taking a lot of pictures and posting them here but unfortunately I lost my digital camera and have not been able to replace it. Kind of a fly in the ointmen situation, nothing truly disheartening but a bit annoyance nevertheles. I had the same plans for Cagayan de Oro City which has some very memorable places for me. I will have to defer my plans for Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro City photo-wise that is, until I can get me a digital camera.

I have made Dumaguete my home and it just suits me fine although I go to Cagayan de Oro City from time to time and I would like to go back there again. I do not know how I would fare back in Cagayan de Oro City if I was to live there for a long period of time. I think maybe I would start missing Dumaguete and want to back. I have some wonderful green tea plants in Dumaguete and I would surely miss taking of them as I usually do every single day whenever I am in Dumaguete.

Time flies in Dumaguete

Time sure flies. It just keeps on marching steadily, constantly, inexorably. Nothing can stop it. It moves and keeps on moving. It seems like just a while ago when the Fiesta of Dumaguete was here. It came with fanfare and went away with the days. Now, it is back again. It must be because nothing ever happens with me that I seem to be by-passed by time. Ah well, I have nothing to complain about. I have Ching's World to look to when I have nothing to do.

Ching's World now carries the Lotto Pool on its back and the burden seems to be a bit too heavy for my computer. I had put in another gigabyte of RAM and in a matter of days I have run the application up to the upper limit of my computer's memory.

Driving along Hibbard Ave. in Dumaguete City, I came upon the elevated walkway that links two sides of a narrow street along Silliman University. Nobody uses that walkway even when they put a traffic enforcer to force students to use it. It's just a waste of time and money putting up that walkway.

Dumaguete looks really fine on the pages of Ching's World. It is sure to be good for Dumaguete to have another website singing its praises and bringing more visitors to its shores. This being a wired, connected world, another site that brings information to the other side of the globe would surely be a good service for all.

With different categories this directory will showcase the different businesses in Dumaguete City. A business could never have too much publicity and a new website that promotes the City will help to make Dumaguete more familiar.

Dumaguete Fiesta - Feast of Sta. Catalina of Alexandria

Dumaguete once again celebrates on November 26, 2006, the Feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria otherwise known as Sta. Catalina de Alexandria, the Patron Saint of Dumaguete City. As the Fiesta nears, Dumaguete starts to get decked out in Fiesta colors and streamers proclaiming the event. Many visitors are expected to share in the bounty of the Fiesta as is the wont of Filipinos everywhere.

Fiestas are part of the Filipino way of life and the exuberance and lavishness of the celebrations never seem to wane or lose steam. Each year vies to outdo the previous year in fervor and piousness as well as in ostentation and display of bounty for it is the one day of the year when the Patron Saint is thanked for her intercession in bringing prosperity and bounty to the people who venerate her.

The Maharlika Artists and Writers Federation coincidentally holds the Sunrise Festival III to showcase artistic endeavors by way of exhibits and lectures. Quoting from the website:
"The Sunrise Festival is a celebration of arts held annually in the different regions of Maharlika (Philippines). A collaborative effort among professional and upcoming artists in the country, it is the first national event organized by the Maharlika Artists and Writers Federation. The festival is a start of a continuing national cultural movement to develop a high value and a total integration of all aspects of arts in the country: music, theatre, literary, dance, senses,emotions and intuition and spirit."

Dumaguete is close to Mindanao and Visayas

Dumaguete is geographically fortunate in that it sits close to Mindanao while remaining part of the Visayas. This brings it much closer to many Mindanoao provinces but somehow, Cebu still owns the lion's share of shipping traffic. There are more ships plying the Cagayan de Oro - Cebu route than the Cagayan de Oro - Dumaguete route. This means that going to Dumaguete from Cagayan de Oro can be done on a direct ferry once a week and returning back is also on a weekly basis. Contrast this with several vessels bridging Cebu and Cagayan de Oro on a daily basis.

This makes Dumaguete less of a shipping hub. One reason could be that the Dumaguete Port is small and can only accomodate a few vessels at one time. A plan to expand the port has met with vehement opposition from conservationists who insist that the ecology would suffer from such a development. Contrast this with Cebu City which is unarguably the country's shipping capital. Most, if not all of the Shipping Companies in the Philippines have their main offices in Cebu City. This is not to say that Cebu has the market cornered for its locally-produced commodities although it does have the distinction of having the most number of exporters next only to Manila.

One of the things that a newcomer to Dumaguete notices is the high prices of basic commodities like rice and fish and vegetables. Even fruits are expensive. This is a big wonder to many people who are used to having bananas and mangoes in abundance. One would not be surprised at the big metropolitan cities having high prices but the truth of the matter is that even flowers are less expensive in Cebu than in Dumaguete. For fish to be expensive in Dumaguete is also a source of puzzlement to many. Dumaguete has water all around it and yet the variety and the quantity of fish available are really quite pitiful. Contrast this with Cagayan de Oro City which has fish in abundance.

Could the reason be that the produce of Mindanao go to Cebu more than Dumaguete? Cagayan de Oro is a beneficiary of Davao's bounty so also of the plentiful harvests of rice and vegetables from Bukidnon and the fish from Zamboanga and Cotabato. The produce that pass Cagayan de Oro ultimately to go Cebu and Manila where they fetch a better price. In this configuration, Dumaguete is by-passed.

Buglasan once more

Dumaguete City once again hosts the annual Buglasan Festival which this year happens from Oct. 13 to 29, 2006. The Province of Negros Oriental has always been proud of this celebration having successfully organized this event year after year. This year, the Province has earmarked Php 4.5M to ensure that this year's celebration is nothing less than spectacular.

Buglasan is derived from the word Buglas which means "reeds" in Visayan describing the abundance of this plant in times past. Fifteen towns or local government units will show their wares during this event, displaying the best that their municipalities can offer and vying for the honors and prizes which are most coveted year after year.

Gov. George P. Arnaiz is proud of the tradition which he spawned seven years ago when Negros Oriental Province celebrated the First Buglasan Festival. This event has proven to be an enlivening addition to the many tourist-drawing events which Dumaguete City is known for and this includes the crowd-gathering favorite, the Santacruzan in May that never fails to attract the celebrities from Manila.

The Beggars Of Dumaguete

Dumaguete prides itself with being the "City of Gentle People" and I find that to be true with its beggars as well. No city is without its homeless and dispossessed and Dumaguete City is no exception. Gov. Perdices street, the narrow main street where most of the retail businesses are, is also where the beggars ply their trade of selling emotional burden for mere pittance. It struck me while walking briskly along Perdices St. how early these beggars start their daily routine. What they basically do is sit on the sidewalk and hope for coins to be tossed into their cans or hat. Some are blind, some play musical instruments. I have seen several males who surprisingly looked well-fed and healthy. With eyes closed, one would surmise that these were indeed sightless.

Quite a number of them have children playing on the sidewalk which would lead one to think that begging is a means of livelihood which allows a family to survive. Except for one or two who actively solicit for a coin or two, these beggars sit quietly, waiting for pity to translate into money in their pockets.

I used to see a group of Badjaos who are professional beggars that seem to be everywhere in the Philippines; and they are a rowdy group of young females and sometimes young boys. They come at you like birds of prey and crowd and tug at your sleeves and touch your arms asking for money. These are a native community which have left their homes somewhere and planted themselves in a city where they thrive and grow, making money from begging. I have often wondered where the menfolk bide their time while their females forage for coins and leftovers from the fastfood restaurants. They invariably have a baby or two in the group, which is one of the principal props of begging. I guess the authorities have relocated them somewhere because they are nowhere to be seen in Dumaguete these days.

Over-all, the beggars of Dumaguete are more well-behaved than those of other places. This must mean that they are able to make enough money to survive from day to day.

Silliman University in Dumaguete City

In 2001, Silliman University celebrated its Centennial. It was a big affair with many alumni from all the corners of the globe making the journey home after having been away for many, many years. In 1901, American missionaries established what is now known as Silliman University. Silliman is well-known for the quality of education which it gives. Many of its graduates hold important and prestigious positions in government and the private sector. A good many of graduates have also gone abroad to hold important positions in banking and business. Many of these graduates made this historic visit to celebrate with the City of Dumaguete and Silliman University a hundred years of excellent service in the field of Education.

Dumaguete City is very lucky to be the site of Silliman University which sits prominently close to the business and the downtown area of Dumaguete City. Coming in from the Harbor of Dumaguete City, one immediately sees Silliman University amid the centuries-old acacia trees that bear silent witness to the long years of service that Silliman University has rendered to the community ot Dunaguete City.

A presence in the Internet

It is easy to be deceived by appearances. Dumaguete city appears to be a place that sleeps, not caring at all for the rat race of the big cities like Cebu or Manila. That motorcycles outnumber cars in terms of numbers in Dumaguete seems to cement the notion that this southern city is indeed a sleepy place. This notion will easily be disabused if one is to use the search engines to search for websites relating to "Dumaguete" . I was pleasantly surprised to find over 48,000 pages being reported by Google on the keyword "Dumaguete". I had expected a handful of result pages but the actual count is closer to a hundred pages.

This simply goes to show that Dumaguete has plenty of websites dedicated to it in the Internet. Going over the results of the search I find diverse topics being discussed aside from the ubiquitous news and information pages detailing statistics like land area and population. I found a great number of pages relating to travel and hotel accommodations. This is quite obvious and one can easily see that Dumaguete is a favorite destination of Americans and Europeans. Take a stroll along the Rizal Boulevard and one can see many Caucasians enjoying the quiet pleasures of this easy-going city. It is also a common sight to see American and Europeans who have chosen to settle down in Dumaguete; little toddlers with their white fathers and Filipina mothers going shopping or taking s lazy walk along the boulevard in this wonderful city called Dumaguete. .

Dumaguete has become a melting pot of cultures and peoples. Many Dumaguete residents have relatives who work abroad many of whom have also gotten married there. This brings closer distant lands and the Internet is a wonderful way to bridge distances. No wonder then that there are many websites dedicated to Dumaguete. They extoll her beauty and quality of living which is very high indeed compared to the stressful lifestyles one can find in a highly-developed metropolitan city.

Overpass forlorn

Classes have opened for Silliman University Basic Education students. They mill, they gather, they congregate around the gates waiting for their rides. They ignore using the Overpass that hangs above the historic acacia trees, a marked intruder into this arboreal paradise of birds and butterflies, bees and other insects. Very few people express any satisfaction or approval of this monumental disgrace, some went so far as to splatter paint on the billboard announcing its construction. Many students held candle-lit vigils in the forlorn hope that the construction could be stopped. Nothing seemed to prevail over the megalomanic desire of partylist congressman Sunny Madamba to spend large amounts of people's money to trumpet to all the world his great achievement, the construction of an overpass that nobody wants. His grand structure straddles a narrow street that is easily crossed, his name brazenly emblazoned over this ill-conceived structure.

Silliman University forcefully opposed the expansion of the Dumaguete Port. Why is it silent in this folly? Is it complicit in its conception? Does Silliman University condone or approve of this plan? Where is the wisdom of this monstrosity? Is it merely to emulate the big cities like Cebu which has wider lanes that need to be spanned by an overpass in order to provide safe passage to pedestrians and to maintain a free flow of traffic? Is it to use up the good congressman's Countryside Development Fund (CDF). Could he not have put those monies to better use? for countryside development perhaps?

I am afraid that this folly is indeed a blot on the record of Silliman University. I wonder how the partylist congressman justifies this enormous, eggregious blunder? Every time the common people passes by this structure, one hears their disgust vented in no uncertain terms. Are they not heard? Do the people have a voice at all? Are they ever consulted in matters that involve them? Are the powers that be so powerful in their own right? Does the term "power emanates from the people" mean mere lip service to the concepts of true democracy?

Slow, easy-going life

Dumaguete, when first it appears as the fastcraft slices through the clear waters and turns to make for the tiny harbor, presents a refreshing view of trees and plants in abundance. It is as if a pristine paradise is being approached, one very much different from the neighboring Cebu City which boasts of taller buildings and more concrete than trees; trees which make a place more welcoming. The hundred-year old acacia trees daily share their shady branches with birds chirping above as well as soften the harsh ultra-violet rays of the sun encouraging pedestrians and students below to negatiote distances on foot with less discomfort.. The fastcraft has stopped plying the waters to service travellers of Cebu, Tagbilaran, Dumaguete and Dapitan, an obvious victim of economic forces.

A plan to modernize the Port of Dumaguete was successfully impeded by the people with the vigorous support of Silliman University. It might bring bigger ships and more traffic to Dumaguete at the cost of the marine ecology of the bay, a price the people of Dumaguete were unwilling to pay. One project which has successfully intruded into the branches of the historic acacia trees of Silliman University is the expensive skywalk that spans a narrow street, hardly worth the trouble of climbing it and going down. just to get to the other side.

Sunrise at the Boulevard

Siquijor in the distant horizon. Sunrise viewed from the Boulevard, a favorite spot for promenaders. It is also frequented by health-conscious people who do calisthenics and brisk walking to get the blood circulation going.
