I like Samuel Smith Beer! In the past, I've reviewed their:

Oatmeal Stout and..
Nut Brown Ale

I also like Chocolate Stouts! My biggest post, to date, is the review I did for Underworld Brewing's Chocolate Stout!

This one smells, and tastes, like Hershey's Dark Chocolate! Very dark in color, I couldn't see my hand through the glass ( or is it that I'm Black? LOL).All jokes aside, I enjoyed this beer.

Yeah, boy!

It has a sweet taste, with a dark chocolate bitter after taste.Unusually great! I had to travel to the other side of town to find this one...at a corner store nonetheless. What I like about living in San Diego County is the number of Beer Lovers.The community of beer lovers allows one to find some of the best Craft Beers at a corner store, instead of a specialty store.Not that stores like that don't exist, it's just that you don't have to go far to find a good Craft Beer!

I paired this with a Steak and Fries dinner.Watching 30 Minutes or Less back to back on Channel FX.

This beer gave me a helluva "buzz", too. I was only 1/4 of the way through the bottle and felt "great in spirit"! Highly recommended, if you're into a flavorful Beer!

Ballast Point Brewing Company Pale Ale : The Original

Hello!

I went to my local corner store and got this beauty! I've supported this brewery in the past and enjoyed it, so, I wanted to try out another one of their wares.I needed another beer to drink for the San Diego Chargers v. Tennessee Titans game, since I guzzled all MY beer.What a game, Chargers were up and then at damn near the last minutes, the Titans pull off a touchdown pass.Wow!

It was a great day....

The beer is light in color, with loads of bubbles.I don't know why a bubbling beer amuses me, but it does.It has a crisp taste, too. It reminds me of Budweiser or a Coors. You know how I feel about Budweiser! It went VERY well with the food you see above. Gave me a nice enough "buzz" to get a nap in, as well. I'm surprised at that given that the ABV is 5.2%! I've supported this beer since going to an event that they were co-sponsoring. It was local music with local brewing company beers on display.

Brooklyn BrewShop's Everyday IPA: Bottling my brew

Finally..

After all that procrastination I bottled my beer. I actually bottled 10 bottles!

I had to sterilize the bottles:

Let air dry:

Get the beer in the bottles, by way of siphoning:

..then I stored them in a dark place.Now if you remember, when I brewed beer my first time, I was drinking some of the beers, BEFORE it was time. My excuse was I wanted to see what the taste was like...well, like the great Peter Griffin says:

I'm guilty of doing it again..I've already had 2 bottles to date.Knowing damn well I should wait until TODAY! It's MY beer,right? Why not?

Anyway, I have some friends who wanna try what I've come up with. I can't have them tasting shitty beer! I think it tastes pretty good! I'll see what they say..

I started this batch a while back and it should already be done, but "procrastination is a hell of a drug"...

New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale

Howdy!

I'm still in the process of getting a reliable camera. Please bear with me.

This week I decided to review New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale.

The first time I ever heard of this beer was at a pizza joint out here called Killer Pizza From Mars. They not only have "killer" pizza that's outta this world, but they serve craft beers, as well. I was with a buddy of mine and he ordered it. I wasn't into craft beers yet, so, I know for a fact I was guzzling a Heineken.

Fast forward a few years and here we are. I'm tasting and reviewing it.

I like this beer (there's really NOT that many I don't like)!This one has a nice, light, smooth taste. Not really bitter, just goes down smoothly. No "beer face" for me ( although, that's why I usually record myself, so, you can see my reaction to the tastes)!

It has a light orange brown coloring to it..Like so..

Yummy-ness!

What amazed me was the consistent bubbling that was going on THE ENTIRE TIME it was sitting in my glass.I don't know why this was so amazing, but it was to me.

It definitely captures that Belgium-esque taste.Didn't have that "bologna" smell, though. which is okay with me. I can see pairing this with some kielbasa, or maybe even some smoked sausage, with some sauerkraut.I'm getting hungry as I type this sentence.

Gave me a nice comfortable buzz with the one bottle.A "plus" for me.Spirits MUST have "spirit" to it, as far as I'm concerned.

My suggestion: Light up the grill and put some bratwurst, kielbasa, smoke sausage on the grill and crack one of these while you burn.Finish burning and crack another one while eating your grilled fare.Highly recommended!

Firestone Walker's Reserve Porter

Heyyy!

It's been a minute and I do apologize for that....Let's get into it!

This past August I did some volunteer work for Stone Brewing Company's 17th Anniversary.This will make my 3rd time working with them.Basically, the volunteer work is pouring and helping clean at the end of the sessions they have.This event got me into home brewing, craft beers and doing this blog!

The first year, I was assigned to AleSmith. The second year was Oskar Blues Brewery. This year it was Mike Hess.After the event the Wife and I went to an after party and I met a local Master Brewer (I need to get back in touch with him.He told me a lot.he's willing to train me, too) Great fun!

I've been home brewing an Everyday IPA from The Brooklyn BrewShop Beer Making Kit. Problem is I haven't been staying on top of it..so it looks like shit!

UPDATE: Right after I typed that last sentence, I went and tasted it ( I still have it fermenting, have been for more than a month, maybe two). It wasn't bad.Had an oatmeal taste to it and sediment floating through it, though. I think I'll still bottle it and see what's up.Chalk it up to learning.

Yummy!

I went to the local corner store and picked up this beauty. I'm a big fan of Stouts and Porters. I love the nutty, chocolate tastes. In this case, It had that chocolate, nutty taste.Roasted nutty taste.Reminds me of Oskar Blues Brewery's Ten Fidy. Also has a roasted nut smell.Yummy! I shared some with the Wife and then I took the rest.Sipping it.After about 4 sips I started to feel the buzz (which is a surprise, since the ABV is only 5.8% !!).

Nice mellow feeling, though.I paired it with a Subway Club sandwich.Pretty good.

On a side note, I met Dave Kachorek ,of Firestone Walker Brewing, their "San Diego Padre of Pale" at the Anniversary and he was a real cool guy.I introduced myself to him and asked him how to pronounce " Wookey Jack", one of their flavors. Not only did he tell me how to spell it, he gave me the history of the name, the meaning of their logo and more! He also invited me to the brewery (which I have to take him up on) to taste their other flavors.

Classic!

Anyway, I highly recommend this beer to those who are lovers of Stouts and Porters.Pair this with some grilled meat.Burgers, steak, maybe.To me you have to have an acquired taste for this.Don't go from Budweiser to this unless you plan on changing your thoughts on Commercial beers v. Craft Beers ( see how I differentiated the "beers" between the two?..lower case for "Commercial " vs Craft..almost like royalty)

How have ya been? I thought I'd review this beer since I did enjoy their Longboarder.
I had just gone grocery shopping with the Wife, where I picked up some Steak-Umms!
I had to have a beer with this greasy treat.I went to my trusty corner store and picked through the Kona Brewing "section" of the freezer.

After "hooking up" the homemade hoagie with all the fixings, I ran into the "studio" to begin tasting.I try to give you my "beer face".That's my niche. I think.

My Beer Gut

I have a beer gut.

Most of YOU have a beer gut. I know you do. Does your beer gut hurt your back? Mine does.

I’ve somewhat started a crusade to kill the gut, but I won’t STOP drinking beer. My choice. I think I’ll just have to be a little more moderate about my consumption/drinking/puggin’/guzzlin’. That’s my challenge. I’m currently weighing in at 217lbs at 5’10”.

Any suggestions?

Stone Brewery’s 16th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival

Happy 16th Stone!

My wife got us involved in this last year through a friend of hers who’s been doing it for quite some time. As volunteers, at least what we’ve experienced, we pour beers for the guests who are there to taste craft beers made by Stone Brewery and associate brewers of Stone. Some of the “guest brewers” were Oskar Blues ( where we worked), Ska Brewing, AleSmith,Manzanita, Ballast Point, Hess Brewing, San DiegoBrewing, Green Flash Brewing, Black Market Brewing, Avery, Victory Brewing, Julian Hard Cider, Iron Fist, SierraNevada, Pizza Port, Lost Abbey and about 31 others!

It’s a great event for a number of reasons:

Drinking GREAT beers
Meeting people
Learning home brewing and the sciences of it
Drinking GREAT beers
Eating DAMN GOOD food
Meeting interesting people
Having fun overall
Drinking GREAT beers
It’s for charities
Seeing people letting themselves go

This event is what got me to homebrew. Meeting people who take beers seriously is GREAT! Knowing that ANYONE can do this from home is what piqued my interest. Being in a place (California) where this is a big deal helps. Most brewers just want to get California on the map as far as Craft Beers go, so, they WILL help you to learn!

At the booth I worked, I learned A LOT about the company and its products. There were people who came to the booth and told me about products we didn’t have in stock. My wife and I went right to BevMo after the event and picked up a four pack of Oskar Blues Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale!

My mouth watered ALL DAY for beer. It was a hot day and to see these people cooling themselves off with a tasty beer didn’t help me enjoy my water (we weren’t allowed to drink the beers...there’s an appreciation dinner later in October where we will, though)!

This is one event I love to volunteer for. This year, though, has me struggling with next year’s decision. Should I volunteer, be a patron or a guest brewer?

Time will tell.

Ballast Point Calico Amber Ale

Ooooweeee!

Yep! This is some good brew! I went digging in the $1 beer bucket at the store for this one!

I've tried Tecate and a few other Mexican beers, but this one hit the spot. I did a little research on this beer and found this. The link is mainly in Spanish, but I use Google Chrome and it gave me the option to translate into English.

What I found interesting was that this company/brewery deals with Heineken, Dos Equis, Tecate and Coors.

Anyway, without further ado...The video:

Left Coast Brewing Company Hop Juice

Howdy, Folks!
I've tried a Left Coast Brewing Comapny Brew before and liked it, so, I figured I'd go with another one.This one is called Hop Juice! I found this at my local corner store.
It's a double India Pale Ale (IPA) so it has that bitter taste that's reserved for those with a distinct acquired taste.Not for the weak stomach.Or for the ones who only drink what I consider commercial beers.

I think the video pretty much speaks for itself in this one.

BJ’s Dark and Stormy

My Dad and Me

My father was in town for my youngest daughter’s high school graduation. The day after the ceremony, my father came and picked me up from work during lunch. My “boss” allowed me to leave for the day, so, we went and had lunch at a spot called BJ’s Brewhouse.

If you ever been there it’s practically an upscale sports bar. I don’t know if that is the look they’re going for, but I like it either way!

The reason for going there was for me to show my father the world of California “Craft beers”. We had a menu that was devoted to just beers, so, I had him look at it first. We had the Harvest Hefenweizen to start with our plate of Fried Calamari. I felt that was a good pairing (Good job, Daddy).This combination put the “spirit” in our spirits. We were feeling good.

When our entrees came, it was time for a refill. The drinks were on me, so, I wanted to show off. I was introduced to “Black and Tans” through my father to begin with. I figured let me order us a brew called Dark and Stormy.

Oh, damn. I try not to curse on this blog, so, I’ll maintain that…But, trust, there’s more expletives I could use to describe this brew. I’ll keep it G (rated).

The beer was a combination of their Hopstorm IPA ( Indian Pale Ale) and Tatonka Stout beer. It had a fruity taste to begin with and a bitter bite to it. I ordered a standard burger (which was big as hell!) and washed big bites down with the beer. I’m a simple man with simple tastes –sometimes. I would mo9st definitely recommend this beer to you the next time you are at your neighborhood BJ’s Brewhouse.

Samuel Smith : Oatmeal Stout

I remember eating "somewhere" and I saw this.Thanks to my Pop and his Black n Tan drinks, I've gotten into Stouts a long time ago. I like Guiness Stout. This is what got me to try this Stout.I figured, "Oatmeal? This ought to be interesting!". Yes, it was.

When you go to Samuel Smith's site regarding this beer, they have an ad that says: " Drink your Oatmeal".
I wouldn't go that far, but it is good as a bowl of oatmeal and just as filling.

I could do this at a barbecue, at least eating some good grilled fare. The site suggests pizza, pastas, breads and various cheeses ( Have you ever had Steak and Kidney pie?).
