Here in Frederick Md aluminum cans have risen from a low of $.35 a pound back up to $.65 a pound

The London Metal Exchange seems to be THE place to gauge the current prices being paid worldwide. Prices listed there reflect the auction price and not local prices.

The London Metal Exchange or LME is the futures exchange with the world's largest market in options, and futures contracts on base
and other metals. As the LME offers contracts with daily expiry dates
of up to three months from trade date, along with longer-dated
contracts, it also allows for cash trading. It offers hedging, worldwide reference pricing, and the option of physical delivery to settle contracts.

In 2008, a recycler in Tulsa, Okla. paid 85 cents per pound for aluminum cans, but the going rate for 2009 has dropped to less than half of that amount. According to Michael Patton, executive director of the Metropolitan Environmental Trust in Tulsa, the decrease is directly related to the economic recession.

Patton says the “bottom has fallen out of the scrap metal industry.” The demand for metal has disappeared due to the decrease in construction, a drastic change from the metal scarcity in Tulsa just two years ago.

“This is related to the economy and demand issues in the home construction industry. An amazing amount of aluminum, steel and copper is used in home and commercial building construction,” Patton tells Tulsa World. “But this construction isn’t happening in America.”

Over the past five months, the prices for aluminum have fluctuated. In December, January and February, the price dropped to 15 cents per pound and is now steadying itself at approximately 25 cent per pound.

But Patton says this price “rollercoaster” is not necessarily a bad thing. It helps expand the use of material because entrepreneurs will have to think of news ways to use aluminum cans. On average, a recycled aluminum can is converted back into a usable beverage can in 60 days.

American Recycler is reporting the same sentiment of hope. The news outlet says although there are mixed opinions on the state of the scrap metal market, there are signs of life. Some believe that scrap metal prices have hit the bottom, and are now slowly recovering. However, metal recyclers are still holding tight on operation costs and “holding their breath.”

In addition to the economic recession, severe weather may also have an impact on the compounded shortage reported in many parts of the country. Also creating controversy in the scrap metal industry is the recent “Buy American” provision passed in January. The bill would mostly ban foreign steel and iron from projects laid out by the $819 billion economic package. However, it is still unknown just how the provision will be carried out or what effect it will have on the scrap metal industry.

For the most part, industry heads are confident that the scrap metal industry is on its way to recovery, in spite of its shaky state. Domestic and foreign government bailouts and guarantees will eventually awaken the economy, and consumers will start buying, creating more jobs.

“We are cautiously optimistic that infrastructure spending in the United Sates, in China and other countries will help jumpstart prices and demand for our commodities,” says Bruce Savage, vice president of communications at Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. “Our theory has always been it’s not a question of if it will rebound, it’s a question of when.”

From 2003 to 2008 you could make a decent living scraping metal IF you were entrepreneurial enough and had enough ambition (and had the rapport of a salesman) to get warehouses to give you the stuff... I know because I did it!

Sadly this is no longer the case, the wear and tear on your pick up vs what you get paid is a whole lot less than it used to be.

Virtually NONE of the local Washington DC area/ Western Maryland area scrap metal recycling facilities post current prices on their websites. What you usually see is "call xxx-xxxx for current prices.

... I could only find one:
His motto: "Your trash is my cash." At his K&K Recycling 10-acre facility yard in North Pole, he stores such items as pipe and pipeline camps, as well as aging aircraft and steel beams.

"I even have my own missile," he said. "Everyone should have their own missile."

Years ago, Karl was hired to clean up a government Nike site, an anti-aircraft missile system used between World War II and the Cold War eras. The Army left behind a missile in the launch silo. Contracted to take everything out, Karl ended up with the memento.

He finds some interesting uses for many of his long-stored items. Insulated pipe previously used on North Slope oilfields was recycled to move hot water to turbines to power the facilities at his Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Chena Hot Springs is a world-class resort, but the 450-acre lot also is a proving ground for Karl's numerous and varied experiments. Karl has pioneered the use of geothermal energy at the Chena resort, located 56 miles east of Fairbanks.

Fairbanks' Bernie Karl eyes new renewable energy sources

Rob Stapleton/Alaska Journal of Commerce

Published Saturday, August 29, 2009

My Dad was assigned to one of the first Nike Missile batteries, that's how he met my Mom (and I wouldn't be here if not for this little fact)

The first 24 Nike anti-aircraft missile batteries were deployed in a ring around Washington D.C., my Dad was in the 16th Battalion. Dad said the Army wouldn't let them deploy until they had successfully shot down a radio controlled WW2 B-17 drone (it took them 2 years of practice to shoot one down, that's how new the technology was in the mid 1950's)

From Wikipedia:
When it became apparent that the greatest threat to US National defense was from missiles instead of bombers, most Nike-Hercules units were deactivated. All CONUS Nike-Hercules batteries, with the exception of the ones in Florida and Alaska, were deactivated by April 1974. The remaining units were deactivated during the spring of 1979. Dismantling of the sites in Florida - Alpha Battery in Everglades National Park, Bravo Battery in Key Largo, Charlie Battery in Carol City and Delta Battery, located on Krome Avenue on the outskirts of Miami - started in June 1979 and was completed by early fall of that year. The buildings that once housed Delta Battery became the original structures used for the Krome Avenue Detention Facility, a federal facility used primarily to hold illegal immigrants awaiting immigration hearings. In Alaska, Site Point was converted into a ski chalet for Kincaid Park.
The US Army continued to use Nike-Hercules as a front-line air defense weapon in Europe until 1983, when Patriot missile batteries were deployed. NATO units from West Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Greece and Turkey continued to use the Nike-Hercules for high-altitude air defense until the late 1980s. With the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the units were deactivated.
Instant Cash when you need it. Taxes?

Driven by China's insatiable appetite, prices for scrap metal had skyrocketed. But now, the scrap metal industry has been hit hard by the global financial crisis — and scrap yards themselves could be facing the scrap heap.

Scrap Metal being sold to India: then... not now

http://www.export.gov/india/scrap.asp

The Indian metal industry is growing at a pace as fast as India’s industrial economy, offering one of the steepest returns in the Asia-Pacific region. The metal scrap recycling industry in India, is also growing at a rapid pace. As there is less domestic scrap generated then demand, India imports about half of the 1.2 million metric tons of scrap metal consumed annually in the country.

The United States is a major exporter of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap into India. According to the U.S. Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), the U.S. based scrap industry is a significant exporter of high quality scrap commodities to industrial consumers worldwide. Asia, and India in particular, is one of the fastest growing markets in the world for scrap metal. In 2005 (the latest year for which data is available), U.S. scrap exporters shipped more than $350 million of scrap commodities to India, including approximately $250 million of ferrous and nonferrous scrap. (see Market Demand below)

Though the opportunities in the Indian scrap sector are large, the industry is unorganized. Thus, U.S. companies are encouraged to be careful in all of their deals. Many Indian scrap importers are small and it is important for U.S. exporters to check the credentials of an Indian company. ISRI’s specifications should be used at all times to eliminate any possible discrepancies. To avoid disputes, U.S. exporters must insist on inspections before shipping the products. In addition, U.S. exporters must adhere to the Indian government regulations related to scrap metal exports including registration with India’s Director General of Foreign Trade. Disputes can be reduced by adhering to the critical aspects of procedures for exporting cargo (see Market Entry) of scrap containers to India.

From Dumpster Diving 4 Instant Cash

Prices paid for scrap aluminum cans here in Frederick Maryland up a nickle, from low of $.25 lb to $.30 lb.

Reader Input
A reader writes this:

Am I missing something? I have a medium sized range, three clothes washers, a pellet stove (heavy sucker) and a couple commercial electric service panels, and a five drawer lateral file cabinet.

(I'm trying to make space in my evidence storage locker)

If I am willing to give myself a hernia and then re injure it 5 times loading this stuff on a truck, and I drive it 30 miles to a scrap dealer and he buys it, I could make back half of my truck rental expense????

What is wrong with this picture? Why would you be in this business, and is it true that the red Chinese are buying our scrap the same way our other friends did in the 1940's?

Thanks in advance for sharing your insight.

My response:

... yup, the days of profitably scraping light weight metals such as tin, junk appliances seem to be gone at least for the next year. When I did it full time back in 2004, 2005 prices were at a 6 year high according to the scrap dealers who were paying me.

I guess we'll have to wait for the economic recovery... which will come (unless the democrats screw things up by being too greedy with their income redistribution/ social engineering experiment). You know... demand rises constantly, it may be pent up demand but when the credit markets/ housing markets/ financial markets settle down and who ever has to take their well deserved lumps takes them... we will be back with a vengance.

Pent Up Demand

That's what got us out of the last depression.

Instant Cash when you need it. We shall see what the stimulus package does in the way of helping.

I've been focusing on aluminum primarily because to scrap steel requires a heavier truck and stronger back. I killed two pick up trucks over the past 15 years- the wieght tends to wear out the brake rotors even if they suspension can handle the load. You've really got to have a 3/4 ton or higher and a trailer if you're going to earn honest money on the side in this business.

I'll include this next reblog to cover the news on steel prices as well.

U.S. scrap and pig iron prices continued to drop.
Current scrap price on East Coast hit US$230 ~ 240/ton, shredded scrap price at US$220~230/ton, while H1 scrap price reached US$195~205/ ton.As for the export, because of weak demand in steel products and the cut of steel output, scrap export prices were also very low. The H1&H2 (80:20) mixed scrap exported to Turkey priced at CFR US$265/ton, down by US$15/ton compared with January.

In addition, the price of pig iron exported to Brazil dropped back to US$260/ton.

http://scrapmetalpricesandauctions.com/2009/02/us-scrap-metal-pig-iron-prices-continue-slide/

Instant Cash when you need it. Not to mention steel girders were hard on my back.

Copper is alleged to continue to be scarce

According to the Metals: Price Review of the London Metal Exchange

Analysts are largely predicting continued tightness for some time yet: “There are constantly downward revisions to output growth in copper, partly because there have been delays to new projects,” says Barclays Capital’s Ingrid Sternby. “Mine production will grow some 800,000 tonnes less than anticipated due to technical problems and other supply constraints, and these factors are likely to last longer than the market had widely believed.”

There have been many disruptions to supply this year, from equipment failures such as that at the Collahuasi mine in Chile in early 2005, to the effects of earthquakes in Chile’s Cerro Colorado mine, along with the effects of industrial action at numerous many facilities.

Furthermore, industrial production growth is accelerating again, suggesting upward pressure on global demand in areas other than China, and further supply disruptions or delays to new mining projects coming online could exacerbate supply constraint for a longer period than some had expected. Many analysts are set to remain extremely bullish about copper prices in the longer term.

Copper is used in huge quantities by the US military. Bullets need copper. Afghanistan (and hopefully not Pakistan) is going to need a "surge" just like Iraq did. Bullets were said to be so scarce last year that some police departments reported that it was becoming difficult for them to find certain types of ammunition.
I think the military ordinance demand put a hurting on the availability of ammo (and by extension, copper)

http://www.metalprices.com/ is displaying a graph (that I do not have permission to reprint here) depicting a recent sharp rise in Copper Prices.

I'm wondering if old heating elements might be worth more in 2009. Tungsten is required for Military armor, ammunition and cutting tools. Nickel is looking like its on the rise but I cant think of anything offhand that would be in a dumpster that would have enough nickel in it to make it worthwhile to scavenge.

I'll keep you posted
Instant Cash when you need it. That's why we're not paying as much for aluminum as we were 2 months ago. Right now demand for aluminum just dropped to zero. But this is not to say don't recycle!

You can recycle cardboard, other metals besides steel, recycle everything, I'm just saying it will get cold and the price paid for aluminium will go up so just sit on it for a while.

If you found this post interesting you might want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe to Dumpster Diving for Instant Cash via email to make sure you catch the latest posts

You see, in the summer people don't like to keep cans because of the bees and other insects they attract. In direct sunlight the sugar in the soda cooks...

It's winter now, well, almost. It's cold enough to keep cans in your back yard until spring.

Here's a graph I found on just how much crap is in our landfills:

It seems that 37% of the contents of landfills is paper, only 10% is metal.

You can get cash for cardboard at recycling centers, not all of them, but most

Next Post will be current prices for various scrap metals. I intend to make daily reports on current scrap metal prices being paid in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Until the scrap yards get suspicious of me calling everyday that is.

Think about it: If you were paying LESS than your competitor, you wouldn't be very keen on telling the whole world... would ya?

One place I called today told me that they were hoarding as well, they're paying roughly half what they paid a month ago and weren't even sure they could sell what they currently have next year.

Oh, I got the graph from this site: http://greenitudes.com/recycling
I looked that site over and they had some pretty relevant stuff on it. The ROI is or was better for aluminum than, say steel scrap metal... Copper on the other hand has a better ROI considering ONLY these factors:

How heavy the damn stuff is

Steel beams are hard on your back

Steel beams are hard on your pick up truck

How much can you get for the time spent/invested?

The problem with scraping copper is that every one is doing it, it's virtually impossible to ask someone: "can I have that copper please?" and have them say "Yeah, sure, go ahead".

Everyone and their brother collects copper, the local plumbing contractor knows what the stuff is worth, it's so high he can afford to have his employees go to the scrap yard ON THE CLOCK!.

If you found this post interesting you might want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe to Dumpster Diving for Instant Cash via email to make sure you catch the latest posts

The news Media bombarded us with "the police can't get enough ammunition because the military used it all" ...

So there's not much ROI in going after copper, not if everyone is into the mix.
What WE want to do is... do something that pays us, but everyone else thinks: "it's not worth it"... we want our ROI to be high enough, but we want to keep our hand close to our chests (poker analogy)

So... go get aluminium but hoard it, keep it somewhere, stash it...

Why?

Because we had a mild summer in the US, it IS going to get cold.. and the frigid weather WILL send the price of aluminium UP

Instant Cash when you need it. To my knowledge computer monitors don't have any recycling cash value. The motherboards and PC cards that fit in motherboards have trace amounts of precious metals in the and will yield a tiny bit of folding money.

Today's recommendation:
Hoard Aluminum

Sit on it until the price goes back up!

Having started into this hobby that pays cash with Scrap Steel, and having heavy steel wreck my back and ruin the front brakes of my pick up truck, I resolved to seek mostly scrap aluminum over heavy steel.

Right now I'd suggest we hoard our aluminum due to the fact that the scrap yards are only paying a little more than half what we got paid for scrap aluminum just a few months ago.

Gasoline prices haven't been this low for a year, and prices paid for aluminum are LOWER than Gas was a year ago.

For example, when gas prices were at todays level a year ago we got paid $.40 to $.50 a pound for cans. Yesterday from Reliable Recycling in Frederick Maryland I received the following prices:

Mixed Aluminum- $.20 pound
Aluminum siding- $.30 pound
Aluminum cans- $.35 pound

The pieces of aluminum window frames that I got from the window company dumpster I hit regularly see this post from earlier in this blog) were not paid at the rate extruded pays...

I hadn't gone to the trouble of cleaning the zinc clips that hold the glass to the window so they only paid me for mixed aluminum.
Instant Cash when you need it. (AA:
alcoa inc com, the world's largest aluminum producer, predicted continued strong demand for the metal this year amid tight supply, analysts took a second look at their own forecasts - and wondered if they looked too light.

A lot depends on China.
The country, which has been driving global demand for aluminum, has also been building up its production facilities. Last year, it restarted several plants turning out alumina, the granular raw material used to make aluminum, and ramped up aluminum output.

After that steep increase, China's production growth could cool this year

The plain fact of the matter is that the price paid depends on the price the scrap processors can sell aluminum for... and no one I've found wants to post current prices in Maryland.

The price paid is too volatile... it can change before a day is ended.

When one goolges for 'what is the price of aluminum in maryland' all one gets is 2 year old or 4 year old posts.

I'll be visiting my local scrap recycler soon and post today's prices, but those can change before I even get home from the scrap yard.

I'm not going to reveal where I go... I drove past a warehouse in an industrial park in Columbia or Baltimore County Maryland to see which ones had dumpsters over filled.

2.) Looked around to see if the warehouse also had pallets piled up.

3.) Checked out the sizes of and condition of those pallets. The pallets that are in demand and easily sold to a pallet reconditioning outfit are: 48" X 40".
If the pile of pallets were NOT the 'good ones', if they were rotting, broken etc. THEN...

4.) I walked up to the shipping and receiving clerk and asked who was in charge. I offered to take away ALL of the pallets, good ones or not in exchange for permission to pull scrap metal out of his/her dumpster.

Mission accomplished!

I sold what ever pallets were any good and arranged to have EXCLUSIVE access to the scrap metal!

I really did this, it works.

I did make money doing this, but never had a truck this big.

Do the math... each one of those pallets is worth $1.00 wholesale, $3 wholesale if the pallets are 'two way'. A two way pallet is the one that has notches cut into the 'runners'. So are Toro lawnmowers, cast aluminum.

Cast aluminum is brittle, it'll break if you hit it with a hammer.

Ingot Aluminum, well unless you're a Commercial Forgery that builds Aluminum engine blocks, you're not likely to see much Ingot Aluminum in a dumpster.

What scrap yards pay the most for is Extruded Aluminum

Extrusion is a process used in manufacturing to fabricate parts of uniform cross-sections by squeezing the material through a high-pressure outlet. A die is used to give the desired shape to the extruded metal. While many metals are used for extrusion, aluminum is most widely used for the advantages it offers. Aluminum extrusions form 50% of the total extruded products market

From http://www.zycon.com/Design-Info/Aluminum-Extrusions/Aluminum-Extrusions.asp
Instant Cash when you need it. a measly dozen pallets?

Volume, scale of economy is the rule here.

Note from someone who has done this... a pick up by itself is insufficient, you gotta get a trailer, a landscape trailer or a car carrier trailer or else you're wearing out your truck's suspension and getting splinters for nothing.

One last item about pallets and steel.

Remember those earlier posts where I said warehouses will GIVE you Valuable scrap steel?

You go in, offer to clean out his broken pallet pile, bring him a few clean sturdy pallets for sale and you start looking more like a valuable resource than a pain in the a** looking for a handout.

I'm not kidding here... a warehouse loaded an entire broke down forklift on my trailer, then gave me $300 worth of copper... and ran off all the other guys competing with me.

Do something for him that no one else wants to do and make a friend.

Business is supposed to be a partnership, business is NOT supposed to be adversarial
.
Instant Cash when you need it. I used to burn it off by dousing it with gas... but that creates heavy black smoke that attracts the wrong attention from your neighbors and especially from the local fire department... I don't recommend doing that, this is experience talking here.

If you take the time to strip off what ever insulator is covering the wire, you'll get paid for Bright Copper!

Copper has been rising in demand so much because of the military's demand for ammunition. A while back I even read an article to the effect of that some police departments had a hard time getting some ammo because the military was taking precedent over the available stock.

And this blog's title is about actually going into a dumpster (with permission) to pull out the scrap metal:

Here's a pic of an actual dumpster that I rummaged through almost daily. It's a window company factory in Jessup Maryland:

If you're going to get permission to do this, there are some ground rules you have to communicate to the shipping & receiving clerk or he/she's not likely to grant permission:

clean up after yourself, don't leave screws or shards of glass that'll puncture the companies truck tires when you pull stuff out of the dumpster

don't do it so publicly, the insurance person for that company is likely to put an end to your getting permission if the wrong person see's you diving in to a dumpster on a commercial property

a word on insurance... the shipping & receiving person's job is to cut costs.

A dumpster company charges three things to a company that rents a dumpster:

monthly rent on the can

a haul charge

the dump fee is based on tonnage, the company renting the dumpster HAS TO PAY THAT TONNAGE

that last line is the whole ball of wax!

If you come every week, on time, with a preset schedule... like clockwork
so the guy in charge of the dock can depend on your showing up.

they'll leave the heavy stuff outside FOR YOU

they'll even load it into your pick up using THEIR forklift!

I've done it, this is not hypothetical... these guys have to answer to a boss.
that boss is going to want to see the expenses going DOWN not UP.

they pay by the ton for trash removal... make his/her job easier and they'll give you the cash (scrap)they're synonyms:)
Instant Cash when you need it. In the scrap industry, prices are volatile, they can go up and down quickly.

The geographical distance from a scrap yard to where ever the processed scrap ends up can have a big impact on the prices that a scrap yard is willing to pay you.

Supply and Demand

I learned what I know about dumpster diving by actually driving a Roll Off Truck. The companies that I worked for usually delivered dumpsters to construction sites, and buildings being demolished. I was amazed to see $400 CASH or MORE being paid to the Roll Off company. Often the construction company that hired us either didn't know or didn't care if we had to pay to get rid of the load or if we got PAID to get rid of the load... they were concerned solely with getting paid to finish the job.

I learned where the scrap yards were physically located, what hours they were open, WHEN they closed (get stuck in traffic with a loaded tractor trailer and you'll pay attention to if you can make it by closing or not)... and HOW MUCH each scrap yard paid!!

How much a scrap yard would pay for what type of material was something that I was personally VERY concerned about. How the scrap yard determined what they were going to pay (and it could vary each day)was none of my business (even though I attempted to find out everything I could about the business)... for the most part I was told that Supply and Demand drove the whole show. For example in Baltimore (a major seaport), in 2004 China was buying up all the scrap steel it could get it's hands on. (that may not be true in 2008)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi6DJX7QThIZ6pZ6JIBx5MUnLclqjKtEDxWs7-fWw9BoAeksiKU8jAOPsYSi8fK1SOsM9cLqFOcTAWl9oM9xX9eECQFvzpgmVvvgWvhggE65DGbOidX709b5oe3bZgWp-r5_BFhw/s400/rolloff.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259279837417017730" />

Soon afterwards I started going through the loaded dumpsters that were left at our Roll Off yard and pulling out what steel would fit in my pick up truck.

Not all scrap yards are created equal

Some scrap yards had a double standard!

You pull on the scales with 15 tons and you can expect a certain price and a bigger degree of latitude on weather the load is classified #1 steel or tin.

Pull on the scales with 1000 lbs in a pick up (get a visual on the bumper scraping the asphalt because you've overloaded your pick up's suspension) and you'll get treated quite another way.

Of the hundreds of loads I personally brought into a dozen or so scrap yards all over East Baltimore, Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Laurel Maryland... I found out real quick who was fair and who thought of you as a pain in the a** to be ignored.

Come in with a CDL truck and get one thing, come in with a pick up and get another.

Reliable Recycling in Frederick Maryland

http://reliablerecyclingcenter.com

Not one of the above mentioned scrap yards in all four states I worked in treated us more fairly that Reliable Recycling.... they pay the same if you have 400 lbs because you didn't have access to a forklift, and if you have 2000 lbs loaded on a trailer behind your pick up.

About the Pennsylvania paying more than Maryland bit:

It seems my friend that hauled his steel up to Pennsylvania went there not because the prices paid were a bit higher (the cost of gas to get there made this not make sense)... he took it up there more because the place he took it to weren't as picky as to if it was legal or not

All I can speak with authority about is what I've seen... in 2004 if you took an abandoned car to a scrap yard you had to have the title to it if it was newer than 1986. If you took in a car older than 1986 you did not have to prove you owned the car

Some scrap yards will make you give them ID before they'll accept what you bring in.

Why?

what if later it turns out you stole that:

copper gutter

aluminum radiator

Air conditioning condensor

Roll of heavy cable with copper inside

???

Some smaller scrap yards might look the other way... which is why some scrappers are willing to travel farther to off their load.

I'm now wondering if my buddy that took me up to PA did so not because they paid more...

That picture of a Roll Off Truck above?

I drove that truck for a year before my Dad died and I moved from Baltimore to Frederick Maryland. I did that companies website and they gave me a pick up in return.

http://web.archive.org/web/20040210050203/http://www.hazardouswastepros.com/

PS) someone asked me why I blog on so many topics... well, I do Search Engine Optimization in Frederick Maryland... I can hit any target in any target market, get a website to rank in the top ten at will.

These smaller blogs create advertising income for me, If I get paid a nickle a day for each article at the end of the year I found I made about $18 for a half hours work... pretty nice rate of return even if I do have to wait a year to get paid.
Instant Cash when you need it.
