IFFCO has starts selling urea in 45-kg bags in the Katihar district and become first urea company to do so.

The government has notified that urea, the highly subsidised fertiliser, will be sold in the market in a 45-kg bag instead of 50-kg from 1st Mar. 2018. The government has also permitted fertiliser companies to sell the old stock of 50-kg bags for next two months.

The purpose is to reduce urea consumption and promote balanced use of fertilisers. Since urea is cheaper than other fertilisers, farmers are using this product widely.

Normally, farmers use urea by counting number of bags for each hectare of land. When farmers are told to reduce the number of 50-kg bags, they do not listen. So, the government has decided to promote use of 45-kg bag as a trick to reduce consumption.

A 45-kg urea bag will be sold at Rs 242 excluding taxes, a government notification said.

The price is determined on the basis of government's fixed price of Rs 5,360 per tonne. The Centre bears the difference between the maximum retail price (MRP) and cost of production.

Coal based fertilizer manufacturing with coal gasification technology is going to be implemented for the first time in the country, with lower production cost and minimal emission. This urea will be cheaper in cost and farmers will get urea in less rates. This coal-urea is going to be available Rs 10,000 per tonne cheaper than present rates.

Maharashtra Government has already allotted a piece of land to the US based firm, and Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has agreed for coal linkage to the proposed plant. Coal is available in abundance in Vidarbha Region.

Presently urea manufacturing units are either gas based on naphtha based and both the process are costly than this new technology of producing urea from coal. The technology is eco-friendly and being implemented in Chandrapur as a pilot plant. Once it is successful, it could be replicated in other plants.

Hopefully the project would start producing urea in 36 months.

Urea producer, public sector giant Kribhco is all set to stablish a 6 lakh tonnes per annum P&K plant in Krishnapatnam, Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 1000 crores. This project would be completed in next four years. The company would double it's capacity later on to make it 12 lakh tonnes per annum.

Presently Kribhco producing 22 lakh tonnes of urea per annum at Hazira Gujrat. It has one plant in Shahjahanpur U.P. in partnership with Shyam Group to produce urea. Capacity of this plant is 10 lakh tonnes per annum. Besides this Kribhco has one another plant in Oman in partnership with Iffco.

Kribhco wants to tap the incentives AP government offering to new enterant in the state. The government will provide power at Rs 1 per unit for next 10 years. VAT will also not to be charged for next 7 years. Besides this lots of other incentives are being offered by the state government. Kribhco has done the calculations and excepts Rs 500 crores savings by government incentives.

The Union Government has announced to produce Urea from Talcher Fertilizer by using coal gassification technology from 2018. Once operation is resumed, the plant will annually produce 13 lakh tonne of urea per annum. Government plans to laid foundation stone in November this year.

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has informed that Urea produced by this coal gassification technology will cost Rs 2 to 3 thousand less per tonne and farmers will get the benefit from this.

Present NDA Government has decided to revive the sick urea units in Uttar Pradesh(Gorakhpur), Bihar (Barauni), Odisha (Talcher) and Jharkhand (Sindri) by investing Rs 40000 crores. This Talcher Revival Project will cost Rs 9000 crores to the Government.

If we look back to Talcher Fertilizer (Odissa), it started urea production in 1980 with the capacity of 1500 tpd Urea and 900 tpd Ammonia. At that time the company had 1400 permanent employees and 3000 casual workers.

The company declared sick in 1991 by the government and sent it to the Board of Financial and Industrial Reconstruction (BIFR) for making a survival program. Though production continued till 1999, when the NDA government ordered to stop manufacturing urea from the plant. As a result, about 1200 employees were given voluntary retirement from the plant in 2002.
Last month only, Tata Chemicals had sold its fertilizers business to Norway's Yara Chemicals for Rs 2670 crores.

Tatas and Birlas are large established players in fertilizer industry and they are leaving the industry means a serious condition. Infact Government is not fulfilling it's promises. There is no guarantee of capital gain which was promised. Subsidy payments get delayed for several months due to which companies faces cash flow problem. Birla fertilizers had earnings of Rs 209 crores on revenues of Rs 2498 crores which comes to a return of 11% in FY16. One can earn this much of money from bank deposit without taking any tension of running a large factory.

Indo Gulf Fertilizer is India's 8th largest Urea producer and they are thinking to leave the industry. As per a banking source, sale would be complete by the next financial year.

On the other hand some of the industrialists are pouring huge amount in the fertilizers industry. Chambal group is investing Rs 5000 crores to set up a plant and a multinational purchasing Tata Chemicals.

Essar Oil Ltd. has commenced supply of CBM, presently at around 200,000 scmd, for pre-commissioning activities to Matix Fertilisers.

The stranded Rs 6000 crore Marix Fertilizers that is wholly dependent on the scaling up of CBM production from Essar Oil, is the world’s largest single stream 1.3 MTPA urea plant and the first designed for CBM as the feedstock.

The plant needs 2.4 mmscmd of gas but Essar will be able to ramp up production to 2 mmscmd only by March, 2017. Further the unit can go into full production only by mid 2017-18 when output will be ramped up further from the CBM field.

It's a good news for farmers.

The company will purchase fruit of neem (nimori), usually discarded as waste, at the rate of Rs 15 a kilo. Farmers can visit any IFFCO office to sell nimori.

As the government has made it mandatory for fertiliser firms to produce neem-coated urea, the demand for neem extracts is expected to rise. The IFFCO has already planted over 1.5 lakh neem saplings.

Neem coated urea is eco-friendly, cost effective and has efficiency advantages. IFFCO also plans to process the nimori to make agro-based products like oil and fertilizers.

Last financial year 2015-16,urea imports were at 84.74 lakh tonnes, a drop of 3.41%, due to higher domestic production. Official data records show India’s urea imports stood at 87.49 lakh tonnes in the fiscal of 2014-15. The production of urea reached its highest ever capacity of 245 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, a surge of 20 lakh tonnes from the previous output in 2014-15.

Last year, neem coated urea was made compulsory by the government, as it works as an insecticide and is beneficial to the soil. The coating of urea with neem also helps in diverting the fertiliser to be used for non-agricultural purposes in the industry.

The annual demand of urea in India is estimated to be 300 lakh tonnes, while output was stagnant at about 220 lakh tonnes in the last few years. The country had to import urea to meet the rest of the demand.

In India, urea is a controlled fertiliser and is marketed at a fixed price of Rs.5,360 a tonne. The subsidy is based on the difference between the selling price and cost of production, which is then given to the producers.

USA based company International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) is working on developing innovative procedures to improve nutrients uptake and at the same time reduce external impacts. The company CEO Amit Roy says that there is a lot of scope to innovate in the fertilizer sector.

The company has developed model called Urea Deep Placement (UDP) model. In this model prilled urea is compacted into larger briquettes of urea, which are then implanted deeper into the soil, at around 7-10cm depth. This model has been used successfully in rice farming in Bangladesh. With this innovative method the nitrogen consumption has been reduced by 30-35% and rice yields has been increased by 15-18%.

The technology we are using at present had been developed in the USA over 30 years ago. Now the time has come to produce more food as the world population is increasing. So its the need of time to innovate new methods to improve production.

Urea Deep Placement (UDP) model is now ready to use in Africa and across Asia after being successfully implemented in Bangladesh.

Stay tuned to Fertilizer News for getting more details on Urea Deep Placement (UDP) model !

There is lot of research is going on in the field of nano particles. At the University of Delaware at Newark USA, scientists have discovered a nano particle namely Hydroxy Apatite Nano particles (HANPs). This nano particle shows a unique behavior of slowing the release of phosphorous in soil. So it could be used as phosphorus nano fertilizer.

The nano particle based phosphorous fertilizer has three major advantages over conventional phosphorous fertilizer.
1. It does not release phosphorous as quickly as the conventional fertilizers.
2. It does not change the soil pH upon phosphorus release and the loss of phosphorous from soil is low.
3.The slow and steady release of phosphorus allows plants to continuously take up the nutrient as they grow.

Stay tuned to Fertilizer News for getting more details on Nano Particle based Phosphorous Fertilizer !
