Working together with the local community the BLM partnered with the United Desert Gateway to provide an additional restroom in the Imperial Sand Dunes. The restroom was installed in September at the popular Osborne Overlook. Osborne Overlook receives almost 90,000 visitors annually!

Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area

The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is the largest stretch of sand dunes in California. A large swath of the dunes is open for dune buggies, ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes, to carve in and out of the dunes that can reach upward of 300 feet. These dunes attract hundreds of thousands of off-highway vehicles annually during the peak riding season, from late October to April.

Riders will soon have another reason to visit, as 40,000 acres of the dunes are being reopened to OHV's. With the added 40,000 acres, the dunes now stretch for more than 40 miles into Mexico and average at about 5 to 8 miles wide.

If flying over sand dunes in an OHV isn't your cup of tea, the entirety of the Algodones Dunes system is open to hikers and horses. The best area for this is north of CA 78 in the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness. There you can find the tallest dunes, and since OHVs are restricted from entering, there are an abundance of unusual plants and wildlife.

The beauty of the dunes is that there is a variety of experiences to have while you're here. And just like the harsh, desert landscape, those experiences can be unpredictable, dangerous or, in my case, incredibly rewarding. You can spend the day with thousands of OHVs, or you can sprawl out on a dune at night and stargaze in isolation.

To experience the Imperial Sand Dunes, you don't need a tricked-out dune buggy to have a great time, but it probably wouldn't hurt if you did.

If you plan to visit these dunes, here are some recommend locations:

North Algodones Dunes Wilderness: This protected wilderness area has the largest dunes, withan abundant variety of plant and wildlife. OHVs are restricted here, but it's open to hikers and horses.

Osborne Overlook: Popular with day visitors, the overlook offers scenic views of the dunes in Glamis. They are easily accessible from the parking lot for short hiking sessions.

Plank Road: A 1,500-foot stretch of decaying wooden planks is all that remains of the first attempt to lay a road across the Imperial Sand Dunes, in 1916.

Glamis Beach Store: If your OHV is in need of repair after a long day of riding in Glamis, this is basically your only option. The store, at 5775 E. U.S. 78 in Brawley, offers parts and other supplies. Be prepared to pay a premium for pretty much everything in the store, because it's the only one for miles.

U.S.-Mexico border fence: If you're driving past Buttercup Valley on I-8, you can catch a glimpse of the towering border fence. It's about a mile south of the Buttercup campgrounds and can be easily accessed by OHV. Legally, you can go right up to the fence, but don't be surprised if Border Patrol agents on ATVs question you as you get close.

Sand Drags: OHV enthusiasts gather for impromptu "sand drags" on Friday and Saturday afternoons along Gecko Road in Glamis and also in Gordons Well during the riding season.

Dunes Management Plan Implementation to Begin This Weekend

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will begin implementation of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Management Plan this weekend with the help of volunteers who will collect existing closure boundary signs and assist with signing the re-designated Pierson’s Milk-vetch critical habitat closure area.

According to BLM officials, the field work needed to re-designate open and closed areas, printing revised recreation area maps, as well as general education and outreach, means recreation area users will enjoy the additional acres of riding at the beginning of next dunning season in October 2014.

Implementing the RAMP is consistent with the BLM California strategic framework. The RAMP addresses sustainability of natural resources by protecting critical habitat for Pierson's Milk-vetch, while providing new opportunities for family-friendly OHV recreation. Implementing the RAMP also ensures continued economic benefits for our local communities who provide goods and services to the families that visit the dunes. In addition, the RAMP creates opportunities for BLM to partner with groups like the American Sand Association (ASA) to help the BLM promote public safety and environmental education to visitors.

“The BLM is excited to work together with the local community, partners, and visitors who will assist us in the signing project,” said Thomas Zale, El Centro Field Manager. “Participating also educates the OHV community about BLM’s multiple use mission. The closure changes will bring about new opportunities to explore parts of the dunes that were not accessible before.”

Off-Roading at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area

The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest sand dunes open to off-highway vehicle use in the United States. The dunes begin 10 miles southeast of Niland and stretch all the way into Mexico, over 40 miles away. The Dunes vary in width from about a quarter mile at the top end of the Mammoth Wash area, to about 5 miles in width below Highway 78. The Algodones Sand Dune system covers 1,000 square miles, making it one of the largest dune complexes in North America

Permits

Entry into the recreation area requires a permit, seven-day permits cost $50 at an on-site ranger station, but they can be found for $35 at a number of off-site locations in Yuma, Ariz., El Centro, and Brawley. If you want to purchase permits before your trip, you can order them at www.imperialsanddunes.net and if you choose to visit the dunes frequently, the seasonal permits cost $150.

ATV / UTV Rentals

OHV rentals are available in Yuma, El Centro and even in the vendor area in Glami Flats. Prices start at around $25 hourly for a small ATV and can cost upward of $80 an hour for a four-seater dune buggy. Day rates are also available for those planning on camping at the dunes. Rentals are pretty easy to find now, as the peak season comes to an end, but if you want to make a trip late in the year, when it's cooler (summer highs can reach over 110 degrees), it's best to make a reservation.

Camping Areas

Most popular riding area is along highway 78 which is the Glamis area. Camping is available along Gecko Road, Osborne Overlook, Glamis Flats and the Washes. To the south, there is Gordons Well which is on the north side of Interstate 8 and Buttercup with is on the south side. On the southeast side there is Olgibly, and if you want to get away from the crowds, you can head to the northern end of the dunes and ride at Mammoth Wash.

Wilderness

The large area in between highway 78 and Mammoth Wash is set aside as a Wilderness Area and no OHVs are allowed. The North Algodones Dunes Wilderness area is 25,895 acres. The wilderness is divided into two distinct zones. On the west side are the primary dunes, the largest and tallest dunes composed of relatively coarse sand. On the east are the secondary dunes, smaller and composed of generally finer sands carried further east by prevailing winds.

Turbocharged RZR XPs Take on Sand Mountain

Although the build on "The Beast" was completed for the 2013 Sand Sports Super Show, I have been so busy with press intros, King of the Hammers and other projects that I haven't been able to spend some quality time duning with it. Well, that all changed in March 2014 when I planned a trip to do some video work with the Copter Kids at Sand Mountain and invited Tim from SDR Motorsports to bring "Betsy" up to play.

The Copter Kids use compact unmanned aerial platforms and a RZR XP 1000 to get shots from angles that really show off their subjects. I met them at Sand Mountain on a trip after Christmas and was impressed with the test video they put together (see Copter Kids test video at Sand Mountain). I figured my turbo RZR would be a perfect vehicle to for their next subject. Having the other SDR car along made it all the more fun.

Ending a 14-year closure, about 40,000 acres of the popular Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area will be opened to off-road vehicles this fall after a federal court judge overruled environmentalists’ objections.

The land had been placed off limits to protect the Peirson’s milk vetch, a perennial herb listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The 250-square-mile recreation site in Imperial County is one of the most popular off-roading areas in Southern California, drawing an estimated 1.2 million visitors a year. It’s commonly known as Glamis for the small town there — the name popularized on T-shirts, decals and bumper stickers.

Off-road enthusiasts celebrated the decision by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston of the Northern District Court of California in San Francisco. Her ruling last week upholds a 2013 management plan adopted by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management that includes lifting most of the milk-vetch closure.

“It’s an excellent riding area,” said Jim Bramham, a board member of the American Sand Association, on Monday. “It’s been historically some of the best open dunes for people who like to do long, lineal rides and explore the desert.”

Bramham’s group was one of 10 that helped fight the lawsuit challenging the BLM’s plan. The American Sand Association’s website urges riders to stay out of closed areas until the BLM removes red off-limits stakes.

The largest area that will reopen is in the center of the dunes, with a small portion south of Interstate 8 and another in the northern section near Highway 78, Bramham said.

The dunes are the largest such formation in North America, covering almost 200,000 acres in southeast Imperial County, near the U.S.-Mexico border. The area also is known as the Algodones Dunes.

Officials with the Center for Biological Diversity, which filed the lawsuit, said they are considering whether to appeal the decision.

In her ruling, Illston found that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is overdue in issuing a recovery plan for the Peirson’s milk vetch, and ordered one done by 2019.

The court order maintains closure of 9,261 acres of critical habitat deemed necessary for plant’s survival, as well as 26,000 acres of the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness that is permanently closed to vehicles.

The remainder, more than 127,000 acres, will be open to sand rails, motorcycles, four-wheelers and other off-highway vehicles.

Ileene Anderson, a biologist with the Center for Biological Diversity, worries about enforcement of the closures.

“The critical habitat follows the geography of the dunes. It looks like a big comb. I don’t know how they’ll be able to enforce keeping trespassing from happening in these areas that look like fingers going out from the backbone of the comb,” she said.

Terry Weiner, conservation coordinator for the Desert Protective Council in San Diego, said she has seen evidence of traffic in a closure area she regularly visits off Interstate 8 near the Buttercup Campground.

“People weren’t respecting that closure. They were riding through there,” said Weiner, who noticed many of the red stakes buried in sand or ridden over when she was there last month.

“That is the only place that the Peirson’s milk vetch lives on the entire planet,” she said. “The seeds can stay alive in sand for up to 20 years, but that requires the sand not being constantly turned up by tires, which dries them out.”

The Bureau of Land Management will work with off-roading groups to educate the public and develop new maps and signs to direct riders away from closures.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that locations previously identified as closed for off-highway vehicle (OHV) use will change in the fall of 2014. A recent court decision paved the way for the BLM to implement the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP), allowing for increased OHV riding opportunities in the recreation area and for better protection of natural resource values such as the Peirson's milkvetch.

Implementation of the Imperial Sand Dunes RAMP requires education and outreach such as new maps and signing directing riders to open areas and away from closures intended to protect critical habitat for Peirson's milkvetch. The BLM will seek assistance from local partners to help with this effort in preparation for the upcoming 2014-2015 season and requests that visitors continue to respect all existing regulatory signs until they are changed.

"Visitors to the Imperial Sand Dunes have patiently waited for implementation of the new RAMP, and we are very excited that new riding opportunities are just around the corner," said El Centro Field Manager Thomas Zale. "I appreciate the cooperative spirit of our dunes visitors and will be working hard with staff and partners to get ready for great times next season in America's Great Outdoors!"

Group sues county, State Parks to ban off-highway vehicles at Oceano Dunes

Frustrated by what they see as a lack of progress in controlling dust blowing from the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, a group of Nipomo Mesa residents has sued the county and the State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division.

The group Mesa Community Alliance filed the lawsuit Thursday in San Luis Obispo Superior Court. It asks a judge to bar off-highway vehicle riding in the Oceano Dunes until State Parks fully complies with a dust control rule adopted by the county Air Pollution Control District in November 2011.

“State Parks and the county are public agencies whose highest priority should be the protection of public health,” said Arlene Versaw, spokeswoman for the plaintiff group. “The county has taken no meaningful action whatsoever, and State Parks appears not to want to take even the smallest steps.”

The county was included as a defendant in the lawsuit because it owns the 584-acre La Grande Tract in the center of the riding area of the park. Tim McNulty with the Office of the County Counsel said he is aware of the lawsuit and plans to brief the county Board of Supervisors on it Tuesday.

“We shouldn’t discuss it in the press until we have a chance to discuss it with the board,” he said.

On windy days, dust from the park blows onto the Nipomo Mesa, where air quality frequently exceeds state standards for particulate pollution. High particulate levels have been linked to a variety of health effects including asthma and other lung problems as well as cardiovascular disease.

A scientific study conducted by the air district concluded that OHV riding contributes to the dust pollution problem. Greater levels of dust originate from the riding area of the park than from the nonriding area, the study concluded.

Brent Marshall, Oceano Dunes superintendent, said the park is making progress toward implementing dust control measures, but progress has been slow because of mediation between State Parks and state and county air officials.

“I sympathize with the frustrations of the residents,” he said. “We are hoping to move forward quicker.”

Park officials plan to test a series of dust control measures starting in March when the spring windy season begins, Marshall said. These include installing wind fencing as well as distributing 5,000 to 6,000 hay bales in a buffer area downwind of the riding area.

Both of these techniques slow the wind as it blows over open sand dunes, reducing its ability to pick up tiny sand particles and blow them into residential areas. A long-term dust control plan for the Dunes is expected to be complete in the fall.

Versaw said she is aware that dust control measures will be tested but doubts they will be effective.

“I have no reason to believe that this will be anything more than a half-hearted attempt to do anything,” she said.

The Mesa Community Alliance was formed in 2010 and is intended to advocate for issues of common interest to Nipomo Mesa residents, Versaw said. The group fought against the Nipomo Community Services District’s effort to increase property taxes through an assessment district to pay for a water pipeline project from Santa Maria.

Idaho Dunes UTV Invasion - Labor Day Weekend

The Idaho Dunes UTV Invasion is set for Labor Day Weekend 2014. This UTV event is being organized by Jon Crowley of UTVGuide.net and Dave Kuskie at Fullerton Sand Sports and will be based at Idaho Dunes RV. This casual gathering is open to industry, enthusiasts and media with a goal having UTVs dominate the dunes for the weekend.

There will be plenty of group rides, hill climb competitions and camp fires, plus Idaho Dunes RV will be hosting a BBQ and Show & Shine competition during the weekend.

Idaho Dunes RV has reserved a block of full-hookup RV sites for the event that will go fast, but they also have 25 acres of dry camp area for overflow or if you’d prefer to circle your wagons. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes Recreation Area contains over 10,000 acres of massive contiguous sand dunes and is widely known for offering the largest bowls and smoothest free riding area in the country.

Along with Jon Crowley of UTVGuide.net, Neal Rideout of Neal Rideout Photography will be at Idaho Dunes RV to help photograph the action.

El Cajon, Calif. – FOX recently made its Dual Speed Compression (DSC) adjuster available for trucks, Jeeps, and off-road vehicles. The addition of DSC in a truck shock application provides added control and comfort tuning for on-road use while also offering more aggressive damping for use off-road. The adjuster allows for precise suspension tuning with the simple twist of two clearly defined knobs: No tools and no mess, just a way to easily fine-tune your suspension to best suit your needs in any conditions.

With DSC, you can adjust the shock's low-speed and high-speed compression damping by simply turning the external adjuster knobs. The billet 6061-T6 anodized aluminum knobs increases both low and high-speed levels by 25%, allowing you to maximize small bump compliance and traction while still having the extra damping required for big hits.

The DSC’s gold low-speed compression (LSC) adjuster knob offers 10 clicks of adjustment and primarily affects compression damping during slow suspension movements such as G-outs or smooth jump landings. It also affects wheel traction and the harshness or plushness of the vehicle’s ride. The DSC’s blue high-speed compression (HSC) adjuster knob offers 12 clicks of adjustment and mainly affects compression damping during medium to fast suspension movements such as steep jump faces, harsh flat landings, and aggressive wash board roads.

The DSC is mated to a large 2.5-inch 6061-T8 aluminum external reservoir that dissipates heat faster than the previous steel reservoir, providing precise control no matter how hard you push your shocks. The aluminum reservoir is anodized black and provides the shock with an increase in oil and nitrogen capacity. Capping off the reservoir is an integrated O-ring sealed cover for the FOX Air Valve (FAV). The new capping system provides an increased level of safety to ensure the valve is not damaged or discharged while battling the elements of off-road driving.

Available applications of the new DSC adjuster include the 3.0 Factory Series Coil-over Internal Bypass Adjustable for Ford SVT Raptor and 2.5 Factory Series Internal Bypass Adjustable Reservoir smooth body shocks for Jeep Wrangler JKs, as well as all 2.5 Factory Series Coil-over Adjustable Reservoir shocks. From the beginning, the Arctic Cat Wildcat set a new standard in pure-sport ROV performance thanks to a chassis and suspension combo that was purpose-built to conquer all types of gnarly terrain. For 2014 the Wildcat X is better than ever with enhanced braking performance, FOX shocks and new steering geometry.

The all-new upscaled Wildcat X Limited adds full-aluminum doors, a sleek molded roof, Elka Stage 5 shocks, aluminum beadlock wheels and 27-in. ITP Black Water Evolution Tires. Inspired by desert race vehicles, the Wildcats’ exoskeleton frame features a 40-/60-percent front/rear weight distribution for optimal handling at high speed. The driver and passenger are located near the low center of gravity, leaving them less affected by the movements of the vehicle with greater confidence and control.

With an industry-leading 17/18 inches of front/ rear suspension travel and 13 inches of ground clearance, both Wildcats deliver comfort and control in nearly every condition. The 5-point, multi-link trailing-arm rear suspension design keeps the rear tires planted while the suspension moves through its travel for unmatched traction and control.

To smooth out the industry leading suspension travel, the Wildcat X has FOX Podium gas shocks, which deliver outstanding dampening duties complete with 23-position compression adjustment. The idea that you could remotely adjust the compression or rebound on one, two or all four of your shocks without ever leaving the drivers seat seems almost too good to be true. But that is just what JRi Shocks showed us at the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas last week.

JRi Shocks is a relatively new name in the off-road world but it’s quickly making strides as one of the leading innovators in the UTV market. While the company is only 7 years old, the minds behind the madness have a much longer history in both the off-road world and motorsports in general.

In addition to the wireless app system, JRide is also available in a hardwired system that can be controlled by a series of paddles mounted directly behind the steering wheel. The paddle system allows for instantaneous adjustments while the vehicle is moving or even in the air.

Camp RZR in Glamis used as RZR XP 4 1000 press intro location

RZR XP 4 1000 at Camp RZR in Glamis

Halloween is typically the kickoff to the Southwest desert season, and this year Polaris rang it in big with another Camp RZR event in Glamis. Glamis is located in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area which is the largest sand dunes open to off-highway vehicle use in the United States. The dunes begin 10 miles southeast of Niland and stretch all the way into Mexico, over 40 miles away. The dunes vary in width from about a quarter mile at the top end of the Mammoth Wash area, to about 5 miles in width below Highway 78. The Algodones Sand Dune system covers 1,000 square miles, making it one of the largest dune complexes in North America.

Glamis is affectionately known to enthusiasts as the Sand Dune Capital of the World and Polaris came back here once again to thank RZR owners with a Camp RZR that had a footprint that was twice as big as last year's event at New Years. And it is no wonder why Polaris chose Glamis to celebrate. Glamis is the ultimate playground for sport UTVs and it is dominated by RZRs.

It is hard for me to imagine that it was just three months ago that Polaris introduced the RZR XP 1000. The 1000 was quickly welcomed with open arms by enthusiasts and aftermarket alike at the 2013 Sand Sports Super Show, and everyone was eager for the four-seat version to be announced. They didn't have to wait long as Halloween at Camp RZR was also the location where Polaris invited editors to not only try out the new RZR XP 4 1000, but also send us home with our own demo units!

Imperial Sand Dunes Begins New Recreation Season

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) El Centro Field Office seasonal park rangers and law enforcement officers have geared up and are on duty for the beginning of a busy, family-friendly season in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA). Ranger stations at Cahuilla and Buttercup opened on Friday, October 25, 2013 to assist visitors.

In a continuing partnership, the BLM and Imperial County Sheriff's Office will be working together to emphasize public safety and resource protection. Visitor contacts will be aimed at education and outreach while priorities for enforcement will include alcohol and drugs, fee compliance, and the existing administrative closures.

El Centro Field Office Manager Thomas Zale said, "We are looking forward to welcoming our visitors to the Imperial Sand Dunes and want to encourage people to recreate safely in this expanse of America's Great Outdoors. Please purchase your permits in advance, honor the closures and other rules, avoid drinking and driving, and have a great time. Your safety is our number one priority."

The RZR XP 4 1000 is the ultimate multi-passenger side-by-side, with all the same attributes as the RZR XP 1000: 107 horsepower ProStar™ engine with a true 999 ccs of displacement, 3-Link Trailing Arm Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) with exclusive Walker Evans position-sensitive, anti-bottoming needle shocks, the first-OEM offered 29 in/73.7 cm Maxxis Bighorn tires, high-strength tubular chassis and a high-performance on demand all-wheel drive system; with the addition of the most advanced suspension for performance driving and family cruising, and additional cabin comforts to not only accommodate two more passengers, but also provide the smoothest, most-enjoyable ride on a high-performance side-by-side.

The ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility starts with power. At the heart of the RZR XP 4 1000 is the 107 horsepower ProStar™ Twin EFI engine that was built specifically for an extreme-performance side-by-side and first found in the RZR XP 1000. The engine features Dual OverHead Cams (DOHC), four big valves per cylinder and dual throttle bodies for immediate response making the RZR XP 4 1000 the fastest accelerating four-seater on the market. The engine also provides unmatched torque across the RPM range for ample power to carry four people under any riding conditions.

In order to handle the massive power of the engine and keep the ride smooth, the RZR XP 4 1000 features the most advanced suspension for performance driving and family cruising. The RZR XP 4 1000 has industry-exclusive Walker Evans Position Sensitive Anti-Bottoming Needle Shocks on all four corners with stronger rear shocks and retuned valving at all four corners to ensure a smooth ride for front and rear passengers. To perfectly match the ride to the terrain and number of passenger, the shocks have piggyback reservoirs up front and remote reservoirs in the rear that are 16-position compression adjustable with preload adjustability. They are paired on all four corners with dual rate/dual spring coil-overs for 18 in/45.7 cm of rear travel and 16 in/40.6 cm of front travel, and industry-exclusive 29 in/73.7 cm Maxxis Bighorn tires which provide more air volume for a smoother ride and fewer pinch flats. With a longer wheelbase and 13.5 in/34.3 cm ground clearance, the RZR XP 4 1000 provides the most control and smoothest ride for all passengers.

For RZR sharp agility, the RZR XP 4 1000 has a new tubular chassis that reduces flex to keep the tires planted for precise cornering and an ultra-responsive feel. Paired with a lower cab frame, as compared to the RZR 4 900, and a flat second row of seating, which pushes the center of gravity low into the chassis, the RZR XP 4 1000 provides an incredibly nimble and responsive feel. For a more confidence-inspired ride, the vehicle is equipped with a new, high performance All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system that seamlessly engages both front wheels with full torque to keep the front wheels pulling stronger and longer, maximizing power delivery to the ground in every condition. The RZR XP 4 1000 also comes equipped with Electronic Power Steering (EPS) to reduce steering effort and provide all-day comfort while riding.

Polaris RZR XP 4 1000Inside the cabin, the RZR XP 4 1000 features several upgrades for the most comfort and convenience of any RZR. Up front, both the driver and front passenger will appreciate the seat sliders for tool-less, on-the-fly seat adjustment and space-optimized footrests for a more secure feel. The driver will appreciate a high-performance steering wheel with 10 in/25.4 cm of tilt adjustability. To stay connected, the RZR XP 4 1000 also features sealed smartphone storage that provides visibility of the display while protecting it from the elements. The rear passengers will enjoy a roomier rear cabin due to deeper footwells with angled footrests and sculpted front seats that provide more legroom. The rear seats also are equipped with cup holders and a 12-volt outlet for added convenience. All passengers will appreciate the newly-designed seats that offer substantially improved bolstering and more

hip cushioning for a more secure feel, and a new film technology under the cover for a drier ride in wet conditions. Both the front and rear row have the slick blue LED floor lighting and floor cleanouts.

RZR XP 4 1000 features larger openings and a lower step-in height, for both front and rear passengers, for easier ingress and egress. The factory-installed quarter doors were designed for more elbow room and are equipped with a high-strength, easy-access latch for one hand operation and automotive-quality latching.
