One Step Forward...Two Steps back

Picture this. Ugly army- green painted stairs covered with frayed carpet.

This is the year to rip it out.

I spent several hours on Friday, busting my butt, pulling out nails and inhaling nasty carpet dust, filled with who-knows-what. I was feeling like I got something really accomplished and that this time my lower back hurt for a good reason.

Then I went outside to plant a few seeds in some pots in the greenhouse. I found bits of plastic in the garden and had a sinking feeling that my greenhouse had a war with the wind and lost, big time.

We (do you like how I used that term here?) will have to cover it with some kind of herculean plastic now.

I have grown very little in this greenhouse. It is mostly a storage shed for garden junk. But I am not ready to kiss is goodbye yet.

Rabbits, butterflies, sparrows and assorted wildlife sometimes get trapped in here in during the summer. I feel bad when I find crunchy dead bumblebees dried out in the corners.

I usually have some sort of trellis or lattice work wired up so I can grow sweet peas or something up the side.

One spring day when I was cleaning out the greenhouse, I found a black widow spider lurking in the corner. ( I miss Chris Farley!) I killed it but I had goosebumps for the rest of the day and night thinking about that nasty spider laying eggs. Maybe that is why I neglect to clean it, for fear of finding more of those spiders.

We don't heat this greenhouse, it would be devastatingly expensive so I just grow spinach and a few other things out here. I have had some neighbors ask me what I grow in there. They probably think it's for pot. Fat chance of anything so exotic growing in this greenhouse!

I do have grow lights in the basement that I start most of the seedlings for my garden. And that brings me back to the happy topic that my lupines germinated! Scarifying really does work. I did a test of two flats, one scarified, the other flat I just planted a few to see what would happen. Nothing. The scarified seeds germinated so quickly. Now I just have to keep them alive.

I must go fill all those nail holes in the stairs, so then I can paint them and finally put some stair treads on them. I will try not to think about what else is breaking outside while I try to get things done inside.

I just had to add this video. It scares me. A lot.

Put A Bird On It AGAIN

This is my favorite video this week from YouTube. I think I have gone through this "Put a Bird on it" phase. I still love birds, even if they are poking fun at the crafty aspect that putting a bird on anything makes it suddenly fabulous. If you want to see more...check out Portlandia on Netflix.

I keep seeing creative art all over Pinterest with birds on stuff . It really can get out of hand but since I love birds in an obsessive way, that's okay with me.

I need to get a suit like Tippi's. She looks so classy trying to escape those birds.

And maybe I can also put a bird on the suit for extra stylishness.

I was looking back at all the headers I have made in the past for my blogs and I find that birds are predominantly featured. And most of the clip art I save has the same.

There is no getting around it....I will always love birds on things. We used to have two parakeets and I miss them sometimes. They both died a few years ago. I loved getting Freddy out of his cage and letting him sit on my finger. His toes were always warm. Sugar, though, she was kind of snippy. She looks a little evil in this photo. Besides the feathers, birdseed and poop, I didn't mind cleaning up after them.

I don't believe in having birds in cages inside the house anymore. I would rather see them in nature, and feed them when I can. I like to grow plants that they like...sunflowers in particular.

And I loved visiting the Bird sanctuary in Walden, Colorado.

In only four months, the humming birds will be back in the mountains.

But who is counting?

Beans, Beans...The Magical Fruit

Maybe I am the last person to do this, but I really wanted to make my own vanilla extract at home. So I bought vanilla beans online a while back and finally got some vodka the other day to finish this off. ( and that is an entire other story.) It took me about five minutes to chop the beans and scrape the seeds out into the jar. Then I just poured the vodka in. And in just a few months, it will be bona fide vanilla extract, at way less than buying at the store. I just have to remember to shake it every so often. It looks disgusting right now but I will take a photo when it is coming along.

We went to a local Asian market and look how they spell Brussell sprouts. So cute.
I ended up roasting them in the oven with olive oil and little salt and pepper, which is my favorite way to eat them.

This is long gone but my daughter helped me make this coconut cream pie.
You can sure make some heavenly things with coconut milk.

I know for certain that I am not the only person pouring over the garden and seed catalogs. Have you sent in your order yet? And how did I get on so many mailing lists!?!

Ten on the Tenth of January

For my January ten on the tenth post, I wanted to look back at some of the highlights of the summer of 2011. If you have seen these photos before, I apologize for the repetition. But it sure made me feel good to look at all the things that grew this past season. It is snowing again and I needed to look at something besides white and brown.

So many problems trying to put 1 through 10 on these photos. I gave up. Just trust me. There are ten.

White Colorado Christmas

Yes. that is my fence nearly covered in snow!

Nearly three feet of snow fell on the first day of winter here in Colorado. It won't be melting very fast so I think it's safe to say we will have a White Christmas!

It's been weeks since I announced this ornament drawing on my blog and if you are as busy as me, you probably forgot about this drawing. Yesterday I was filling up the birdseed bucket with birdseed and when I went to close it, I smacked it a bit too hard with my hand. Numbness in my thumb was quick to follow and also it started to turn purple. The things I do for those birds! ( My husband asked if I was going "fast" when this happened. I said I was going my "normal" speed. That is fast to him.)
Anyway, I am glad I got that birdseed yesterday because we are getting a lot of snow today. I firmly believe there should have been a snow day today for my kids. I was sliding all over the place on the way to the bus stop, mostly because they hadn't plowed the road yet. All the way home I drove VERY SLOWLY after almost getting stuck several times. ( and I have a Subaru which is supposed to do pretty good in the snow.)

Just got this e-mail from our local yahoo group:

Hi Neighbors.

My husband Steve drove down M----------- at 7am this morning...he just called me and said that the road is VERY slippery, and that there were quite a few cars off the road. He clipped the guardrail twice (and he has studded snows and 4wd). Anyway, he said that it's especially bad this morning--hope not too many of you have to head to town.

Yikes.

Soon I will head out into that white wonderful and fill up the feeders, and also put out some suet. Since I ran out of birdseed last week and didn't fill up the feeders, I have been throwing out all sorts of interesting tidbits and treats to the birds. They liked my daughter's oatmeal quite a lot.

I have special treat for you, that does not consist of millet or sunflower seeds though. I am going to to have a drawing for these cute garden seed ornaments.
( No, I did not make them myself. If only.)

Garlic Breath 101

Simple Idea:
Somewhere I read that you can plant garlic cloves from the store in a pot and use the greens for topping soups etc. I used them recently on layered taco dip... Vampires beware. Just trim the tops and they keep growing. A great indoor project for wintertime.

Maybe you could also toss some in a salad?

My son gave me a hug yesterday after I had been cooking potato and leek soup. He said I smelled like leeks. There is no greater compliment.

Just a warning about those cute little templates for blogs. Sometimes you can't get rid of them! I had a blog template installed on my family blog from Hotbliggityblog and when I tried to change it to a new one, it kept showing the old template along with the new one.Yet when I looked at the widgets in the design page, the old one was not showing up at all. I am not very adept at HTML so I am going to be more wary of them from now on. I should have left it alone!

Ten on the Tenth of November

You can always tell when the gardening season has wrapped up for me here in Colorado; I start up the ten on the 10th again. We have already been blessed with 17 inches of snow and it is still technically fall here.
I am going with the theme of Thankful since Thanksgiving is just around the corner. If you want to join in with your own ten on the tenth post, just let me know in a comment and I will come take a look at your blog.

1. I am thankful for mint tea. My daughter Shanny taught me how delicious it can be with milk or half and half. I find myself guzzling the stuff. And not to be biased or anything, Celestial Seasonings is the best for mint tea. ( I am not getting paid or anything to say that, either.)

2. You knew I could not NOT mention Pinterest. This is a treasure trove of great ideas. I have found great decorating ideas, fantastic new cooking blogs and even fashion inspiration, since I have no clue as to how to wear a scarf in non-nerdy way. Yes, it can be a huge time suck but so is Facebook and what does that site ever inspire me to do besides "like" every friend's status, whether I do or not.

3. I am so thankful for the birds that visit my garden. The Clark's Nutcrackers have been very active this Fall. My favorite trip this year was to to the National Wildlife Refuge in Walden, CO, where we were able to see numerous quantities of ducks.

4.
They don't look this new anymore, but I love my trail shoes. Super comfy and great for running the trails.

5.
Yes, I know I have mentioned this show in the past, but it is still one of my favorite shows.
Fringe is truly awesome. I always fall asleep and have to re-watch, just to keep up with the complexity.

6. Cooks Illustrated

I can't say enough good things about this magazine and the new cookbooks they have out now. I have learned so many things to help me be a better cook and baker. I have come such a long way since those days of canned Spam when my husband and were newlyweds. were All I knew how to make then were biscuits, waffles and cookies. I thought making a cake entailed buying a cake mix.

7. Marketa Iglova's new album Anar is amazing. I loved when she was in Once and I love that she has grown so much as a musician and performer.

8. It seems like owls keep getting more and more popular. I see them everywhere, meaning, in stores etc. I loved owls even before they made their grand appearance in Harry Potter. I love hearing them at night in the forests surrounding our home.

9. Ikea Chocolate
Again, I am not getting paid to say this but have you had this chocolate? It is so good and actually a really great price. I am glad my husband works only minutes from Ikea, just in case we run out. Such a fun store, really. I am itching to go back.

10. I am so thankful for my husband and children. They give my life purpose and I can't imagine life without them.

We have had our first snow and yet I still harvest the chard and kale. I have been a slacker in the garden but I have really been enjoying the fall hikes. The forest service is talking about some changes around our neighborhood which will affect everyone who lives in this mountain area. I am not excited about the prescribed burns or the removal of potential beetle kill tress. Yes, something has to be done but can the forest service manage their plan wisely and without unnecessary property damage? Just some nagging thoughts.

National Wildlife Refuge, Walden Colorado

Last weekend, my husband and I took a little visit to Walden, Colorado. What's in Walden? Well, the National Wildlife Refuge with it's vast quantities of ducks and wildlife. The sign for the town states the Walden is Colorad's moose viewing Captital. And they are right, because we saw two bulls and of course it was when my camera was back in the hotel while we were getting breakfast .

If you like to fish, this is the place for you. Too bad I don't. But I love the clear streams and quiet places found on the way to Walden.

Some fall colors on the rocks.

These pelicans were so far away but I managed to get a picture of them feeding. They are very large birds! In the springtime, many birds have nests here and 1000's of nestling and fledglings call this place home for a short time.

Just another bit of the wildlife. Just kidding, that is my husband.

Maybe a hawk or a kite?

The fall colors were just starting to peak. Many pine trees lost to pine beetles in this part of Colorado. It is only about 50 miles South of Wyoming.

You can look at this sign two ways.

We were fascinated by this craggy rock spanning half a mile up the mountain. Their were spider webs all over it, so I kept my distance.

Antelope.

More ducks. We went on the automobile tour as well as the riverwalk. We saw some beaver dams but no beavers.

Walden,Colorado is a great place to visit if you like low-key activities like bird watching and easy hikes. Or if you like fishing, hunting or snowmobiling. Apparently they get plenty of snow in the winter. A lady in town said they had snow until June! I didn't even bother to look at the real estate. Some kids were giving away kittens and it took all of my willpower to not bring all those cute cats home. No picture for that, sorry. It was good to take little time to be with my husband and also get out into nature.

Pickled Beets

The beets from the garden this year were plentiful and I am trying to think of new ways to use them. I have tried baked beets and beet chips but I really wanted something different. So in one of my vegan cookbooks, I found a recipe for pickled beets. I used honey instead of agave and they turned out very delicious. The variety is one that does not "bleed" all over the place and very pleasant to work with. I didn't have red hands and a red cutting board after the process. I only made a few to start with, just in case it was a flop. Next time I will make more!

First peel the beets,( 2 medium sized) slice them in half, and cute each half into 1/4 " slices. Boil in 1 cup of water over high heat for five minutes, covered or until slightly tender. Strain and return to the same pot.

After boiling they will lose some of their color. Mine turned salmon colored.

Whisk together 1/4 cup raw apple cider vinegar, 1 T honey, and 1 T good quality olive oil, and 1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar. Add this to the beets and simmer another 5 minutes. Cool before refrigerating in an airtight container.

A very simple recipe and a good way to use beets.

Pleasant Surprises

You know when you find out something great and you just can't contain yourself? I was grinning like a kid when I discovered some surprises outside recently. This humongous zuke was hiding out in my squash patch and here I thought I had just picked the last ones because of early frost! I am debating what to make with it? Zucchini bread, squash tian, breaded, or sauteed? A happy thing to be perplexed about, to be sure.

This plant, a mystery still to me, has been growing in my garden for many years, and this year it finally bloomed.

I made a funny looking pie with some of the apples I scrounged off a tree along the road. I don't think I have made an apple pie in years. Usually we do cherry pies at our place because it's so easy to open a can. Lazy, but true!

The apples I picked were tart and juicy and only one had a worm hole.

The humble little marigold has found a place in my heart but not my dining room table because people don't like the way they smell.

I got the hall way and entrance way painted while my internet was out. If that happened more often, I might even get more accomplished! My oldest daughter helped me choose this color and helped me move stuff as well.

And the last surprise was this little yellow bird flitting around the wild sunflowers in my yard. It seems that even though I despise the sunflowers because of their pollen, they attract all kinds of wildlife. The chipmunks like the hang onto them and eat the seeds. Anybody know the ID of this bird?

Have you had any pleasant surprises lately? Another surprise not found by me but my son was a bear in the back yard. And my lucky neighbor saw a mother bobcat with her baby right by her house!

And last but not least, a surprising and funny video from Youtube.. My kids told me about these guys who make videos on Youtube and I can't stop watching them. I truly do laugh out loud at these and can't stop quoting them in my everyday life....

I have been without internet at my house for about a week....and now I am at the library amongst strangers typing this post. Fall is arriving quick and the aspens are already changing in the high country. Without the internet, I have been getting so much done. I got the hallway and entranceway painted in my house, much cleaning accomplished, many hikes taken and a few pounds lost. My garden is still blooming but I have a feeling that will end in a week or so. The cosmos really filled out and the bachelor buttons are flopping over they are so tall! I am sorry if I haven't been able to comment on your blogs, I miss reading them! Well, I just wanted do a quick post, to let you know I have not QUIT this blog; and will return when things work at home.

Labor Day Hike From Moffat Tunnel to Crater Lakes

For Labor Day my family and I went on a hike from the Moffat Tunnel near Rollinsville to Crater lakes. It was beautiful weather and there weren't many mosquitoes so it was nice. The strangest thing of all was running into Rachel's old college roommate up at the lake.

I loved all the Soloman's Seal, Ferns, Moss, Fireweed, Asters, Aspens, and wild raspberries.

The wildflowers are still blooming in September at 10,000 feet!

I love Colorado in every season. We are so blessed to live near such breath-taking scenery! Since people have been asking, the hike was six miles total.

I am so happy because I found out I can make breaded zucchini with olive oil instead of butter and it is equally tasty!

Breaded Zucchini: ( an adapted family recipe.)
2 zucchini, cut in 1/4'' slices
Saltine crumbs
2 Beaten eggs
olive oil

Dip the sliced zucchini in the egg. Dip in crushed saltines. Put on pan that is coated with olive oil. Drizzle more olive oil over the top. Salt and pepper to taste. Bake 40 minutes at 400 degrees. These melt in your mouth and I love them with lemon.

My sweet Mom shipped me apricots from the delicious apricot tree in their yard. We will be gorging on these all weekend and swatting away the fruit flies that have over-run the house.

Vitamin N

I am reading this book and I highly recommend it. It justifies all the time I spent outside. If you have little kids, or grandkids it is never too late to get them outside and learning and appreciating this beautiful earth we are blessed to live on. Buy it or check it out at the library.( like me, the cheapskate.)It is also a good gift for new parents.

I love how Richard Louv uses the term Vitamin N. ( For nature, of course. ) He also wrote the book Last Child in the Woods.

Some of the nature I am enjoying in the garden this week:

Summer squash hybrid, Early Bulam. I ordered the seeds from Kitazawa Seed Co. They say it will taste better than zucchini. We'll see.

Mexican sunflower. Usually orange is not my color but this one has finally bloomed and I like it a lot.

Echinops have a lot of blooms this year.

Just a regular old zucchini that has an endomorph body size. I can relate to that.

My Marigolds that are just starting to bloom. I started these as seeds in the garden. I got the seeds from CU gardens a few years ago and they remind me of my daughter taking SAT tests. While she took the test, I waited outside and "helped" with the landscaping.

I finally found a plant that is happy in the tree stump. Hens and Chicks are usually left alone by wild animals but sometimes the deer come take nibbles.

This picture is for my Dad to show that the Heuchera he gave me is growing and also the Jacob's ladder in a nice shady spot. Thanks for the plants, I hope they thrive! I planted them under a tree and I sometimes forget to water them but they are alive despite my neglect.

I hope you are getting plenty of Vitamin N in your life. If you are a gardener, it just happens naturally.

Anybody Know This Plant???

These mystery plants grew really big in my garden. I am suspecting a thistle of some sort as they are prickly as heck. I got impatient yesterday and pulled all of them out. If you know what it is, can you help me out? It is not in my Colorado wildflowers book so I have no idea whatsoever.

Just resting.

Daylily and the name is forgotten already.

Starting to look up recipes to use these yellow squash up. I ended up with 10 yellow squash plants and only about 2 zucchinis. The zukes are very tiny still. Just a few more weeks of warm weather.

HARVEST Rundown:
I harvested only three garlic bulbs this year. I would say that's a crappy harvest. I think I spent 10 dollars for one bucks' worth of garlic. I will have to re-think where I plant it next time and make sure to water it throughout the winter if it doesn't snow enough.

The basil is just coming on and I am drying some and going to make pesto as well. It doesn't transplant well for me. Better to seed directly and protect at night if I want bigger plants.

The onions are above and beyond, I guess I just lucked out with those. I started them from sets.I will be harvesting those very soon. I have been picking many out and munching the thinnings. I can't believe I didn't like onions as a kid. Now I LOVE them!
Potatoes, the biggest I have ever had. Yukon golds are pretty tasty and reliable. I could eat those everyday.
Green beans, not so good. Only about 5 beans plants growing and they look bad.
Peas, never - ending and more just keep coming. Everyone is actually getting sick of them so I am going to freeze some pods for winter stir-fry. They aren't as good but it's better than what you buy at the store during winter.
Kale...yum yum yum. Lots of aphids. But easy to spray off and also get off in the sink. So I eat that by myself.
Turnip gratin....everyone ate that the other night. So good with swiss cheese!
Swiss chard: Lots and lots. Maybe too much?
Beets: Pulling them out soon as well. A few more cold nights to sweeten them up.

Carrots, miniscule, I never try hard enough for carrots.
