DuPage Medical Group’s Asthma & Allergy Hosted Peanut-Free Day at Kane County Cougars

July 16 was Peanut-Free Day at the Kane County Cougar game. This day was in recognition of those who have allergies and sensitivities to peanuts. Peanut Allergy is the most prevalent food allergy in the United States. It affects the immune system in which the body suffers from a range of symptoms after exposure to some of the proteins in peanuts. Some reactions are mild for instance: hives or itching, but any reaction may progress to a life threatening emergency at any time. Peanut allergy is distinct and different from tree nut allergy. A peanut is a member of the legume family whereas tree nuts are a member of their own family. While the symptoms and signs may be the same, a person with a peanut allergy might not have a tree nut allergy.

Hundreds of patients were eager to hear about the new advances in the treatment of allergies. Current peanut allergy patients were reinstructed on the use of their Epi-pens and given pouches to carry them in. Informational handouts were given as well.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk a Success with DMG’s Pretty in Pink Ladies

Congratulations to DMG’s Pretty in Pink Ladies team for raising over $16,000 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Taking place over two days and encompassing over 39 miles in the Chicago land area, the six lady team from our Plastic Surgery and Institute of Aesthetic Surgery departments walked and discovered a camaraderie not only amongst their teammates, but with other walkers along the way. The team members care for breast cancer surviving patients on a daily basis which compelled them to do something to help find a cure. The majority of net proceeds raised through this Avon Walk for Breast Cancer are granted to breast cancer programs in the Chicago land area. Initially, the team’s goal was $10,800. However, through their fund raising efforts, they found that they surpassed that goal and realized it was more than just walking – it was a true commitment to the breast cancer cause.

The Pretty in Pink Ladies team included Bernadette Ulleweit, Megan Brown, Nicole Hatchell, Tina Karl, Donna Stringfield, and Elizabeth Weiler.

Terry Donat, MD recently served his second year as an Invited Guest Oral Board Examiner for both 2008 American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) Primary Certification and Maintenance of Certification(MOC) Oral Examinations. Dr. Donat has also served for the past three years as one of the six ABFPRS Written Examination Reviewers charged with determining each year’s specific written Board examination contents and protocols. The annual two-day Written and Oral Examinations for candidates from the United States and Canada pursuing certification by the ABFPRS was given on June 19-20th in Washington, DC.

Furthermore, 2008 marks the 20th year for the ABFPRS offering its primary subspecialty certification exams and the second year for the ABFPRS offering its Maintenance of Certification examination required each decade for recertification of its current and future Diplomates. A Summer Pastime - Learning How to Ride a Bike

The thought of taking the training wheels off can be frightening for kids and parents. Every young child has experienced getting that shiny new bike on their birthday and wanting to ride it so bad, but not knowing how yet. Accidents happen; kids fall off and get bumps and bruises, but they keep pushing forward. In a recent article in the Suburban Life Publications , Dr. Eve Wyrwa, Pediatrician of DuPage Medical Group, gave her professional opinion about bike safety. She says helmets are a way of life, “it has to be a family rule that you enforce from day one. A lot of times, parents say ‘Oh, little Johnny is just riding around in the driveway, so it’s not a big deal,’ but it has to be all the time. Buy a helmet before buying a bike, and let them pick it out because you’ll have a much better compliance rate if there’s a little Barbie pattern beckoning.” By wearing a helmet, you are preventing the possibility of further injury, rather than just bumps and bruises.

Pediatric doctors see many orthopedic injuries from bike accidents. It is important to know what bike is right, “You don’t want a bike that is uncomfortable or unmanageable for short arms and legs,” Wyrwa says. “And kids should be using the regular breaks rather than the hand ones when first driving because they haven’t yet acquired the strength and coordination.” Buying a bike is like buying a pair of shoes; while it may be expensive to buy several bikes for your child over the years, it is necessary for the child to have a bike that fits right.

Beginning this step up in your child’s life is exciting, but it needs to be done correctly. Keep safety in mind, but have fun and use encouraging thoughts with your child. These safety tips will be helpful for families in the local area who are enjoying the beginnings of the beautiful summer weather.

Summer Brings Stinging Insects

In spite of our best efforts, encounters with stinging insects are relatively commonplace during the warmer months. For a select number of individuals with stinging insect allergy, stings may pose a life-threatening risk. Allergic reactions to insect stings develop rapidly and can affect any organ system. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction which may result in hives, swelling of the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency and can be fatal. If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms after an insect sting, obtain emergency medical treatment immediately.

After the acute symptoms are treated, an allergist can help identify the responsible insect and offer treatment. Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) against stinging insects is over 97% effective in preventing severe reactions from future stings. Children’s Book Author is DuPage Medical Group’s Dr. Annie Huang

“My First Music Book – Notes and the Keyboard” is the first in a series of books designed to introduce young children to basic music concepts. Dr. Annie Huang wrote the book after her first son was born. She discovered that there were books on learning numbers, letters, colors, and such but nothing that would help children learn to read music.

Reading music is not unusual for Dr. Huang who began playing piano at the age of five. She studied under Emilio del Rosario at the Music Center for the North Shore in Winnetka, Illinois. Her undergraduate concentration was in Piano Performance while she was busy in the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical School.

DuPage Medical Group is proud to have Dr. Huang as a pediatrician at our Glen Ellyn Pediatrics site. Her second book will be out soon.

Dr. Julio Gonzalez Attends the U.S. Women’s Triathlon Series, Presented in Naperville this Weekend and Sponsored by DuPage Medical Group

Whether you are a biker, swimmer, runner or just a cheerleader, come support the racers and those who have fought a battle with Ovarian Cancer. DuPage Medical Group is a proud sponsor of the U.S. Women’s Triathlon Series presented in Naperville, IL. Our very own Dr. Julio Gonzalez will be attending this event, as well as presenting a speech Saturday, June 21st at Naperville Central High School located 441 W. Aurora Avenue in Naperville. You may also register in person on Saturday to participate in this event. Race day registration will not be available. Naperville Central is the site of registration as well as the Multisport Experience which is FREE and open to the public. There will be clinics on training and nutrition, product demonstrations and discounts on workout gear.

The Triathlon Competition will be held the following day, Sunday, June 22nd and consists of a Swim in the Centennial Beach Reservoir; Bike the 2 loop course that takes place on roadways throughout all of Naperville; and finish off with a Run past Naperville Central High School and through the Riverwalk path to the finish line. Each stride, stroke or lap is a step toward finding a cure. Donations will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Inc., so come on down and cheer on a friend or loved one, and enjoy the post-race festivities, as well as sample products from the sponsors. Celebrate the devotion to the ultimate conquest of Ovarian Cancer.
