Why I orgasmed in an MRI scanner | Thump

Duri News - Let me just get this out of the way upfront: I had an orgasm in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner.

That is, as background research for my book, “Dirty Minds: How our brains influence love, sex and relationships,” I participated in a study at Rutgers University where scientists measured the activity in my brain as I self-stimulated to an orgasm.

I wasn’t the first woman to participate in one of these studies – and I won’t be the last.

I know, it’s controversial and perhaps even a bit shocking. And, because of that, I expected readers and commenters to make a few jokes at my expense (and perhaps even question my character) when I wrote about the experience.

But what I didn’t expect was so much outrage about sex research in general.

Time and time again, regardless of the publication discussing my fMRI orgasm, commenters wrote things like, “If only researchers were as interested in finding a cure for cancer,” and “I can’t believe my tax dollars are going to pay for such useless research.”

How can the study of human sexuality be considered useless? This is something that is prevalent in each and every one of our lives. When we’re not having sex, we’re talking about it. When we’re not talking about it, we’re thinking about it. And when we’re not thinking about it, we worry that something is wrong with us.

Sex is a primary source of human motivation and can change the way we act and the way we feel in quite dramatic ways. And this isn’t something that occurs solely in the privacy of our bedrooms: You see sex at play in advertising and marketing, in problems in the work place, in self-esteem and identity, in pleasure and reward, and also in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

Human sexuality has direct influence over so many aspects of day-to-day life. Understanding such a universal phenomenon is never useless. Yet, many want to discount its importance – and its study.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Alfred Kinsey, esteemed biologist and founder of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, pioneered the study of sexual behavior with the publication of the Kinsey Reports. That work was the first of its kind: a systematic, scientific approach to understanding variation in normal sexual behavior. And, thankfully, his work has inspired countless brave scientists in the decades since to buck the status quo and study human sexuality.

Yet, while we’ve come a long way in our understanding the biology of sex, there is still plenty left to discover. We now have a good deal of data on the mechanics of sexual behavior.

But as anyone who has ever been involved in a sexual relationship knows, there’s a lot more to sex than pure mechanics – a heck of a lot more. The blossoming field of neuroscience, including neuro-imaging studies like the orgasm one I participated in as well as cellular and molecular research, is now offering us a new window of understanding into age-old questions about sex and related behaviors by focusing on all the ways our brains influence our behaviors.

During the course of my research for “Dirty Minds,” I asked neuroscientific researchers about the greatest challenges involved in studying human sexuality. I expected to hear concerns about finding study participants willing to be honest about their sex lives or if what was learned in the laboratory could really be applied to real-world behaviors.

But unanimously, the scientists I talked to said their greatest challenge was finding research grants and financial support for their work. Because so many of us are peevish about the study of sex, funding agencies can be, too. But none of us should be. Human sexuality is important – and its study is something we should all get behind. Because we can’t begin to have discussions about how to best deal with problems concerning sexual behavior, sexual function and sexual intimacy until we have a better handle on what’s normal.

Time and time again, I’m asked how I managed to have an orgasm in an fMRI scanner. But that’s not the right question. The important question is why I had an orgasm in an fMRI scanner. And that’s to help further our understanding of orgasm and human sexuality. When I say I came for the science – I mean it. And it’s my hope that more people will do the same in the future.

Dennis Quaid’s third wife, Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, filed for divorce

Duri News - After nearly eight years of marriage, Kimberly Buffington-Quaid filed for divorce to husband Dennis Quaid. She is also asking for spousal support and attorney's fees.

"The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities... that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation," according to the documents filed by Kimberly.

The couple had an agreement for a temporary custody, giving each other time with their kids. While Kimberly has custody of their main home.

"We can confirm that Kimberly Quaid has filed for divorce," a rep for the actor told the site. "Contrary to what has been reported, a satisfactory settlement is being worked out for both parties."

Quaid-Buffington and their twins just move in to texas last year saying, "L.A. has been good to us, but at this point in my life I'm ready to try something new."

Dennis and Kimberly married in 2004. Quaid, who was previously married to actress Meg Ryan and split in 2001 after 10 years. He also married his first wife P.J. Soles, divorcing in 1983.

Georgia football coach Mark Richt gets a new five year contract

Duri News - News sources Rivals.com, Associated Press and Yahoo Sports. Athens Georgia. University of Georgia (UGA) football coach Mark Richt has agreed to a new five year contract that will keep him at UGA for five more years through the 2016 college football season.

UGA athletic director Greg McCarthy said the final details of the contract are being reviewed by their lawyers.

Richt has coached at UGA for 11 years. His annual salary is $2.81 million dollars. McCarthy said the details on the contract will be made public when the document is ready.

Richt said he hopes he can end his coaching career at Georgia. In the 2011 college football season the Bulldogs went 10-4 and represented the Southeastern Conference (SEC) East division championship game that they lost to Louisiana State University (LSU).

Retail Mobile Sites Still Win Over Retail Apps STUDY

Duri News - Big online retailers are still reaching far more users with their mobile websites than their mobile apps, Nielsen’s latest report shows.

The report was conducted on 5,000 U.S. smartphone users who participated in the research.

It shows that the combined reach for five big online retailers – Amazon, eBay, Target, Best Buy and Walmart – was around 50% of users for their mobile website, and around 25% of users for their mobile app in the period from October 2011 till January 2012. The combined reach averaged 52% to 59%.

The Internet Remembers the Japan Quake, Tsunami Anniversary

Duri News - March 11 was the anniversary of Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami, and citizens worldwide commemorated the event. Not only did news outlets release countless stories assessing Japan’s situation one year later, but people all over the world also shared their thoughts and photos online — including politicians, journalists, celebrities and ordinary citizens.

Social media documented the enormity of the event as it unfolded. In the days prior to the one year anniversary, crowd-sourced projects and other online features showcasing the situation in Japan also emerged.

Duri News - March 11, 2012: Anyone who watches Game Of Thrones is used to seeing a lot of Emilia Clarke. For those of us who don't, GQ Magazine will bless our eyes with young Miss Clarke.

Emilia Clarke is an British actress. She was born in 1987 in London, United Kingdom and grew up in Berkshire. Her interest in acting began at the age of three after seeing the musical Show Boat which her father was working on at the time. She attended Oxford's St Edward's and Rye St Antony before studying at Drama Centre London where she graduated in 2009.

Clarke is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Her early work includes two plays at St. Edwards, ten plays at Drama Centre London, the 2009 Company of Angels production of Sense and a 2009 commercial for Samaritans. Clarke's first television roles were Saskia Mayer in a 2009 episode of Doctors and Savannah in SyFy's 2010 movie Triassic Attack. Though, her big break came when she in the HBO medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones which is based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

Clarke was cast as a replacement to fellow British actress Tamzin Merchant who dropped out of the pilot for undisclosed reasons. Game of Thrones debuted in April 2011 to rave to positive reviews, depending on which critic one follows. It was quickly picked up, due to the show's popularity, for a second season. Clarke took the 2011 EWwy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as Daenerys.

Duri News - He used to be The King of his court while with the Cleveland Cavaliers, with full autonomy and a $110 million net worth to match. But these days, he’s in more of a Democracy, sharing the spotlight with the other 2 parts of The Dream Team while still enjoying even more of ‘the crown jewels.’

LeBron James went to the Miami Heat amid intense emotional fallout. His former fans were furious, burning his jersey in a frenzy of jilted love and owner of the Cavaliers even cast a curse on the NBA star. Looked like it worked for the overly hyped, breathlessly anticipated win from the power-house ‘merger’ wasn’t delivered. LeBron, Wade, Bosh and the Heats didn’t get their coveted season win rings.

Before joining the Miami Heat in 2010, The 27 year old basketball star played for the Cavaliers. Drafted in 2003 right out of high school, the then teenager signed a staggering $90 million contract with Nike before he even threw a ball for the team. But frustration over never snagging a championship ring pushed him to jump ship which caused a firestorm in the national basketball arena. Everyone had an opinion and LeBron was dark villain or hero depending on who you talked to.

Fans were highly upset and many forgot LeBron was a ‘virgin’ in the drafting world—where he had so far given it all only to Cleveland. But folks didn’t care about that little detail when hurling strong words like disloyal and ungrateful. Fans simply wanted their star player to stay.

I don’t blame them for the Ohio native has amassed a list of accomplishments in his 9 years playing pro. Some include 2004 Rookie of the Year; MVP for The Allstar Games 2006, 2008; 2009, 2010 MVP and 2008 Scoring Champion. Plus his lucrative endorsements and contracts have catapulted him to the top of the bankable pile, raking in over $40 million a year according to Forbes. I Guess he is trying to play catch-up with the former King of the court Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan.

He has a ways to go for MJ, the King of all endorsements, is currently worth about $500 million, even after ex-wife Juanita walked away with $168 million in the divorce.

LeBron isn't married and is thinking ahead for rumor has it he had his girlfriend Savannah Brinson sign an agreement where she would receive a couple million dollars if they ever separated in exchange for her silence. In other words--no talking to the press about their relation or airing their dirty laundry in public. Smart move. But now that they are engaged, the rules might change, who knows.

Duri News - Pinterest’s traffic and engagement are spiking, and marketers want a piece of the action.

After launching branded profiles, many businesses are now developing promotions on the platform, encouraging users to follow the profiles of individual brands and pin items from their websites.

Most recently, British Midland International (bmi) launched a “Pinterest Lottery.” The airline has posted a series of boards on its Pinterest page, featuring numbered and logo-clad photos from five destinations: Beirut, Dublin, Marrakech, Moscow and Nice. Users are asked to repin up to six images. At the end of each week, the company will choose a number at random; the users who had repinned the image with that number will be qualified for a chance to win a pair of free return flights to any bmi destination.

In December, Lands’ End Canvas launched a promotion called “Lands’ End Canvas Pin It to Win It.” Fans of the apparel brand were asked to pin items from landsendcanvas.com to designated Lands’ End Canvas pinboards for a chance to win one of those items.

Duri News - In a press conference in San Francisco ,Apple CEO Tim Cook opened a new presentation without any surprises, he today introduced the new version of iPhone sales expected to reach 60 million units when it goes on sale March 16.

The giant Apple introduced after months of anticipation third version of its popular iPad3 tablet equipped with a higher image quality, thanks to more pixels and higher resolution than previous versions.

The new iPad3 - 635 grams instead of 589 for the iPad 2 and 9.4 mm thick instead of 8.8 mm - has a more powerful processor (A5X) and a graphics chip quad-core with an HD Retina screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels (1920x1080 cons of the two) . Strike looms at Canada's largest airline Air Canada

Duri News - As early as next Monday over 8,000 unionized workers representing mechanics, cargo agents, and baggage handlers could go on strike. The Federal Government says that a strike would not be in the best interests of Canadians.

The federal Labour Minister Lisa Platt said:"The government is concerned that a strike is possible and is taking this situation very seriously,"? In 2003 and 2004 the union gave many concessions to save Air Canada from bankruptcy. It is now trying to recoup some of the union losses.

However, Air Canada is again suffering losses while its main competitor Westjet is doing better. Air Canada has lost 249 million for the year. The Conservative government legislated postal workers back to work last summer. Some speculate that the government could also force Air Canada workers back to work so that travel is not disrupted during the March break. So far however the labour minister has simply urged the two parties to reach an agreement. For more see this article.

How is Demi Moore doing after rehab

Duri News - Demi Moore is recovering and already looking forward to working again as mentioned by some close sources. Moore had been lying low since she got admitted to the rehab. Nothing had been heard of her up till now.

Recently, Rumer Willis, Demi Moore's daughter, was spotted at the red carpet at the Miami International Film Festival and even though she was quite open about other things, she was hushed-up about how Demi Moore was doing post-rehab.

Willis blatantly ignored a question by a reporter when he asked about the health of her mother. When the question was posed to her, Rumer Willis simply turned away, indicating that she did not want to answer that question.

Demi Moore had a serious health crisis when in January she had seizures and had to be taken to hospital. Moore had not only been experimenting with drugs, but she was also getting thinner with every passing day.

Even Ashton Kutcher has been keeping quiet about his ex-wife since her admittance to the rehab, but according to some sources, he has been visiting her from time to time.

"He came to her house to see her for about an hour and a half," a source told reporters. According to the same source, Ashton Kutcher was accompanied by three male companions on that day.

When asked why Ashton Kutcher had gone to visit Demi Moore, he said that he did it because "he knew it was important to her daughters," referring to Rumer, 23, Scout, 20, and Tallulah, 18. However, some people maintain that the three daughters are not concerned about Ashton Kutcher anymore, whom they once used to call as "the other dad."

A source added that there were no chances of the two getting back together, since Ashton Kutcher was having a ball of a time with his current girlfriend, Lorene Scafaria.

Hockey father faces criminal charges in Massachusetts

Duri News - News sources Associated Press and Fox Sports. Winthrop Massachusetts. Authorities in Massachusetts announced Tuesday Joesph Cordes 42, will be summoned to an East Boston District Court to face a charge of distrubing the peace.

Cordes is accused of pointing a laser pointer in the eyes of an opposing goal keeper at his daughter's hockey game last month during a high school hockey game.

Police said Cordes pointed the light at the goalkeeper of the Medway/Ashland team on February 29 during a hockey game in Winthrop. School officals removed Cordes from the arena.

Winthrop won the game 3-1. The parents of the Medway/Ashland high school wanted the game replayed due to the incident but the Massachusetts high school governing body denied the appeal.

Cordes has not been arrested. He told Boston television television station WBZ he humliated his daughter and he feels "like a complete jerk."

A former girls hockey coach at Wilmington High School said that his former goalkeeper of the team complained that she had a laser pointer in her eyes at a hockey game last year.

I know that winning is not the only thing but the only thing but trying to use cheating tactics in any sport is uncalled for.

Justin Bieber's Mom Writing a Memoir

Duri News - Justin Bieber's mom is telling her story.

Pattie Mallette, Bieber's mother has signed with Revell to write "Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom," the publishing company announced today. He is writing the foreword to the book for his mom. It will be released on Sept. 18.

In addition to writing about her famous offspring, Mallette will detail her own story of youthful abuse, trauma, and addiction that included a suicide attempt at seventeen. She will also write about how she turned her life around when she found herself single and pregnant with Justin.

Mallette hopes her story will inspire other women in similar circumstances. "I want them to see that no matter how desperate their circumstances may be, they can have hope for a better future," says Mallette. She plans to donate a portion of the book's proceeds to charity.

"Pattie's story is a powerful example of courage and determination that will inspire anyone who has faced struggles in life," added Jennifer Leep, editorial director for Revell. "She's living proof that even in the darkest of places, there is always room for hope."

Justin Bieber published his first book, "First Step 2 Forever: My Story," in October 2010, and it went on to sell more than a million copies in 25 languages. His second book, "Justin Bieber: Just Getting Started," is also scheduled for publication in September.

Today Mallette helps manage her son's career and supports efforts to help troubled young women.

A.J. Gregory will serve as Mallette's co-writer. She is represented on the book deal by Fedd & Company.

John Frusciante Won't Attend Rock Hall Induction of Chili Peppers

Duri News - Drummer Chad Smith tells Billboard.com he, bassist Flea and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer got together in Los Angeles during the group's time off the road -- which pushed back the start of the North American leg of its world tour to promote 2011's Grammy Award-nominated "I'm With You."

"We just rehearsed and came up with some ideas and new song ideas and stuff and played together for two weeks, and it was really fun," Smith reports. "It came out great -- flowing and really natural and like we've been playing together a lot, which we have. We sent (Kiedis) CDs and he's like, 'I love this stuff! It sounds great. I love the new jams.' That's just good for everything; it's good for morale, it's good for the future. The future is bright.

So does that mean the next Chili Peppers album will appear in less than the five years between "I'm With You" and 2006's "Stadium Arcadium," or the four years between that and 2002's "By The Way?" "I think so -- I hope so, at least," Smith says. "Normally in Chili Peppers world we never really had this much of a kind of break in a tour. Before, if we had a month off, we would never get together and write song ideas; we always wrote songs when it was time for an album cycle. But everyone just wanted to play. It was great; I came to town, 'Hey guys, I'm gonna be here for two weeks. You want to get together and play?' and everyone was like, 'Yeah! Let's play!' So that bodes well for the future."

That said, Smith expects the group to be on the road for most of the rest of this year. With Kiedis "on the mend," the Chili Peppers hit the road again on March 29 in Tampa, Fla., before heading to Europe in June, with some U.S. make-up dates in August and in the fall. So a new album certainly isn't likely until the end of 2013 at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the Chili Peppers are also prepping for the release of a another single from "I'm With You" ("Brendan's Death Song") as well as the group's April 14 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Smith says the group, which on that night will also include past drummers Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez, will perform at the ceremony as well as host a private party the night before the inductions. Guitarist John Frusciante, however, will not be attending.

"He didn't feel comfortable coming, which we totally respect," Smith says. "We asked him... He said, 'I'm just not really comfortable with that, but good luck and thanks for inviting me.' It was all good. He's the kind of guy, I think, that once he's finished with something he's just on to the next phase of his life. The Chili Peppers are not really on his radar right now."

But, Smith adds, that won't dampen the celebration in Cleveland. "I'm very pleased about it," he says. "Music's not a competition. Yeah, you like to win Grammys and stuff, but (the Rock Hall) is different. It's not like the flavor of the month or the flavor of the year; it's for a long career we've been fortunate enough to have. I'm very humbled, because the people who are in there...it's not a joke. It's very cool. So we're looking forward to it. It'll be a fun thing. There's no pressure, like, 'Are we gonna win?,' none of that s***. We can just go and have a good time and celebrate with our friends and our families and our fans.

Google Privacy Snafu – Delete your Google Browsing History before it’s too late

Duri News - By March 01, 2012 Google Inc.’s controversial new privacy policy will come into effect, which will permit the online giant to collect, save and use your personal information as they please, if you are one of its users.

This move is sure to send shudders down many users’ spines especially those who do not wish their privacy to be invaded in any which way. Naturally, many privacy campaigners have now come down heavily on this new policy and have raised an objection with the American regulators

There is however, one way to thwart the web colossus in its endeavor to set up a permanent profile of yours, which could include your personal details such as age, gender, region, locality etc. You can do so by erasing your browsing history. This will restrict the extent to which Google can record your every action, as also any of your uneasy secrets.

Here are three easy steps to do so:

1. First sign into your Google account and then go to the Google homepage. In the upper right side there is the dropdown menu. Under your name in the upper right-hand corner you can see ‘account settings’ – Click over it.

2. Next, you will find in Account’s overviews a section called ‘Services.’ Under this there are sections Go to link – ‘View, enable, or disable web history.’ Click over it.

3. You will get Web History. You can wipe out all your search details by clicking over ‘Remove Web History.’ Once you do so the entire history of your searches will stay disabled (paused) unless you choose to turn it on once again.

This Instagram-Printing Party Box Could Soon Be Yours

Duri News - A peculiar lunch-box sized device called Instaprint popped up at insider events from the Grammy Awards to South by Southwest last year — spitting out Instagram photos into the physical world. Now its creators are working on bringing the box to the masses.

“Holding a physical photo in your hand is something that’s been lost over the last years,” explains Michael Lipton, the co-founder of Breakfast, the four-person agency that created Instaprint. “Nobody probably wants a shoebox of 1,000 of these things, but if they’re at party and can walk away with one, then it’s a nice keepsake.”

Breakfast calls itself a “physical-digital interactive agency.” You may be familiar with some of its projects: It built the blimp for Conan O’brien that automatically checked into Foursquare venues as it floated over them and a tweeting bike for Livestrong. As a side project, Instaprint fit with Breakfast’s agenda perfectly.

The wall-hanging box prints Instagram photos from events as they’re posted. It finds photos using the event’s hashtag, includes likes and comments when it prints, and uploads the collection to a website for browsing later.

It has a similar effect to handing out disposable cameras at a wedding — everyone takes photos, but they get pooled in one place. Meanwhile, guests walk away with a physical artifact.

Sound like something you’d like to have at your next party? Probably not yet. Breakfast only made about a dozen prototypes, and they’re not exactly self-serve. Renting a device, complete with staff member to keep it running, starts at $5,000 — a lot of money to drop on a novelty photo printer if you’re not on a corporate marketing budget.

Breakfast hopes that, with some tinkering, it can bring the price tag on Instaprint down to about $399. But it needs $500,000 to turn its prototype into an DIY kit, a process that involves updating and redesigning 100 parts. It’s taking a stab at collecting funds — and gauging interest — on Kickstarter. So far, it’s raised about $40,000.

If the funding comes through, the company plans to be shipping Instaprints by late summer. Each device will be powered by a mini Linux computer, easy to set up through wireless internet and will be inkless (the color comes from the photo paper).

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Sells for $4.62 million

Duri News - A tastefully restored aluminum-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was auctioned by Gooding & Company, for a record $4.62 million.

The Gullwing is a very, very special car in its own right. But this one here is a true jewel, given its history and immaculate condition. The fact that this is one of the only 29 Alloy 300SLs makes it

This SL, chassis number 5500208, was sent to America on May 27, 1955, and had a pretty normal life with no recorded race history, until 1980 when it fell in the hands of Hans Dieter Blatzheim of Bonn, Germany. He bought the car for $57,000 which is truly fantastic for an unrestored car, especially at that time.

It was then restored for the first time and, for some unknown reason, was sent back to Germany and came back to America in 1982. It went through some other repair jobs and engine rebuild by a couple of other owners, until it was bought by the McBride family. They gave it the most thorough restoration work, which took until mid 2011.

Zuckerberg Likes App That Turns Facebook Into Pinterest

Duri News - An app that takes the photos from your Facebook News Feed and puts them in a layout strikingly similar to Pinterest got the seal of approval from Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday.

The Facebook CEO pushed the “Like” button on the Friendsheet Facebook app, which launched in January but is now likely to gain plenty of traction from Zuckerberg’s thumbs-up. Nearly 12 million Facebook accounts subscribe to his Facebook Timeline.

The app displays public Facebook photos in small panels, just like popular social bookmarking site Pinterest showcases images on Pinboards. Although Friendsheet resembles Pinterest at first glance, the mastermind behind the app said it was also inspired by Facebook Timeline.

“The goal was to take Facebook photos, and turn it into a visual experience while maintaining speed, performance, and a great, intuitive experience,” Friendsheet creator Zachary Allia wrote on Facebook.

Friendsheet settings allow you to hide photo captions and comments for a more visual experience.

This isn’t the first site to imitate Pinterest’s success or layout. Pop mega star Lady Gaga’s new social network, Little Monsters, latches onto design elements of Pinterest.
