My Jailbroken iPhone

Earlier this morning I posted a Twitpic of my iPhone home screen. I got many questions asking about the setup. I jailbroke my iPhone months ago and after a few weeks started noticing some stability issues (apps crashing much more often, slower loading times) and I decided to put the bars up again. Last week I saw a new iPhone jailbroke app called qTweeter that made me decide to go for it again. Thanks to @AhhYeah from AppleiPhoneSchool.com for the help and recommendations. All of the following apps and mods are available in Cydia. Here’s my setup:

Theme: Smoog

There is literally hundreds of themes out there and IMHO this is definitely the best. It has custom icons for all the standard apps as well as many of the more popular ones. To use the theme you need to download the Winterboard App and then the theme, both available in Cydia.

LiveClock Mod: With the LiveClock Mod, the icon for the Clock app always show the current time, the seconds hand is even animated so you can use it for a simple stopwatch or timer right from the home screen.

WeatherIcon Mod: The WeatherIcon Mod changes the icon for your Weather App (or any app of your choice, for that matter) to show the actual temperature of the first location in the standard weather app. I prefer the Weather Channel App over the Yahoo! Weather App so I set the icon to show for TWC App instead, though it is still pulling the temp. from the Yahoo! Weather App. This also adds the current temperature to the status bar.

SBSettings: SBSettings is an app you launch by sliding your finger horizontal across the status bar. It gives you quick access to toggle different feature like Edge, Wifi, brightness, etc. It seems like when jailbroken, the battery tends to drain faster and if you can quickly and manually toggle features on/off you may be able to extend that battery life a little bit. (Obviously I’m running low on memory)

iBlackList: This app basically block calls and text messages from numbers that you chose. To be honest the only reason I have this app installed is because the college I graduated from seems to think they need to call me every week asking for me to donate money. I’ve asked to be taken off their list but I keep getting the calls. Fortunately, the calls are always from the same number and now I don’t see them at all.

qTweeter: qTweeter is an app you launch by sliding your finger from the top of the screen all the way down to the bottom. It is basically an app to quickly post to Twitter/Facebook. This, alone, is pretty cool but what makes this app really cool is If you are in Safari, iPod or Youtube apps you can automatically have it include a link to the web site, Amazon.com artist/song title page, or Youtube.com page.

CallMe: The CallMe app allows you to create a home screen icon to directly call a contact. You notice on the top left is the icon fro my wife. When I press the icon it dials my wife, it’s that simple.

Qik: Stream live video. Google it.

at&t Carrier Logo: Replaces the standard “AT&T” text with a better logo.

Battery: I don’t remember what this one was called but it replaces the battery icon with a numerical percentage.

Flashlight: The Flashlight app from Cydia has no limits on the brightness like the normal App store ones do. So it’s really bright. It’s also drains your battery.

My experience this time has been similar, apps tend to crash more often. For now it’s worth it. There are many other cool app sand mods out there available for jailbroken iPhones. What are some of your favorites?

4th Anniversary
