Sander Mulder started studying design in 1996, sparked by the creativity and ingenuity he displayed as a child. It soon hit home; this would become his life long passion. His successful graduation from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002, resulted in the start-up of his own design studio.

Always seeking new challenges and inspirations he has since then steadily been working on a diverse portfolio containing lighting, furniture and interior designs for international clients and his own collection. His work is proof of the firm believe that good concepts can only exist in symbiosis with a good execution, and it investigates new ways of approaching the construction, functionality and aesthetics of everyday objects and spaces.

Supported by the believe there’s no constant except change and that joy is the accelerator of creativity, he’s not afraid to wander aimlessly and conduct experiments in search of the coincidental beauty of failure. The resulting work is a combination of strong lines, subtle details, innovative techniques and bold statements, often questioning archetypes and their respective interpretations by mankind.

A great example of this is Woofers. This ‘Woofer’ speaker system is a cross-over between an addition to your sound system and your loyal four-footed companion. It’s available as a co-axial speaker system which consists of two dogs. The ‘Woofer’ speaker system contains custom engineered electronic filters and sounds remarkably well compared to your everyday speaker set.

Last week, the Dutch brand development agency VBAT unveiled the new brand identity for Telfort, one of the leading Dutch telecom providers. Telfort contacted VBAT and asked them to redo the whole visual identity to set themselves apart from the other telecom providers (T-Mobile, Ben, Hi, Vodafone, and KPN). The new look should reflect Telfort’s position as the aspiring, price-sensitive peoples’ champion within the sector.

The result is a logo made from two speech bubbles in reference to a conversation. When used in the whole branding package the speech bubbles get six different fresh and fruity colors.

They’ve also incorporated the bubbles into their website menu which works very well.

I like the way they use multi-colored graphics but I’m not sure if this is going to have the effect of brand recognition they want it to reach. But then again, I could be wrong…

Other than the colorful graphics, the identity also consist images of way too happy people doing all kinds of crazy stuff. You’ll see a woman using a leek instead of a phone, a young boy trying to listen to his calls through his dog’s head and a woman who has post-its sticked all over her and doesn’t really seem to know why.

What can you do with all the plastic waste floating around in the Pacific Ocean? A group of Dutch architects has an answer to this question. Their idea is to create an island, about the same size as Hawaii, out of it.

The island would be populated by ‘climate refugees’ who will live in recycled plastic homes and work on farms or grow seaweed. The idea is to make the entire plastic island self-sufficient with the habitants producing their own food and energy.

Here are a few sketches and ideas of what the island is going to look like:

According to the jury, the works of Thé are characterized by great dynamism. His numerous spiritual illustrations are remarkable agile and graceful, even in their notorious awkwardness and clumsiness. The combination of clear and accessible figurative quality innovation make his works recognizable and widely known and loved.

After that, in 1965, he came to the Netherlands and started as a draftsman at the Toonder Studio’s, initially as a volunteer and later as an employee.

In 1970 he was asked to provide illustration for Miep Diekmann’s children’s book. He became a freelance illustrator providing illustration to many children’s book authors such as van Guus Kuijer, Els Pelgrom, Sylvia Vanden Heede, Dolf Verroen and Annie M.G. Schmidt.
