The honky tonk blues

I have happy memories about the The Rolling Stones song Honky Tonk Woman. So when last October I spotted botanical tulips at the flower market, called “Honky Tonk”, I just had to buy these. Honky Tonk; a funny name for a tulip.

Immediately the chorus of the song starts singing in my head….

“It's the honky tonk women

Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues”

Back home as I plant the tulips in the grass basket, again the chorus of the song starts singing in my head! And every time and time again as I walk by the basket, the chorus starts in my mind. Sometimes it stays in my head the whole day. I even made my own lyrics to it:

“It’s the honky tonk TULIP

Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues”

But there is more to come.

After a winter of waiting (and singing), the tulips are in bloom. Alas, …….it is not tulip Honky Tonk I planted! The tulips are bright pink, whilst Honky Tonk tulips should be a soft yellow. I realise, all that singing was for nothing, ………..or?

Or is this what they call the honky tonk blues?

Tulipa Little Beauty no blues for me!

This is March.

March started with beautiful sunny and calm weather. Children were wearing shorts. I worked in the garden without a jacket and thought it was summer already! But last week we have had turbulent weather. It is cold and I long for my warm gloves again. That is March.

In the garden, despite the cold wind, nature wakes up. Luckily. As I look at the pots on the terrace, I see the first tulips flowering. Are they to soon? This same question comes up every year. “Spring stress” catches me. That is March too.

Will the garden be to early or to late? I view the pictures on my computer and feel relieved. In 2017 the garden was just like it is today. But during the open days in April the tulips in my garden were in full flower. So all will be fine on April 19 and 20 when the garden is open to the public again.

March. I have to get rid of that spring stress. I better admire the red-leaking leaf of the tree peony. Greet the first daffodils; appreciate the fresh leaf of the roses.

Because that is how it is in March, always. Spring stress turns into spring fever.
