Post noughties revolution

Adobe would have me, you and your granny think that Flash is Gods gift to us mere mortals, however, it’s web standards that’s rising to the occasion. Motion graphics anytime, anywhere on any device. Some say that CSS, HTML and JavaScript isn’t ready to replace Flash. They say it doesn’t matter because Flash is the number one motion graphics platform, and yet, plenty are giving web standards a go anyway. A little revolution is just what the doctor ordered.

Steve on Flash

Steve Jobs has posted a simply astonishing article about HTML5 and Flash. The two technologies are not the same and are not intended to replace each other. Though one can make the argument that HTML5 can produce products that are currently being done with Flash. That’s basically what Jobs is saying. Anything you can do we can do better, type of thing. It will be true for desktop based browser if Microsoft jumps onboard.

The Microsoft Effect

The web, myself included, is getting all giddy about CSS3 and the way it will make Rich User Interfaces more prominent on the web. CSS this and border-radius that. Look mom, no images etc. etc.
The reality is that the web design skills gap will now get wider, not narrower. Rolling up your sleeves and having a go will just look like that you’re, well, having a go. Basic, won’t cut it, adding some effects here and there won’t cut it. Rich user interfaces will become even more important and so the bar will be set very high. Consequently branding will start to make serious demands on any web presence. All because Microsoft is finally catching up.

How secret is a secret mailing list when those who make an objection get outed. I’m sure that’s not supposed to happen. This is not to say that we should pity Adobe. Far from it. They allegedly sabotaged the W3C Canvas API draft out of self interest. They may have shot themselves in the foot.
