Didn't see an existing thread for this. My wife was very excited to start this last night. I'm not sold on it being a full season of hour-long episodes rather than a single movie. Not sure how well it will hold up after more episodes, but it was a fun start. There were comments wanting less subsets this year, and in the past its gone in the opposite direction, so it's time to settle this once and for all! I'm keeping this running right up until next year's event to give everyone a chance to have their say - some don't arrive until the challenge has already started. So yes, this affects the 2027 list more than this year's. However, if things swing significally in one direction, I'll make slight changes to this year's (shaving a few off or vice versa). Any potential significant changes are for next year when everyone has had a chance to vote. So please vote if you're an OHMC participant or plan to be, and that's regardless of whether or not you're an active participate in the subsets.

1. Subset numbers. Less? More? Keep as is?
Feel free to share if you have an approximate number in mind. Or if you prefer to be more vague about it and just give one of the three options above that's fine, too.

2. The 2009 Horror Film Club titles have always been treated as subsets. Should they A) continue to be canon or B) remove the HFC list from the subset/theme list and open up the 29 titles to be eligible as potential unused subsets?

And feel free to share any subset-related feedback you might have.



A few reminders for those that might have forgotten or are new to the optional lists...


You DO NOT have to watch all subsets for completion, only 31.

Subset threads have an off season - they're open 24/7/365.

Subsets do not have to be watched on their assigned days. That only applies to themes.

There is no commitment to purchase anything unless you so choose. All subset titles are available to stream for free courtesy of alyxstarr. These sometimes include supplemental material such as commentaries. Of course there's also streaming links for the various streamers provided in the subset threads and the physical media/streaming guide.

Some theme days have multiple themes -- that doesn't necessarily mean just as many subsets will be used. Example: The Random Mashup day has four separate themes but more often than not only one or two subsets are used. 2025 was the exception with all four getting their own subset.

There have been several movies made that, due to negative press combined with public perception and nobody really having the desire to look up the numbers, have been labeled as financial failures when in fact, that was not the case. The numbers below are from several sources but primairly IMDB.

One that seems to be a popular perceived flop is 1976's King Kong. The movie got rather mixed reviews, and because so much hype surrounded it and it failed to surpass Jaws (by quite a wide margin) as the producer De Luarentis claimed, it has been labeled by most as a bomb. However, looking at it's actual world wide box office , it actually was a profitable movie, maybe more so than the more well received 2005 remake. It just didn't reach what they wanted , so it was more of a disappointment than outright flop.

-Action Jackson-1988- It did about $20 million domestically on a $7 million budget, and allegedly did an additional $45 million in video rentals, when those were still a thing. Many figured that since no more movies were made, it was a flop. But most evidence points to a regime change at Warner Bros and the new people in charge wiping the slate clean was the real culprit.

-Tarzan the Ape Man (1981 with Bo Derek) - Now this took me by surprise as this movie is pretty much objectively bad and was reviled by almost all critics in its time, even though I think maybe Roger Ebert had a couple of positive things to say about it. It's really something where one could take solace that it flopped, but it actually made $36.5 million on a $6.5 million budget. Making 6 times its production cost isn't a flop. Curious what made this movie popular in its day.

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 1st at dawn.*

*Challenge end date will vary from year-to-year, depending on when Labor Day falls (if it's within 3 days of the start of Sept., the challenge will extend to end of Labor Day. If it's longer, it'll end on the 1st at dawn.)

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.
