They are the type that are hard wired to power and together, so one goes off they all go off. They also have 9v battery backup. I gave up trying to figure out what was going on and pull the 10 detectors off the ceiling and took out their batteries after the 4th or 5th time they went off. As far as I can tell there is no way to tell which detector is tripping and causing them all to beep? So the only way I can figure to troubleshoot is to hook them up one at a time and wait for a false alarm? Any other ideas on how to figure out which detector is bad? I created folders on the external hard drive where I store downloaded movies and movie shows.

Some folders I named by the name of movies or serial's some folders was named by the date,when folder's were created, for example: 03_21-09.
When an external hard drive connected to PC, all folders are arranged in some order.

If they are arranged by name then the first in order are folders named by the date,than alphabetically are folders named by name of movie.

When I connected the external hard drive to the USB port of Phillips 5992 and tried to find some of the folders as I did when external hard drive was connected to PC, I saw (on the TV screen) that the folder tree was broken and the folders were named by name of movie and not anymore in the alphabetic order and folders named by the date located between folders by name.

This was very chaotic: some folders by date in the beginning, some folders by date in the end, some folders by date in the middle of broken folder tree.

But If Phillips 5992 software arranged the folders in some manner (not like PC) but arranged in another way, then maybe somebody can give me recommendation of how arrange(0r named on external hard drive) folders that will be easy finding some as on PC as on as on Phillips 5992 .

I know each of these brands are the best for these respective TV types. I understand that Plasma's better for quick motion and camera pans and LCD's better for bright rooms, etc. etc.

The Panny's a 50" plasma - haven't decided on the exact model, but it'll be a middle-range Vierra model, an S1 or a G10.

The Sammy's a 52" LCD - I'm leaning towards the LN52B550 or 530, the bells&whistles of the higher models don't interest me, but it's only 60hz.

Anyhoo, here's what I tend to watch:

About 50% is of HD content, consisting of HD videogames and movie on blu-ray.
The other 50% will be a combination of SD content: mostly 480i broadcast from a pretty good digital satellite and 480p from my region-free dvd player.

FWIW, my room is fairly bright, but no major glares and I'd sit about 10-12 feet from the TV.

I like that the Panny has an S-video input that the Sammy does not, which should improve the satellite cable image (I'm under NO assumption that the SD image will look good, I just want it to look less bad), and I'm certainly not going to stretch any 4:3 image. But then I like how there will be less chance of burn-in with the LCD.

And now, my original discs are damaged beyond repair (Disc Dr, heal thyself!). I've tried to download the clips I originally uploaded via Real Player and Vooby's...but when I try to burn a DVD of them, the audio drops completely out about halfway through each clip (the video does not have any issues, though).
What would cause this? I've made a duplicate of my personal footage on my laptop before onto DVD-Rs, and had no issue. Is it because I've downloaded them from YouTube? Even though I didn't have any "copy-protection" on them? I mean, they're home movies, for gosh sakes, lol.
I'd really like to save this footage. I had partitioned the 32GB SDD so that WinXP sat in the first 24GB, with a nice small Linux partition (Ubuntu, aka "Easy Peasy") taking up the final 8GB. I could dual-boot, via a Linux bootloader that let me select which OS to boot into - the 24GB WinXP or the 8GB Easy Peasy.

I decided to reinstall WinXP (I had nLited it and over trimmed, leaving out some services that I decided later I needed). The 24GB WinXP partition got reformatted and the OS was layed back in. When I bootup now, it goes straight into WinXP - no dual-boot option... that probably got hammered during the reformat.

So I've got this 8GB Linux partition with a fully functioning OS that I can't get to. If I boot from my Linux installation USB stick, I can see the partition, but I can't figure out how to boot from/to it. And if I try to reinstall Linux from the stick, it wants to subdivide the 24GB WinXP drive and create a new partition from inside that.

I know SQUAT about Linux, but it seems that I need to do one of the following:

(a) Figure out how to recover or re-create that program that ran at boot time to give me my dual-boot option again; or
(b) Figure out how to wipe the 8GB Linux partition and re-merge both partitions into one large WinXP-controlled 32GB partition - which I can then re-divide by reinstalling Easy Peasy from the USB stick.
