A DVD Worthy review on the movie Mirrors.

Mirrors movie a must see with Keifer Sutherland

Finally a decent fright flick to write about. Kiefer Sutherland rocks in the movie Mirrors and here’s why: Any B-rated actor would’ve made this movie another movie to sit, watch and forget about. Having a top notch actor in a movie like this makes all the difference in the world by anchoring a would be unbelievable story line to an exciting thriller.

Sutherland plays Ben Carson, an unemployed detective who finds work as a night watchman securing a burned-out upper scale department store. Odd things start happening shortly after his first night on the job which quickly turn from a “this isn’t the best job, but it pays the bills” setting to an all out “I should really find another job right the **** now!” but Ben trudges on in the search for truth. Of course, his semi-separated wife Amy Carson (played by up and coming hottie Paula Patton) won’t believe a word he has to say about his new found mirror madness.

Meanwhile Ben struggles to fight his past alcohol addiction by consuming meds and living with his sister while he gets back on his feet. You won’t want to miss Angela Carson played by cutie Amy Smart (Butterfly Effect fame and more) or her quick bare bottom scene. Of course this isn’t the only reason to check out Mirrors. Ben’s death defying search for the answers of how and why these sadomasochistic mirrors bring death to those that view them lead him to the mysterious answer: Esseker. It’s up to him whether he has the wear with all to complete the task.

Mirrors movie with Keifer Sutherland

For the fainthearted, there are some scenes that push the limit on the gore factor scale. For those that love this kind of stuff, check out the R-rated trailer on the official Mirrors movie site to get a better feel for what’s to come be in the movie Mirrors. Directed and written by Alexandre Aja of The Hills Have Eyes fame and writer Grégory Levasseur, this movie has a decent plot, great graphics, some decent explosions, a few buckets of blood, breastalicious scenes, gun play, evil, jumpy scenes and noises, creepy crawlies and more. What else could you ask for in a movie?

Surprisingly, Mirrors only took in 11 million bucks it’s first week in the theaters. Too bad, it’s one of the better horror flicks I’ve seen out. It only goes to show that marketing and hype can work if you do it right but it fell short for this movie this time. Make sure you pick up this DVD when it comes out.

A DVD Worthy review on the movie Shoot ‘Em Up.

Shoot 'Em Up

What could possibly be better than a Shoot ‘Em Up movie starring Clive Owen (Closer, Sin City), Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water, Sideways), Monica Bellucci (Matrix, Passion of the Christ) an endless stream of bullets and body counts to match? At first thought, nothing. However bullet blasting cheesiness proceeds as the the movie’s hot thrilling action scenes and storyline continue chase after chase to a thankfully but seemingly never ending climatic finale.

Shoot ‘Em Up kicks into fast action gear with gun fights from the beginning to the very end. Owen plays Mr. Smith, a unknown mysterious loner who finds himself doing the right thing by helping a woman and her newly born son Oliver from the villain leader Hertz (Giamatti) and his gun toting cohorts. Smith, not wanting to be the newly adopted father teams up with an unsuspecting sexy Donna Quintano (Belluci) to help protect the baby from Hertz’s relentless clutches.

Although Shoot ‘Em Up’s plot is hardly realistic, it’s premise could be semi-believable in it’s own context. Unfortunately there are a few scenes that push the limit in any type of reality. Once you see the movie you’ll know I mean (and scriptwriters, what’s up with the carrot fetish?).

If you are a fan of guns, Monica Bellucci, Clive Owen or Giamatti, then you’ll definitely get your fair share of all of them through out the movie. Shoot ‘Em Up is definitely a good movie despite some it’s short comings. The action scenes alone make this movie DVD worthy. If that’s not enough, who could resist anything with Monica Bellucci in it. Pick up your DVD copy ofShoot ‘Em Up from NewLine.

Semi Spoiler Alert There’s one scene to look forward to with Smith and Donna Quintano that is, er, quite climactic, er, rather orgasmic to say the least. Nothing like a little sex and violence.

DVD Worthy reviews the latest X-Files movie, I Want to Believe.

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully of X-Files

The results are in. The latest installment of X-Files: I Want to Believe would have been great for an extended episode on TV and should have never hit the theaters. Unfortunately the script for this movie isn’t up to par for today’s cinematic viewer’s demands. No not every movie has to have death defying explosions and car chases but this movie was a little too slow for me.

The X-Files movie trailer is much more exciting than the movie itself. Like usual, the people who created the trailer clearly added all the ‘best’ parts in addition to hyped up dramatic music which clearly stops shy of the movie itself.

Now, that said, if you are a Fox Mulder and or Dana Scully fan and you like the slow methodical drama of the X-Files, then you’ll probably enjoy this movie enough to see it in the theaters or pick it up on DVD or Blu-Ray.

X-Files does have a handful of light laughs to lessen the tension between Mulder and Scully’s on and off again relationship as well as their eternal push to distance themselves from their previous job with the FBI. The ‘I Want To Believe’ storyline does deliver some political social commentary as well as a religious take between hospital and church which may annoy some.

Mulder (David Duchovny) pulls it off as always as a man always searching for the truth and answers to unsolved problems. This time the FBI requests his help after having been ousted from the X-Files and FBI to help save another FBI member’s mysterious disappearance before it’s too late.

Scully (Gillian Anderson) has made a career choice to be a doctor and really tries to get away from her past work with the X-Files. Through the movie she ultimately gets dragged back in.

Notable character Father Joseph Crissman (Billy Connolly) plays a great role as a man with a not so great past to say the least. He pulls off a believable role as a priest that can help in solving the mystery through his visions. The challenge is getting the FBI to give him some respect and convincing them that his visions are real.

Yes, this movie was well done. Yes everyone did a great job in acting and directing. Yes, I want to believe the script writers can create a more explosive story line than this one, but they didn’t. Wait for it on DVD or TV. No the script is not worthy of the box office.
