Lately, I’ve been making a lot of golf content. Videos, clips, moments that live fast and keep moving. That’s how a lot of people have come to know me now. But photography is still the foundation. Always has been.

A few years ago I bought the Nikon Zfc thinking it would be something light to keep in my golf bag, maybe even my pocket. Something easy. Something I wouldn’t have to think about too much.

But that’s not what happened.

I ended up using my iPhone 17 Pro Max often to take a few snaps because it has a great camera; but it’s just not the same. What I was really searching for was something small enough to live in my pocket without thinking about it. Looking back, I think the impulse came from the Nikon Zfc reminding me of my Nikon FE2 film camera. That classic feel, the dials, the experience.

The only real time I used it before this was a few years ago in San Diego. I took it on a photo walk during a golf trip. Truth is, I was so locked into the trip, the weather, and the golf that I wasn’t focused on shooting at all. The camera was just with me because I’m addicted to photography. It’s always going to be around me… even when I’m not fully using it.

After that, it pretty much sat.

Until recently.

I wanted to document a girls golf day with some of my friends while photog-caddying. I told myself, you know what, let me take this camera that’s been collecting dust out. I don’t need to bring my workhorse.

And that’s when it clicked.

It made me pay attention again. Made me want to actually dial things in. Light, timing, composition. The small things that remind you why you started in the first place.

And that’s when I realized something.

This isn’t my best camera. Not even close.

For client work (my portfolio here), I’m still shooting with my Nikon D800 and D850. Those cameras have carried me through years of professional photography and still deliver every time I need them to. My local studio rental even has a Nikon Z9 and has offered it to me more times than I can count… but I stick with my tools because they get the job done for me.

At the same time, playing around with this smaller mirrorless camera made me want to finally take one of the big boy mirrorless cameras out and really work with it the right way.

Another thing that surprised me… I wasn’t impressed in the past when looking at the images on the Zfc LCD screen or even through the viewfinder. It didn’t hit me.

But once I loaded the files into the computer…

Completely different story.

Major difference.

That’s when the camera started to make sense to me.

But photography has never really been about that.

It’s about how present you are when you press the shutter.

It’s about whether you’re just documenting something… or actually creating something.

Is the Nikon Zfc a Good Camera for Golf Photography?

Making Photos While Golfing

These photos were made with people I see every week. Out on the course. No pressure. No expectations. Just real moments. Golf photography, candid lifestyle photography, and being present.

And somehow, that made them better.

Photography, Work, and Freedom

At this level, photography can get exhausting.

When you’ve been doing it as long as I have, when you understand the value of your work, when you’ve had to navigate budgets that don’t always reflect that value, it changes how you move.

That’s part of the reason I still caddie.

It gives me the freedom to not rely on photography for everything, and to choose the work I actually want to create.

That freedom matters more than any piece of gear.

Photography is still what I do.

Through Instagram and the golf community, I’ve met golfers from all over the world. Whether they’re visiting for a weekend, a business trip, or a full vacation, the conversation always ends up here.

Miami looks like a golf paradise from the outside. But once you get here, you realize the experience can vary. Conditions, pace of play, pricing, and overall vibe all matter.

My name is Dwayne Tucker. I’ve been playing consistent golf in Miami for over a decade.

I play a lot of golf.

But I make better shots with my camera.

This guide isn’t based on rankings, sponsorships, or marketing. It’s based on real experience; the courses I actually play, the ones I rotate through, and the ones I recommend when someone asks where they should tee it up.

Miami Lakes Golf Club

The Best Overall Public Golf Experience Right Now

A few years ago, my answer would have been Melreese.

Not just because of the layout, but because of the energy. The outside staff, management, kitchen, maintenance; everyone felt like family. That kind of community matters on a public course, especially when the course is working hard to stay in good condition.

When Melreese closed, a lot of us wondered where that feeling would go.

Today, that energy lives at Miami Lakes.

The course reopened to the public in late 2025, and you can feel the difference the moment you arrive. A good number of the staff from Melreese made the move, and the atmosphere reflects that same welcoming energy.

Condition-wise, it’s one of the best public setups in Miami. The turf feels healthy, the lies are clean, and the greens have real personality. They’re bold, undulated, and reward players who understand where to miss and how to manage the course.

From a photographer’s perspective, the property feels open and calm. Morning light cuts across the fairways beautifully, and late afternoons bring a quiet rhythm to the space.

If someone asks me where to play first in Miami, this is my answer.

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

A Championship Test in a True South Florida Environment

Crandon feels different before you even get to the first tee.

The drive over the Rickenbacker Causeway sets the tone. Once you’re there, you’re dealing with wind, heat, exposure, and a layout that doesn’t give you anything easy.

This is one of the toughest public courses in Miami. It’s long, demanding, and will show you exactly where your game stands.

They’ve made recent improvements to the greens and bunkers, and the difference shows. Fairways can still be inconsistent in spots, but maintaining turf this close to saltwater is a challenge most inland courses don’t deal with.

King tides can occasionally impact holes on the property, which is something to keep in mind when planning your round.

Wildlife is everywhere. Iguanas, raccoons, and the occasional surprise remind you that this is real South Florida.

If you pay attention, hole 18 gives you a quiet window where the Miami skyline opens up. It’s one of my favorite photo moments on any public course in the city.

Just remember; take the photo and keep the pace moving.

The Biltmore Golf Course

Classic Miami Resort Golf

The Biltmore is about the experience.

As a local, it’s not part of my regular rotation, but I understand what it offers. This is a historic resort property designed around the visitor experience.

Everything here carries a premium feel; pricing, parking, range access; but that comes with the territory.

The course itself is long, open, and fair. It’s not overly complicated, but it requires solid ball-striking and patience.

The practice facilities are strong, and the Jim McLean Golf School on property adds serious credibility for players looking to invest in their game.

If you’re visiting Miami and want a classic resort round with history behind it, the Biltmore delivers.

JW Turnberry Resort

True Resort Atmosphere

Turnberry gives you a full resort golf experience.

Both courses require target golf and smart positioning. It’s less about overpowering the course and more about managing your way around.

The conditioning is strong, the landscaping is polished, and the overall environment feels built around enjoying the day rather than grinding through a competitive round.

If you’re staying at the resort, the experience is seamless. If you’re visiting from elsewhere, expect valet and resort-style logistics.

Trump National Doral

Championship Conditions and a Serious Test

Doral is one of the most recognized golf properties in South Florida.

The Blue Monster gets most of the attention, and the name fits. It’s long, exposed, and unforgiving. Water is everywhere, and if you miss the fairway by a little, you may not find your ball.

Personally, I enjoy the Red Tiger and Golden Palm. They feel more balanced and playable while still demanding good golf.

Conditions across the property are consistently excellent, and the practice facility is one of the best in Miami; unlimited balls, large putting areas, and strong short-game space.

This is serious golf. Between the length, wind, heat, and layout, it will show you exactly where your game stands.

Miami Beach Area Courses

Convenience for Beach Visitors

If you’re staying near the beach, these are the courses I rotate through depending on what I’m working on.

Miami Beach Golf Club

The strength here is the practice facility.

The short-game area helped me tighten up my chipping and pitching more than anywhere else locally. The range now has lights, fans, and coverage for evening sessions.

The downside is pricing. A large bucket has gone from about $13 to around $24.

The course itself is solid but busy. Early morning or late-day rounds are the best move.

Normandy Shores Golf Club

Normandy is straightforward, relaxed, and honest.

The range is mostly mats, but the putting surfaces roll well, and the overall vibe is social and easygoing.

Miami Shores Country Club

Miami Shores has an old-school municipal feel.

The greens have a subtle elevated “turtle shell” shape, and the rough can be heavy St. Augustine. The range stays open late, which makes it a good after-work practice option.

Hole 17 is a tough par three, so it helps to give yourself some room before you get there.

Granada Golf Course

A Historic Nine-Hole Gem

Opened in 1923 and designed by Donald Ross, Granada is one of the oldest courses in South Florida.

Strategy matters more than power here. What makes the course special is the community. I’ve shown up as a single many times and ended up paired with the same local players.

It’s simple, social, and one of the most authentic golf experiences in Miami.

Miami Springs Golf & Country Club

A historic municipal course that once hosted early professional events.

Recent renovations improved the greens, and the layout is fair and approachable. It’s an easy walk and a solid relaxed round.

Some of Miami’s best courses require member access, including La Gorce, Indian Creek, Riviera, and Deering Bay. Outstanding facilities, but you’ll need a connection to experience them.

Miami golf isn’t perfect. It’s expensive. Conditions vary. The weather will test you.

Early this morning, I was on the phone with my grandmother, talking about how blessed we are to still be connected as a family; her being the root of it all. That conversation stayed with me. It reminded me that presence doesn’t always mean proximity. Even when you can’t be in the same room, the bond still holds. Family shows up in ways that aren’t always physical, but always felt.

Why This Holiday Campaign Changed My Perspective

With golf season, personal work, and portrait photography filling much of my year, holiday campaigns aren’t usually where I land. The final quarter tends to move quickly, with attention placed on finishing strong. This shoot slowed that pace and offered space to view the season from a more intentional place.

Corielle; Jewelry Rooted in Tradition and Family

Earlier this year, when I took Corielle on as a client, what stood out immediately was their respect for tradition and family. From naming pieces after loved ones to Cori’s story of how she found her way into jewelry design, the brand has always been rooted in connection. All of my best rounds have one thing in common; and no, it is not just that I made putts.

The honest truth is that I put in time the night before, rolling putts on my Perfect Practice Putting Mat.

A Portrait of Preparation

The first image you’ll see above is one of my portraits of Keegan Bradley from our June shoot. He’s sitting at his desk, focused on the final pre-production model of JLab’s Epic Lux Lab Edition, the custom Ryder Cup 2025 headphones that will travel to Bethpage Black with Team USA.

I start here because that one frame holds so much of what I believe in: dedication, detail, and the quiet work no one sees.

What the Ryder Cup Means

For anyone new to golf, the Ryder Cup is the sport’s most electric stage, a team showdown between the United States and Europe every two years. This year it lands at Bethpage Black in New York. For veterans of the game, you already know how much it means to wear your team’s colors in this event.

That weight is why this project mattered.

My Connection With Kenneth Patterson (KP)

Back when the Instagram golf community was still just a spark, Kenneth Patterson (KP) and I connected. There weren’t many of us who looked like us in that space, so it was easy to recognize each other. I first met KP at the Birds of Condor booth at the 2019 PGA Show, photographing candids. Since then we’ve stayed brothers; tournaments, phone calls, ideas traded across miles.

One lesson from those days: you never know which personal project today will open doors tomorrow. Years ago in Dallas, I brought my camera to a charity tournament just to document the guys. We had a great time, we won the tournament. Those images stuck with KP. When this Ryder Cup project came up, one of his first calls was to me.

KP’s Words About This Project

“Working with Keegan on this project was a full-circle moment. I’ve watched his growth from my TaylorMade / Adidas days to now as a player and a person; I see his growth and understand why he’s Captain. I know Team USA will be suited and booted for Bethpage with JLab’s custom edition. This project highlighted KB’s dedication to the role as RC Captain and how that dedication has touched the people in his inner circle. Special shout out Doc, Seve, Mark Bradley, the team at Flag and Anthem, and The Bears Club.

A black kid from Arkansas got a chance to do something monumental with a major champion and Ryder Cup Captain. One of my first calls was to Tucker with TuckerTookThat to document the day and tell the story via his lens.”

That’s bigger than an assignment. That’s trust. That’s community.

The Work Behind the Lens

Just as golfers grind on the range, putting in hours for a few moments under pressure, creatives do the same. This shoot was Florida in June’s preheat oven temperatures, scattered thunderstorms, tight time windows. My assignment was five minutes with Keegan inside a 20-minute block. Because of the relationships KP built, I also got to document behind the scenes of the film crew led by Jason Johnson and Sam Hoerdemann, with Sharron Matthews and Patrick Gallahue from PGA Tour bringing it all together.

Watching that team work, lighting, audio, production, scheduling, all reminded me of a tournament practice session. So many moving pieces, all aiming for a clean shot when the time comes.

Gratitude

I’m grateful to KP for trusting me, to Keegan for his focus and patience, to Sharron, Patrick, Jason, Sam, and every hand on set. It takes a village to make visuals that look effortless.

I recently shared a photograph I made for Corielle on the Jewelry subreddit, and it went viral. It always excites me when a photo resonates. This time, the platform itself made the experience even more rewarding. Reddit hosts communities with very specific rules, cultures, and posting styles. At first, that turned me off. I like the freedom to post what I want, how I want. But I quickly saw how these guidelines keep the communities genuine and spam-free. I respect that.

The photo remains a favorite of mine from the House of Hearts campaign I photographed for Corielle earlier this year. It shows Montana portraying Lauren (you can learn more about Lauren and the history of Corielle). She soaks up the Palm Beach sun by the pool, holding a glass of champagne in one hand and a book in the other. Corielle’s rings and jewelry complete the scene. The image celebrates elegance, leisure, and the small, beautiful details of life.

Sharing this photo on Reddit reminded me why I love these communities. Unlike Instagram, where content is often driven by algorithms and entertainment reels, Reddit allows people to connect over genuine interests, photography, jewelry, lifestyle. You share work and people actually care. They critique, they admire, they inspire. For photographers looking for a space where your work is seen and appreciated for what it truly is, Reddit might just be the place to go back to.

This post is my little love letter to photography, to sharing moments that matter, and to the communities that make us better creators. And yes, it’s also a reminder that sometimes, the best responses come when you let people experience your work in its purest form.

Introduction: More Than a Portrait

When I first met Gerri Koppelman, it wasn’t through a camera. I work as a caddie at one of Miami’s top golf clubs, and that’s where our paths crossed. Caddying isn’t my long-term goal, but it’s help me pay for photography, survive in an expensive city, and stay close to golf, my second love.

What I love most about Gerri is that she’s a real character. She has a lively soul, unmatched energy, and she’s unfiltered in a way that’s refreshingly honest. You always know how she’s feeling because she tells you, right then and there.

That kind of honesty feels rare in the world I move through, on the golf course and in the social environments I grew up in. That’s why being around Gerri feels so good. Even with everything she’s seen and all that she has, she’s grounded, kind, and genuinely herself.

The Plan: Photographing Gerri for Her 72nd Birthday

We got closer over the summer of 2023. She often played golf with a group of women I caddied for, and we built a connection. Around late November, marking one year since her husband Charles passed away, I noticed a quiet change in her. I could feel how much she missed him.

Months later, I kept thinking about photographing her. I’ve seen what my photography can do for women; it brings joy, confidence, and sometimes healing. That’s why I started my “Because You’re Beautiful” sessions, to show women how I see them through my lens.

Gerri had always been so kind to me, and I wanted to give that kindness back through the one thing I know how to do best.

No Crew, Just Connection

We planned the shoot around her birthday in May (It’s Gerri’s birthday again today! Happy Birthday Gerri!), but it wasn’t until the summer of 2024 that we made it happen. When I arrived at her place, I packed the gear I’ve come to trust: two strobes, a reflector, a Nikon with my 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm lenses, a five-foot octabox, a beauty dish with a honeycomb grid, c-stands, and a seamless backdrop. Thank God for push carts.

We set everything up in her living room. No GoPro, no behind-the-scenes videos this time (I think she or I might have gotten a clip for IG or something I remember a video when we shared there). I usually bring an assistant, but this session needed to stay personal and grounded. Sometimes the best energy comes when it’s just the subject and I.

Styling and Confidence: Gerri in Her Element

Gerri doesn’t need a stylist. She could style your favorite stylist. I already knew her nails would be flawless. She comes from a background in the beauty industry doing nails, and it shows. She had a few looks laid out, and together we made choices that matched the energy we wanted to create.

During the shoot, she showed me old photographs of her with legends like Frank Sinatra, Kanye West before he became Ye, Whoopi Goldberg, and I think JLo was in the mix too. It was amazing to see that part of her history. If you look up Charles Koppelman and what he accomplished, it makes sense why their lives were so full of those connections.

I’ve never been big on celebrity culture. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at the Atlantis hotel, where it wasn’t unusual to see famous people at the same pool or walking through the lobby. I guess I became desensitized to the idea of fame. For me, what matters most is character. Gerri’s character is what truly stands out!

Moments That Matter: Food, Stories, and the Cigar

Midway through the shoot, Gerri prepared food and drinks, and we sat for a bit. She told me stories about Charles, their travels, and his love for desserts. It was one of those quiet, beautiful moments where the photos almost became secondary to the experience itself. Seeing her smile, hearing her laugh, and feeling the love she still holds for him reminded me why I do this work.

We used a cigar in one of the scenes as a tribute to Charles, who always had one with him. With a little editing, we made it glow like it was lit. It was subtle but meaningful, a piece of memory captured in the frame.

Closing: Your Beauty, Your Moment

This session reminded me why I do this work. Photography isn’t about perfection. It’s about truth, presence, and feeling seen.

Meeting Cori: Our First Collaboration Begins

Cori, the founder and creative mind behind Corielle, had flown in the night before. This was our first time meeting in person, and within moments, I saw the energy she brings to her craft. She’s deeply intentional. Every piece of her collection tells a story, and I wanted the photography to honor that.

Why Pre-Production Matters in High-End Photography

In the days leading up to the shoot, I kept my promise to her. I sketched out concepts, mapped the light, imagined the frames before they existed. Pre-production isn’t glamorous, but it’s where the creative heartbeat begins. We had a clear vision, and now we were about to bring it to life.

The Value of Full-Scale Production
Productions like these — real productions — can get expensive fast. The kind of photography that moves people and elevates a brand, takes more than just a camera and a good idea. It takes gear, people, time, and most of all, intention. That morning, I had packed enough equipment to build out any concept we might dream up. I wanted Cori to see what my team and I could bring to the table — not just technically, but creatively.

Of course, I have a portfolio. Years of work that showcase the kind of visual quality and direction my team can produce. But even the strongest portfolio can’t replicate the energy of a live set: real-time collaboration, adjustments in the moment, and the way the mood shifts when the light hits just right. This was her brand, her story. This shoot was my way of showing how we could tell it.

The weather was perfect. Palm Beach gave us perfect photo-light and skies without a single complaint. The kind of weather that lets you focus on the work — fully, joyfully — without worrying about backup plans.

But this story didn’t begin here in Palm Beach. It started a few months earlier with a Google search.

Enter Reina: The Connector

I had typed something like “PR publicist Palm Beach” into Google, just exploring. Miami had been my home base for years, but I felt a pull to expand north. There’s something about Palm Beach — the light, the energy, the elegance — that makes it ideal for portraits. I was looking to connect with someone who understood that creative nuance and could help me tap into the right circles.

That’s how I found Reina.

Her energy had a spark. Slightly chaotic in a way that felt productive — like she was always moving and probably talked with her hands. I reached out. We exchanged a few messages, and not long after, I invited her to a shoot.

At the time, I had a commercial photography assignment for a jeweler showcasing her line at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. After wrapping that shoot, I still had my gear in the car and a suite at The Ben with beautiful hallways. I texted Reina: come through. Let me take a few portraits of you.

It was one of those spontaneous moments where you don’t overthink. Just create. Maybe one day when someone writes the story of my photography career, they’ll find that little chapter — the shoot at The Ben that quietly led to something more.

When she arrived, I noticed her necklace right away. It was striking. She told me. “It’s from Corielle.”

I mentioned that I was looking to do more jewelry campaign work, and without hesitation, she said “I have someone I need to connect you with. You’ll love her.”

That someone was Cori.

The Build: From Miami to Palm Beach

We left Miami at 5 a.m. The sky was still dark, the air was cool, and the city felt peaceful. It was the kind of morning that makes you feel like you’re ahead of the world. To make room for all the gear, I had to take out my golf clubs from the SUV, which wasn’t easy for me. As we drove into Palm Beach and passed the Par 3 course, I saw the maintenance team mowing the greens. If I wasn’t shooting that day, I’d probably be teeing off right then. But this shoot was the priority.

My assistant Johnny and I were fueled by a pair of Celsius energy drinks I had picked up before we left the house. We were going to need them to get through the commute, the full shoot day, and the drive back to the studio that night. On the road, we listened to music. Johnny’s a musician too, so we shared some of our past projects and I even played him a track I had done with a good friend (SUBPAT) for his first project. Creative energy all around.

In the car, I had my sketchbook with my gear checklist and a printed version of the creative brief. I like to have everything mapped out — something physical to stay aligned with the vision.

As we entered the neighborhood, I was struck by how beautiful it was. The homes had that wealthy old money island feel, like something out of Harbor Island in the Bahamas. Manicured landscapes. Clean design. Quiet elegance.

When we arrived, we met Cori, did a quick walkthrough of the property, and immediately began unpacking. Johnny and I started building the production setup — C-stands, sandbags, 8×8 and 6×4 scrims, modifiers, and reflectors. We hadn’t had the chance to scout the location beforehand, which is rare for me. Usually I like to know every angle and walk the space ahead of time. But sometimes, you have to think on your feet and still deliver the same quality.

We built the first and second scenes out front in the driveway. We wanted clean, studio-feeling portraits using natural light — a refined, editorial look. The second scene was titled “The Arrival,” featuring Montana, our model playing Lauren, returning to the house with that calm, graceful energy that set the tone.

The final scene was shot in the backyard by the pool. The light was soft. The mood was intimate and timeless.

Telling the Story: House of Hearts

This campaign wasn’t just about jewelry. It was about telling a story. “House of Hearts” centers on two sisters — Lauren and Blake — returning to their family’s Palm Beach home for their annual visit. It’s about connection, legacy, and quiet luxury. Bubblies poured, letters aged with time, moments quietly exchanged by the poolside. The jewelry—woven into the sentiment, an heirloom of memory itself.

Cori’s sister, Stephanie, was on set. One of the necklaces is named after her middle name too — The Blake. A bracelet is named after her daughter, Waverly. Having both sisters there added meaning. The energy turned the story into something real.

Montana channeled Lauren beautifully. She wasn’t just modeling. She was living in the character. Reina brought her signature energy. Stephanie brought warmth and mastermind for set design. Johnny kept things moving with gear and setup. Cori led with vision and trust.

And me — I photographed, directed, and shaped the light to bring it all together.

Final Thoughts

Every TuckerTookThat shoot is different—except for one thing: my perpetually sweaty shirts. I always bring two, just in case. Some shoots take weeks of prep and location scouts. Some unfold on the fly. But what stays constant for me is the level of care I bring to each one. From leaving Miami in the dark, sketchbook and Celsius in hand, to building a full set from scratch in a Palm Beach driveway — this is the kind of work that fuels me.

We didn’t just photograph jewelry. We told a story of women, of memory, of emotion. And I’m proud of the world we created together.

I’ll never forget the moment that changed everything. I was walking the fairways at Riviera Country Club (Coral Gables), caddying for clients in 2019, when I stepped in a hole and felt a sharp pain shoot through my knee. It wasn’t the first time my body had reminded me of the toll years of skateboarding, basketball, and other high-impact activities had taken on me, but it was the wake-up call I needed. I had spent years taking my body for granted, never focusing on stretching or caring for the muscles and joints that carried me through life. I was young, strong, and I relied on that, until I wasn’t.

In the aftermath of my injury, I found myself in physical therapy, working hard to regain mobility and strength. During these sessions, I began stretching regularly, and CJ introduced me to yoga taking me to my first yoga class. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had always associated yoga with flexibility, something I wasn’t sure my body was ready for after the injury. But CJ invited me to my first heated yoga class, and I was intrigued. Little did I know that yoga would become a turning point, not just for my body, but for my photography as well.

As I became more invested in yoga, I began noticing how it made me feel; not just physically, but mentally too. It helped me move with more awareness, it eased my pain, and it brought a sense of calm to my often hectic days. The more I practiced, the more I felt compelled to capture the beauty of it. Photography has always been my way of telling stories, and yoga presented an entirely new story to share. I wanted to document the peace, strength, and vulnerability I witnessed in the practice of yoga, capturing those fleeting moments that speak volumes.

So, I set out to photograph yoga in Miami, hoping to bring my newfound passion for the practice into my work. I was eager to share the authenticity of the practice, the dedication, and the beauty of each posture. Photography became a way for me to not only experience yoga in a new light but also to bring that energy to others through my lens. I began photographing yogis, capturing moments of stillness, focus, and strength. The camera allowed me to connect with my subjects in a unique way, and I soon realized that yoga wasn’t just a physical practice, it was a mental and spiritual one that deserved to be captured in its truest form.

However, my journey into the yoga community wasn’t without its challenges. When I first set out to photograph yoga in Miami, I assumed it would be easy to find the right teachers and students who were open to collaboration. But the reality was more complicated. While I encountered some incredible yogis, I also met a few who didn’t quite understand the value of what I was doing. Many were focused on the latest yoga trends, their outfits, and their Instagram photos rather than appreciating the artistry of a photographer’s work. It was a stark contrast to my experiences photographing yoga in places like Colorado, where the practice seemed to be more focused on inner growth than outward appearance.

Despite these challenges, I remained committed to capturing the essence of yoga, the raw, unfiltered beauty of it. Photography, for me, is more than just documenting what’s in front of the camera. It’s about telling a story, about connecting with the people and the practice I’m photographing. Yoga became a powerful tool for me to connect with my own body, and in turn, it gave me the lens through which to connect with others.

Through my experience with yoga, I’ve learned that the best work comes from a place of passion. Whether you’re photographing a yoga class, a fashion shoot, or a product for a brand, creating something authentic is what resonates most. For me, yoga has not only helped me physically but also deepened my appreciation for photography as a form of storytelling. It’s about capturing moments that speak to the heart, moments that inspire, and moments that showcase the essence of what we love.

I’m constantly reminded of the importance of shooting what you love, no matter what that passion may be. Whether it’s yoga, travel, or lifestyle, the key to creating meaningful work is to be authentic and true to your vision. Photography is my way of sharing what I’m passionate about with the world. And through yoga, I’ve discovered that there’s always room for growth, for connection, and for capturing the beauty of life in its purest form.

I glanced over at Tony Rodriguez, standing a few feet away, his eyes fixed on the green ahead, completely unfazed by the blinding light and the dew still clinging to the blades of grass. Tony isn’t just any model—he’s worked with brands like Nike, Dior, Puma, and El Palacio de Hierro. The kind of brands that make you pause when you see their name in lights. But for me, he’s not just the model; he’s a friend. A neighbor turned golfing buddy.

The hat. A Hat for Winners. A symbol of something bigger. As I write this, I’ve named the hat “Island Gold.” I had just received my new TuckerTookThat hats, representing my photography brand and my passion. I had wanted to shoot it for a while now, and who better than Tony, the guy who has always given 110% on and off the course?

Now, Tony might not have known it, but today he was wearing the hat of a winner. And, ironically enough, he might not have even realized how fitting that was because, for the first time in our golf history, he beat me. The tables had turned, and I was still a little bitter about the mistakes I’d made during the game. But that’s golf, right? Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and on this day, Tony was the one to walk away with the win.

I didn’t mind. After all, I win in my own way—through my photography. And Tony, well, he’s always been a winner. There’s no one else who works harder, who puts in the hours, who is so dedicated to being the best. And that’s why I knew this portrait session would be a good one.

After our game, Tony had a few hours to spare before his flight to New York for another shoot. I could tell he was in a rush, but I convinced him to swing by my home studio for a quick portrait session. “I’ve got some new gear to test,” I said. “A new lens, a new V-flat, and I want to make some photographs of you in my new hat and finally photograph you.”

This wasn’t just another shoot. This was my brand. My vision, my work, captured in a single frame. Captured with very little time and a look that I’ve done many times before, but looking to fine-tune it. We’d often talked about collaborating, whether for a commercial or a brand assignment, but today was different. This time, the brand was my own. And it felt right.

I couldn’t wait to share these portraits with the world. These are the world’s best shots—unplanned, we didn’t have a stylist, Tony was fresh off the golf course, and in the world of production, we were free-styling with all of this. But I’m glad we decided to create the shots because that moment will never be the same again. That’s the beauty in photography for me. The hat was more than just an accessory. It was a reminder that we’re all winners in our own way: through the hard work, dedication, and passion we bring to our craft. This ain’t Nike, but them checks come when you just do it…
