I golf, so it is important that I learn how to read weather. i found this to be a pretty helpful way of "old school" weather forecasting.

I found this because I am on the net..instead of golfing...because it is SNOWING!

And yes, all the signs were there ;-)

Peter Lik is a phenomenal photographer, I collect his work. He is the man who shot the pictures "Heaven on Earth" and "Almighty" that i referred to in earlier posts.

NBC announced today that he will be featured in an upcoming series, "100 miles to Nowhere"

If you enjoy amazing photography, and want to see the extreme measures he goes to get the "one shot", you will groove on these videos.

The one with the snow is about Red Rock Canyon, my special place, and I happened to be there during that storm.

Long and Winding Roads

I have a penchant for twisty, crazy, insane roads. If it is a scenic route, I'm driving it. If it's a mountain pass, I'm driving it. I have done some phenomenal drives this year...the Great Ocean Road in Australia, the Milford Road in New Zealand and some detours there too that ended up being pretty hairy. Loved it! ;-)

I did some very amazing drives on this last trip as well. I crossed multiple mountain passes, and found some great twisty, crazy insane roads. One road, from Jerome AZ to Prescott AZ was so good that i drove to the top of the mountain and turned around and drove back down! 12 miles...158 switchbacks. But that road is pretty good, banked corners, well maintained, and lots of fun.

I took video of most of these drives ( I'm putting them together in movies) There is one drive that I don't have videos for. That's how wild and crazy it was. It is a section of Route 66, part of the 1930's section, the Oatman Highway, and honestly, I don't think it has been maintained since it was bypassed in the mid 40's.

No side barriers. No shoulders. Sheer drops. Shoulders collapsing down the pass. Warning signs everywhere. Hairpin turns, and switchbacks for miles.

It was awesome!

I found these two videos on Youtube of a drive along the Oatman Highway, and up and over Sitgreaves pass. If you are a driver, or have driven this road, you'll appreciate it.

Makes me want to go for a drive or something ;-)

Fast Food In the Fast Lane

One of the special issues of life on the road is gassing up. I’m not talking about the car. Actually that is a special issue too, they do things differently in America. But, gas is gas.

But fueling up the body? There is an infinite variety of choices. There’s the “I don’t really feel like stopping” kind of meals. There’s the “Man, I need a break from driving” meals. There’s the “Gimme an espresso and let me loose” kinda meals. )It’s those times that my radar detector comes in handy.)

Sometimes, the miles are going great…the wind feels right in your hair, driving is a joy, the road is great…and you just want to drive. It’s those times, when you just want to keep on trucking…eating and driving..they just kinda go together.

I have to admit that I stopped at McDonalds the other day. I haven’t eaten fast food in a really long time, and I can’t remember the last time I ate at Mickey D’s.

But man, I needed some grease. And McDonalds seemed to be the perfect solution.

I drove up to the menu at the drive through, and was most surprised to see all these…why…healthy items on the menu. Low fat selections….salads even, for crying out loud. WTF was that all about? Good Lord…times have changed.
But , if I was gonna walk on the dark side of fast food, then I was gonna go for the grease.

I ordered the kid’s cheeseburger meal, baby steps as it were. I ripped into that cheeseburger like a woman possessed. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t half bad either. Strangely satisfying. Funky American cheese,.different than Canada…more petroleum based…but even that had it’s charms..I mean, a greasefest is a greasefest.

But, oh my, I have to admit, the French fries were freaking fabulous!

I don’t know how they do it, but they were SO good. I snarfed them down like I had never had a fry in my life, and I would never see one again.
Hot. Crispy. Really Really Salty. Bits of salt sticking to the grease on my fingers. Just as good when I licked it off my fingers than it was on the fries…maybe better.
It’s almost embarrassing to admit how fine them fries was.

I’m thinking fine french fries and other food fare might be fabulous fodder for future posts.
I’m writing this at the IHOP .

They’ve set down a big pot of coffee, and all the pancakes I can eat.

I’m gonna explode.

Not as the Crow Flies

I had a most incredible day today. In my usual manner, I planned one thing, and ended up doing something completely different. Never in one day have I had my breath taken away so many times, in so many different ways.

I veered of the interstate, because I saw a twisty windy scenic route ( as I am wont to do). It was a most beautiful drive, and I ended up in Zion National Park. I then witnessed some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen, it is truly a magical place. I hiked to waterfalls..three of them. I stood nearly underneath them, and felt the power of the water, the water which helped to create this place of magnificent beauty.

When I left Zion, I took the road less traveled, Highway 89, and again, drove a road with many switchbacks and hairpin turns. I stopped many times along the way, it seemed that there was a vista view in every direction. I drove through a tunnel 1.1 miles long, constructed in the 1930's, built in the days before large RV's and trucks. Large vehicles must be escorted through the tunnel, and it must be one way traffic as they go through. There are no lights in it, and it is most strange to know that you a climbing...through a mountain.

On Highway 89, I saw an opportunity to turn left, so I did ;-) Highway 14 took me to over 10,000 feet. I found myself in a winter wonderland, with meadows full of snow, white capped peaks, and a valley below me of green glistening with pure white snow.

I ended up in Cedar City, Utah. It's only 174 miles by interstate from where I started this morning..just a couple of hours at 75 mph. I drove 263 miles, and it took me all day.

One magnificent day.
