After setting a record for entries last year, the number of votes this year is way down, which means the results so far are inconclusive. If I don't get enough votes in by Friday at midnight I'll have to scrap the Listener's Choice portion of the awards.

Thanks to everyone who's voted so far, but with ties across the board in every category, posting those results would be pointless.

I'll still be posting my picks on Saturday, one day prior to the Grammy Awards, so check back in for that regardless of what happens with the Listener's Choice Awards.

As usual I've chosen enough Song Of The Year nominees to round out a compilation album, while limiting myself to the more traditional five nominees for Album Of The Year and Best Sound Quality.

So, without any further ado, here are this year's nominees:

Song Of The Year
The Decemberists – Don't Carry It All
Cake – Sick Of You
Ron Sexsmith – Late Bloomer
Grouplove – Naked Kids
Cut Copy - Need You Now
Iron & Wine – Half Moon
Elbow – Lippy Kids
My Morning Jacket - Outta My System
James Blake - Limit To Your Love
Paul Simon - Dazzling Blue
The Cave Singers - Distant Sures
Fleet Foxes - Bedouin Dress
PJ Harvey - Written On The Forehead
Lana Del Rey - Video Games
Wilco - Born Alone
The Handsome Furs - Repatriated
The Head And The Heart - Coeur D'Alene
TV On The Radio - You

Album Of The Year
The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
The Head And The Heart - The Head And The Heart
The Cave Singers - No Witch
TV On The Radio - Nine Types Of Light
Wilco - The Whole Love

Best Sound Quality
Elbow - Build A Rocket, Boys!
The Cave Singers - No Witch
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Ryan Adams - Ashes & Fire

I'll be announcing my own picks on Saturday, February 12th, one day ahead of the grossly inferior Grammy Awards, which means listeners have from now until then to vote on their picks in the Listener's Choice awards, which I'll announce on the same day.

In case you need to refresh your memory, here are all the song of the year nominees, courtesy of YouTube. Just press play and enjoy the playlist. My apologies for the iffy sound quality on some of the videos and the wild fluctuations in volume, but that's YouTube for you.

And when you're ready to make your picks, there are several options. If you're a fan of Dynamic Range Radio's page on Facebook, just click on the SurveyMonkey button on the left side of the page. Or simply scroll down to make your picks.

Dynamic Range Radio's Year-End Charts (part 2)

Dynamic Range Radio's year end recap continues as I take a look at the top 50 artists played during the calendar year.

As usual, the top 10 is largely made out of old favourites of mine with the top 3 artists on the chart remaining unchanged from last year. Arcade Fire jumped 20 spots all the way to #4 on the strength of their most recent album The Suburbs, and TV On The Radio was the other modern artist in the top 10 climbing six spots to land at #6.

Big jumps were made by three bands who released new albums in 2011: Iron & Wine, The Decemberists, and Fleet Foxes. All three bands are also major contenders in this year's Dynammy Awards.

The biggest heatseeker in the top 50 was Shearwater who leaped 167 points to land at #25 on the chart. This was mostly thanks to last year's Dynammy Award winning album The Golden Archipelago which had several tracks in heavy rotation for most of the year. Shearwater has a new album coming in 2012, and the first single Breaking The Yearlings just became the first new song I've added into heavy rotation in 2012, so it remains to be seen whether Shearwater's latest album will have a similar impact on the charts.

And now, without any further delay, here's the chart in its entireity:

39. The Tragically Hip [+1]
40. The White Stripes [-12]
41. R.E.M. [-5]
42. Lucinda Williams [-12]
43. Bruce Springsteen [-6]
44. Dire Straits [-5]
45. The Police [no change]
46. Talking Heads [+8]
47. Beck [-15]
48. The Smashing Pumpkins [+5]
49. Against Me! [+39]
50. Neil Young [-2]

So that's the chart story for artists in 2011, but what about songs and albums?

Looking at the top tracks played is kind of pointless since the list would be very similar to the Song Of The Year nominees for the Dynammy Awards, but I took a look at the top albums played this year and decided to list the top 10, not counting greatest hits collections.

Top 10 Albums
1. Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago
2. Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
3. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
4. The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
5. Chris Isaak - Forever Blue
6. The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You
7. Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean
8. Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold
9. Yaz - Upstairs At Eric's
10. Joe Jackson - Look Sharp

Last year's Dynammy Award winner for best album finished on top of the chart, followed by an old favourite from Lucinda Williams and an album of the year nominee from last year, The Suburbs. The King Is Dead was the highest ranking album from 2011 and the only one to crack the top 10 besides Kiss Each Other Clean, so does that mean those albums are front runners for Album Of The Year? Yes and no. Both albums are nominated, but both albums were released early in the year and had a longer period in heavy rotation. There was no way for an album released in the summer or fall to catch up in terms of airplay, but something like TV On The Radio's Nine Types Of Light might have had a stronger impact on me over a shorter timeframe.

In case you missed it, you can see the bottom half of the Top 100 artists by clicking here.
92. Calexico [+23]
93. The Wailin' Jennys [+32]
94. Yeah Yeah Yeahs [-50]
95. Manic Street Preachers [-21]
96. Soundgarden [-17]
97. Bjork [+60]
98. Black Rebel Motrocycle Club [-12]
99. The Georgia Satellites [+21]
100. The Cave Singers [NEW]

Othet Notables:

108. Cut Copy [NEW]
114. The Kinks [+155]
115. James Brown [+69]
135. The Besnard Lakes [+157]
138. British Sea Power [+118]
177. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings [NEW]
189. Elbow [+286}
198. PJ Harvey [NEW]

The Cave Singers were the highest charting debut artist this year, sneaking into the top 100 on the strength of their outstanding album, No Witch. Cut Copy almost duplicated that feat, finishing at 108 thanks to their album Zonoscope. Both bands have been around for several years now, but 2011 was the year they came to my attention, and I'm pretty sure both artists will be staples in the rotation for years to come.

The biggest leap in the bottom 50 was made by Wolf Parade, who jumped a whopping 419 spots to land at number 66. This was another good year for Dan Boeckner who, in addition to being a part of Wolf Parade, is also the lead singer for the Handsome Furs who will be making an appearance in the top 50.

I'll be revealing the top half of the list on Friday, so check back then for that, and there's still plenty of time to vote in this year's Dynammy Awards for Best Album, Best Song, and Best Sound Quality. Click here to hear all the nominees and then cast your vote.

Dynamic Range Radio Recommends: The Head And The Heart

I've been putting together this year's list of Dynammy Award Nominees and I realized that one album I overlooked this year was the debut from The Head And The Heart. It's a really terrific addition to the folk/rock revival typified by bands like Fleet Foxes, Mumford And Sons, or The Avett Brothers, and I would recommend it for fans of any of the above.

Here's the official video for Lost In My Mind:

And here's a live performance of the two opening tracks from the album, including my favourite on the disc, Couer D'Alene:
These are songs that stop me in my tracks every single time I hear them and get me reaching for the volume control.

AC/DC - It's A Long Way To The Top
Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy
Ashley MacIsaac - Brenda Stubbert
Big Country - In A Big Country
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Vivaldi - Four Seasons - "Summer" - Presto
XTC - I'm The Man Who Murdered Love
Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
Taj Mahal - Leaving Trunk
Big Sugar - Ride Like Hell
The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner

I couldn't find high quality videos for all of these tracks on YouTube so I gave up pretty quickly because, like Nigel, I'm easily distracted by shiny things. So instead of spending hours searching the internet - time that could be better spent rockin' and trying on leather trousers - here's the first and last tracks on the list, which are easily two of the greatest crank 'em to 11 tracks ever recorded.

Here's the official video for the first single, "Born Alone":

I must admit I'd given up on Wilco after their last few albums, but the new one is a real return to form, and a return to the sound and vitality of Summerteeth.

And speaking of Wilco at their peak, here's a terrific live performance of "Monday" from their epic double album Being There.

I've already added about an hour's worth of new tunes to the mix, so people who've tuned in previous years will hear a lot of stuff I've never played before, and I'm still on the hunt for more.

I'm also on the lookout for sponsors this year, so if you have a service you'd like to promote please contact me for details. (johnerle@dynamicrangeradio.ca)

The Halloween broadcast is always a popular event on Dynamic Range Radio, and a sponsor would allow me to promote the broadcast like I did in 2008 when I had more than 10,000 unique listeners on Halloween and ranked in the top 30 of all stations on the ShoutCast network.

If no sponsors come on board I won't have as much time to dedicate to the show as in past years, so I won't be offering any password-protected servers this time around. I probably won't spend much time or money promoting the show either, so the regular servers should be able to handle the extra load. Still, more listeners means more bandwidth I have to pay for so, as always, your donations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also open to the idea of playing the Halloween broadcast earlier if the demand is there. I was thinking of maybe playing it the entire week leading up to Halloween, or Friday to Sunday the weekend before. If you have an opinion on how much or how little of the Halloween broadcast you'd like to hear, just leave a message here or on Dynamic Range Radio's Facebook page.

In the meantime, here's a little something to get you in a Halloween frame of mind. A classic Kids In The Hall sketch which, as far as I know, has no name but probably could have been called "The Devil Went North To Toronto."

First up was Big Audio Dynamite, Mick Jones' first project after he left the Clash, who reunited for a tour in 2011. As far as I know there are no plans to record any new material, so here's a decent quality live video of B.A.D. performing two of their better known songs.

Grade: B+

Big Sugar are one of my favourite Canadian bands of all-time, and Gordie Johnson had recorded several decent albums with his Texas-based side project Grady, so I had slightly higher hopes for this reunion than most, but my general feeling that lightning rarely strikes twice seems to have held true again.

All the pieces of the puzzle are here, but I feel like the inspiration is missing. It's as if Big Sugar's biggest hits were fed into a computer program that spat out Roads Ahead as an amalgam of all the band's biggest successes.

Grade: B-

And finally, here's something I never thought I'd have the chance to say again: Big Country have a new single out. Sort of.

I don't care what anyone says, as far as I'm concerned this new project is not Big Country. The idea of Big Country without Stuart Adamson is akin to Nirvana without Kurt Cobain.

If the surviving members of Big Country want to work with Mike Peters on new material, more power to them, but they shouldn't be using the name. I think this new project would be taken more seriously and would carry a lot less emotional baggage if it were operating under a new name, ala Audioslave or Foo Fighters.

I know there are many Big Country fans, myself included, who will never accept Big Country without Stuart Adamson, and there must be a lot of Mike Peters fans who would much rather see an Alarm reunion.

Grade: C+

(If the band were using a different name I might have given this a B.)

Since Burton Cummings Day isn't catching on just yet, here's something to help you celebrate the old-fashioned, passe holiday some uncool people still refer to as British Columbia Day.

Woodpigeon - In The Battle Of Sun vs. Curtains, Sun Loses And We All Sleep Until Noon

Death From Above 1979 - Black History Month

Bell Orchestre - Throw It On A Fire

Jill Barber - Never Quit Lovin' You

But any time I visit YouTube I usually get sidetracked and it becomes a trip down memory lane, which is why I decided to throw in this bit of obscure 80s cheese, followed by a modern salute to classic fromage

Killer Dwarfs - Stand Tall

The New Pornographers - Your Daddy Don't Know

So in honour of the summer solstice, here's a look back at the songs heard for the first time on Dynamic Range Radio over the past three months. Farewell and good riddance, Spring.

My own set of Rapture tunes will hit the airwaves at approximately noon today, so stay tuned for that. And here's a great apocalyptic song that neither NPR or I was able to work into our playlists.
Doesn't it seem a bit odd that PJ Harvey had never made Dynamic Range Radio's playlist until today? Consider that oversight corrected.

The exact date of my birth remains a mystery, but historians estimate that this glorious event took place in the last week of April in 1972. I was later found set adrift on a piece of birch bark floating down the Miramichi river, wrapped in a piece of newspaper which helped officials roughly estimate my date of birth. Perhaps my mother could have afforded to keep me if she'd had a PayPal account.

If I may be allowed a painful, groan-worthy metaphor, Dynamic Range Radio is my baby, so all birthday presents directed at me will be used to keep the station on the air and prevent me from writing such pathetic sales pitches again.

Here's the single edit of Cut Copy's "Need You Now", which is not my preferred version of the song, but it gives you a taste of what you'll be hearing on Dynamic Range Radio. The album version is a couple of minutes longer, flows more naturally, and has an extended intro that makes this edit feel a bit rushed.
The Telus routing issue is supposed to be solved so everything should be normal after that.

My server provider Stream Solutions came up with a workaround that solved the routing issue affecting Telus users in British Columbia, so Dynamic Range Radio is back on the air.

I really appreciate them coming up with this solution for a problem they weren't even responsible for, and on a holiday no less.

The iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player, and RadioTuna links are all working as I write this, and the ShoutCast player should reset itself shortly.

After the week I've had I'm almost dreading what might pop up tomorrow. Apartment fire? Meteor strike? Zombie apocalypse? At this point, nothing would surprise me.

I woke up this morning to find that I was unable to connect to my servers. The hardware issue I was having this week is not the culprit and my server provider claims everything is working on their end. They can connect to the server but I can't. My internet connection seems to be fine, so all I can guess is that the internet is broken.

** UPDATE** TELUS has confirmed that there is a routing issue affecting customers in British Coulmbia. There is no ETA on when it will be fixed

I've done everything I can think of at this point, so hopefully the issue will resolve itself soon.

I haven't spent much time testing the new hardware so it's possible that problems will return, but I decided the best way to test everything was to start the broadcast and see what happens. If you notice anything that sounds wrong, like songs that appear to missing or awkward segues, try to make a note of what you heard and let me know at johnerle@dynamicrangeradio.ca

And on a final note, a big thanks to Paul for making a donation today even though the station was silent. That was an unexpected surprise and it'll help cover a portion of today's repair bill.
