Here's a live performance from Jimmy Fallon of Frank Ocean's Bad Religion, the much talked about song from his new album "Channel Orange".

This song has generated plenty of buzz simply because the lyrics contain an expression of unrequited love from a young black man to another man.

The hip-hop & R&B community in general has been surprisingly supportive, although people like Stevie Wonder have developed a case of foot-in-mouth disease over the lyrics.

I've had this in heavy rotation for a couple of weeks now, but am just now getting around to mentioning it. This video was the only one I could find on YouTube, and it was posted by some aspiring rapper who added a blaring promo at the end of the video selling beats to hip-hop producers.

Then I found a service called TubeChop that allows you to trim the beginning and end of any video on YouTube, which is a feature that YouTube should offer itself, but that's another matter entirely.

Cameron Crowe's Singles Turns 20

Lately it seems like the sole purpose of the internet is to remind me that I'm old. Case in point: IMDB has informed me that Cameron Crowe's Singles hit theatres twenty years ago today.

It seems like only yesterday I was sitting in the theatre while my date Tracey drooled over Chris Cornell's bare chest and I played Spot The Album Cover during the scene where Campbell Scott showed his record collection to Kyra Sedgwick. "Look! That's a Smithereens album!" (Tracey and I had different priorities.)

Singles is one of those Cameron Crowe projects where the soundtrack tends to overshadow the movie, which I think is unfair. The soundtrack was essential in exposing Seattle bands to a wider audience, but the movie is an excellent relationship dramedy that's well worth seeing, or revisting if you haven't seen it a while. Mr. Sensitive Ponytail Man gives it two thumbs up.

It also served as a warm-up for Almost Famous, providing an insider's look at a struggling young band trying to make it in a music scene that was just about to explode.

And on a personal note, Singles provided me with several sound bites that are used on Dynamic Range Radio. Have you ever heard that one about traffic jams being God's way of saying listen to the radio? That came from Singles, and there are a couple of memorable quotes from Cliff Poncier, played by Matt Dillon, that I've used as well.

I'd like to think that Citizen Dick is still plugging away somewhere, waiting for that big break. Maybe Cliff cut his hair to fit in with modern fashions, and maybe they moved to Belgium to capitalize on their loyal following over there.

With a Soundgarden reunion album set to hit stores this fall, I can't think of a better time to revisit Singles, which is a snapshot of a moment in time that was an important part of my youth.

Staycation Update

The first week of my staycation is alsmost over and so far I haven't experienced anything even remotely like this:

I'm not a greedy man, so I don't need to have five bathing beauties with big 80s hair to consider my vacation well-spent. Two would suffice.

Maybe the fact that I've mostly been relaxing around my neighbourhood and working on Dynamic Range Radio's playlist has prevented me from experincing summer romance or fun in the sun. I also felt lousy and barely left my apartment for the first few days so that didn't help matters any.

The good news for you listeners is that I set myself a target of adding at least fourteen hours of music to the playlist during my staycation. An hour per day is not that difficult when I'm able to dedicate myself to the station full-time, and it hasn't felt like work at all. It's something I haven't had much time to do lately so I'm actually enjoying it. Not as much as I would enjoy spending time with a young Jane Wiedlin, but you can't have everything.

Scientists Analyze The Loudness War

In a new study called Measuring The Evolution Of Contemporary Popular Music, a group of Spanish scientists have confirmed what Dynamic Range Radio's listeners have known for years: that today's popular music is louder than it was in 1955.

I'm reminded of Norm MacDonald's old gag from Weekend Update... yet another groundbreaking study from the pages of the scientific journal "Duh!"

The study also analyses the pitch and timbre of popular music to determine if there have been any changes in the structure and complexity of hit music in Western civilization, and the researchers conclude that popular music has become more homogenized in the past 50 years. At least, I think that's what it says. It's a bit too sciency for my tired old brain to comprehend without spending hours poring over it, so here's a dumbed down recap of the study from the folks at Slate. We all tend to believe studies that confirm what we've always thought to be true* anyway, so that's good enough for me.

*I'm pretty sure there's a scientific name for this phenomenon, but I'm too tired, busy, and lazy to look it up. This is why I'm not a scientist.

Shearwater - Immaculate

A belated thanks to Shearwater for a terrific show this Saturday night at the Media Club here in Vancouver. It was the best show I've seen in years, but I don't get out much so take that for what it's worth.

I complain about the sound quality at live venues even more than I complain about the sound quality of modern albums, but the Media Club had better overall sound than the last show I attended -- British Sea Power at the Biltmore -- and the drums sounded great, even if some of the subtleties were lost on quieter numbers like "Castaways".

The high-tempo single "You As You Were" got quite a reaction from the crowd, as did the hard-rocking number "Immaculate" which, coincidentally, has new official video. This is probably the most accessible, mainstream-friendly track the band has ever recorded -- not that that's a bad thing -- so hopefully this single will help the band play in a bigger venue next time. A sold-out show at the Commodore Ballroom is the least they deserve.

Stereogum's Indie Song Of The Summer Has Horrible Sound Quality

In the Loudness War, 24.68% of Stereogum listeners side with the enemy.

Stereogum recently asked their readers to vote for the the Indie Song Of The Summer and they chose "The House That Heaven Built" by Japandroids, a song with about as little dynamic range as possible.

I wish I could support the band in question here because they're from Vancouver and they do bring a lot of youthful energy to the table, and there's hints of a pretty good song buried under all that noise, but with sound like this it's impossible for me to give them my seal of approval.

Canada Day Playlist - 80s Edition

Canada Day is right around the corner, so I thought I'd put together another Canada Day playlist, pulling the best I could find from YouTube.

I then decided to focus on my favourite Canadian music videos from the 80s, because every time I start searching on YouTube I inevitably find something that sends me on a nostalgic journey into the past.

YouTube is to today's kids what MuchMusic was to me in the 80s, so consider this playlist a tribute to the glory days of The Nation's Music Station, which was MuchMusic's awesome slogan at the time. I wonder if they're still using that one, because it's a slogan I would happily steal.

This playlist includes a few songs that will be familiar to regular listeners of Dynamic Range Radio, but I also included a bunch of rarities that I haven't been able to find anywhere apart from YouTube. There's also a bit of the inevitable 80s cheese that I would feel a bit guilty playing as part of the regular rotation. And because Dynamic Range Radio is an eclectic station, I threw in a couple of modern songs at the end of this playlist that are very much inspired by the sounds of the 80s.

As usual, I apologize for the poor quality of some of these YouTube videos, and the occasional fluctuations in volume. Those are things I avoid on Dynamic Range Radio, so if you're new here I recommend tuning in after listening to this playlist and I hope you'll hear the difference.

Metric - Youth Without Youth

Canadian indie-rockers Metric are back with a new album "Synthetica", and the first single "Youth Without Youth" now has an official video.

If I closed my eyes you wouldn't have a hard time convincing me that this was a long-lost Goldfrapp b-side, but if I closed my eyes I wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing Emily Haines in that revealing outfit. Oh Emily, you're making thing happen in my Hanes. Do I have an off-chance with that corker of a girl?

"Youth Without Youth" may be a misleading title for this song since Emily Haines appears to be ageing without ageing.

A Father's Day Request From My Dad

In honour of Father's Day, here's my Dad's favourite song, "Someone's In The Kitchen With Dinah".

My Father only knew two songs, which he would start singing at random times for no apparent reason. This was one of them, and the other was "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth." I did not inherit my Dad's taste in music, but some of his absurd sense of humour did get passed on to me.

Apparently there are several other verses to the song, but my Dad only ever knew the one, so this is just how I remember it.

Does Mysterious Object In Vancouver Sky Signal End Of Days?

A strange yellow orb has appeared in the Vancouver sky and seems to be emitting light and warmth, causing panic among local citizens and puzzlement in the scientific community.

In the face of such inexplicable phenomenon, many have turned to supernatural explanations and have embraced a piece of local folklore that would normally be dismissed. Ancient legend speaks of a mythical skybeast known as "Tszun" which returns once every hundred years to scald the skin of children and steal their souls.

Tszun, and what appear to tendrils

As Tszun mania grips the city, local alchemists have begun selling a strange concoction known as "Tszunscreen", and scantily-clad members of what is believed to be a Tszunist cult have been seen lying prostrate in the city's parks and beaches, apparently worshipping their god.

Many Vancouver residents have reported that staring directly at Tszun can cause temporary blindness, so experts are advising people to avert their eyes, both as a medical precaution and as a sign of obedience.

The earliest known account of Tszun can be found in the Necronomicon, written by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred some time around 730 AD. Whether Tszun is one of the Elder Gods or perhaps even Cthulhu himself had been a matter of much scholarly debate until the 1800's, when belief in Tszun and the Elder Gods became less prevalent and moved underground.

Despite the possible arrival of Tszun and what this could mean for the fate of the world, authorities are advising people to remain calm and stay indoors, but not everyone is following their instructions.

In one of the poorest East Van neighbourhoods, a half-blind elderly woman who many neighbours had often accused of being a witch emerged from her ramshackle hovel and confronted passersby with what appeared to be an inexplicable incantation: "Hot enough for ya?" She was promptly burned at the stake.

It was a busy week for me adding tracks into heavy rotation, so here's a wrapup of the three different artists you'll be hearing a lot more of over the coming months on Dynamic Range Radio.

The biggest change to the playlist comes from Norah Jones, who has not one but two songs added to heavy rotation. For those who are keeping track, the number of times Norah Jones was played last week: once. The number of times Norah Jones will be played this week: closer to ten. This is the first time I've ever had a Norah Jones song in Heavy Rotation, with both the title track "Little Broken Hearts" and the lead single "Happy Pills" making the cut. Here's a very solid live version of "Little Broken Hearts":

When she burst onto the scene with her soft jazz stylings I was definitely not a fan. I was younger and snarkier back then, so I always used to refer to her as Snorah Jones. I guess I can't do that anymore, but anyone who still hates her is welcome to use that insulting nickname as long as you give me proper credit. Anyway, after watching the video for Happy Pills I have a new nickname for Norah Jones: Ravishing Shankar.

And to put an exclamation mark on my acceptance of Norah Jones as a serious artist, "Miriam" will be a part of this year's Halloween Broadcast, and I've also added her excellent cover of Tom Waits' "Long Way Home".

Next up is Anais Mitchell, who has been around for nearly a decade but didn't achieve the same kind of instant fame as Norah Jones, despite having Ani DiFranco and Bon Iver as two of her long-time supporters. She's actually been performing the song "Venus" live for several years now, but it hasn't appeared on record until her 2012 release "Young Man In America", which was the album that brought her to my attention. There's no official video for "Venus" yet, so you'll have to settle for this live solo version for now, but if I was her A&R man I'd be pushing heavily for "Venus" as the next single. And after that, maybe "Dyin' Day", which I've also added to the playlist.

And finally we have The Walkmen, who are one of those bands I never liked as much as I thought I was expected to. Their style is close enough in spirit to lots of other bands I love, and I've had a few tracks in the rotation before, but nothing of theirs has ever grabbed me quite like "Heaven". After making me sit up and take notice for the first time, maybe this will be the song that helps them break through to a new level of commercial success. I certainly think they deserve it, because there are other excellent songs on the album, such as "Heartbreaker" and "Love Is Luck", both of which will be added to playlist in the near future.

Paste Magazine's Top 60 Albums Of The 60s

Paste Magazine is at it again, with another list sure to create lots of controversy. I'm too young to get worked up about a list like this, but if you share it with the baby boomers in your life it's almost certain to spur some debate and raise a few blood pressures.

As usual, Paste decided to list no more than three albums per artist, which means that even though the Beatles had the number one album on the list and two of the top five, the White Album didn't even make the cut. Shock! Horror!

There's plenty of Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, and Velvet Underground on the list, so I have no real complaints, except that I definitely would have included Fairport Convention's "Liege And Lief" over any of the jazz albums I've never listened to.

Florence + The Machine Cover Talking Heads

Here's a cool little video featuring Florence + The Machine doing an acoustic version of the Talking Heads's "Wild Wild Life" to promote their appearance at Bestival 2012, which is apparently a festival for the restival.

Bestival 2012 takes place on the Isle Of Wight, so it's a little out of the way and I shan't be attending, but there is a pretty cool lineup if you happen to be in the area or you can afford the airfare.

Todd Simko - R.I.P.

Sad news: Todd Simko, guitarist for the Vancouver band Pure, has passed away.

I first heard the band Pure when I was still living in New Brunswick and planning to move to Vancouver. The video for the song "Blast" was getting airplay on MuchMusic's alternative programming, and I distinctly remember driving in my car back home listening to "Blast" and imagining the new life that awaited me on the West Coast. I was moving here to pursue a career in the film industry, and in the same way that The X-Files represented the career I envisioned for myself, Pure came to represent my dreams of the nightlife in a big city full of cool bands and live shows.

Pure were just reaching the peak of their popularity when I arrived in Vancouver, and they were the only band I managed to catch at the legendary Town Pump before it closed down. When their album "Generation Six-Pack" was released it received major airplay on the local rock station CFOX, and Pure were as big as any band of that era to me. When I think of 90s music I still think of Pure long before I think of Nirvana.

Todd Simko's monster guitar sound was a major reason why I loved the band, and I never really understood why they didn't make it big. One thing I've always said about Pure is that if you take their three best singles, Blast, Anna Is A Speed Freak, and Denial, they're as good as any three singles from any 90s alt-rock band.

The news of Todd Simko's death would have made me sad at any time, but I think it's affecting me even more because I heard about it the day before my 40th birthday. I've spent a lot of time these past few weeks thinking about mortality, my lost youth, and wasted opportunities, and Todd Simko's death resonates with everything I've been feeling lately. Todd Simko was never more than a sound in my headphones and a name in the liner notes, but he represented so much more.

Every time a Pure song came up on my iPod or I caught a glimpse of one of their CDs in my collection, I would always think the same thing: these guys should have been huge. I always root for the underdog, and with Dynamic Range Radio I always try to promote artists I believe to be underrated or unappreciated, just like Pure. Why? Probably because I feel underrated and unappreciated myself. I can relate to the Todd Simkos of the world more than the Chad Kroegers or Scott Weilands.

At the end of the day, and the end of his life, all I really know about Todd Simko is that his guitar work and his band meant a lot more to me than a lot of better known artists that made a lot more money. I hope he was satisfied with what he's achieved in life and that he died without too many regrets. And I know that as long as Dynamic Range Radio exists, Todd Simko's guitar will still be reaching people who might not have heard it otherwise.

All my female listeners had a chance to savour Gotye's quivering stomach and pasty thighs in the video for "Somebody That I Used To Know", so it's only fair that the guys should get to enjoy a little eye candy now, because this time it's ladies sporting the body paint.

Boobs, body paint, and a Gibson SG. What more could a guy ask for from a rock video?

It's already been #1 in the UK and in Gotye's native Australia, and now the album, Making Mirrors, is climbing the charts in North America. This song also hugely popular on YouTube, Rdio, Last.FM, and probably every other online service you could name. And now it's soon to be #1 on Dynamic Range Radio.

It's rare for my tastes to sync up with something so popular, but it does happen occasionally, and I'm not too elitist to play a popular hit when it does. But if I hear this song every time I'm buying groceries, riding in someone else's car, or grabbing a slice of pizza, I might get sick of it pretty quickly, and then it might drop off the playlist sooner than most tracks I put in heavy rotation.

Hopefully that won't happen.

It's been a good month for my favourite Irish lasses, with Sinead O'Connor releasing a new album, followed by Dolores O'Riordan reforming with the Cranberries.
