There is some pretty cool news coming out of Nasa and that is that the Phoenix Mars Lander has found Ice on Mars. This is really great news as everyone has always thought Mars had Ice and maybe even liquid water at some time in its past, but now they have actually found proof that the is Ice on Mars. This makes it a lot easier to have man made missions in the future as they can melt the Martian ice to create oxygen.

The scientists have been ecstatic since the discovery as this opens up a lot of possibilities including the possibility that Mars may have once supported life. If they can find definitive proof of life then it will tell us a lot about the origin of life here on earth. Ice on Mars is a fabulous discovery and I can’t wait what they find next.

Steve Jobs announced the eminent release of the iphone 3g to be available July 11th in quite a few countries. The new iPhones — $199 for one with 8GB of storage space, $299 for 16GB of storage should help Apple gain some additional market share as they will become a lot more useful. I’ve thought of purchasing one, but they are currently not available for Verizon and in my area AT&T coverage just sucks. The prices for this version is a good bit cheaper than what the original iPhone cost when it was released. While a lot of people ran out to purchase the original it did not catch on as quick as Apple hoped the iphone would be adopted. One of these reasons was the cost so they are attacking that. The other reason is because its only available to AT&T customers. If Apple wants to get the iphone 3g to be more widely adopted, then they are going to need to offer the iphone with other carriers.

Central to the phone is the company’s TouchFlo 3D interface, which HTC says provides "animated access" to people (by calling, we presume), messaging, e-mail, photos, and more. There’s also a touch pad alongside the screen. Under the hood is the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system.

Overall the installation was fairly painless. I did make a couple of mistakes so I’ll post those gotchas here in hopes  that it may help someone else avoid them.

The first mistake was that we set up a test box to look at the features. Ideally i would have put the test in its own domain, but did not. I always figured I could just un-install it when we went to production, but that did not work out as planned. The main reason was that the public store was replicated from Exchange 2003 and then I could not remove it. Finally wound up fdisking the test install machine, but since the remnants of the Test install was left in AD, this required going into ASDIEdit and manually removing it. I don’t really like doing things in there, but sometimes its required.

Something to keep in mind when setting up a CCR topology with Exchange is to set up your clustered server’s prior to installing Exchange 2007. This is a requirement as you won’t be able to select your active and passive mailbox clusters when you install Exchange 2007 unless you have this setup on the machines.

I set my system up as follows. 2 Clustered Dell 2950’s with 8 gigs of Ram in each and one 1950, for the Hub Transport and Client Access roles. I have not set up Unified messaging yet, but I will probably do that on another machine if i decide we need that functionality.

Really the only bad issue I ran into was getting Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 to pass mail back and forth properly. There was not a lot of information out on the web about this, but we finally got a hold of it. A couple of the problems preventing mail form working properly were:

1. Ensure you do not have a smart host set up to forward all outgoing mail form exchange 2003. This caused an issues where mail would go fine from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2003, but would not go to Exchange 2007 from Exchange 2003 or outside mail accounts. Makes sense once you think about it. The Exchange 2003 server does not have a mail account for the particular user so it send it to the smart host( usually a spam filter or virus wall application) which inturn forwards it back to Exchange since that is where the domain mail is configured to be delivered. This creates a loop.

Another issue I had was multiple NIC’s in my HubTransport. Having two nics enabled was causing a DNS routing issue where mail destined for outside email address could not have the DNS resolved. This really seems like a bug to me as it should have picked up the active card and I selected the active NIC in the HubTransport Internal DNS properties it started forwarding mail correctly.

Once I got this issues corrected then mail started passing correctly and it seems to be fairly stable. I’ve started moving some of my users over to the new box and exploring the many new features. One issue I do have is where to enter the license data for the Enterprise Client Access licenses I purchased. Several features are disabled without adding the licenses I purchased, but I can’t seem to find a location to add them in yet. I guess I’ll have to do some more research in this area.

There are hundreds and sometimes thousands and new viruses and spyware released on the web every month and not having virus protection is just asking for trouble. This will be very interesting to watch.  Of course if their calculations are wrong and the asteroid decides to come towards the earth then we will get a much better view. But I’m pretty sure their calculations are correct and the Martians are in for a bumpy ride.

It will be really interesting see how this pans out for Google. Just to suppose and I have not data on this that perhaps this is a method to fill the void that Google Pages has left. I don’t know about everyone else, but I have not seen a lot of Google pages in the search results. Possibly because the app just does not have a lot of functionality. I have not looked at Google pages in quite a while, but do remember it was not impressive. One of things I did not like was that you could not add any JavaScript code in the pages. If Google would have allowed this and let me put some Adsense code on my Google pages then I may have spent some time creating content for them.

Looks like they are changing this with Google Knols as its reported they will allow the people who create the content for Google Knols to share in the revenue created from that content. This action may actually entice people to create more pages and to spend some time working on this project.
