Despite the massive popularity and lucrative tourism value of mantas, these graceful and gentle giants are rapidly disappearing due to extreme fishing pressure. Much like sharks are mutilated for their fins and rhinos for their horns, rays are mutilated for their gill rakers, which are used by practitioners of Chinese medicine as an unproven “health” tonic.

Mantas and mobula rays, like whale sharks, use these bony, finger-like projections off the gill arch to feed by retaining tiny prey. These gill rakers have an estimated market value of $11 million annually. That is a fraction of the value of Manta and Mobula ray tourism, which is estimated at over $100 million per year, globally.

This shocking fact is largely unknown by the general public or conservationists, but a new report by the Manta Ray of Hope Project; a joint venture of Shark Savers and WildAid, brings light to their endangered plight.

The report, entitled “Manta Ray of Hope: The Global Threat to Manta and Mobula Rays” provides the most far-reaching research ever conducted into both the intensive overfishing of mantas and mobulas as well as the trade in their gill rakers that are driving mantas and mobulas to the point of population collapse.

“If action is not taken quickly, manta and mobula rays will likely face regional extinctions because of unregulated fisheries”, said Michael Skoletsky, Executive Director of Shark Savers. “Anyone who has gone diving with mantas knows them to be intelligent, graceful, and engaging animals. It would be a tragedy to lose them.” A campaign to obtain moratoriums against fishing mantas is under development by the Manta Ray of Hope Project.

Mantas are seen at many of our Freedom Dive Tours destinations, including Cocos Island, Galapagos, Hawaii, Maldives, Alor, Komodo, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Posted via email from dyv.us : Scuba Diving Philippines Manta Rays – the name alone conjures up images of graceful underwater acrobatic creatures soaring along sheer walls or hovering over shallow cleaning stations. These spectacular giants are so popular with divers and snorkelers that a single animal can 'earn' more than $1 million over its lifetime f ...... http://dyv.us

It is a very large resort occupying 5 hectares of land in the small sitio made popular by hot springs on shore as well as under the sea. It is still part of the "Anilao" diving area. This confusing sitio labels of the Municipality of Mabini should be an interesting future post. But for now let's get into our review.

The Place

On their coastline is (not so) Secret Bay dive site (aka Mainit Muck), to the right is Mainit Point, a bit further left is Bubbles. For those familiar with Anilao diving, these are the go to sites when Habagat (westerly, from July to November) intensifies. As of this writing, it is the only resort in Mabini that is facing east, so missing the familiarly beautiful Anilao sunset will hopefully be replaced by a lovely sunrise, for early risers.

The Facility

At its current form, the place can accommodate 200+ people comfortably, with several dozen rooms, 2 salt water pools, a hot spring water pool (about 45 degrees celcius), a well stocked dive shop with nitrox operated by Dive Central, conference rooms, 2 spacious dining areas, a natural sauna, banana boat and ample parking albeit unshaded.
You may do shore dives to Secret Bay and Mainit Point further saving on boat costs. Buffet, set or a la carte meals are available.

The Good

Rooms, pools, activity options, diving choices are quite good.

The Bad

The shoreline is littered with boats, although this is common in Anilao. A strong Amihan (easterly, from December till June) can make shore dives a little trickier.

The Conclusion

I enjoyed my stay at Sea's Spring resort, if you like macro underwater photography, shore muck dives to Secret Bay is a no brainer. For the photographer diver with kids it will seem like paradise.

Call Freedom Dive Tours
