I am so excited to finally tell you about my latest release!
insert drum roll here.....
Inkspirations Fruit of the Spirit: Coloring Designs to Nourish You with Love, Joy, Faith, Peach and More. / Adult Coloring Book

Can you be humbled and proud all at the same time? It was an honor to get to work on such a fantastic project with HCI Publishing, and especially using God's word as my guide! Coloring books are so big right now and standing out from the rest is the key. More than not, the adult coloring books out there are filled with clipart and extremely generic overall. I do hope this one stands out!

Each page is designed and created around a specific Scripture, using the 'fruits of the spirit' as the premise. The Bible speaks of visible "fruits of the spirit" as characteristics of a Christian...the attitudes, behaviors and traits that someone who believes in Jesus Christ should show. My hope is that while spending time with each page, relaxing and enjoying the process of coloring you reconnect with God and His word.

Well, I learned so much while working on these pages and I look forward to future projects.
(pssst....I might already be working on one, just sayin'. I'll update soon). I am also looking forward to finding these in person in the stores (WalMart, for one, purchased quite a large order). How cool will that be. So cool.

A lot has been happening around here. School is out for Hannah and Nathaniel, so our daily schedule has changed quite a bit. Trying to keep those 2 busy is a job in itself! I've had some job changes so new doors are opening and I am looking forward to all that lay ahead. In the midst of it all, I've had a chance to play with some new pieces and pick up my watercolors again. I always seem to forget how much I love watercolors.

I've kept most of these pieces small (5x7) so that I could work on different styles and designs without committing to anything too large yet. I am still having such a hard time committing to just one medium or one style. I absolutely love, love, love them all! I couldn't even claim a favorite color if I tried. Do most artists go through this? It is so hard to market what I do with such a wide-ranged style. As a graphic designer I often have to produce a specific style according to the clients requests, so I am used to creating a different 'look' from one job to another. I guess that's where some of this comes from, but really, I have always been this way. Is it a curse or a blessing? I'll just keep creating what is in my heart and God will take care of the rest!

Time just goes by much too fast around here. I'm sure you're familiar. Kids, teaching, work, art projects, home projects....well, LIFE! Blog-time has suffered though I have to confess....I have really become quite enamored with Instagram and well, that's where I've been instead. Is that a bad thing? Feeling a little guilty for not being here, too. So let's catch up a little....

Hannah and Nathaniel are always keeping me on my toes. They are growing so fast and silly as ever. They are both Scouts and school keeps them extra busy, too. We've even worked in a few adventures in the midst of it all. Gotta slip in some fun to balance it all out!!

Big-Eyed Fish, Acrylic, 24" x 24"

On my end, in-between the teaching and work, I have been able to get some projects started and completed.....commission pieces and works for inventory. This little guy I started back in 2011, I think. 2011!! For some reason I never finished his eye and the poor guy just sat there year after year while other projects were started and completed. Crazy!! 2015 was the year to give him an eye...and so I did!! I like him. He's quirky and bright and colorful. Fun!!

String Art Elephant, Gift for Hannah

String art. What fun! I don't think I've done one of these since high school. My photos aren't great but the thread is metallic silver and the wood is stained the most iridescent plum color. Very pretty and best of all, Hannah loved it.

I've worked on lots of vintage bible and book pages and still need to photograph them all. Once I do, I will post those. This one I had started of Daniel in the Lions Den received so much attention and requests that it made me come to realize I really needed to consider prints for the bible pages. I didn't think it was something I was going to consider, but I am definitely rethinking that original idea. So much to think through when you are trying to develop your business.

So many more projects to show you, but will have to wait for another day.

It is amazing how your life can change so quickly. So unexpected. The last several years have been such a long road of twists and turns for me, my family, my career, my art...and then out of the blue, or so it seems, it all changes. Something that changes your entire professional future which in turn changes all the rest! This road has felt bumpy and unpaved just too many times. A road that truly didn't feel like it was leading anywhere...and then you turn a corner and you stand before an amazing field of fantastic! and everywhere I turn is filled with even more fantastic! But God already knew. He knew the plans He had for me. He had already prepared this road for my life long before I even knew the road existed.

One more reminder in my life to TRUST HIM!!!

Such an abundance of beauty we are all surrounded by....our glorious Nature! A gift given to us by God. To love. To appreciate. To take care of. "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it" Genesis 2:15

Almost daily, when I am sitting in my studio, I can look out of my window and watch the numerous birds frolicking within the trees and grass, singing songs that I am certain are meant for me only. What a blessing to have these beautiful birds...bluebirds, cardinals, finches, woodpeckers and more...stop by to visit my back yard. Meanwhile, gorgeous butterflies and dragonflies fill the air. How can you not be inspired by it all?

Some days, your leaves (or your life) needs some serious color! I have had a few of those days for sure, as I am sure many do. Color is so powerful. One color alone, or specific color combination, can create mood or stir emotion, recall a memory, it can even change your heart rate. Truly amazing!

Some days I feel like I need ALL the colors! As many as possible. I love them all. I want them all. xo

I have been creating artwork on vintage book pages for a very long time now and have recently been adding to the collection, almost daily. I have always been in love with old or vintage books and papers and years ago when I came upon a few vintage books that were falling apart with missing pages, I knew I was going to bring them back to life using my artwork. Using vintage book pages is nothing new in the art world these days, but you will often find them used with something printed on top of them, versus an original piece of artwork. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to create something that was unique, original, beautiful, accessible, and affordable. On the creating end, I could take a limited amount of supplies with me (like I often do with ACEO's) so I could work on them almost anywhere. Working on the Bible pages have especially been rewarding for me lately, allowing me to spend even more time in the Word. It's a win-win!

No matter how often I engulf myself in paints, brushes, fabrics, papers, or a universe of color and textures....I always find my way back to pen and ink. Black and white. Simple. Clean. Precise. Detailed. Meditative.

I have always doodled or used patterns in my inky art and although I still combine pen and ink with paints, colored pencils and ephemera, I will always love the beauty and high-contrast of black and white using pen and ink. These are some of the pen and inks from my Moleskine from recent. Forgive the poor photo quality.

Exploring I have been. And I do love where this is taking me. Oh, the colors! It's amazing how a color can change the way you feel. Can set a mood. Love it!

This little guy makes me happy. Something about his face. His surroundings. The colors. I loved the process of building it all. I put the brush down, once again, and used my fingers mostly and all kinds of objects. It's not a new process for me, using lids from bottles or jars, bubble wrap, crumbled papers, tubes, old gift cards...anything I could find that would add dimension, depth, design. It is such a freeing process and I am especially enjoying this continued exploration. I am especially enjoying painting objects and characters of nature lately. I always have, really, but especially now. So peaceful. There is so much beauty to be found in nature. Can't wait to see what I find next.....

I was just reading through my posts and realized soooo much has occurred since I last posted here. Too much, really, to be able to catch everyone up completely. How about a quick overview...we moved (always so much work!), school started for the kids, participated in a little art show that I almost sold out of everything I brought (it was exhilarating!), sold every single wearable art handbag I talked about over the past several posts (They were a big hit! Getting ready to paint and sew up some more!), I started a fantastic job with Wine and Canvas where I get to teach groups of people to paint while we sip wine, eat, sing and just have the best of time (I love it!), and among other things, I found time to paint and create!!

'Elephant Majesty' Acrylic 20"x20"

I really loved working on this elephant. Well, I always love working on whatever I am working on at any given moment. It's like falling in love...over and over and over again. The mystery of the blank canvas. The excitement of the blank canvas. The first touch of paint to the surface. The textures. The colors. Explorations. Transformations. The growth. The comfort. The building of layers until something amazing transforms. It becomes you. How can I not want to experience that all the time, right?

This year I am trying to work differently than I have in the past. Working on getting out of my comfort zone. Loosen up. Paint from deep inside. I also want to take my work away from my studio. Go to the park. To the Slough. Change my surroundings. I know these things will take me places I don't even realize yet. For my elephant painting, I put the paint brush down through most of it and my hands became my main instrument. I loosened up and just 'experienced' the painting at a different level than I have been used to. Get that type A personality out of the room and experience the process, the birth of the elephant, the colors, the layers. I didn't want to lose my style, my techniques. But I wanted to experience something new. I have had a lot of positive feedback and inquiries, so I guess I am heading in the right direction. It's exciting.

I have several more to post and I promise..I really, really promise....to post those over the next few days.

These earrings I started quite some time ago and for one reason or another, just never got around to completing them. I finished quite a few and these are just some of them. There are many more in my Etsy shop now. I wish I had taken photos of the process though. They start out as a watercolor. Nothing specific. Just a collection of beautiful merging colors and shapes. Then I add layers of vintage book pages onto the backs of the watercolor paper.

For all of these earrings, I used pages from a beautiful vintage bible that I found years ago that had most of it missing and was completely falling apart. I really think it adds to the beauty of these tiny pieces of art. Next, I start cutting the paper into specific shapes. I try to match up pieces that have similarities in color once they are cut. Then I get to add pen and ink work to them. I love this part. The watercolors and shapes of the paper tend to dictate my design and essentially I have no idea what I am going to draw until I see the colors and designs from the watercolors. When all is said and done, I add layers of thick, clear, archival safe resin. Of course, this isn't where it all ends. Nope! The final stage is adding the jewelry findings and embellishments.
Whew! That's a bunch of steps.

No two earrings are alike. They are delicate, yet sturdy and they have such beautiful movement when worn. Photos just never do justice. My confirmation though, was when my 14-year Hannah told me..."Mom, these are sooo cool. I love these! Will you make me some?"

I have been working on numerous projects around here in the midst of...well, Life! One of the newest projects is wearable art in the form of shoulder bags. I have created these types of bags for years and years, and have even created a few of these styles for a little boutique here locally. So now, it's my turn!

One of the things I have wanted to do for a while now is incorporate my actual art into the piece. Something simple, fun, unique, impressive...all wrapped into one. I finished about 25 shoulder bags so far and will start posting them here and adding them to my Etsy shop over the next week. Sadly, my camera has decided to break down, so getting the images completed has been a fiasco. Keeping faith though! A good camera is in my future!! Amen!

Each bag is crafted from scratch using mostly repurposed or upcycled fabrics and other fiber materials, beads and buttons (mostly vintage), and visible freeform and hand stitching. If the bag has artwork attached, I painted that separately on a lightweight muslin and attached that to the piece, allowing and adding further imperfections and artful tattering to enhance the personality of each piece. The final bag ends up a wearable piece of art that is sure to turn heads! I do hope you like them and stay tuned...there are many more to be posted and listed!

As life sometimes presents itself, there have been some tough times around here lately and I have just tried to stay positive and keep faith through it all! and know that through it all...I AM BLESSED! Today? Tough day! In the midst of my work and updates, I thought I would check to see if I could find out when the publish date was for a book I was asked to contribute to a few months ago and to my surprise...

...I AM THE COVER ARTIST!! This was a complete surprise to me! I fell to my knees and cried...and cried...and cried!! What an honor!!! and just one more Blessing and confirmation that God is working in my life and all that He has Blessed me with. This is the only piece I can confirm so far, but there are at least a couple others that will be included inside the book. The book will be available ~~November 1, 2013~~ late September 2013 and apparently available in all the usual places; Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. You can find out more here and here for starters. It's so exciting! Sometimes your day changes and you just feel like shouting from the rooftops!!

There are actually a couple other recent publications that have occurred in my life and will post those very soon, too. Stay tuned....I'm back!! :)

My Son Nathaniel

I have tons of artwork still to post...and it's coming, I promise! But I had to stop for a moment and just post this adorable photo of my son Nathaniel. There was no school on Monday (10-15) and when my little guy came downstairs, this was the outfit he had put on! Biker shirt, Cub Scout bandana, 'phone' (doesn't work) with phone case, MP3 player, sunglasses and finished off with the Tat Sleeves. I don't think you could get any cuter than this!

I have missed you. I have been here the entire time, but my life got a little crazy for a while and unfortunately, my blogging world is what suffered so nothing else would. But, I promise to never let that happen again. Promise! Well, lets see. When your weeks are filled with appointments, of every kind, it can be quite difficult to create...and that's the way it has been these past few weeks. Whether it has been for me or the kids, I just have not been at my studio to create for a good portion of every day. No fear! These are the times that I especially work on ACEO's. I have a great little carry case (as seen here in this post) that holds almost everything I need to get ACEO's started (and many times finished). So, while waiting in waiting rooms, at the park, or wherever, I can pull out my supplies discretely and work on an ACEO. The kids even know to make sure, before we leave the house, that I have my carry case with me. I don't leave home without it!

The pre-prepped watercolor cards are often great inspiration and they are perfect for backgrounds to the multi-layered pieces, too. Oh, how I love the this little thing called an ACEO!

the journey of growth

Direction. Diversity. Dilemma. Decisions. Growing! Growth is good. And for me lately, a bit challenging. For some time now, quite a while actually, I have been struggling to 'find' my artistic me. To hone in on what is my strength, my passion, my style. Who I really am as an artist.

It's time to GROW.

I am torn. As an artist, while I work on one medium or style, I am dreaming about another. I can't wait to try a new technique or color combination. Creating for me is like dinner. Many foods. Many ways to prepare them. I just don't want the same meal every single night. But yet, I love it all. This is my dilemma. And this can be critical when you want your work to be recognized as your own. I have numerous pieces of work, in all styles and mediums, at Green-n-Groovy a local gallery downtown and Lisa, the owner, tells me all the time that patrons are shocked and amazed when they come across my tags, realizing that they were all created by the same artist. Yet, I sell pieces from every collection of work. Advantage or detriment? They like the work, they buy the work, but do they know my name?

I create because I have to. It is who I am. I am not an artist that will ever only work in one medium or one style. I experience just as much excitement with a palette full of color as I do with a palette limited to only black and white. Choosing one material or craft or technique would be like choosing only one of my children. It is impossible to choose. I love them all. I have spent the past year or so really reading and studying many other artists and their work. Examining the diversities, the successes, the many aspects of working as a professional artist. 'Don't rely on income from only one source'. 'Create a recognizable style that becomes your own'. 'Brand yourself'. 'Create what you love'. 'Don't limit yourself'.....and a partridge in a pear tree (hmmm, just thought of a design idea...oops, sorry...back to what I was saying). Growth sure does make my head hurt!

Ultimately, there are some things that will have to change. I have to make, perhaps, some difficult decisions in both creative and business areas of my life. It is imperative that, as an artist, I do NOT forsake anything that fills my creative cup. As a business woman, it's time to establish a specific artistic business plan and commit to it.

I'm ready!

I am still working through the many details and I know limiting myself could be dangerous, too. I don't want that. I also know that I need to hone in on my strengths, determine what sells, what could reach a wider range of customers/clients, what could expand into larger venues, etc., etc. Whew! and Egad! So be forewarned, you will start seeing some changes around here, some restructure, some redesign, less of some work, more of others (perhaps combining mediums and styles), probably even some test runs here and there. I want to go where everybody knows my name. I look forward to feedback, too. Inquiring minds want to know. Giveaways and interviews are also things I have wanted to implement for some time now. Check. It's on the list. I feel like this is the first day of the rest of my successful creative life! How exciting is that? It's very exciting! Now let's get this party started....

changes are upon us

Change is good! Right? Well, around here, everything seems to be changing lately, and at warp speed!

My beautiful Hannah just had her 12th birthday and I swear it was just yesterday when I brought her home from the hospital. I know I'll still be saying that when she's 22, but for now I am in utter shock that she is already 12. I am watching her become a young lady...scary and beautiful all at once.

And then there's Nathaniel, my little man! 6 going on 26! He's graduating from Kindergarten this week, and as it looks, will be heading to 2nd grade. I am really going to have to get a new pair of roller skates to keep up with these guys. I really didn't know I could love anyone so much! They are my life.

For Hannah's sleepover birthday party, I had purchased some air drying modeling clay that I thought would be fun for the girls (6 of them) to create some little sculptures, pendants, etc with the clay, and then paint them the second day. Well, let's just say that when you get six 12-year-old girls together for a sleepover, getting them to sit still for a 'project' is a bit hit-and-miss. I missed! No biggie, more for me. It's been a while since I had played with the clay and it didn't take long before I was HOOKED...again! I sculpted several little figures and the owl is the only one finished so far. I am not exactly sure what I am going to do with him though. Thought I might turn him into a brooch or pendant, or some sort of mixed media piece, maybe. I have some 3.5"x3.5"canvas covered blocks I made a while back that might be fun to add the head and paint in the rest of the body on the canvas. Hmmmm. Many choices, but one thing for sure is...I LOVED making these. I LOVED working with the clay again. I so feel some changes happening.

This little painting I did last week. I have wanted to create a series of 'boudoir' pieces, of sorts, for a while now...like purses, shoes, lipstick, etc. I added the gold leaf which I think really makes it pop and interesting, too. I also have some fun ideas for the kitchen as well. So many ideas, 24 hours in a day....what's a girl to do?

And here is one more. A painting that I have been working on this past week that isn't finished yet. He is much bigger, 20"x20". The Bug-Eyed ACEO from my last post actually inspired this piece and I am considering some new ideas, so we'll just have to wait to see how it gets finished. I don't have the photos ready, but I have some pen and ink/watercolors to show you, too. It's been a busy, messy week and it really shows in my studio. My mind feels a little messy lately, too. Ultimately, I think I am headed for some CHANGE...but I will have to talk more about that next time. See you then......

Just a quick post of a new ACEO. I did this one recently using my layered technique; one layer in watercolor, one layer in pen and ink, with the pen and ink cut out and adhered to the watercolor. I really think he is so cute!
