A Good Business Doing Good for Others

A successful business provides a service or product that expertly fills a specific need in the marketplace. The trick then, for entrepreneurs, is identifying the right product or service, for the right space at the right time. April Glavine is one example of an entrepreneur who did just that.

Alarmed at the increasing obesity rate in Canada, April felt a call to do something to improve the health of her community. After careful consideration, inspiration struck and she aimed her sights on school vending machines. She recognized a need in the vending industry to provide nutritional snacks, and Lean Machine Healthy Vending was born. Focusing its attention on products that are Registered Dietitian Approved, and distributing them in a format that is both accessible and affordable, Lean Machine has grown from one location to a full-fledged and thriving business.

Of course, with business growth comes growing pains and all too often, burnout for the owner who’s giving too much of themselves to the business. In this interview with us, April talks about how reading The E-Myth Revisited helped her change her thinking and embrace a whole new way of doing business.

In this interview with us, April talks about how reading The E-Myth Revisited helped her change her thinking and embrace a whole new way of doing business.</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>e,myth,emyth,small,business,michael,gerber,coaching,entrepreneur,management,marketing,business,advice,business,success</itunes:keywords>

Did you know that your chances of obtaining business financing can increase by more than 250% if you have good business credit? The problem for many business owners is that they think that just because they're in business, they're automatically building the good business history required to get credit. Not necessarily so.

This week we invited E-Myth business partner Trent Lee to join us for a discussion about financing your business. Lee's company, Corporate Credit Concepts, specializes in helping business owners and entrepreneurs smartly obtain lines of cash credit to launch, operate and grow their businesses.

This week we discuss the fourth topic in Built to Sell: not accepting projects/work outside of your standard service offering. When you focus on too many things, it’s hard to do one thing really well. If your business is too fragmented and you serve too many markets, you end up devaluing your business. An acquirer may see your weakness, and decide instead that it's better for them to start a competing business in a niche that you’re not serving well. Or, if they are interested in your business, they may offer you a lower overall price because they only see value in a certain area of your business.

2 Tips to Increase Business Value

Even if you have no immediate plans to sell your business, it's never too soon to start building your company's value. Doing so will not only help you in the long term (if you're depending on the sale of your business to fund your retirement or your next venture), it will also help you create a thriving and revenue generating business right now.

This week we continue our podcast series with exit planning expert and author, John Warrillow. In his book Built to Sell, John outlines the eight steps he says are critical to creating a sellable business. Two of those steps are the topic of our podcast discussion this week. First, we go in-depth into the importance of reducing the amount of operating cash your business requires so that you can maximize the amount of cash an acquirer will pay you. Then we discuss what to look for and how to hire the right sales team.

Continuing our discussion with author and entrepreneur John Warrillow, this week we dive into the first of the 8 steps he recommends toward creating a sellable company: creating a standard service offering.

For those of you familiar with E-Myth, this one will come as no surprise… When you create a standard service offering, you find a service your clients value and that you can teach someone else to perform. In other words, you create a high value, turn-key operation with documented systems and a way of doing business that isn’t dependent on you — the owner — to run.

This week's podcast is about a topic that is top-of-mind for a lot of business owners right now: funding.
E-Myth Seminar Leader and Keynote Speaker Karin Iwata interviews Paul Bozzo, of 10X Consulting Group which specializes in helping companies who are seeking private equity or debt financing.

Whether it’s for start up capital, expansion needs, or working capital, chances are good that if you’re a business owner (or plan to be one) you have looked for financing.

This podcast will help you better understand the financing options available to you and give you some of the smart strategies you can use right now.

Some people start a business because they're passionate about a particular cause and they want their business to have an impact. Some people start a business because they are looking for a better work/life balance. Some are simply looking for more freedom...

This is what Michael Gerber spoke of when he coined the term, "The Entrepreneurial Seizure." For most people, having your own business is about being your own boss, having freedom and making your own money. But one thing people often don't consider is the idea that a business -- at it's best -- should serve as a financial asset today and in the future.

Have you thought about what your business needs to look like in order to provide you with the passive income to live the life you truly want? Do you have an exit strategy that will allow you to sell your business for top-dollar?
