New Trends in Research Funding - Threat or Opportunity for Interdisciplinary Gender Research?

Abstract of article in Nora, Nordic Journal of Women's Studies, on Research Funding by Suvi Keskinen a; Harriet Silius a (Show Biographies) from the Institute of Women's Studies, Åbo Akademi, Finland:

"Both at Nordic and European level, public research funding is taking new forms. In this article we identify some new trends and ask which consequences they could have for interdisciplinary research, especially for studies on gender. Based on data gathered in an on-going EU research project on interdisciplinarity and the integration of Humanities and the Social Sciences, we discuss the Nordic situation in comparison to some European countries which are part of the project. We argue that the new trends are contradictory and ambiguous. We explore what happens to disciplinary divisions in the emerging new structures. In a tentative conclusion we suggest that the European streamlining of research funding in combination with a demand for large-scale co-operation are possible threats to small interdisciplinary fields like feminist research. While disciplinary boundaries on a structural level seem to dissolve, they are maintained in application and evaluation practices. Research programmes focusing on interdisciplinarity and themes within feminist research might instead be opportunities." - Link

Gender Jobs @ the UN

The UN uses a system called Galaxy for the organisation-wide recruitment co-ordination. Sadly it doesn't have an RSS feed but you can register as a user and get notified when new vacancies arise.

Global Voices is "a non-profit global citizens’ media project founded at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, a research think-tank focused on the Internet’s impact on society." It is available in a host of languages including: English - Bangla - Spanish - French - Portuguese - Chinese (Simplified) - Chinese (Traditional).

"Global Voices seeks to aggregate, curate, and amplify the global conversation online - shining light on places and people other media often ignore."

We've just added their Gender Headlines feed to the right hand column... If you have a blog, you can easily do this too.

Another linked initiative is the Human Rights Video Hub which is slated for launch in the near future with the following goals:

Provide the only global online destination for video content specifically related to human rights violations;

Provide tools so people can educate and motivate others to act to end human rights violations and create community around their issues;

Provide a unique online resource for human rights activists, citizens, journalists, and others to access information, resource footage for news stories, and get engaged;

Help deter and reduce human rights violations through community-enabled advocacy using visual imagery as a catalytic force.

This blog was inspired by the lessons learnt from the Brazilink Foundation e-Intelligence Programme for Academics. They have a page on gender, edited by Dr. Teresa Sacchet from the University of São Paulo, which you can find here: http://www.brazilink.org/gender.asp
