Sometimes size matters, and sometimes it doesn't. While at INTEROP 2013, I ran across a new computing platform called a 'modular computer'. This ingenious little powerhouse is the size of a grapefruit with the horsepower of a full size rack mounted 'pizza box'. I was able to sit down with David Politis, Xi3's Chief Marketing Officer to discuss this revolutionary platform that is as much at home at work, or in a police car or ambulance. With NENA i3 extending connectivity out to the field, snd originating endpoint, I think the 08-003 ALDR and ALCDR have found a place to live!

WCAX Channel 3 in Montpelier, Vermont ran a story this past week highlighting a problem with schools and the states 911 system. In a recent interview, Rep. Joan Lenes (D-Shelburne) stated that the House and Senate Committees just recently learned that many of the states schools telephone systems have recently been centralized according to their town or district. This has caused a problem for E911 calls from the schools. But there is a law in VT that addresses this, isn't there?

Also, getting the data to the PSAP can be problematic as disparate system deployments could confuse instead of assist, or create a false sense that data is being provided when it is not. Is a new standard of application connectivity required to manage all if the BIG DATA that will now be available?

The National 9-1-1 Education Coalition has selected "Be 911 Ready" as the 2013 campaign theme for the National 911 Education month starting on Monday, April 1. Where are you right now? Could you tell 9-1-1 exactly where to find you? One of the first things that you will be asked by a 9-1-1 call taker is to provide the location of the emergency that your reporting. The call taker may not automatically know your location, or they may be asking you to confirm it. Always be aware of your surroundings, and tell the call taker the location of the emergency, or if you don't know describe it by providing landmarks such as cross streets mileposts or unique geographic surroundings. Your corporate telephone system, or PBX, may not be reporting your proper location.

BREAKING NEWS: FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who has served the Federal Communications Commission since his appointment by President Obama in 2009, announced on Friday March 22, 2013, that he will be leaving that position "in the coming weeks;" confirming a rumor that had surfaced earlier in the week in Washington DC. The commissioners five year term would have been over in July of this year. President Obama is expected to make his nomination known soon, then send to Congress for confirmation.

Probably the biggest cause of 911 misdials is the proverbial "butt dial" where users accidentally hit the speed dial sequence for 911 on their mobile phone while in their pocket. Enterprise PBXs are also a common source of calls to 911 when the user didn't intentionally plan on making that call. The problem here is that in many cases the PBX doesn't report station level caller ID, or if it does, in many cases the carrier will overwrite that information with the main billing telephone number.

However, In the case of an MLTS PBX, the callback may not be so simple as quite often the number presented to the PSAP may not be the actual number of the caller. The caller from Chevron, calmly stated the problem, a fire, and the location, crude unit number four. Unfortunately this meant nothing whatsoever to the 911 call taker. 911 call takers are paid to answer 911 calls. Not to decipher what "crude unit number four" means from a location perspective. This is exactly what I was talking about in my podcast last month Cube 2C 231 means just about as much as "I'm wearing blue socks."

Based on the responses of the original notice of inquiry, it is "unquestionably feasible for manufacturers of MLTS to include within those systems the capability to identify location of a 911 caller with sufficient precision to support an effective response." It was also noted that comments by Verizon as well as the California Public Utilities Commission both supported this claim in their responses.
