It is Friday afternoon in Weston-super-Mare and the place is heaving. Usually, come September, this Somerset seaside town is winding down as the summer revellers depart, the pier empties and the ice-cream sellers shut up shop.

But the town, once the du jour destination for Edwardian holidaymakers and which, like many such resorts, can evoke an air of faded glory, has experienced a renaissance this past month – and it is all thanks to Banksy.

I had a really good tofu and noodle thing with fennel and small tomatoes. Really small tomatoes. And then this burger, of course.

Generally, how do you find the food at Glasto?
Really good. I think there’s some other festivals that should have a look at Glastonbury and Field Day. Some of them feel stuck in a bygone age.

It’s been a year since we covered Jungle, at this very festival, and they’re sounding just as good. That doesn’t mean they sound incredible, though. Their set of slick, funk-tinged pop still flatlines midway through, but begins and ends with the sort of pumping energy that first helped them slip from obscure and mysterious buzzband to real-deal group.

A tiny B-girl breakdancing during their opener earns cheers as loud as those bellowed for their breakout single Busy Earnin’ – make of that what you will. All band members throw themselves into the set, often looking as serious as a couple of lads performing open-heart surgery, but when they let rip (and smile), the crowd laps it up.

Better known as “Featuring Mary J Blige”, all those rap ego sessions that hip-hop’s favourite soul sister has wailed along to over the years seem to have rubbed off. “I ain’t saying that I’m the best, but I am the best,” she declares, sassily opening her first ever “Glastonberry” set with The One. But she’s not really. Though undeniably much loved by Pilton’s sizeable Smooth FM set, her brand of innocuous poolside soul, Prada rapping and extended romantic advice lacks the unifying anthems needed to make her this year’s Dolly.

Some tracks from her UK-recorded London Sessions album appear to have absorbed some urgent metropolis beats and Disclosure samples during their stay, but no one wants the four-song, new-album hard sell in a downpour. A cover of U2’s One and an impassioned, fist-pumping No More Drama leaves her in tears and on her knees, though it seems scant pay off.

With the rain still falling 15 minutes before showtime there was a paltry crowd for the Congolese massive, but by the time it had eased completely the band were in full flow and a rapidly growing audience fell in thrall to them. The 12-piece outfit went hard and they went deep, serving up tunes from their albums In the 7th Moon, the Chief Turned Into a Swimming Fish and Ate the Head of his Enemy by Magic, and Beware the Fetish. Even their producer Vincent Kenis fretting at the back couldn’t dispel their ebullience. No doubt the jungle cat sporran on display was also a Glastonbury one-off.

Plucked by me out of our tote bag of mystery bands were Juck Juck Grunzie, whose name suggested anything from glitchcore insanity to crusty hurdy-gurdy folk – but actually turned out to be a female Korean psych-rock band (with a bloke on skins). The songs could probably have done with more hooks and structure, and were mostly a series of sections shunted together – shouted vocals, wind-tunnel guitar, niftily intricate basslines. But at least they were dressed in very chic get-up. The heavens opened up during their set, but closed again, and thanks in part to the singer yelling “COME OVER HEEEEEEEERE” the audience swelled, with plenty of be-shorted dads air-drumming by the end.

I appear to have drawn not so much the short straw of Friday’s Band Tombola but the ludicrously long one. The Hessle Audio Boat Party is an outdoor, afternoon-long DJ extravaganza held on the foredeck of HMS Wow, jutting from the side of a tent in Silver Hayes. Sadly the gods of Having to Review Mary J Blige, Looking Like It Might Piss Down and Other Shit to Do Frankly have combined to prevent me staying for the entire four-hour DJ stint from Ben UFO, Pangea, Pearson Sound and Joy Orbison, but the half-hour I do catch is a crowd-drawing throb of glitchy deep dub, space house, crunchy New York krautronica and bits that sound like Chic trapped in a tumble dryer. It is, however, the sort of stuff that’s soundtracked every blanket sale at Glastonbury since 1992, so no points for originality. And my heart goes out to the guy in the Black Flag T-shirt eating celery.

Glastonbury, a place of enlightenment. A spiritual haven. A platform for career-defining sets. One aspect of the event that is rarely commented on is its amassing of the world’s most eclectic hat collection, however. I stand surrounded by sequined top hats. Beaten up wicker hats. Bucket hats. Sun hats. Cowboy hats. Those pink plastic hats people wear on hen parties. But there’s only one hat people are interested at 1.30pm on the Pyramid stage, and that’s James Bay’s trademark wide-brimmed fedora.

As the rain sporadically falls throughout the Hertfordshire twentysomething singer’s set, he draws a massive crowd for a performance that’s full of conviction and cocksure crooning. A sombre selection of songs fill his set, the kind of sincere, hugely successful guitar-driven pop that’s been peddled by the likes of Ed Sheeran, only dustier and bluesier; and with his chiselled good looks and lank hair he’s almost like a one-man Kings of Leon.

Gwilym has been over to the Park to see a band with one of the worst names at Glastonbury:

If Glasto lineups were decided by terrible band names alone, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard would be somewhere near the top of the Pyramid stage bill (though they might be forced to cede the headline slot to the charmingly monikered Fukrag McGinty). As it is, the seven piece have to settle with an early afternoon slot playing to the sore heads and bleary eyes of the Park stage. No matter, their wild stew of psych, drone, motorik and surf rock, all rattled out at breakneck pace and at a punishing volume, is enough to jolt anyone out of their stupor. KGATLW aren’t ashamed about their love of a 10-minute jam, and there are plenty of those here, but it’s all done with such playfulness – flute solos, sweet, childlike melodies – and such power that you can’t fail to be engrossed, and even a mid-set rain shower can’t dampen their fervour, as well as the crowd’s.

Bliss Zion were the opening act on the shanty town-styled Blues stage and they turned out to be a prim-looking dub producer (I’m guessing she’s from Bristol, she’ talked about it a lot) who sang over some of the songs she played. This is music to “unwind” to, she said, and – to her credit – her slow, spaced-out dub looked as if it had almost defeated a crowd of people who seemed determined to dance to literally anything.

Who will replace the second headliner at tonight’s Pyramid stage? Some say it may be Blur, others Bastille. But here’s a curveball for you: could it be pop megagroup One D? Two members have been spotted at the side of stage during James Bay’s lunchtime set – one of which was Niall and next to him a mass of brown curls, meaning that both Louis and Harry could be nearby too. Not Liam. Unless he was wearing a wig? Who knows, but whatever happens, Glastonbury will be filled with giddy girlish shrieks.

Earlier this month, a video appeared online of the Cribs playing their first-ever festival: a charmingly shambolic show that didn’t exactly suggest stages this size would await in the future. Yet here they are, with Ryan Jarman – dressed in stripy leggings and falling apart denim shorts – putting on a mock hair metal voice and shouting: “Do we have any old school Cribs fans in the crowd today? I SAID ... do we have any old school Cribs fans in the crowd?!!”

It’s been trailed that Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina of Pussy Riot are on site this weekend, and they’ve just appeared up at the Park, driving out in front of the stage in a Russian military truck. A man dressed in Russian military uniform declared this “the People’s Republic of Glastonbury” and then Nadya and Masha mounted the truck, said “Fuck you!”, put a rainbow coloured balaclava on his head, forced him to his knees and taped him up. Before then reading out the “10 rules of Pussy Riot”, they said:

I have to officially warn you before our event – and it’s not a joke - that feminist punk really can drive you crazy, but it’s worth it. Do not resist it. And you have to sign an official agreement that if you will become crazy because of feminist punk, you will not go to court against us.

The second remark is: Don’t follow our art. It could offend you.

There is a one valid question for Pussy Riot. “What the hell you are doing, ladies? Why don’t you just sit on your couch and drink some beer?” What makes us act out? I’m really angry due to the fact that the main political institutions of our country are law enforcement, the army, police, intelligence agencies and prisons – and one insane quasi-superhero half-naked riding on a horse. The man who is not afraid of anyone, except gays. The man who is so good in friendship [that] he just presented half of my country to his closest friends, oligarchs.”

“Surprise, surprise,” mutters the peroxide mopped Tim Burgess as the Charlatans reveal themselves as the now-traditional secret special guests opening the Other stage. They go in all hits blazing, Weirdo, North Country Boy and Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over providing the ideal soundtrack to the crack of the day’s first cider. They dare to dot the odd sunnier track from new album Modern Nature – Let The Good Times Be Never Ending, Come Home Baby and So Oh – but crowdpleasers such as One to Another, How High and baggy evergreen The Only One I Know dominate. These good times just last an hour, but they bode well.

Glastonbury bills itself as a festival of contemporary performing arts, even if it’s 90% music and 10% people doing fire poi. But Michael Clark’s dance company kicked off the Pyramid stage with a highbrow but very witty performance. To a backing of Iggy Pop and David Bowie, the ridiculously lithe dancers dressed in skintight bodysuits went through a whole series of pieces (the crowd realising that they were actually nowhere near summer-body ready). They seemed like perfect replicants from the future trying out the range of human motion: there were graceful arcs, but also malfunctioning wriggles, even at one point a stage-hammering tantrum. But they were human after all, with a trio of them sneaking on stage naked, bottoms winking at the crowd. “Wonderful package”, a plummy woman behind me noted, as if appraising a fine courgette at a Surrey county fair.

Dancing in the crowd to The Jean Genie were Thomas Robinson from Manchester and Rose Adams from Somerset. “I saw her throwing some shapes and thought I’d join in. No, we don’t know each other. I’ve never seen these dancers before but they’re fantastic.”

Why French disco empresario Cerrone has been booked for a Thursday night warmup slot rather than a billing more worthy of a legend is baffling. But those who clocked that he was making an appearance at Block9’s stunning Genosys venue were treated to a stupendous DJ set of his hit-laden back catalogue. Hooked on You sounds better than ever after its recent remix revival. Supernature has even those who’ve never heard of him before, of which there are a few, singing along. The outdoor dancefloor doesn’t offer quite the sound system or vibe of a 1970s disco club but Cerrone still manages to send us off dancing into the night well and truly warmed up.

I arrived on site last night and immediately went to see one of the strangest, funniest and most joyous performances I’ve ever seen at Glastonbury: Lekiddo Lord of the Lobsters at the Rabbit Hole. This is undoubtedly one of the daftest performances Glastonbury has ever staged. “Let me see your claws,” Lekiddo tells his cult devotees at one point, before handing out santa hats and launching into, of all things, a Christmas song. But it’s also unrelentingly joyous – all major chords and cheesy sugar rush hooks.

Others just ponder the meaning of life. And then there are those including our Leah Green who go jogging round Glastonbury …

Good morning! It’s the day the festivities begin in earnest, with around 3,254 bands and 1,176 DJs appearing on 824 stages. But there was live music last night, with secret shows at William’s Green, and Mark Beaumont was there to catch them …

You hunt around all Thursday for a secret set and then three come along at once. After the sex, drugs and genital discharge-obsessed Rebel Bingo has called its last risqué number (“your mum’s a whore, 34!” is the only remotely printable example) the pot-luck hordes descend for a trio of TBAs listed at William’s Green, which is essentially Glastonbury catnip. There’s no Kitty, Daisy & Lewis-level disappointment either. At 8.30pm, Derbyshire’s Drenge take to a rammed tent with the grunge-Zep onslaught of Running Wild and split the tent. Half the crowd are blown away by their mongrel crossbreed of White Stripes and Nirvana, doused in overdrive that may well be rattling the stone circle to gravel. The other half are blown away by the fact that a band called Drenge don’t sound like a sludge metal dirge fronted by Julian Cope.

Only a bunch of grunge pop maniacs boasting a midweek N0 1 album described as “the debut of the decade” (copyright this writer, in a gibbering fit, elsewhere) could comfortably follow them, so it’s lucky Wolf Alice take the second unannounced slot. Leaping for a high-set bar, they come out scratching and squealing, rampaging through the ferocious Pixies homage You’re a Germ before showcasing the subversive subtleties that make their album My Love Is Cool such a delight. Few bands write songs that, like Your Loves Whore, sound by turns like Haim, Stevie Nicks and L7, or mingle Mazzy Star moments like Blush with sludgy pop stampedes like Moaning Lisa Smile, Drenge’s Eoin Loveless guesting on guitar while singer Ellie Rowsell clambers out over the crowd, yowling its euphoric chorus chant. Prince playing atop the Arcadia spider would have nothing on this.

Even when Kanye is correct in proclaiming his greatness, nobody wants to hear him say it. Even the birth of his daughter and his marriage to Kim Kardashian have done little to improve his reputation. That’s likely due to his humourlessness. Though Kim is widely perceived as a beautiful airhead, he defends her as a brilliant business mind and entertainer who deserves a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s great when a man sticks up for his wife, but one gets the feeling that such comments are really about Kanye himself. While playing him on Saturday Night Live, Jay Pharoah parodied him best: “I turned this woman into an artiste. A philosopher. A intergalactic icon of creativity.” Responded Kim’s character: “I’m also blonde now!”

In 1985, we built this burned out bus in a squat in west London. Whilst we were finishing the build Thatcher attacked the peace convoy at Stonehenge [in the Battle of the Beanfield] so we came to Glastonbury. The front of the truck was a giant skull with no windscreens. The driver was looking through with goggles. The back was like a chicken spine. The police, when they saw us coming, thought it was their conscience for what they did to the hippies. I drove straight up to the main stage and had a huge row with Michael Evis. But he also totally fell in love with us.

Last year, I spent an inordinate amount of time in a small bar at the top of the Park area, a bar called the Crow’s Nest. It only fits about 50 people, but it was rarely full. The music varied, from singer-songwriters to DJs and punk jazz mini-orchestras. It was all in the curation, of course, and most of the music was ear-openingly good, but at the same time, even if the acts were duff, there would be another one along in a minute. The Crow’s Nest repaid an investment in the Glasto long game. It also saved me from having to walk up that hill again.

It’s one thing when you’re sitting on the train next to someone with earbuds leaking whatever they’re listening to into your space while you try to catch up with reading the Spectator/Practical Caravan/High Times (delete as applicable). It’s another thing entirely when you’ve got a Hotly Tipped Recording Artist playing a set at the end of the carriage. The 18-year-old singer Soak appeared on one of the early Glastonbury trains to perform for passengers (it’s all part of First Great Western’s “Summer Tracks” – do you see what they did there? – campaign, apparently). Soak claimed there was “a real electric atmosphere in the carriage”.

Good news, campers! The Glastonbury weather forecast has shifted slightly, with Saturday and Sunday now looking less likely to be wet. According to the Met Office, the chance of precipitation is down to 20% on Sunday, and at less than 5% through Saturday daytime, and only rising to 20% in the evening. Come Saturday lunchtime, you may even want to consider breaking out the suncream, with a UV index of 6.

When you were planning your protest did you think about more extreme forms of bodily self-harm? How far would you go?

Petr: To continue to be able to be a nuisance to the authorities, who have several ways to eliminate their problems. Firstly, to scare people, secondly, to put them in jail (this causes unnecessary noise so the authorities try to be careful); thirdly to make a person flee the country.

It’s not in my interests to eliminate myself as a problem for the state.

Much admiration for your disciplined courage, and appreciation of a current of disillusion in Russian art since 1992. a) If you commuted acts of self-mutilation in Britain, France or germany, in a public place such as Trafalgar Square, or Place de la Concorde, how do you think people and government would react in the west? b) Do you see yourself as part of a continuum in Russian art, (if so please elaborate) or a specific development attached only to the present? c) Do you recognize yourself as an art martyr?

Ваша рациональная смелость производит большое впечатление. Главный тренд в российском искусстве с 1992 года - разочарование. Вопрос 1: если бы вы занялись самоистязанием в Британии, Франции и Германии, в общественном месте типа Трафальгарской площади иди Пляс де ля Конкорд, как, по-вашему, отреагировали западные прохожие и власти? Вопрос 2: считаете ли вы себя частью российского арт-континуума в целом (если да, можно поподробнее) или какого-то конктного современного течения? Вопрос 3: считаете ли вы себя мучеником?

Petr: a) I think that the first reaction would be similar, but I doubt that in the west the authorities would prosecute me in the same way. As far as I know, there are still a lot of places in the world where nudity is banned. In most countries everyone is still expected to care for and look after their body. States want the bodies of their citizens to be athletic, workable and able to reproduce. Only during war is it permissible to endanger your body. So despite apparent freedoms, we have to obey when it comes to the flesh.

Petr: а) Я думаю, что первоначальная реакция была бы похожей. Так как насколько я знаю, ещё очень много мест на земле где обычная нагота оказывается под предосудительным запретом. Помимо этого нужно помнить, что в большинстве стран (где-то гласно, а где-то на уровне общественного договора) каждому человеку по-прежнему предписывается заботиться и ухаживать за своим телом. Государства желают видеть тела своих граждан спортивными, работоспособными и эффективными с репродуктивной точки зрения. Только война между государствами делает похвальным риск, опасность и уничтожение себя во имя интересов истеблишмента. При всей внешней свободе, каждое тело и поведение должны демонстрировать соответствие этому порядку. Я думаю, что первоначальный вопрос: «Почему это здесь происходит?» у представителей власти и общества все-таки бы возникал. Однако я сомневаюсь, что сегодня на западе власти стали бы инициировать последующие уголовные и психиатрические разбирательства. Потому что каждый из подобных уголовных или психиатрических процессов имеет под собой жесткую подоплеку диктатуры консервативного порядка.

b) Of course, I consider myself part of the continuum. Since the end of 18th century, art history in Russia - from Radishchev, Rileyev, Herzen, Lermontov, Chernyshevsky, Tolstoy, Mayakovsky, Mandelstam, Lifshitz, Harms, Vvedensky, Zabolotsky, Oleynikov, Malevich, Filonov, to Punin - has been a history of conflict and power. These people were executed, deprived of property, rights and privileges. For example the art critic Nikolai Punin never gave way to authority. He did not compromise. Punin founded the Contemporary Art Department to resist official Bolshevik art. The department was closed. Punin was fired from the Russian Museum and arrested three times. He wrote about western European art and studied the impressionists – and was imprisoned for this. The prosecution said that his crime was “cosmopolitanism”. He died in the camp in 1953. In this sense, the relations of power and art have barely changed.

Эти люди десятилетия проводили под арестами и в ссылках, их казнили, лишали имущества прав и привилегий. Например искусствовед и критик Николай Пунин. Он никогда не пресмыкался перед властью. Он не шел на сделку. Пунин основал Отдел новейших течений. Отдел был основан, чтобы противостоять большевистскому официозу. Отдел закрыли. Пунина уволили из Русского Музея. Пунин был арестован трижды. Последний 10 летний срок он получил за убеждения в искусстве. Он писал книги и изучал искусство Сезанна, импрессионистов, написал учебник по западноевропейскому искусству. За это его и посадили, обвинение гласило: «За космополитизм». Он умер в лагере в 1953 году. В этом смысле в отношениях властей и искусства мало, что изменилось.

c) No. Outwardly it may seem that I am suffering and ultimately objectified, but in reality, I am causing problems for those in power. They very much want to stop this, but they just don’t know what to do with it. Therefore they become involved in the process, and could be seen to be criticising themselves.

в) Нет. Внешне может казаться, что я предельно объективирован и мучаюсь, однако в действительности я создаю сложную, и иногда тупиковую ситуацию для власти. Они очень хотят это ликвидировать, но они просто не знают, что им с этим сделать. Поэтому они вовлекаются в процесс, подчиняются событию и становятся основными действующими лицами. То есть я становлюсь субъектом этого события, а власть наоборот объективируется. Я делаю критику власти её же собственными руками.

Petr - is there a concern that your audience might more easily dismiss you precisely because in their minds the issues you are highlighting have not yet reached a level where such "pain" is necessary?

Petr: I don’t want to immediately and equally understood by everyone. If I wanted that, it would be easy to label me a populist. My objective is to make others see sense of the political situation, to make others experience it and relate to it. My ultimate goal is to help people articulate the uncompromising situation we are in today.

Have you made a difference? Does the Russian press support your actions or are you labelled
"mad"?

Petr: Yes, I think that changes are gradually happening. For example, after “segregation” performance authorities didn’t even initiate a case against me. Some members of the media support me, while others hint at what the investigative authorities would want to accuse me of.

For example, the idea of my “insanity” was put to the investigation officers by pro-Kremlin media.

Hi Petr, I read that the idea for Fixation was inspired by stories of the Gulags. It almost seems to me that the whole of Russian history carries the weight of oppression of it's people. Putin just seems to be the latest manifestation of a line of cruel people who have found their way to the top. Do you think this line can ever be broken, do you have to be cruel in Russia to make it to the top?

Здравствуйте, Пётр. Я читал, что на акцию “Фиксация” вас вдохновили рассказы о ГУЛАГе. Мне вообще кажется, что вся российская история целиком пронизана духом подавления человека человеком. А Путин - лишь очередной этап в этой череде садистов, пробившихся к вершинам власти. Как вы думаете, возможно ли прервать этот исторический процесс, или без жестокости добиться власти в России невозможно?

Petr: Hi, yes, scrotum nailing is an actual act of defiance both in the gulag and in modern prisons and camps. It was a statement on how the country was again being converted into one giant labour camp. The authorities have always been the most violent: the kings and emperors held military ranks, in Soviet times the country was managed by the KGB, now it’s the FSB. Nothing’s changed.

I do not know what is to be done to finally break this vicious circle. However, I think it’s very important that along with a political revolution there is a cultural one as well. Without it, all political revolutions are practically meaningless.

Petr: Привет, да жест прибивания мошонки, который я использовал в Фиксации, действительно взят как из жизни людей в ГУЛАГе, так и сегодняшних лагерях и тюрьмах. Я говорил о том, что страна опять превращается в большую зону, государство тюремного режима. Конечно, у власти всегда стояли самые жестокие люди – все цари и императоры были, прежде всего, военными. В советское время страной управляло КГБ, а сейчас ФСБ. Ничего не изменилось. Я не знаю, что должно произой ти, чтобы этот круг окончательно разорвался. Однако я предполагаю, что очень важно, чтобы наряду с политической революцией произошла революция в культуре. Без нее все политические перевороты оказываются, практически бессмысленными, так как люди, раз за разом возвращаются к тем же привычкам и обычаям, с которыми до этого боролись.

Permit me another question. In Britain a huge majority of people, as you can probably tell by the questions here, think that Art should be a pretty picture of a field done in oils. Is it the same in Russia or are people more open to exploration of the human condition?

Petr: To be honest, I’m a little surprised that in a country that’s come such a long way from Victorian moral values to the Sex Pistols, such conservative prejudices are still so strong. Apparently, such opportunism among the majority may indicate the influence of the Conservative party.

Yes, in Russia there is a huge problem with reactionary politics and the restoration of imperialist cultural values. This creates this monstrous hybrid of monarchical tradition with its orthodoxy and autocracy and the Bolshevik and imperial chauvinism with its eternal slaves and enslavers. What can we say about the situation with art in Russia, where art history ends with the Impressionists, and Malevich so far (among the vast majority) is not recognised as an artist at all, but is dismissed as a charlatan?

What can you say about the situation in Russia where the minister of culture spoke to the media after my “Fixation” performance and advised all people interested in such art to contact the museum of psychiatry? I think he simply forgot about Adolf Ziegler and cultural policy of Third Reich.

Petr: Если быть честным, я немного удивлен, что в стране, которая смогла преодолеть долгий путь развития от Викторианской морали до Sex Pistols, по-прежнему сильны консервативные предрассудки. Что можно говорить о ситуации с искусством в России, если изучение истории искусства заканчивается на импрессионистах, а Малевич до сих пор (среди подавляющего большинства) не признается художником, а именуется недоразумением или шарлатаном? Что можно сказать о ситуации в России, если министр культуры Мединский после акции «Фиксация», раздает комментарии в СМИ, в которых он советует всем людям, интересующимся подобным искусством обращаться в музей психиатрии? Скорее всего, он просто забыл об Адольфе Циглере и культурной политике Третьго Рейха.

Petr Pavlensky is one of the most prominent Russian protest artists of the moment.

The “living-pain” activist is renowned for his series of wince-inducing performances: he severed his right earlobe on the roof Moscow’s Serbsky psychiatric centre to protest against Russia’s use of forced psychiatry against dissidents; he sewed his mouth shut to support Pussy Riot; wrapped himself naked in barbed wire and nailed his scrotum to the floor of the Red Square.
