To help communicate complex laboratory techniques, JoVE provides step-by-step protocols accompanied by videos that help in visualizing the procedures, often with commentary from the researchers.

EBL has provided the General section of JoVE for some time, and has now added JoVE Neuroscience, JoVE Immunology & Infection and JoVE Clinical and Translational Medicine. Each section includes demonstrations of both basic and complex experimental techniques in the respective fields. In addition to the videos, full articles complete with the protocols described are included, along with downloadable PDFs.

JoVE General, JoVE Neuroscience, JoVE Immunology & Infection, and JoVE Clinical and Translational Medicine are available through the Digital Library.

JoVE indicates that 17 videos have been contributed from Vanderbilt University – view search results for items from Vanderbilt authors.

Welcome new Vanderbilt students! Below are a few of the many helpful resources we provide to get you off to a good start:

Important General Resources:
Digital Library – provides access to online resources selected for Vanderbilt’s biomedical community and reviewed by library staff members, including those provided through library subscriptions and freely available online tools. These include peer-reviewed journals, citation databases, specialized databases such as those providing information about genetics and molecular biology and other topics, online textbooks, links to government resources and data sources, sources of images for use in presentations, tools for research and education, and many others.

You can use this site not only to access resources you know about (UpToDate, JAMA, etc.), but also use the browse and advanced search features to find resources on your topic of interest. See the help to learn more.

PubMed – containing millions of citations from medical fields, with links to full-text articles provided through the library’s journal subscriptions, this database is the recommended starting point for topics including biomedicine, nursing, health administration, public health, and related topics.

OMIM – this is a good starting point for some information on genes related to health and diseases. For expert help with other genetics, biochemistry, and structure information and resources, drop in for our Tuesday afternoon office hours.

For new medical students:
MDConsult – this site has many popular textbooks as ebooks, patient education materials in English and Spanish, clinical guidelines, and other resources

New England Journal of Medicine – aside from being one of the most respected medical journals, test yourself with the Images Challenge (see a picture, guess the diagnosis) or review how-to videos of common procedures with Videos in Clinical Medicine. The library’s subscription to online issues of the journal go back to 1812!

For new nursing students:
New Students Fall 2011 – see this site for important information and updates from the School of Nursing.

CINAHL – the premier resource for nursing and allied health topics, this database is a key resource for literature searches related to clinical care provided by nurses and professional, occupational, and educational issues in nursing

Mosby’s Nursing Skills – how-to guides, checklists, quizzes, and illustrations/video for numerous nursing procedures.

Nursing Consult – see this site for popular textbooks (in the “Reference” section), synopses of evidence-based nursing practice for many common conditions, patient education materials in English and Spanish, dosage calculators, and other tools.

At the library:
We have full services hours when staff members are available to help with your research questions, and limited services hours in the morning and evening when the building is open for study and research, staffed by security guards.

Study rooms are available for group collaboration.

Request training to learn tips & tricks for making better use of resources like OMIM, PubMed, CINAHL, and other genetics and citation/article databases.

Other requests – such as for library orientation, genetics help, consumer health information sources, and document delivery/interlibrary loan – can also be made online.

Online tutorials are listed for help with key resources when the library is closed.

Our online section of resources for authors, researchers and grant writers of all levels includes information on starting points for finding articles, finding and using images, citation management tools, NIH public access policy compliance, understanding medical evidence, places to look for funding, and more.

Users can search the database by selecting an organism (options include: arabidopsis, worm, fly, human, mouse, baker’s yeast) and then entering the gene(s) of interest. A network will be displayed that gives a list of both queried and predicted genes in an interactive image that shows the relationships between the searched genes and other related genes.

Additional features include the ability to upload data and have it integrated into the predicted network. For more information about other utilities of GeneMANIA, see OpenHelix.

Note: GeneMANIA is not supported for IE7 and so may not work properly on some clinical workstations using this version of the browser; we have reported the issue to the CWS team but they do not have an estimate on when the browsers on those machines may be updated.

It was previously available through the NCBI website, but has not been updated there since February 2011.

The most up-to-date way to access this information is now through omim.org, where you’ll find information such on clinical and molecular features of a disease, along with links to relevant literature, clinical trials, genetic tests, animal models, and cellular pathways. Links are also provided to resources such as OrphaNet (for rare diseases and orphan drugs), the Genetic Alliance’s directory of disease information links for patients, DECIPHER (a database of clinically associated copy number variations), Clinicaltrials.gov, BioGPS, PharmGKB, and the Human Protein Reference Database (HPRD).

Additional features include gene/phenotype information at top of the records, an advanced search tool, and the option to view any page in any of several different languages via Google Translate.

For more information on the new site, see Open Helix’s recent blog post, which includes a short demonstration video, and this paper in a recent issue of the journal Human Mutation.
