EDF Climate Corps Marketing & Communications Intern

EDF is seeking a Marketing & Communications Intern to work May - November2012. Interested applicants should have superior writing skills and familiarity with online and traditional media. A basic knowledge of environmental issues is preferred.
The intern will be responsible for supporting EDF Climate Corps marketing & communications staff. EDF Climate Corps is an innovative summer fellowship program that places specially trained MBA and MPA students in companies, cities and universities to build the business case for energy efficiency. The intern will play an integral role in the creation, promotion and content development of an EDF blog and assist with external communications.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

Assist in creating, promoting and maintaining an EDF Climate Corps blogging platform, managing its editorial calendar, and developing content with EDF experts, Climate Corps fellows and participating organizations
Monitor media outlets and author a weekly blog post about “this week’s top headlines”
Engage thought leaders and relevant audiences through social media platforms
Conduct media research and help implement new outreach tactics
Help compile, edit and publicize the results of fellowship projects
Assist with drafting, editing and distributing press releases
Analyze media placements and evaluate effectiveness of 2012 marketing and communications activities

Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

Superior written and oral communication skills. Journalism and communications majors preferred
Experience writing for publications and/or blogs
Familiarity with a wide range of social media tools, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
Strong organizational skills and ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and on cross-functional teams
Ability to think strategically, creatively and analytically
Familiarity with corporate or public sector sustainability issues preferred

Compensation: This internship is paid at an hourly rate.

Term/Working Hours: This is a 7-month internship that will last May – November. The intern will work full-time at 35 hours/week mid-May through September. He or she will work part-time at 10-15 hours/week September through November – during these months, hours can be flexible based on the candidate’s existing school or work load.

Detail-oriented ability to work with financial data, spot trends and ensure accuracy.
A high degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel. Must be able to work with Excel to understand and develop formulas, charts and spreadsheets that clearly present data to facilitate decision-making by senior leadership.

Overall Function

The Foundations Officer will be responsible for the effective strategic development and management of relationships for a portfolio of foundations, including the successful cultivation and solicitation of five- to seven-figure gifts that provide significant support for EDF to carry out its mission. This position is part of Institutional Giving within EDF’s Development Department. The Development Department raises 90% of EDF’s $100M+ budget annually. The Institutional Giving team is responsible for raising about half of the department’s revenue. The Foundations Officer reports to the Director of Institutional Giving.

This position can be located in EDF's New York, NY or Raleigh, NC offices.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with program and development staff, raise $1 million plus annually from donors – primarily foundations – across the country to support the work of EDF.
Identify, cultivate, solicit and strategically manage a portfolio of donors - primarily foundations - including a strong emphasis on pro-actively managing donor relationships.
Effectively represent, in both written and oral communications, a wide array of regional, national, and global environmental programs to inspire donors to support EDF.
Conduct a range of development activities including the preparation of proposals, reports and other communications to donors, and maintain accurate donor and revenue information in management databases.
Work effectively with development staff in New York and in other EDF offices.
Assist other development officers on special projects or efforts that contribute to the organization’s development goals.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
A minimum of five years of demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising, including strong track record of securing large gifts from foundations; additional experience raising major gifts is preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Director – Gulf and Southeast Oceans Program will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

Manage the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast Oceans Program team. Enhance communication, coordination, and efficiency, and leverage the strengths and experience of Oceans Program staff in EDF's Texas and North Carolina offices.
Supervise Program operations, review and update budget and strategic planning documents and work plans for all major program initiatives in the region, as necessary.
Serve as primary liaison with other EDF regional and national Oceans Program staff and contribute to their objectives.
Analyze complex fishery management programs and find ways to eliminate overfishing, rebuild depleted fisheries and strengthen commercial and recreational communities through the adoption of catch shares or other effective accountability measures.
Forge alliances among disparate interest groups and coordinate citizen and environmental groups in the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast. Help to build regional and national coalitions and promote conservation leadership in the commercial and recreational fishing communities.
Engage the media to advance project objectives and communicate project results to a broad array of audiences.
Coordinate the region's work with the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, National Marine Fisheries Service, and other federal, state and interstate fishery and ocean conservation agencies.
Engage academic scientists, policy experts, and others to solve complex fishery management problems.
Represent the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast Oceans Program at regional advisory board and national trustees meetings as needed.
Work with EDF development officers to identify potential funding sources and secure funding to help expand the program.
Prepare and supervise the annual budget for the regional program.
Function as a member of the Ocean Program's Leadership Team with the goal of improving the effectiveness and coordination of the Ocean Program.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

Knowledge of federal and state ocean conservation laws and regulations
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a growing program and staff
Ability to use science, law, economics and advocacy to initiate and win positive environmental change
Experience achieving results in environmental policy and politics
Minimum ten years of experience with significant time working with state and federal natural resource management agencies, state legislatures, or the U.S. Congress
Knowledge of the biological, economic and management issues related to major U.S. fisheries, especially commercial and recreational fisheries

Overview
The Office of Economic Policy and Analysis is seeking a recent Ph.D. recipient with expertise in environmental economics and/or policy for a High Meadows/Princeton Post-Doctoral Fellowship for up to two years, starting in summer 2012. The Fellow will work collaboratively with other EDF economists, scientists and program experts to help develop and advocate science-based, economically sound environmental policies. The Fellow will work in a focus area, suited to their background and interests, from the range of EDF program work: climate, energy, oceans, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and human health (www.edf.org). Specific possibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Regulatory structure and emerging technologies in electricity generation. EDF's Energy Program seeks to transform incentives in electricity markets to reduce the environmental impacts of electric power generation by encouraging greater energy efficiency, promoting smart grid technologies, and expanding renewable generation. Economic and scientific analysis will be at the core of this initiative: developing new models for electricity regulation that create incentives for energy efficiency and low-carbon generation; understanding the environmental implications of new technologies for extracting energy, generating and storing electricity, and managing electricity demand; and proposing policy frameworks to provide incentives for the development and deployment of new technologies.

Nitrogen pollution. EDF is exploring whether it is possible to cut nitrogen inputs to the environment in half, and how to ensure that ecological and societal objectives are achieved. In a three-pronged approach, EDF will (1) use existing nitrogen-reduction approaches to maximum advantage; (2) explore the potential for economic incentives to reduce nitrogen use and emissions from fuel combustion, including by designing and implementing market-based policies; and (3) spur new research. We will also generate awareness and support for the 50% reduction goal among a wide range of constituencies including national and international scientists, policymakers and the public.

Markets for ecosystem services. The long-term health of our working lands requires that we incorporate the true value of ecosystem services into the calculus of landowners. A sustainable agricultural system will reward farmers for using agricultural practices that sequester carbon, reduce fertilizer runoff, maintain riparian habitat, and so on — with the incentives commensurate with the underlying value of those ecosystem services. However, despite a wealth of academic and popular writing touting the true economic value of our ecosystems, very few such markets have been successfully established due to the public-goods nature of ecosystem services. EDF seeks to advance the creation of ecosystem markets through well-designed regulatory frameworks including "carbon offset" programs, water markets, wetland banks, and other mechanisms. The foundation for this advocacy will be rigorous analysis of the social and economic drivers of land management, along with creative application of economic principles to design new policy mechanisms.

Incorporating experimental design and behavioral economics into environmental advocacy. EDF's advocacy in a number of program areas increasingly takes the form of policy interventions that depend on the involvement and participation of specific communities. Examples include fishermen embracing catch shares, farmers in developing countries undertaking agricultural practices that sequester carbon, landowners in Brazil signing up to reduce deforestation rates, and U.S. homeowners adopting energy efficiency measures. In each case, economic incentives can help motivate participation, but are often not sufficient in the case of cultural factors, transactions costs, or behavioral inertia. EDF seeks to draw lessons from behavioral and experimental economics in order to amplify the effectiveness of economic incentives and learn about the effective design of interventions.

Responsibilities

To conduct analysis that will lead to the development or refinement of EDF's position in the area of interest, and make recommendations on approaches for outreach and influencing policy
To engage fully in EDF's advocacy in the Fellow's area(s) of focus, primarily through rigorous economic and policy analysis but also by participating in the development of strategy and in outreach to policy makers, other stakeholders, and the interested public
To become familiar with and keep up-to-date on the economic and/or policy literature relevant to their focus areas, and to synthesize and disseminate that information for EDF scientists, economists, lawyers and policy specialists
To participate in writing papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and reports/fact sheets/blog posts for general audiences on the topic of focus
The Fellow is also encouraged to pursue non-EDF projects and collaborations in her/his own areas of interest

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in economics or social science with relevant economic training and experience
A Princeton degree, preferably at the PhD level
A passion for environmental protection, a commitment to rigorous analysis, creativity (and a dose of pragmatism) in the real-world application of economic theory to practice, and knowledge of relevant environmental policy issues
The ability to communicate complex ideas to a general audience in writing and orally

Policy and legal initiatives of importance during the relevant timeframe are likely to include smart grid policy (at the New York City, New York State, regional and federal levels) to facilitate the decarbonization of the electric and transportation systems, including filings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission relating to regulation of electric transmission and wholesale market design; innovative energy efficiency finance solutions for the private and public sectors; restoration and prevention of further deterioration of the wetlands of Coastal Louisiana, including regulatory and legislative initiatives as well as opportunities relating to Deep Water Horizon damages; initiatives relating to the extraction and production of natural gas, including hydrofracturing; defending and strengthening regional GHG cap-and-trade and low carbon fuel standards; and land use planning initiatives in the Hudson River Valley and other areas proximate to the New York City estuary.

Previous interns have researched, written, and presented legal and policy documents for federal court litigation, administrative litigation, national and state regulatory proceedings, and various policy venues. For example, research activities have supported: development of legislation to make penalties for oil pollution available for coastal restoration; federal district court litigation over cap-and-trade programs and low carbon fuel standards; recommendations to be made to the Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA to expedite the construction of diversion projects needed for coastal restoration; litigation in New York State court to defend the City’s comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan, which aims to reduce truck emissions on New York City streets, from attack; and FERC proposals pertaining to electric transmission system and wholesale market design.

Attorneys in the New York Office are active in EDF’s Energy, Climate & Air and Land, Water, Wildlife Programs. Clean energy strategies in New York include on on-the-ground partnerships to build the smart grid, ensuring investments that benefit the economy and environment, applying sound science to ensure natural gas provides real and sustained carbon benefits without harming the environment or health of communities, and developing regulatory reforms and business models that make energy efficiency profitable and market-driven. Through our LWW program, we have a major effort underway to restore the MSR Delta in coastal LA, the 7th largest delta in the world. This work involves changing the Corps management of the River that deprives the Delta of sediment. We also have land regulatory actions underway in Suffolk County, LI and the Lower Hudson Valley. The New York office is also actively involved in supporting the work of our SF office to defend various initiative of the CARB to implement the CA Global Warming Solutions Act.

Position Description
Agriculture is widely recognized as a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. EDF has been working domestically and in Asia to promote low carbon farming with a focus on reduction of GHG emissions. One of the key improvements that can be made in agriculture to reduce GHG emissions is better fertilizer management. Efficient fertilizer use can reduce the cost of fertilizer per kilo of yield and potentially provide additional revenue to the farmer if GHG reductions can be cost effectively monitored, verified and sold as offset credits. An additional benefit of better fertilizer management can be a reduction in the amount of nitrogen runoff from farms and associated water quality benefits.

EDF seeks an intern to evaluate the water quality benefits which could accrue from the low carbon farming practices being encouraged in India. The intern will produce a report, based upon the data being generated in EDF’s Low Carbon Farming projects in India and existing literature, to estimate the water quality benefits of reduced nitrogen runoff resulting from farms participating in the EDF project. The intern will also collect available data on the environmental status of water bodies in the region of India where EDF’s projects are located to provide a basis upon which to assess future potential benefits which could accrue as the EDF Low Carbon Farming project expands to other farms in the region.

Specific outcomes to be achieved and what the intern can expect to get out of the experience include:
The report to be produced by the intern will help EDF staff and their colleagues better assess the benefits of the Low Carbon Farming project from a wider perspective by providing an estimate of the improvement in water quality. Agricultural impacts on water quality are a significant concern in India and around the world.

The intern will have the opportunity to work with a number of EDF staff and their colleagues involved in the India project including several Ph.D.’s and Senior Policy Specialists. The intern will also gain an insight into life in a major environmental organization. In addition, EDF’s New York office hosts many summer interns and has a program of activities from which the intern will benefit.

How this intern position will contribute to the mission and work of the organization:
EDF’s Low Carbon Farming project in India seeks to improve the environment by improving the welfare of small, low income farming communities. The intern’s report will help to better assess the benefits which are being realized as a result of EDF’s projects in India, thereby contributing to their future success.

Qualifications
The intern is pursuing a natural sciences degree, and has a basic understanding of nitrogen cycling and its impact on water quality. An understanding of agriculture or experience in India would be useful but are not required. Also, the intern will have excellent verbal/written communication and organizational skills, strong analytical and research skills, and is able to work as a member of a team and independently.

$3,000 stipend ($2,500 in summer, $500 in fall)

Position Description
Guided by the best science, we are working to make chemicals safer through policy and market changes. The Iscol intern will be supported by a Senior Scientist and Health Scientist, who are working to reform U.S. chemicals policy and advance private-sector initiatives that can drive market change. Current efforts include: achieving comprehensive reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); supporting and shaping EPA regulatory activities on chemicals; working with companies to identify and eliminate unsafe chemicals in consumer products; and advancing the science that is increasingly linking chemical exposures to chronic diseases. The intern will work primarily within the EDF DC Office and may have opportunities to travel to local meetings or symposia as appropriate.

The Iscol intern will contribute to EDF’s goals by substantiating and building upon its image as a science-driven organization. Specific outcomes will include a portfolio of written materials and analyses, including memos and data tables, that support the work of the health program in improving chemicals policy and driving the market toward safer chemicals. The intern can expect to experience firsthand how science informs policy and the marketplace. The intern will also gain an understanding of how an advocacy organization fits and works within the nexus of science, policy, and market forces to effect change. POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Oceans Program within EDF has worked to reform management of marine fisheries through development, implementation and refinement of incentive-based systems, primarily catch shares and related approaches such as cooperatives. These systems result in greater success meeting management targets, and therefore increased stability and sustainability, while also improving efficiency, flexibility and stewardship among fishermen. Furthermore, these changes create opportunities to enhance conservation outcomes and improve fishing opportunities by integration with and innovative application of other management tools, such as marine protected areas, territorial user rights, habitat offsets, and other area- or habitat-based tools. EDF has begun these sorts of management enhancements through a project evaluating the performance of existing closed areas and developing improved network designs in the New England and Pacific groundfish fisheries, both of which have recently converted to catch share management. This internship will help us chart the next generation of initiatives combining spatial tools with incentive-based management. The intern will conduct research on the biological and ecological status, scientific needs, and socio-economic and governance context of a range of fisheries in the U.S. and overseas to identify and shape novel science-based tools to enhance overall fishery performance.

Specific outcomes to be achieved and what the intern can expect to get out of the experience include:
The primary deliverable will be a report synthesizing all of the lessons learned and ideas generated, and additional materials might also be generated as needed to contribute to specific projects along the way. In conducting this research and generating these products, the intern will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of staff experts within EDF, experts in other organizations, agencies and institutions, and stakeholders ranging from fishermen to decision-makers. The project will require some travel to meetings, workshops and field sites, all providing a wide range of direct exposure to the people, places and issues involved in sustainable fisheries. Most importantly, the project will allow the intern to look holistically at fishery management problems, understand their elements systematically, and collaborate in developing innovative and integrated solutions.

How this intern position will contribute to the mission and work of the organization:
The EDF Oceans Program is currently in the midst of a strategic re-visioning process, one component of which focuses on developing new habitat-focused initiatives. Concurrently, several ongoing projects focused on specific fisheries are already examining how habitat and other spatial management tools can achieve greater conservation benefits and improve overall fishery performance. Those ongoing projects provide the linkage between our current focus harvest management and a future focus on habitat management. The intern will play an important role in building that bridge by understanding and refining tools currently being applied, and using that knowledge to shape a vision for our next generation of work.

Qualifications
A grounding in biology and ecology is essential to this project, although a major in these areas is not necessary. Other relevant specialties include geography, economics and environmental policy. Direct training with marine ecology and fisheries is preferred but not essential, as long as the intern has the ability to quickly learn the basics concepts in these areas.

Familiarity with the suite of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) is essential, and expertise with additional bibliographic, database and other software packages would be helpful as well. GIS skills would be a significant bonus, but are not essential. The intern should have strong research skills and the ability to organize and communicate information effectively.

Compensation
$3,000 stipend ($2,500 in summer, $500 in fall)

Requirements
This position is open only to continuing Cornell students (Juniors and Sophomores). Seniors should not apply.

Must work 10 weeks during the time period June 11 – August 31, 2012 (10 weeks at 35 hours = 350 hours).

Key Responsibilities

Lead a team of staff and consultants to develop economic and financial tools for existing projects and to prepare new initiatives, including valuation tools and business plans, as well as cost-benefit, process and uncertainty analyses.
Develop a sustainable financing plan for catch shares implementation in Mexico identifying innovative public and private sources.

Assist in preparation of proposals, reports and project idea notes on economic, financial and market-related issues related to fisheries in the Gulf of California Fisheries working with fishermen and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

Legal eligibility to work in Mexico.
MBA or Masters in resource economics (fisheries preferred) plus five years relevant experience.
Willingness to travel locally and regionally in Mexico up to 40% of the time.
Clear and coherent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to present technical information in clear, concise terms to a non-technical audience.
Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative economic analysis.
Knowledge of statistical modelling a plus.
