E.D.&A. develops and produces custom-made electronics for machines and devices. As Linux appears in all kinds of applications, E.D.&A. decides to also come onto the market with electronics with Linux. In this way the visitor of the exhibition ESEF will operate the Linux based controller for a free coffee at the booth of E.D.&.A .

Stable and reliable platform
The benefits of using Linux are very clear. It is a generally accepted standard operating platform that offers a range of possibilities that otherwise would ask additional development hours. A Linux-based system is configurable. There are plenty of applications and library functions to build and expand the system.

According to E.D.&A. these systems will be particularly used in applications with extensive graphic requirements by the support of graphic processors such as playing sound and video clips in the user interface. Data storage on SD cards, Flash disk, etc. is easily accomplished. Besides, the extensive communication options such as ethernet, USB and Bluetooth are numerous.

By integrating Linux E.D.&A. is able to offer electronic controllers with a powerful user interface with a modern "look and feel" and a shorter time-to-market by the standard options.

Order free coffee via Linux
At their booth at ESEF in March, E.D.&A. installs a coffee machine which will be used by the visitor to operate the Linux based controller to order free coffee. In this way E.D.&A. shows the possibilities of their custom-made electronics with Linux.

Since a few months E.D.&A. has been certified as an Apple Development Licensee. This means that E.D.&A. is allowed to develop hardware that is connected to Apple products such as Ipad and/or Iphone. The development license can be useful because more and more customers are searching for electronic controllers that can be operated via Apps.

Other ways to operate
As an innovative trendsetter custom-made controller manufacturer E.D.&A. confirms the increasing interest of machine constructors to operate their machines and appliances in a different way (e.g via Apps).

In comparison with the current establishment E.D.&A soon will have significantly more production, test and warehouse space and a spacious R&D department for its engineers.

Gert DHandschotter, Managing Director of E.D.&A.: "The construction of this new building is a new step in the evolution of E.D.&A. We believe that this move is necessary in order to meet the expectations of the customers. Since the end of 2012, we produce the custom-made electronic controllers also on our own production line. We have the intention to systematically expand the number of products via our own assembly line in the future. The facilities of the new building and the potential to expand at the new location make E.D&A completely ready for the future. "

The new location has been consciously chosen in the neighbourhood of the current place of business. Just a little further in another part of the same industrial area. The accessibility at the border between the Netherlands and Belgium is a major advantage for the 45 employees, customers, etc.

In addition to the control unit with motor controller E.D.&A. will also develop the user interface. In the future E.D.&A. will also produce, assemble and test this controller in their own production facility in Kapellen.

Strict audits
This customer does not take chances with this. After a rigorous selection procedure and after various comprehensive audits this large appliance constructor has selected E.D.&A. to execute this development. In their final report they highlighted the "World Class performance level of the development, production and test department at E.D.&A..

Controllers with integrated safety functions
From cost aspect, more and more functions integrated in the control system. These are not only functional matters that determine the functioning of the machine. Also safety features that should prevent a machine to endanger its surroundings or the operator are integrated in the control system. Consequently, there are no external components required to ensure these functions.

Standards for hardware and software
The integration of safety functions in a controller is subjected to a strict regulation with specific requirements per application. For this case the ironer controller must conform to IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60730-1. This standard requires that the controller is "1-fail safe". This means that if one electronic component fails, no unsafe situation may occur. As part of the risk analysis a FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is made on component level for the hardware.

These standards require not only specific measures for the hardware. Specific parts of the software are designed such as they meet the stringent requirements for a Class B control function. For the software design a UML modelling tool was used. An integrated test environment monitors the quality of the written code by performing static code analysis.

E.D.&A. has developed a custom-made electronic controller with capacitive colour touchscreen for a large manufacturer of frying systems. This unit will be placed behind a glass cover plate. This is an advantage in a greasy environment because in this way it is easy to clean.

The electronic controller will be used in a special frying system: pre-fried French fries or snacks are prepared without adding frying fat in a steam environment. This results in a healthier way of frying, moreover that fact is that frying fat is expensive.

Fat and vibrations

Challenge in this development was the unfriendly environment for an electronic controller where fat and mechanical vibrations are present. The USB host interface allows easy software update in the field. The same interface also allows to exchange recipes and settings between multiple fryers. Furthermore, the control system equipped with an Ethernet interface. In this way, the controller is all set for an integration in a corporate network.

Co-development

The development of this new custom-made controller was established by an intense cooperation with the engineers of the customer. E.D.&A. develops the hardware and also writes the low level drivers for the access to the hardware. In addition, E.D.&A. is also responsible for the implementation of the Real Time Operating System (RTOS). The customer takes care of the application software.

During the latest months new production and test machines have been installed, which currently produce plenty of electronic controllers. With this expansion E.D.&A. builds on its position as innovative and flexible electronics partner.

All aspects

At this moment there are a dozen of products which are already produced by these new production machines. E.D.&A. will systematically expand this in the future. Instead of outsourcing production to Eastern Europe, E.D.&A. will largely produce the electronics via their own assembly line in the future. E.D.&A. will be at least as competitive in terms of costs, because the company now has control of all aspects: development, production and testing procedures. New developments can be completely tailored to the requirements of their own machines, what will result in an increase of efficiency.

Custom-made flexibility

E.D.&A. has been investing in very solid and reliable machines including a SMD-placement machine, a selective solder machine and a flying probe test machine. These machines are from leading brands. E.D.&A. wrote the necessary software, which for example leads to a full traceability on component level. That brings quality to an even higher level.

This investment will ensure that E.D.&A. can work even more flexible towards their customers and guarantee them even more quality and reliability. E.D.&A. hopes to fulfil the slogan ' E.D.&A.., your external Electronics Department ' even better.

As an innovative trendsetter custom-made controller manufacturer E.D.&A. confirms the increasing interest of machine constructors to operate their machines and appliances in a different way (e.g via Apps). Proceeding the consumer market we are already accustomed to use two or more fingers to handle an iPad or iPhone. This trend continues in the professional market. Nowadays we want to operate machines and appliances in the same way.

Operation via Smartphone or tablet instead of a remote control?
At the SPS 2012 E.D.&A. has shown a Smartphone controller that works via an App and Bluetooth connection (or Wi-Fi).

A Bluetooth connection is very suitable to replace remote controls at a short distance with a Smartphone or tablet PC. This means that machines or devices can also be controlled in a different way. The big advantage at home, for example, is that several remote controls can be replaced with only one device that we always have on hand: a Smartphone or a tablet PC.

E.D.&A. has recently been admitted by Apple to a limited group of developers who may develop hardware applications for Apple devices such as iPhone or iPad.

Smartphone controller via a web application
E.D.&A. has already introduced a Smartphone controller that operates via a web application. In this way it is possible to change the settings of a machine or a device via a webpage on a Smartphone or tablet PC. The advantage of such a web application is that it operates platform-independently. And whats more: no Apps for Apple and Android devices have to be created.

PS E.D.&A. was also present at the seminar of Agoria (Dec 2012) about the increasing importance of mobile applications (apps) and the use of mobile devices in the professional market.

Quality: top priority for more than 30 years for E.D.&A.

E.D.&A. has acquired a lot of experience in the development of electronic controllers and this for a variety of applications such as ovens, ventilation systems, gas fires, automatic doors, etc.

These controllers are extensively used worldwide in often tough conditions. It is therefore clear that an excellent quality of our products is very important.

If this is also recognised and confirmed by our customers, this will only encourage us to continue our work and to keep up our high standards.

The picture here below (which was sent to us by a customer) shows an E.D.&A. controller (V10), which has been in service in their carwash installations for more than 20 years or more than 30.000 hours !
