Maple Street Park 5K Running Series May 1st Results

Wednesday, May 1, 35 runners gathered at Maple Street Park on a gorgeous 75 degree day for the first of four races in the Maple Street Park Running Series. Adam Bulakowski was the overall male winner with a time of 18:24 and Tracy Benedict was the overall female winner with a time of 22:50.

Final results and age group points are posted below. The 2nd race of the series will be on Wednesday, May 8 at 6 pm. If you are interested in running in any of the remaining races of the series, you can register online or call the EJRP offices at 878-1375.

We are seeking Coaches for our Summer Youth Soccer League! This recreational soccer league will be a fun, action-filled experience. Each evening will consist of skill development and review, followed by games. Games will be held on age-appropriate sized fields with smaller sized teams. This is a volunteer coached league. Amazing Park Challenge

The Champlain Valley Recreation Association and Essex Junction Recreation and Parks would like to challenge you and your friends and family to get outdoors for an exciting summer of new adventures and activities in the parks that surround you. Register your team of up to six people and receive a passport that grants a one-time admission for all your members into a number of pre-selected parks in the Champlain Valley throughout the summer. Complete activity pages and gather stamps in your passport at each of the parks to earn great outdoor gear prizes! A giant kickoff party and a big finale mark the start and end of the challenge! You won’t want to miss out on this exciting adventure! Passports are $25 for residents and non-residents and may be purchased at the EJRP office, Monday-Friday 8am-4pm.

Village Kids Registration Begins April 15

For children currently enrolled in the Village Kids program, and/or their siblings, registration begins on April 15. Open enrollment begins on Monday, April 29, for the 2013-2014 school-year Village Kids program. All Village Kids registrations must be made in person only. Please bring a completed registration form and a check, cash, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, or Discover) to pay the $35.00 per child registration fee. Children who are enrolled less than 5-days per week must maintain a consistent schedule of days of the week that they participate.

Maple Street Park 5K Running Series

This is the most fun you'll have on a Wednesday night! The Maple Street Park Running Series is a points-based series designed to encourage friendly competition and the enjoyment of running and racing. Course length will be a 5K (3.1 miles) where new and experienced runners will enjoy the friendly, grassroots atmosphere of this fun course around Maple Street Park and adjoining property. We will have great raffle prizes each race and an awards ceremony at the last race. Register for all 4 races by April 19 and guarantee yourself a MSP Race Series T-shirt.

Above The Influence 5K

The Above the Influence group run through Essex CHIPS is organizing a 5K Fun Run. Please help support this cause and be healthy doing it! The race starts and ends at the Essex High School, bringing runners down and back on Old Colchester Road before winding through local neighborhoods as racers head to the finish.

The Village of Essex Junction Trustees just established a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and needs your expertise and energy to help make our community more conducive to non-motorized transport! We are looking for a group of committed volunteers who are interested in bringing dreams about non-motorized transport into reality in Essex Junction!

The Village Trustees are looking for citizen volunteers for the Walk/Bike Advisory Committee.

Any interested Village resident may submit a letter of interest to the Village Trustees, c/o Village Manager, 2 Lincoln Street, Essex Junction, VT 05452, by May 9th, 2013 or email patty@essexjunction.org. Interviews are expected to be held at the May 14th Trustees meeting.

Officially Speaking: Sports & Athletes…..from an Official’s Perspective

The Positive Youth Sports Alliance of Essex (PYSA) presents: Officially Speaking: Sports & Athletes…..from an Official’s Perspective, on Tuesday, April 2, at 7:00p.m. in the Essex High School auditorium.

As fans in the stands, coaches on the sideline, or players on the court, everyone seems to know the rules and wants to help enforce them. But, only the officials are the ones who get to make those determinations. This is an opportunity to hear things from their perspective. “We expect that this will be both enlightening and entertaining,” said panel moderator and EHS Athletic Director Ed Hockenbury. “This is a rare opportunity to hear what it is like to be the one with the whistle. We think that there will be valuable lessons for athletes, coaches, and parents to listen, laugh, and learn from these folks who play an important role in our sports experience.”

A panel of officials, umpires, and referees of a variety of sports will be sharing their experiences, stories, and perspectives. The intended audience is local parents, coaches, and middle & high school student athletes. Additionally, the PYSA will be presenting the 2012 Coach and Friend of the Year Awards.

For those athletes too young to sit for the presentation, the Essex High School Athletic Leadership Council will be hosting Athletes Afoot!, a fun time to unwind for kindergarten through sixth grade students in the cafeteria/gymnasium, featuring arts & crafts, board games, sports, games, ping-pong, and fun. Participants will have free reign to play and hang out with EHS varsity leaders and athletes.

Voters approved to discontinue mailing the Annual Reports to residents’ homes. Instead, copies will be available at select locations and on-line. Copies of the Annual Reports may also be mailed upon request.

Name a way to have fun with the whole family...Survey Says? EJRP Game Show Night! Come on down to an evening of the high-energy game of Survey Says! This is a spoof on the classic TV game show Family Feud. Teams will be asked general knowledge questions (not trivia) as you go head-to-head for great prizes. Come with your family or a team of friends, neighbors, or co-workers consisting of 4 to 5 players. Upon arrival, teams will enter their name in for a chance to compete on the stage. Several teams will be selected randomly. Not all teams may have the chance to compete. Audience members are welcome to come and enjoy the show without entering their name to compete.

No registration required. $5 adults / $3 youth at the door.

12th Essex Annual Winter Carnival and Chili Cook Off

Join us on Saturday, March 2^nd for 12th Annual Essex Winter Carnival and Chili Cook Off from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM at ADL Middle School. Come join us for a day filled with fun indoor and outdoor activities for people of all ages. You won’t want to miss the circus performance workshop and performance by Linda Peck, face painting by Face Mania, Climbing Wall, children’s arts and crafts projects, a performance and drumming workshop by Tony Vacca, a giant sledding hill, x-country skiing, outdoor games, horse driven sleigh/hay rides, Chili Cook-Off, food, and so much more.

It is not too late to cook up your favorite chili recipe and enter it in the Chili Cook Off. All entries must be turned into either the Essex Junction Recreation and Parks Department or the Essex Parks and Recreation Department by Thursday, February 28th by 4 PM. You can download your entry form by visiting www.ejrp.org orwww.essex.org. Contestants must drop off their chili no later than 10:30 a.m. on March 2^nd . Participants must bring the chili in a warm crock pot. You may also bring copies of your recipe to share with others. Voting will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 1:35 p.m. in the cafeteria of ADL Middle School.
