A San Diego Story & Smoke Break (#2)

Before you start this take a second and smoke a bowl and spark a blunt while you blast some EMATiON bangers. I blame ONLY MYSELF FOR MY MISTAKES... but want you to understand things from my point-of-view.

My story will be something special, the hardest point is going to be picking a starting point. I seriously thought about it today and realized I've always been super smart and tons of trouble at the same time! One of my earliest memories is when I burnt my house down by lighting the garbage in my Mom's room.... I was 4 when that happened and the older I got the worse things became...

I started writing poems around 9 years old... the was the foundation for my "rapping". The therapist at my anger management classes thought that it would be a good idea to express myself. To make it more interesting I would try and turn them into songs and sing while I listened to music on MTV. Originally it was actually Michael Jackson that I would try to emulate. Then one day, I heard something they called "rap" I liked the fact that hip-hop had my rhythm, more words, and everything was much more fast paced.

By the time I turned 12, I was already stealing clothes, cds, shoes, and anything I saw, wanted, or had a desire to obtain. I was skipping school, started another fire (burnt down a wheat field this time), used stolen credit cards to shop online (by making a fake eBay page people would have to re-enter their information on), and that's not even the start of my troubles. I ended up going to jail for 30 days as a juvenile. During my month in custody I didn't get a single visit from any of my family... it really fucked with me at the time.

My problems only continued to evolve as I grew older and convinced that I knew everything.

Today my two biggest struggles have been sobriety and stability. If you listen to any of my songs you know that I've never kept this a secret...The whole meaning behind "The Blunt Raps" is making real-(BLUNT) music-(RAPS).

I know a lot of my songs have various drug references, especially with opiates and powerful stimulants. I'm not going to give any specific names... but I will say that some people smoke it, some people snort it, and some even sacrifice their own skin with scars. You've probably heard it called "bangin", "fixin", "jammin junk" or a "hot shot" (which is death by a syringe)

I think sometimes we use slang to describe things in a ways that make them seem more acceptable. I wish I would of just smoked some weed and stopped there. I was a straight-A student in school, I was solid in sports, I was very social and spending every second I had left over teaching myself to mix and master songs and improve my sound quality. I wasn't the "stereo-typical" scumbag slammin' shit when I started. It wasn't till I got super wasted one night with a girl I thought was super sexy that I snorted my first line of cocaine. I decided it would be beneficial to experiment with every type of drug at-least once which I admit was an extremely stupid idea.

If you want to risk ruining your life beyond the point of repair then I would recommend doing the same shit.

In the beginning my benzoylmethylecgonine use started out pretty seldom and wasn't anything I ever spent money to obtain. It wasn't until I had moved to San Diego a little bit after I had turned 18 that things all changed...

In the beginning everything was beautiful! I worked at the Denny's off of Bernardo Center, I had a great glass bong that I hid behind my dresser from my Grandma, and I lived without a worry in the world...

The only thing that bugged me was that I didn't have any real friends and it was always a struggle trying to find weed.I would search and search and spend hours sometimes trying to find someone I could smoke out after they delivered the danks. During my first few months in SD, I was barely blazing, stacking lots of $, always rapping, but I was depressed from being alone with no social life.

A few months later everything had changed and I had some "real" friends that were a lot of fun to party with until a tragedy transformed my life in an unforeseen way...

My friend Charles passed away in a crazy car accident and to help me heal I wrote a song about the experience and everything on my mind and sent it thru Myspace to people I thought might actually listen ... It's called "Why Do We Die Young". I never would of imagine that I would meet someone through a message I had sent that would completely change my life. Her name is somewhere in the history books these days. At the time we met she was 20 (two years and 3 days older then me) and probably the most beautiful person I had ever seen. She would talk to me for hours about her family she loved, how'd she'd never done drugs; her best-friend Jenny that had passed because a drug overdose and so many other things. She instantly became my best friend and was the only person I've ever broke down all my barriers for her to burn later.

Truthfully, she made me think trash could truly turn to treasure, that rapping wouldn't ruin me, that cash is just gratuity, and didn't think she was serious when she said she would be screwing me. (I might use that for a song haha)

It takes a minute to like someone, an hour to love someone, but a lifetime to forget someone. Being rejected by a person you loved can lead to something called “frustration attraction,” which causes you to want them even more!

To this day, she still refuses to talk to me or give any acknowledgement that I even exist. I think that losing my best friend is what really broke my heart, but in retrospect I think it was beneficial to who I've become today and made me a better person.

But... back then I didn't see things like i do now. Truthfully, my depression drove me to drugs. The drugs led to me stealing from family, self-mutilation (slitting my wrists), multiple jail sentences, skipping out on my probation, starving and a sickly-skinny appearance, stranded and sleeping in shelters, scrapping copper from abandon houses, and many nights of sadness. I am so thankful that I overcame that situation. I still struggle with many different challenges but things have definitely changed.

There's no secret to quick success, especially when you start over-and-over repeatedly in many different places. Since 2007, I've stayed in Oregon, Ohio, and California primarily...but don't forget about Arizona, Texas, Idaho, Florida, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, and now Washington too. I look at it like this... one day I plan on touring the entire world so why not get a head-start in the states?

The Blunt Raps tells this story through my songs...This is going to be the most straight-foward, silly, sad, serious, smoke-a-blunt and turn your sound up type shit I've ever recorded. Someday soon this struggling is going to turn into a success story, and then I'm going to surprise the world with tons of scandalous behavior and probably die at 27 as a rockstar... It sounds superficial, but I'm absolutely serious with everything that I say.

Long story short. I surrounded myself with shit I shouldn't have and tons of shady people. I slipped into the shadows and finally I screwed it up to the point where shit hit the fan. I should be dead from my dangerous decisions instead I am stronger then ever and see things differently these days. I have no regrets but will say I should of been straight up and honest about the circumstances I carelessly created for myself. Someone iLL spent the money to save my ass when really he shouldn't have... I am forever thankful I am still here and spittin'

Tech N9ne inspired an iLL-LEGAL Rapper (A Strange Story...)

From now on all music updates will be via http://www.EMATiONONLiNE.com and I will be using this blog for posting my life stories. This one is kind of STRANGE! (no pun intended)

After some heavy searching I've found some early-EMATiON videos where we were really just starting with iLL-LEGAL back from 2007. I decided it would be iLL to put together a playlist showing my less-then-stellar start in the music industry and my incredible commitment to continue against all odds.

This story begins @ The Music Box on 07/12/07 with my manager J and his better-half, Shelly as they cross-promote for iLL-LEGAL at the Strange Noize show. It's quite convenient that only a couple months earlier they had convinced me to give this "Tech Guy" a chance. I thought it was going to be another wanna be thug-life... type albums... terrible!

Keep in mind; I was 17 at the time, stuck-up, senseless, self-centered, and stayed away from that type of scene. Still, the second that CD started spinning suddenly my life had a new purpose and potential. I wasn't expecting the anger and emotion to explode out of my speakers when I first heard 'Absolute Power"... I was in awe, under enchantment. Two years of too much crunk, non-creative, circus beats with garbage gimmicks.

Everything I do with a computer (engineering, mixing, graphics, open-source coding, ect) and making my music is self-taught and far-superior to college curriculum. I always considered Rob Rebeck (recorded A LOT of Tech's earlier albums) an inspiration for creating your own sound. I give him credit for coming up with consistent formulas that we fancy today... for example, using a pitch-shifter, individual panning, compression, delay effect, gated reverbs, and other enhancements all controlled by a single-bus or cluttered layer to combine Krizz Kaliko's harmonies ontop of Tech's main vocals.

Hands down, he set the standard for the quality of music we've come to expect today. It's complicated to convey, but even without ever seeing his method or owning a similar digital workstation I can re-create any effect with my own personal touch. ( I am 12 years deep doing this shit)

Another element I was able to experience is Tech N9ne's AMAZiNG ability to perform during a show!!! He sets the standard for live performances; probably the best I've ever experienced.

I had to skip-out on the first show so we could afford to buy a set of VIP tickets to actually meet Tech N9ne in person at his next show in Anaheim, CA on 07/14/07.. Looking back a couple of years later, I think it's a higher power that helped everything happen absolutely perfectly the way it did. Here's how it played out.... TRUE STORY!

I was going to do something "extreme" to introduce myself to Tech... My strategy was spitting something extraordinary. At the time I hadn't perfected the beating off your chest while rapping (which I borrowed too, Thanks!)

Well, we screwed up and didn't show up during the "meet-and-greet" phase which was way before the show-time.... in-fact we were a few hours past the opening acts. Still-determined we went and talked to the security to see if we could maybe still sneak backstage. They squashed that suggestion and stopped us dead in our tracks.

We were defeated, demoralized, darkened-spirits, who could only see the situation through shades of grey..

I can't explain all gifts God has granted me but this is one of the greatest thus far! . Without any warning, something special happened that's hard to explain...

I saw a colorful spectrum of sunshine and someone standing nearby it who I could only assume was a member of the staff. I still don't understand why in a split-second, without even second-guessing myself...I asked...

"Hey! Are you Violet Brown?" (it was like I had known her for years)

Her expression was a mixture of complete surprise with a touch of suspense over-shadowed by a soft smile. I was completely shocked that she was exactly the person I had envisioned, but also completely opposite of what I expected... she treated me with passion, kindness, and concern for my well-being.... I was in awe...

She has the most incredible ability to communicate on all levels. Before I met her I admired her ability to analyze different sets data and create a consistent connection between both the distribution center and the consumers. After 5 years of my chaos I've created and constant disappointments in my personal life, she's still answered every call, showed me love when I didn't love myself, and continues to give me advice on life and my career at no charge...

If anyone ever deserves a lifetime achievement award, there's no better candidate you can even consider.

But okay, back to the story so she took us backstage, gave me the chance to rap for Tech N9ne... and then even chilled on the bus with us while we jammed Krizz Kaliko's cd; Vitiligo.

The topping on the cake was when Tech N9ne took me on stage with him and the Kottonmouth Kings while they performed "City to City" at their next show.... It's easy to distinguish me in the video because I'm the one who can't dance and looks like he doesn't know what's going on.... I can't wait till the day I can turn my nightmares into someone's dream.

One day I know you will get the chance to read this and remember you're part of the reason I'm where I'm at today. Thanks!

I live by the saying that two steps forward can truly feel like ten steps back. It is wise to direct your anger towards problems - not people; to focus your energies on answers - not excuses. I'm still learning from experience....

If everything went perfect in my life, I would probably panic. Plus, I find pride in my ability to provide to myself. Honestly, all this would be impossible without the people that push me to improve. If a problem can be solved, there is nothing to worry about. If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good.

Soon my posts will be much shorter and I'll be able to record all my emotions into music you can play. I'm praying to have a permanent place any day now.

I wanted to start by saying this...

I'm NOT perfect and admit I've made many mistakes I'm still trying to repair. If you leave a comment or send a message that I read and don't reply please don't take it personal. I WILL respond I just might need a reminder especially if it's important. There's only one of me... I mix all my music, maintain my websites with a special thanks to my big bro Sharx.us, make all my graphics, try to promote (HATE ASKiN 4 LIKES), shoot my own videos, and so much more without very much money to maintain. Yes, I have a manager and my iLL-LEGAL Records team but instead of millions in money... it's been more like millions of problems I've caused them and mountains of madness.

Sometimes I feel like two steps forwards is actually ten steps back but I don't give up EVER! I have a brilliant mind with a big mouth and no bullshit,

I'M GOING TO MAKE IT WITH MY MUSIC!

One day when I get my big break my life story is going to be a bad-ass movie; I mean blockbuster type shit. I've been through more things then you could ever imagine on my adventure for a better life. My friends have always been my family through the fucked-up & the fun...

They should make a term called "auto-blography" and have it begin similar to this...

One day around the 4th grade during an anger management session my teacher suggested I start writing poems to release my emotions. Since I was encouraged and eager to express myself I started trying to make a poem out of everything. I was around twelve when I started recording songs and practicing putting the poetry in music.

My perseverance and persistence came from people always trying to push me in the opposite direction of what I had planned. I think if they would of supported me from the start I probably would of gotten bored and picked something else to pursue. My Mom was always plenty pessimistic and my Father actually tried to place me in Mountain Valley mental health for something I wrote about my step-mom and sister in a song. I'm not sure how it went but I'm sure it was shady.

Later on in high school I got suspended 3 days for selling cds with a song called the Troy Anthem where I dissed some of the students. I applied more of myself my sophomore year fully focused on academics and athletics; I actually had all A's in every class. I made the Troy Anthem 2 but only shared it online & w/AIM in an attempt to avoid any further infractions. Somehow I still got suspended for 3 days and I was super pissed they screwed up my GPA.

Out of anger I made a new song called -The Treadmill Theory- since all my principals were overweight I really wanted them to run with this rap... the lyrics that caused my expulsion went exactly like this...

"you act like I should get on my mic and say, hi my name is Eddy and it happens to rhyme with spaghetti banana fana foe fetti fuck that, stab the principal with a machete on the levee and let him die fat, he ain't gonna like that"...

Almost instantly I was expelled from every school in Ohio and even when I moved to Oregon instead of high school I was placed into alternative education for troubled teenagers. I'm thankful today because this is the one event I can attribute to when I turned all my attention to making music my mission I MUST accomplish and maintain.

By my junior year I was tired of school, and saw it as a setback to recording songs. My step-dad sabotaged anything I would try to say or sing by stomping on the floor, screaming shutup, and even had the cops called on me after I went straight-jacket-status from his smashing my studio. So I did what any aspiring artist would have and smoked weed, started drinking, and indulged in anything I could think to convince my Mom sending me to Los Angeles to pursue music was my only option. J told me his idea with ILL-LEGAL Records and immediately got me involved with everything.

We were both inexperienced at the time with....

Intelligent investments VS. investing in individuals who have no idea about the industry but insist on entertaining everyone on instant success stories when secretly they are just stealing every dollar that was supposed to determine your distribution.

Remember back on Myspace when it said ILL-LEGAL Records~~/ Rudeboy / Empire Musicwerks / Universal~~... and the E is for EMATiON album that almost went extinct.

Well it all was an elaborate scam led by Charles Christopher, John Hines, Michael Joseph, and Mary Mitchell... and I hope it makes you miserable to know you missed out on a massive goldmine. Also, take us out of your fucking links, you were absolutely worthless and made me look like a liar when my album was never released.

No joking, I'm thoroughly convinced they are all undercover pedophiles who practice exploiting children with their "industry connections".

I'm not bitter at all, best of luck to you bastards. The best thing I learned with that whole ordeal is that if you want to believe something... just believe in yourself.

There's more to this story, but lets fast forward to after my album E is for EMATiON was abandon & when I turned 18; I moved to San Diego with my Grandma in Rancho Bernardo. I bounced around a bit before I met a gorgeous girl that gave me goosebumps. I made her a great song (Little Love Left) that I took for granted and thought that we would always atleast be good friends. I guess I didn't want to accept how we were growing apart. I was head-over-heels and HORRIBLE when we hooked up. (If I had even half the experience I have now and this happened, I can guarantee I would be more then she can handle) After I had my heart-broken I wrote huge messages filled with hate & harassment. I turned complete creeper and can totally clown on myself that I actually would call her crying and leave crazy voice-mails. I was confused and extremely immature in comparison. I can't deny my constant attraction to women who are a couple years older then myself. Cici was like a perfect picture I could never capture because I had a cheap camera I never could change... do you get the comparison?

I thought it would help me to heal if I started hustlin' hard the cash could create happiness. It never worked with weed; so I upgraded to xanax; then teamed up with cocaine and almost died while doing it. I remember it was August 26, 2009 & I had stayed up all night snorting lines and chewing up full bars before I drove to Mesa college. I can't remember making it to my class on campus because I blacked-out and collapsed, went into a coma, and came back after a couple of days in Scipps Memorial Hospital. (listen to 2nd verse of Beneath The Winter Snow & also the 1st verse of Nobody and you'll understand now)

It only gets better...

A week or two after regaining consciousness I got jacked for a lot of xanax, too much coke, and over 2Gs in cash. In fact it was facilitated by someone I was trying to help and his buddy, Bobby. They beat the holy hell out of me but instead of hiding I chased them out the traphouse and hopped on their car blood gushing out of my head and tried to hang on. Of course the cops were called so I created some crazy story that didn't fit the circumstances at all or the crime. Everything about me changed from that experience. I couldn't trust in anyone but a couple of close friends who I was always careful not to let get close. I changed my number, how I handled cash and how much I carried, and created a bunch of stash spots I could store my supply. The biggest switch was selling Oxycontin (beans) instead of coke.

Just so there's no confusion...

I'm a complete hypocrite when it comes to OC's. I couldn't understand how someone could smoke a pill off of tinfoil. I talked a ton of trash and thought I was better then that. Until one time while I was coming down from coke and starting to panic someone showed me the cure. No excuses, I could of checked out the facts first but I thought I was cool and convinced I could control myself. I had no idea in hell this was hillbilly heroin and how easy I was instantly hooked. (Listen to Can Somebody Help Me? closely and you'll hear the connection) The money was INCREDIBLE I could sell 10 of these little green 80s for $70 a piece and make $700 on something that originally cost me $300. I didn't need a scale, baggies, or anything special. Beans bought and sold themselves; business was booming and always getting better I felt like a BOSS.

but of course....

All good things must come to an end and that's exactly what happened here. One day I was stopped and searched randomly while crossing back to California. My car was a couple of blocks away carefully parked in Chula Vista. They didn't catch me with anything iLL-LEGAL during my first inspection.

While in isolation I assumed I wouldn't be searched again and wanted to see my stash. I should of just left them duck-taped to my dick but because I was delusional on drugs I decided I could cut out a spot under my sole of my right shoe and stick them all in there.

That's when they caught me off guard & said I could go free but first they had to re-check my clothing for contraband.

All I could think is "SHIT, I'm fucked I'm about to catch a federal felony fuck fuck fuck"... I gave the left shoe first and watched what he did... then with right shoe...it all happens so fast... the second he found the bag !!BOOM!! I snatched it before he could even see what it was & swallowed the bag. Meanwhile as chaos erupted all around me, countless border patrol personnel tried choke me out while I chewed the remaining contents to crumbs. *WARNING* (I tried this same stunt in Ohio and received a F3 TAMPERING WITH EVIDENCE so I don't recommend my method of madness)

Unbelievably, they didn't charge me with any crime. Instead they sent me to the hospital where I chugged charcoal to counteract what I had swallowed. As soon as I learned I wasn't getting arrested upon my release; it was adios amigo. Against the doctor's advice I immediately dipset and didn't look back. I'm not bragging by any means... it was by the grace of God that I'm not buried, behind bars, or brainless I'm just being blunt.

Thank God my younger brothers learned the same lessons I have before they made the same mistakes.

You're probably asking, is there really more?... this doesn't even scratch the surface, but before I start sharing extremely sensitive subjects I want to see if you like what I've started and share some similar experiences... I almost got sidetracked and forgot the next part....

Screw trying to sugarcoat this shit, I'm ashamed to admit I actually stole my favorite aunt's car so I could go to San Diego and snatch up some OC's for slangin' and to smoke. It took less then a week before someone reported a suspicious vehicle and I was stopped by a fucking swat team as soon as I started driving; it was surreal. It looked like a parade of police was pulling me over.

I lucked-out that Aunt Gina dropped all charges on her car but Los Angeles still extradited me on a felony forgery case from a few years back. I didn't realize when someone fabricates you a fake ID with false information, that's FORGERY and probably not something you should forget about. Men's Central Jail

(MCJ) is the largest jail in the world where you learn all about politics and that pain is your only pleasure or peace.

Also, since I had skipped my original court I was considered a flight risk and forced to stay incarcerated until the case was closed. The best part was there's "NO BAIL" when your an adult fighting a juvenile case so I stuck in a shitty situation where they made the schedule.

In MCJ the whites refer to themselves as "WOODS"... you don't ask why, it's just the way it's setup; you run with your race, regardless of the reasons or reactions. Secretly I'm certain they loved my songs but you don't rap around racist radicals without a real punishment. The second time I screwed up I had to scrap in the shower with someone else that had screwed up something too. We beat the shit out of each other before we both were too tired to battle anymore and called it a draw. It sounds stupid, but it's extremely serious when they see something that's not with the system- starting; they make sure it STOPS!

I think it's setup this way to stop the inmates from coming together to stand up for themselves and set standards. Also, I believe it's for the security and safety. Especially since the staff did not give two shits if you saw a shower, shaved, or ever slept. The could care less if someone stole your shit, if you were starving, or one step short of suffocating it didn't matter... I saw a man get sprayed and spit on while they beat the shit out of him with their sticks for speaking Spanish and not understanding English commands. It was more sickening and sadistic then scary. The experience is meant to make an impression and indeed I have invisible scars.

The release felt like it took weeks. When I was returned to the real world shit got way worse. I went to call my best-friend Thomas Moore and learned he had died of an overdose. I was one of the last to catch wind of the whole ordeal... I wonder why it wasn't me sometimes. Actually, a few months before all this happened we both slipped out of San Diego and stayed with my family in Oregon to get sober and start fresh... Instead of stopping Thomas found something that he could substitute in secrecy.

He helped me and held the camera while I made the song "Rehab Remix Video" (Watch on YouTube) where I freestyled about slangin' out of control and eventually overdosing from opiates. Unknowingly what I imagined for me, actually happened to him. The story they shared was that he was sleeping on his back and suffocated on his own vomit after being intoxicated and popping pills. I place part of the blame on myself because I promised him all our problems would soon pass. The EMOTiONLESS Video (Watch on YouTube) I made tells everything I typed thus far. Another track that talks about Thomas is "Jar of Hearts Remix" it tells the struggle we all face and must fight.

I've been working on a lot of new music, I'm going to keep just dropping new free shit for everyone while I still work on my album, The Blunt Raps.

I've recorded a video giving you a quick peek at my first few steps of making a song and a few mixing tips. Hope u like, comment, and share all that good shit. I wrote you a story too

I'm offering to mix 1 of your songs, send a tutorial and personally teach you some of my personal tricks and techniques for $50... this isn't going to last long.. after teaching 20 or so people I'm going to want to get back to doing my own shit. Sorry, just being honest.

Only if you're SERIOUS about really improving your sound hit me up. I'm not doing this for the money at all; my bags of weed cost me more then this haha. I'm doing it to help new artists that really want to express themselves and have a true LOVE for music. I will need to know a lot of different details first to make sure I can actually help you before I agree (where you record, equipment, programs, ect)

one day I'm going to write a book, I'm kind of a secret author I just don't usually share the majority of my ideas with anyone but myself. While I was working on the video and blazing a few bowls i just starting brainstorming on what i think is about to happen in the music industry, and what I want to do with music personally.

I know some of you will probably look at it, see all of those words, and say "Fuck that, I'm not on the Internet to read!?!"

Everything I'm about to tell you is just my opinion, my perspective on the music industry (and music community), and how it has evolved and transformed more than ever in the last ten years and why I believe the underground is going to eventually take over the entire music industry and kill the mainstream concept.

What caused the collapse of major labels? There are a ton of different theories on this, but I think we can all at least agree that it started with the advancement of computers, faster internet speeds, and the invention of file sharing programs, starting with Napster.

In one word... TECHNOLOGY.

Technology exploded onto the scene, and like the older generation holding on to their rotary-dial phones, afraid to make the switch to those newfangled touch-tone ones, record companies desperately tried to cling to the old model. With a death grip.

I think that if the RIAA had pulled their head out their ass A LONG time ago they could probably have beat Steve Jobs to ITunes - and made buying a song for 99 cents direct from the record companies as common as a major-label rapper who doesn't write his own rhymes. ( I won't even let anyone else record me, there's no way I'm saying someone else's shit). People are lazy as hell. I don't know about you, but I would probably have just paid a dollar before I went thru the trouble of deleting Napster and finding something new.

For a second just pretend....MUSIC is kind of like DRUGS. If you know me you know I have had more than my fair share of addictions. But I am WAY more addicted to music then I've ever been anything else in my life. Thank God! Think about this from the mindstate of an addict. What happens when you lose your source for drugs and you can't get them anymore? Do you stop using?

Hell no. You just go somewhere else to find it. So what happened when they killed Napster? Almost instantly, other sources took its place. There were IRC clients, Kazaa, Morpheous, Limewire, and so many others.. Nowadays you don't even need that. You can just rip a song directly from YouTube. Or just Google it... chances are it's out there somewhere, on the internet, just waiting for you to click
'download'.

Can you even remember when you would go to the record store to buy a CD? I kind of do, but those memories are fuzzy. The RIAA wasted so much time, money, and effort - and honestly only fueled their problem, instead of finding a way to feed off of it.

Humans in general are rebellious. If someone tells me I can't do something... it kinda has the opposite efffect they intended, and makes me want to do it more. Same concept applies with this... they shed so much light and focus on the issue of illegal downloading that they actually helped it grow to something they couldn't control. And even when legitimate download services like iTunes and Amazon took over, the RIAA's heavy-handed, anti-consumer tactics made people more willing to buy from anyone BUT the record companies.

To me this was the start of a long, slow decline for the recording industry. But industry was still the key word. We were still being force-fed the same record label-chosen artists - they just weren't taking as much of our money as they used to...

I'll tell you what I THINK is could really spell the end for the "industry"' in the not so far-off future... VSTs!

you might of just said wtf? Hear me out!

These plugins, VSTs (Virtual Studio Technology), have drastically changed the whole landscape of the music "industry." They have made it possible for anyone on a budget to obtain technology for free, or at only a fraction of the cost of it's counter-part, analog.

What would have been a multi-milllion dollar studio in the 1980s is now available for under a $1000 and more advanced. This created a whole new marketplace of artists in the underground... and even less of a demand to buy mainstream music.

Who is going to pay for something someone is ghost writing when there is so much talent, passion, and heart coming from the underground?

I own a few different Tech N9ne albums that I bought because I know it's support HIM and his passion for music. Even though I think that Drake is talented, I will never buy his or the other 99% of mainstream music. It's fake to me, I work in a restaurant that plays 50's and 60's music and some hip-hop lines I thought were really creative, this motherfuckers just STOLE!

How are you going to complain about people stealing your music when you are stealing other people's music?... I think more and more people are agree with me here then not. Look at record sales numbers over the last decade, they do.

What can a major do for you that you can't already do for yourself? For me? NOTHING. Look at the homie Hopsin, he is on MTV... without a MAJOR!

You MUST understand to make it to that level requires an INCREDIBLE amount of work ethic and EXTREME dedication. You can't rely on anyone else but YOURSELF. Seriously, you are going to have to WORK YOUR ASS OFF and KEEP WORKING CONSTANTLY. The more you can do, the more valuable of an asset you become. I just can't stress that enough, there's nothing EASY about being a starving artists... it NEVER gets EASY... it's work, work, work, and more work.

I won't lie with all these new spitters nowadays, it gave me the wrong mentality at first. I was a little resentful, thinking that each new rapper I saw was chipping away at what I had worked for, and I'm still working towards.

See, to me this is my life, and I've given up more then you could imagine for it.
In truth, I was that same kid rapping once, just wanting a chance to get my music out there. I remember what it felt like when no one was listening, what it was like having no one to work with me. I still get frustrated but it's only fuel to the fire these days...

With so many new people coming onto the scene, I see people doing this for the wrong reasons all the time. What's worse, I see rappers doing it for the right reasons, but not really giving their full potential.

You can't just spit a few dope bars and think that's going to cut it... you need iLL instrumentals, good mic presence, original concepts, and - most importantly - someone that knows how to mix your vocals correctly. I encourage that person to eventually be YOU if it's not already, knowledge is infinite... learn that shit!

I had the same misconceptions as you one... "make a demo, get signed with a record deal, and blow up"... Honestly, the majority of this industry is fucked. Almost everyone is ONLY out for themselves, and how they can capatalize off of you. Everything is HURRY UP, and wait.... HURRY UP, and wait again... people will tell you who they know and what this person can do... they'll exaggerate, or they'll just lie outright.

Show promoters will set up schemes where you're selling tickets for them, performing for them, and leave the show broke. Nobody gives a fuck at first, it's a hard lesson... but you should prepare yourself to learn.

I'm 22 and will FINALLY admit I don't know it all. Open you mind! Understanding life is always going to be a part of growing up.. but it scares me to see a whole generation of kids coming into a game that know as little about as I did starting out.

My advice to younger, newer artists is this: stay humble always.

Keep realistic goals. But be willing to take chances...

Reach out to an artist on Facebook you might not have thought would give you the time of day. Don't be upset if he doesn't hit you back, happen to me all the time. But for every one that does, be sure to give props to three artists grinding on the come-up behind you, too.

Push yourself. Test your limits. But never exceed them to the point of getting 'burned out'.

Most importantly, take it from me: don't fucking fall into drugs... ever. Let dope music be your one and only addiction... music will never let you down.
