The watercolor works of Chien Chung-Wei appear to embrace the spirits and temperament of the Western watercolor masters over the last two centuries. By age 32, his works tended to be delicate and classic and were reminiscent of the works of William Henry Hunt and Myles Birket Foster. After that, he gradually focused on the expression of the essence of watercolors. You can see the spirits of some great watercolor masters, such as Thomas Girtin, John Sell Cotman, J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sergent, and Edward Seago, in his works. In the meantime, he also broke the boundary between watercolors and oil paints. He created a series of works using watercolors and gouache and looked like the Romantic oil paintings in the 19th century. Those works totally changed the conventional impression of watercolors. His works are temperant and classic in colors with masterful brushstrokes, which endow every character with a rich fullness. He creates the beauty and intrigue of form even with ordinary subjects, and that’s the enchantment of his watercolors.

In the trend of the contemporary art, Chien Chung-Wei enjoys the popularity in recent years. This seems to let us reconsider the pictorial value of the classic spirit in painting.

In this issue: Thomas W. Schaller   About Spain and the workshop area We are very fortunate to live in such a privileged area of Spain: Girona province. Set in the North East just before France, our province has a very mild Mediterranean climate, with very little rain and warm temperatures all year round. In winter it’s around 10º-15º C during the day and 2º to -3º at night. It rains only occasionally and we can have a swim in our turquoise blue beaches since Easter up to mid October.But not only that: our coast, the Costa Brava, is one of the most beautiful in Spain, with the wild look of some beaches and coves in Mallorca or Sardinia, but also with bigger sandy beaches. Our workshop area, Roses Bay, in Santa Margarita beach near Roses, is a big sandy beaches, at the foot of Cape of Creus National Park, where flora and wildlife are totally preserved. That’s where Cadaqués is situated, one of the venues of our painting excursions. The other one,Castelló  d’Empúries, A very rugged coast with unspoilt coves and maritime life, wild landscape, lost castles and prehistorical settlements. Near Roses is the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, a bird sanctuary where they stop on their way to Doñana in Seville. Roses is the capital city of the area, at about 20 Kms. from Figueres and the Dali Museum, and 30 Kms. from France. I can’t resist the temptation to show you a clip of Sa Tuna, near Begur. We aren’t going there, but that area encapsules the meaning of Costa Brava. In September though, we will visit Calella, the last place on the clip.But lets get focussed, have a look at this Costa Brava from the Airclip, up to min 1.20 is the Cape of Creus area. Between min. 1.00 and 1.20, that is Roses. Enjoy!! Great paintings do not require great subjects, they are the result of intelligent subject treatment. By the sea in a big studio with lovely sea views, combining studio work with plein air painting. For many years, he painted watercolour series of the local scene where he comes from: Liu Yin has a sentimental attachment to Jiang Nan, a village situated along the canals of Shanghai. He’s recieved many awards for this watercolour landscapes, but since some years he is succesfully painting portraits and figures in watercolour.

Liu Yi is very fond of using wet paper where softness and thickness are created and blanced in harmony.  He knows the language of the water and exploits it to its fullest advantage.

Painting in quick brush strokesand finishing the painting in a high tempo enables the finished work to appear natural and unintentional, bringing out the appealing effect of the watercolour.

The fascinating thing about Liu Yi’s watercolours is that, despite clearly working with a very wet technique, he manages to achieve superb control of his subject matter: the figures are beautifully drawn and painted, the material of the dresses and shoes depicted cleverly and convincingly while fully exploiting the inherent qualities of the medium.
