February 3, 2012

New Year at EPCS

Time sure flies when you are having fun!!! And here it is, already February. We are definitely having fun!!! And as I look outside, I see nothing but (relatively) green grass. Where has the winter been?

As I look forward to the next few months, I realize that, even while this is ONLY February, this school year will continue to move along quickly. In a couple of weeks we have a week off (Presidents’ Week), followed by school events like Volleyball, Progressive Dinner, Young Artists Festival, Tenebrae Service, Spring Concert and Play, the Lap-a-thon, Track and Field, High School Concert, 8th grade graduation, and our first ever High School graduation! In there somewhere, in that space from now until that historic evening, our EPCS Board will be struggling (sometimes happily) with issues such as student enrollment, paying bills, dealing with (possible) shortfalls, budget setting for next school year, faculty hires, vision setting, promotion, etc. Please continue to pray for this group!!

You may have noticed a survey sheet in your student’s backpack this week. It asks you to let us know what your intentions are regarding sending your student here next school year. Taking note of your own support for Christian education for your child(ren), your financial situation AND noting that there is financial aid available to those that need it, I hope you prayerfully answer “definitely”, of course! Please send that survey back to us ASAP so that we can begin planning for next year. Thanks.

In all things, we realize the faithfulness of our God, and God asks us to be faithful as well. We have many unknowns ahead of us, but the most important known is God’s goodness and grace towards God’s children! May we be faithful in all things!!!

Tour and Information Nights at EPCS

MARK your CALENDARS! Invite friends to any of the three upcoming Open House events at East Palmyra Christian School. February 16, February 28, and March 15 (7:00 – 8:30 p.m.) will be “TOURS & INFORMATION Nights” at EPCS. The best advertising is word of mouth, so e-mail your friends, call them, or offer to meet them at EPCS to see the school, learn more about Christian education, and find out for themselves what EPCS offers. To insure transportation for next year, remind friends that applications for busing must be in place by March 21st.

Change for Education

Change for Education officially began on Wednesday, February 1st and will run for the entire month of February. The progress of each classroom can be tracked on the paper thermometers located outside each classroom door. Some thermometers have already started filling up! Keep up the good work!

Auction News

Thank you to Mrs. Admiraal who mailed out the remaining thank you notes! At this point in the year we have a need for some people to help out to get ready for next year’s auction. We have lists of businesses sorted by town and need people to go through the list and update it as to whether or not these businesses are still in operation. Contact Don or Cheri Winslow at 986-4240 or reroteacher@verizon.net if you can help. We’d like the lists to be ready by early June. If you would like to join the auction committee, let us know!

Candy Bars

Just a reminder that we still have more candy bars to sell. Feel free to sign out a case from the office. If you’ve sold the ones you’ve taken, please turn the money in soon. Thanks.

New Year at EPCS

This new year has brought on several “new” events in our EPCS life. This Wednesday we were treated to our first-ever student led praise singing. Singers Sarah Rosati and Natalie Goetz joined pianist/singer Trisha Lent and drummer Garrett O’Dell in leading the student body singing of “Lead Me to the Cross”, “How Great Is Our God”, and “This Little Light of Mine.” This Praise Group will be very instrumental in leading assembly singing in the future and may possibly be asked to lead devotions in future school meetings. We praise God for the talents of our high schoolers!

Also part of Wednesday’s assembly was the viewing of a PBS Newshour report showing fourth graders from Watkins Elementary School in Washington D.C. as they recited Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Each of the forty-some students took a line of the speech and spoke it on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial! Amazing stuff!!
“But let justice roll down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24)

New Year at EPCS

Well, we are back! And we are excited to be so!! After our celebrations, carol-sings, get-togethers, parties, worship services, best-wishes, we quickly moved right into our old routines. Not a bad thing, here at EPCS! Our Wednesday morning assembly, for example, focused on Christ being the Light of the world. We read and listened to scripture verses on that theme and the HS group sang “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light.” Routine here at EPCS? Maybe. But we are carrying on from the Light of Christ of 2011 into the Light of Christ of 2012. Different year, same Light. The Light of Christ does not change! A good routine to be in!! “What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1: 3b – 5 May we always desire to walk as children of the Light! May it be routine for us! I wish you a routine New Year!

Friday, December 23, 2011

EPCHS Service of Lessons and Carols

What a wonderful time of singing, scripture reading, and fellowship we had this past Wednesday evening as we shared songs and verses together in the Service of Lessons and Carols, presented by the EPCHS Choir and Friends. A cappella singing, quiet (and boisterous) Christmas carols, soaring descants, candlelight, awe and celebration, with a focus on the Christ of Christmas, was experienced by the sizable audience. We praised God together that evening! Thanks to all of you who chose to participate in this blossoming annual EPCHS event. Thanks as well to our five singing high schoolers for their hard work to make this evening so amazing!

Goats and Chickens

Thinking about those less fortunate than we, and using proceeds from the Service of Lessons and Carols donations (thanks to those who donated) plus some class funds, the EPCS High School students will give, as a Christmas present to the school, the gift of a goat and a flock of chickens. Yup, that’s right. The high schoolers are giving a goat and a flock of chicks. As a Christmas present no less! You see, our high school students are partnering with Heifer Project, an organization that helps underprivileged (USA) and third world families provide resources for economic and agricultural sustainability. On our behalf, Heifer Project will provide a needy family with a goat for milk and for breeding and raising more goats, and another family with a flock of chicks for eggs and meat and for raising more chicks, and, (and this is cool) Heifer Project will teach these families how to take care of these animals, how to earn money from them, and how to manage finances. We are thankful that we can help make even a small difference in the lives of those who are in need, especially in this Christmas time! And we thank those of you contributed to our fund at the Service of Lessons and Carols. Please know that we shared your donations with those who need them! Thank you for your generosity!

Christmas Wish

At this Christmas time, I wish you a very blessed time as you celebrate Christ’s birth. May you experience God’s peace and grace, and may you be surrounded by God’s love. And I wish you a very happy new year!	kv

Geography Bee

The Geography Bee is coming! This is a contest for students in grades 5-8. Students will do some preparation work in class, but it would be good if they did some studying at home, too. There are many websites such as the National Geographic website and the Sheppard Software site that have games and activities that might help. Simply spending time looking at maps and globes can also be beneficial. Talking about trips that your family has taken and finding the locations on a map can be a fun and meaningful study aid as well. The semifinal rounds will be held Monday, Dec. 19, starting at 1:20 pm.

EPCS Christmas Program

Thanks to all of you who came to the annual EPCS Christmas Program. With a standing-room only crowd in attendance, the EPCS Bands and Choirs made beautiful Christmas music in honor and in celebration of the newborn King! How good it was to be together and celebrate in community! We praise God for this Advent season and we live in great expectation of remembering Christ’s birth and of Christ’s coming again!!

Christmas in the Country Bazaar

“Thank you to everyone who was involved in making the first Christmas in the Country Bazaar a success!! Whether you baked, made soup, donated items for the EPCS tables, were on hand to work at the bazaar, or came and shopped at the event, we could not have done it without YOU! Together we were able to help raise approximately $1000 for the school! The vendors loved the event and are excited to come back next year! Thanks again!” – Dawn McIntyre

EPCHS Varsity Volleyball

Our team members and chaperones had a wonderful time in Canada this past weekend, playing Volleyball, seeing Toronto sights as well as those of Niagara Falls, and enjoying each other’s company. Statistically, we ended up in the middle of the pack, playing our matches in the higher-skilled division. We thank God for safety, for being able to play Volleyball, for Toronto District Christian High School, and for East Palmyra Christian High. Our God is good!

East Palmyra Christian High School Christmas Projects

Our East Pal High Schoolers have taken on 2 projects to help the needy.

Soles4Souls
“Changing the World one Pair at a Time”. This is a Nashville-based organization that provides shoes for those who don’t have them. In some countries, children cannot begin school because they do not have shoes. They have distributed over 16 million pairs of shoes to 127 countries including the US. There is a drop box at school and we will be collecting shoes until December 21st.

New Eyes for the Needy
New eyes for the needy is an organization set up to help people around the world who are in need of and unable to afford eyewear. Eyewear that is in good condition will be sent to medical missions and international charitable organizations for distributions to the poor. Proceeds from the sale of scrap metal, hearing aids, jewelry, and silverware are used to support the U.S. eyeglass voucher program.

Eyeglasses, reading glasses, sunglasses that are all in good condition

Hearing Aids

Prescription Glasses

Silver & Gold Jewelry, Costume Jewelry and Watches

Silverware

Please have your jewelry, watches and silverware in plastic bags.
There is a drop box in the school for this mission. We will be collecting until December 21st.

Candy Bars

The candy has arrived! We have over 50 cases (of 52 assorted bars) to sell so please contact Cheri Winslow if you are willing to sign out a box or two. They will be available in the office for pick-up but I need to know who has them. Please call 986-4240. Thanks.

Parent Organization (Circle) Meeting

Thursday, December 15th we will be meeting at school at 7:30pm to discuss the fundraising ideas for the rest of the year. Decisions regarding having a Dutch Dinner and a Pig Roast will be on the table. If we do not have enough help, we will not be able to hold these important money makers for the school.

ALL ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND! Please call Cheri to let her know if you will be attending this important meeting. 986-4240.

Friday Lunch Sub Sale

(This week only) On Friday, December 16th the 7th/8th graders will be selling subs for lunch instead of pizza. Your student can purchase a 3” sub for $1 or half of a sub for $2, etc. We will be offering Turkey or Ham subs with cheese and mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato. Additional toppings will be available should they want to add to their sub. If your student has a pizza account, the money will be deducted from that. If your student does not have an account, they will need to turn their order and money in to their teacher by Wednesday of next week.

“Bump-Set-Spike” Fun Fundraiser For Volleyball–You Are Invited!!

Mark your calendar for an evening of fun and entertainment–Tuesday, November 29 at 6:45 pm. The EPCS Girls Volleyball team will play a guest team, made up of adults–present and past EPCS parents and alumni–as a practice match, but also as a fundraiser for the volleyball trip to Toronto on December 1st and 2nd. The team will “pass the hat” at each of the games it plays, minimum of three games, so take your $1s, $5s, $10s, and/or $20s along. All money collected will help fund the team’s trip to the Toronto District Christian High School Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Our own resident whistle-blowing expert referee, Judy White, will officiate this extravaganza!! Come watch our EPCS Eagles VB Team in action!!
Added to the chance of watching some great volleyball, audience members will be invited to watch or participate in other events as well, including a Spiking contest, a Serving contest, and a Shooting Hoops contest among others. If you are interested in participating in this match as a team member, let us know. 597-4400
We look forward to seeing you at this first-of-it’s-kind event! This event will be a great send-off for the girls and one boy–yup, Drew Winslow is also on this team!
(We realize that this is a middle-of-the-week event and, with an early 6:45 pm start, you can still get home by a reasonable hour to put the kids to bed.)
