ESSFTA’s Top Twenty is an independent event held alongside the ESSFTA National Specialty, focusing on celebrating excellence within the English Springer Spaniel breed. The Top Twenty Committee has organized this event to honor the top English Springer Spaniels that achieved remarkable success in conformation, performance, and field activities during the previous year, utilizing the ESSFTA ranking system. Invited dogs receive recognition through an invitation to the annual event, a rosette, and occasionally a trophy to commemorate their Top 20 ranking.

This event aims to honor, educate, and entertain judges, exhibitors, breeders, and dog enthusiasts, while also acknowledging the contributions of breeders, handlers, and owners. The conformation competition serves as a motivational challenge for breeders and owners to focus on producing English Springer Spaniels that excel in structure, movement, temperament, and conformation, as outlined in the AKC-approved breed standard.

The conformation segment of the ESSFTA’s Top Twenty employs a scoring system that highlights key attributes from the breed standard. Each dog will be assessed independently by three judges based on their adherence to these standards. The top two dogs will be distinguished with Winner and Reserve Winner rosettes. Additionally, a People’s Choice competition allows the audience to vote for their favorite dog.

An Owner-Handled People’s Choice award is presented to the dog handled by the owner that receives the most spectator votes.

Dogs and their owners from both performance and hunting categories will have the chance to showcase their accomplished English Springer Spaniels to an appreciative audience, competing for the Performance People’s Choice award.

Standards of Behavior by ESSFTA Members & Guests Attending the National Specialty Show

The ESSFTA has an excellent history of maintaining its Specialty headquarters and show site in good condition. Rings, grooming areas, and hotel rooms occupied by its members are expected to be left with no damage, and as clean as possible, after the Specialty is over. As a measure of ensuring that this standard will be met, the following policies will be enforced during the National Specialty week:

  • No dog should be left uncrated in a hotel room in the absence of the room occupants at any time.
  • Dogs that constitute a nuisance to occupants of the hotel by continual barking or howling, may subject their owners to being removed by the hotel.
  • There will be no grooming of dogs in the hotel rooms. Grooming will be permitted only in the areas set aside for that purpose.
  • No dogs shall be washed in hotel bathtubs, and hotel towels are not to be used on dogs for drying them or other grooming purpose.
  • Bitches in season must wear panties at all times when they are in the hotel.
  • You are expected to keep the external and internal premises of the hotel and show site free of debris and feces caused by the presence of dogs attending the Specialty.
  • The Club will provide a committee to inspect rooms upon member checkout, either separately from, or in concert with, designated hotel staff members. Should any room or its contents exhibit signs of unusual wear or damage because of the presence of a dog(s), the occupant will be held to censure by the Club and shall compensate the hotel for all damages. Offenders may be censured, held in suspension of membership, or expelled from membership in the ESSFTA should circumstances warrant.
  • While the ESSFTA does not assume legal responsibility for the actions of individuals attending the National Specialty, it does assume ethical responsibility for their actions. The ESSFTA will make every effort to assure that any offending person make redress to the hotel or show site in the event that he/she is responsible for damage to the premises.
  • The ESSFTA urges all members to carefully inspect their rooms prior to checkout.
  • Litters of puppies and unentered dogs are not allowed at the Show Site.
  • All dogs will be on-lead at all times, unless required for judging.
  • There will be no exhibitor car parking in the RV areas in order to allow Emergency vehicles access.
  • Parents or guardians are totally responsible for the actions and safety of their children

All members and non-members of the ESSFTA are expected to adhere to the above Standards.

Without a doubt, Julia Gasow is a name synonymous with English Springer Spaniels and one of the most influential breeding programs in AKC history. Her kennel, Salilyn (named for her daughters Sally and Linda) lives on the record books and the pedigrees of today’s Springers. She lived a long life, passing away at age 94 in 1999.

A breeder for 63 years, her breeding program was involved in five of the six English Springer Spaniels winning the coveted Westminster Kennel Club Best of in Show Trophy,

  • In 1993, Her Ch. Salilyn Condor (“Robert”) won Westminster handled by Mark Threlfall.
  • Robert’s daughter, Ch. Salilyn ‘N Erin’s Shameless (“Samantha”), owned by Carl Blaine, Fran Sunseri, and Julia Gasow  and handled by ESSFTA member Kellie FitzGerald, won Westminster in 2000. It was the first time that a Westminster winner, Robert, produced an offspring, Samantha, that also won Westminster.
  • Ch. Salilyn’s Aristocrat (“Risto”) is still the top-producing sire of all time, in all breeds, with 188 champion offspring out of 92 dams all without the use of frozen semen. Aristocrat’s son, Ch. Chinoe’s Adamant James, was the last dog to win successive Westminster Best in Shows, in 1971 and 1972.
  • Another Aristocrat descendant, Ch. Felicity’s Diamond Jim (James), was Best in Show winner at Westminster in 2007, also handled by ESSFTA member Kellie FitzGerald. James was sired by another famous Aristocrat son, Ch. Telltale Author who produced 84 champions.

Julia Gasow was the first female delegate to the American Kennel Club, representing the English Springer Spaniel Club of Michigan. She was the president of the Detroit Kennel Club. She literally “wrote the book” about her breed—The New Complete English Springer Spaniel was published by Howell in 1984 and was followed by two updated editions. Three years later, she was the first inductee to the Quaker Oaks Ken-L Ration (now Pro-Plan) Hall of Fame. She won many other awards, and qualified as an AKC judge.

The Salilyn Challenge Trophy, awarded to the breeder of the English Springer Spaniel chosen Best of Breed at the ESSFTA National Bench Specialty, was first awarded by Julia. Kellie Fitzgerald, longtime handler for Julia, continues to offer a Rosette for this award in remembrance of her friend and mentor.

In the January 2022 issue of the Canine Chronicle, Elliot Weiss, recalled, “I was just a kid, I was in awe of her”—“she was a brilliant breeder—one of the best of the century.” Twenty-five years later, Weiss left handling, became a judge and now has become one of the most esteemed AKC Best in Show judges.

Julia will always be remembered for her impressive accomplishments throughout the English Springer and AKC worlds. As her friends remember her, “Julia Gasow represented the kind of “doger” (her word) who is hard to find today.” Her legacy will live on for centuries to come.
