Michael Jackson's memorial service has left me red-eyed and snot-nosed with a headache. But I cried not only tears of sorrow but of joy as well. In fact, watching the coverage live on ccn.com awakened all kinds of memories of Michael that I will continue to cherish:

- watching "The Making of Thriller" and being in awe over how they did the makeup and costumes (and cringing when they showed him putting on his yellow cat-eye contacts)

- cherishing my set of Michael Jackson photo sticker cards (my favorite was the one of him wearing a yellow sweater vest)

- repeatedly watching my VHS tape of "Moonwalker" (my favorite scene was the kid's version of "Bad", which--come to think of it--reminds me of Weird Al Yankovic's "Fat", also a childhood favorite)

- going to see "Captain EO" as my first attraction every time my parents and I went to Disneyland (I even still have my souvenir button at home)

- coming home from school and singing along to "Dangerous" on repeat (tonight I even cried singing along to Jennifer Hudson's rendition of "Will you be there", which was without a doubt my favorite song from the album)

- being glued to MTV so I could catch out Mariah Carey's Unplugged music video and belt out "I'll be there" along with her and Trey Lorenz

- winning 1st place in two lip synch contests for my performance of "Beat It" (I had ordered the VHS to History in order to perfect the choreography and got friends to play girl gang members)

Thank you, Michael. I will always remember the times. I just wish that your music and stardom had made you as happy as it did the rest of the world. Maybe things would have ended differently if we had all paid closer attention to and not so easily forgotten some of your lyrics. You were there for so many of us, but so few of us were there for you. May you finally rest in peace.

The Happiest Girl Alive

Last month I saw The Whitest Boy Alive at Astra, which had its grand opening that night and is my new fave venue in Berlin. In fact, besides Cupcake and Monster Ronson's, it's the ONLY reason for a Mitte-Fuzzi to venture into Friedrichshain.

The Norwegian band The New Wine opened up for Whitest Boy. Erlend Oye's musical legacy was noticeable (but luckily not overbearing) in their sound. I was actually thinking their music kinda sounded like the love child of The Whitest Boy Alive, Cut Copy and Phoenix (minus any homoerotic undertones that might have possibly been evoked by that analogy).

The Whitest Boy Alive were as amazing as ever. Throughout the entire gig, Astra was filled with this incredibly warm, glowing and happy energy bouncing to the band's pop disco beat. I even feel like all my blurry, slow-flash pictures of the crowd accurately embody what it actually felt like to be there.

Highlights included (but were not limited to):
- Erlende jumping into the crowd with the cow bell,
- the keyboardist wailing on his keyboard like it was a guitar,
- and all the covers of my old school faves from back in the day (in addition to the usual suspect Robin S., The Prodigy's "Out of Space" and Daft Punk's "Around the World" also made my techno/house heart go pitter patter).

This was without a doubt my feel-good gig of the year. And it's seriously no surprise I left Astra the happiest girl alive.

How Saturday Showed Me Love

The past year or so I've been complaining about The Whitest Boy Alive not showing their hometown of Berlin enough love. So imagine my supreme surprise when Saturday, taking a detour on my way home from buying miso paste at the Asian supermarket at Alexanderplatz and walking down Weinmeisterstrasse towards the U-Bahn stop, I glanced down Max-Beer-Strasse only to notice a huge crowd gathered in front of some shop, prompting me to take off my headphones only to hear an unmistakeable beat. I had "celebrity spotted" the guitarist in the neighborhood before, so I knew it could only be you-know-who.

As I approached, I only saw speakers but no band, so I almost thought it was just a random DJ set. But then I got up close and realized The Whitest Boy Alive were actually playing in the store window of ic! berlin! I only caught the last song and an encore, but that was enough to turn my shopping trip from mundane to magical! Unfortunately, I had neither my phone nor my camera with me, so I couldn't capture any of the cuteness to share (like how the keyboardist and the drummer accidentally banged their heads on the store window while taking a bow or how the grafittied window shutters slowly dropped down on them like a curtain fall).

So instead I'll just share a little video from this year's Melt! that I never got around to posting before. By the way, the entire gig they played at the festival was so amazing, it was worth the two near-death-experiences I suffered in order to witness it. I guess they do know how to show me love.

Comfort Tune: Lucky Charm

This week (or rather month) has been a bit Friday the 13th meets April Fools. Among many other things, late last Monday night, caught in a non-confontational state of mind and mesmerized by midi-like music and color-coded lyrics, I let my phone get stolen at Monster Ronson's Karaoke by a lipsick les, a dyke and a cross-dressing Satan.

So now I'm trying not to wallow in too much self-pity but instead turn things around in a St. Patrick's Day kind of way. And what better way to start than with a fresh pot o' gold (aka tonight's 25 million-Euro lottery jackpot)! My rainbow (aka theme song) for tonight and the rest of the month is by my old childhood sweathearts and ABC-predecessors The Boys (whose record "Messages from the Boys", by the way, is the first I ever owned!):

God, how I love this video! The moves, the hair, the clothes, the Boardwalk scenes! Takes me back to all my middle school dances and family trips to Venice Beach.

Sorry to anyone who's been checking this blog in the past months only to be disappointed by the discontinuation of posts. Summer just passed me right by, and I've been so busy I didn't even have a chance to leave a proper "away" message. So now I will try to make it up with a "be right back" message.

Over the last few months, I was busy planning and launching an online vintage shop called Immaculate Heart Vintage with my friend Meg. You can check out my selection of vintage home goods for sale on Dawanda here. Until the shop is completely up and running smoothly, I won't have much time to post stuff here. But I am also in the process of slightly rethinking this blog and will do my best to do at least a few posts a month.

And in the meantime, you can keep yourself occupied with "Off the Record." It's an English-speaking radio show on Berlin's indie/rock/alternative station hosted by my friends Liz and Vince (both of Death by Pop fame). SXSW 2008 Recap: Cut Copy @ IHEARTCOMIX/Mad Decent Party

I've got Aussie's on the brain this week. Most notably The Presets and Cut Copy (Bumblebeez get honorable mention). Saw The Presets at SXSW and Berlin Festival last year and Cut Copy two times at SXSW this year. And I had no regrets seeing either of them twice. In fact, Cut Copy's last set at the IHEARTCOMIX vs. Mad Decent Blowout Party gave me goosebumps. EsPECially when the enTIRE crowd started jumping in synch and i could feel the CEMENT floor moving up and down like a trampoline beneath me!

Melt! 2008 Festival Fashion Report

Yay! Summer is back from taking its own vacation! Though I'm partial to mild weather, it would've have been nice to have had it this hot the other week at Melt!. But instead, it was cold and rainy the first two days of the festival (it wasn't until the third day that we got to feel the warm glow of some sunrays). I was fascinated though, by how all the hipsters translated their urban street style into functional festival wear.

There was tons of eye candy, but for my Melt! festival fashion report, I shall focus on wellingtons!

I remember when I bought my turquoise pair of wellies at Urban Outfitters; it felt so revolutionary!

But since then, fashion wellies have exploded onto the scene. I seriously couldn't stop taking pictures! The most common motif seemed to be polka dots, followed by florals. And props to the guy who even spraypainted his own (apparently there's a gap in the men's fashion wellington market).

I admit, I love reading my horoscope. I used to be addicted to checking it every morning, and then at night I'd compare the day's prophecy to its actual events. Sometimes there'd be absolutely no correlation at all, other times it would sort of fit, and every once in a while it would actually perfectly correspond to a current situation in my life as if the stars really were looking down on me. And I just loved that synchronicity.
Over the years, I've started looking at horoscopes not as a forecast of what is going to happen to me but more as advice for how to approach whatever does happen to me. But even so, I try not to take them too seriously and prefer to relish their superficial entertainment value more than anything else.

For my birthday picnic in May I decided to make paper fortune cookies as party favors with song lyrics as the fortunes. I had lots of fun with it (and I hope my party guests did too!) and I thought I'd transplant the idea to my blog. So from now on, I'll be posting my "rockstrology" horoscopes at the beginning of each month (yeah, I realize I'm a bit late with July, but the month's not over yet!) along with a playlist of the songs used in the previous month. You might already be able to name some of the tunes, but I thought it might be more fun (and unbiased) to keep all the artists and song titles a surprise till the end of the month (and if you really can't wait to find out, you can always just google it).

Mind you, I'm not an astrologer (and I'm no happy-go-lucky, always positive-thinking life coach either). I assigned the song lyrics to all the zodiac signs at random without paying any attention to what was matched with what, and they are all open to your own interpretation. So have fun finding out what's written in your July (rock)stars!

Last Friday was the best Death By Pop since Coffin Joe's DJ set. Special guest DJ of the night was Jamie of The Rakes, who (despite a few technical difficulties) expertly entertained our dancing feet alongside DBP-resident xh. Copious amounts of Vodka Red Bulls (which I hadn't consumed since my early 90's "techno days") led to my unfortunate demise by dawn. But the road to ruin was fun. In fact, I should've arranged the photos in order of drunkenness. Although I'm sure it's not too hard to tell where my BAC started taking off!

Like Ghosts Under Rocks

I hadn't visited Ra Ra Riot(my favorite band from SXSW 07)'s myspace page in ages, but they're in The Virgins' Top 8, so after I had listened to the new Virgins album a few times, I decided to see if Ra Ra Riot had any new music up. And they did! I can't get enough of "Ghosts Under Rocks", which I'd only ever heard live before. Speaking of which, the only video I have of them performing this is like 15 seconds long! But here's a nice video of them performing it live at the Bowery this year.

I don't know what it is about this song, or this band in general. But I'm not surprised that they've listed their myspace profile under the categories "Healing" and "Easy Listening". Cheesy as it sounds, there's something in their music (and especially their live performances) that seriously just reaches deep into my soul. Like every song is a spiritual reawakening.

I was super sad that this is all I got to see of them at SXSW this year.

Mind you, this is with the zoom. Big tears.

P.S. Their debut full-length "The Rhumb Line" (recorded and mixed by Ryan Hadlock) is due out August 19. So forget yoga, fasting, whatever and just go out and buy the album this summer!

SXSW 2008 Recap: The Virgins @ NME Showcase

The Virgins were the last band I saw at SXSW this year. I'm still in the process of posting all my other delinquent SXSW recaps, but I thought I'd continue with them because ever since their whole album was featured on myspace last week, I can't get them out of my head (especially the song "Fernando Pando").

When I saw them live in Austin, I was seriously expecting some serious Strokes lookalikes or something. I even overheard this guy next to me in the audience telling his friend how he had seen the lead singer strutting around Williamsburg like an übercool hipster. But when they came out on stage, I was surprised at how they actually look like virgins (the lead singer in particular)! I mean, in person, they look NOthing like their sleek press photos (I didn't know whether to praise their stylists and hair and makeup artist for a job well-done or to sue them for false advertising!).

But in the end it's all about the music, which was without a doubt fun and catchy. Plus by the end of the set, I had pretty much gotten used to their nerdiness. It definitely made them seem more genuine, likeable, and dare I say cute (in an oddly attractive way)! Revenge of the Nerds V???

P.S. I couldn't put my finger on it, but Liz to the rescue again! She described their sound as "80's crooner pop." Spot on! And I think the singer's sexy voice is like beer goggles to his geekiness. *swoon*

Sometimes my bank likes to transfer my rent money to my landlord's account a day or two early even though I have the automatic deposit set for the first of the month (gggrrrrr...). At my last job, my paychecks were deposited on the 27th of each month (no fail), so that never posed any problems. But at my current place of employ, I never know when I'm getting paid (double-gggrrrrr...). I usually expect the worst (the 2nd of the month) and hope for the best (the last of the previous month).

So I was absolutely ecstatic yesterday (the 27th) when I discovered that my benjamins were already in the bank! While celebrating at the ATM machine, Liz and I both blurted out the "Money, Money, Money. Money" line from the O'Jays song "For the Love of Money" at almost the same time. And now (surprise, surprise), it's stuck in my head.

These other songs are so money* too, and they don't even know it!

* That is, they either use the word "money" more than two times in a row or just repeat it a lot.

The Long Blondes @ Lido (5/5/08)

Playing catch-up!...Earlier this month, Liz and I went to see The Long Blondes at Lido. I actually wasn't planning on going because I had seen them in Magnet a year or two earlier, hadn't heard any of their new stuff yet and wanted to save money for my London trip. Luckily, my friend Lars was doing merch and was unexpectedly able to get us on the list (bless his heart), or else I'd have missed an amazing gig. The material from their new album "Closer" leaves the 60's behind and enters the late 70's, early 80's with a disco/new wave vibe. Not surprisingly, Kate Jackson stole the show. It was as if she was channeling the extraordinary power of Blondie and Donna Summer combined. And the entire way through I was equally mesmerized by her seemingly endless mannequin legs. Eye candylicious. I'm sure all the fellas will agree.

West End Town = Dead End World

Last weekend I celebrated my 29th birthday with an annual trip to London that was full of ear worms and plenty of eye candy. I arrived in East London a little after midnight on Friday, and not at all phased by my quick jaunt across the channel, I urged my friend Gemma and her boyfriend Liam to take me out!

Conveniently located around the corner from her Hackney flat, Ye Olde Axe (basically a stripclub by "day" and a 60's club by "night") is in my opinion THE (still somewhat) secret place to go after-hours in Hackney. Good crowd (nice mix of hipsters and mere mortals), fun music and lots of dancing (but with plenty of room so you don't get clobbered by left feet). It was also here that I started photographically stalking (I did ask permission first!) and subsequently met Frankie and Maike, who gave me some awesome new thrifting and karaoke tips.

I forgot which look he was really going for, but doesn't Frankie remind you of Seymour from "Little Shop of Horrors"?! (In a very swanky way, though.)

Sunday night was girl's night out. Gemma, my other friends Liz (who flew over from Berlin as well) and Katja and I stopped by Electricity Showroom before heading on to The Dolphin, where we rang in my birthday at midnight. I'd been to Electricity Showroom before, but this was the first time I actually noticed the dancefloor (last time I mostly hung out upstairs). And I must say, I wouldn't expect anything less from a former electricity showroom!

When I win the lottery I'm totally going to have one of those built into my living room floor and hide it underneath a rug to surprise unsuspecting party guests.

The Dolphin was Frankie's suggestion, and I'm so glad we went cause we had fun, fun, fun till the bartender took the booze all away! Sunday nights is karaoke night, and though there wasn't always ear candy (other than us, of course!--haha--Katja and Liz sang "Crazy in Love" and I was tricked by Katja into singing my usual "Call Me"), there was definitely enough eye candy to go around. Especially on the smokers'patio out back. And since it's now hot hot hot, non-smokers need not feel awkward hanging out outside. Perfect conditions for getting your summer flirt on.

One-Line Wonders: That's Just The Way It Is

I don't know how in the world it got there, but it did. Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" interspersed with the line "Keep it in the Closet" from the semi-eponymous song along with the visual image of Naomi's glamazon legs (which makes me wanna run to the nearest ballet bar and do pliés till the cows come home) from the video of the latter.

So this was repeating itself in my head for most of the afternoon and the journey home from work. Is this what happens when single girls turn 29? And then! Between the U-bahn, the grocery store and the final walk home, I couldn't stop singing (in my head, of course) the alternating one-liners "Oooohhh, sex-y booo-yyyyy" (Air)* and "That's just the way it is" (Bruce Hornsby). Which I'm starting to think would make a really great Soul Wax-esque remix. I'm thinkin producer/dj in my next life? Oh yeah.
