Start by entering your target company’s name in the search bar at the top of the page and specifying “Search Companies” to find its LinkedIn profile. From there, you can see the names of current employees that are in your network, job openings, the names of recent hires, employees who have left the firm, and even the top feeder company and the most popular next employer among those who have left.

You can also choose to “Search Answers” on the name of a particular firm to see questions its employees have posted for other members to answer, their replies to other questions, and Q&As that mention the company. 1. Don’t be a job-search bore

Few people would walk into a professional meeting and ask for job leads, but many seasoned professionals commit the online version of this faux pas regularly. No matter how well you know contacts — or how panicked you are about unemployment — never mention a job hunt in an initial note to anyone on a social-networking site. “You’ve got to think of all the people who are looking for jobs right now — they’re probably being overwhelmed,” says Randy Hain, managing partner of Bell Oaks Executive Search in Atlanta. Instead, offer some praise or acknowledgement or, even better, some well-thought-out help or advice with no strings attached.

2. Don’t be too stiff

In the fourth chapter of Healthy Blogging, you will be taken through multiple ways of monetizing your blog. I will be briefing you about them in this post, but I will be publishing posts for each one where I will be concentrating on each one separately.

1- Ad Networks

You can easily subscribe to different Ad networks as a publisher and generate money through Pay Per Click (PPC) or Pay Per Millie impressions (PPM) campaigns. Google AdSense is the most known Ad Network on the web, but not the biggest cash cow according to various six figure income bloggers. There are much more networks other than Google AdSense, such as Chitika, Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN), Text-Link-Ads and much more. Ad Networks have a very basic concept, which is that the publisher (the blogger in our case) generates a code and places it on her/his site and then Ad blocks will be appearing to the visitors containing ads related to the content on each page. In this case of Ads, you should know that the publisher doesn’t have any kind of contact with the advertisers or their agencies.

2- Direct Ad Sales

What makes this model different from using Ad Networks is that in this case the publisher deals directly with the advertisers or agencies in order to have some of their ads run on his/her site. Both parties agree on either to charge on a PPC basis or a PPM basis, some others offer PPA (Pay Per Action). At the end of the day, it depends on what both parties agree on. To increase the chance of having advertisers consider your site in their media plan, you should have a well-built “Advertise” page, which I am currently working on.

3- Affiliate Marketing

What I like most about Affiliate Marketing is that you only have to sell the product to people without having to worry about the delivery, support, or the whole headache. Commission rates are fair enough sometimes, but it does depend on the median, I personally prefer e-junkie. Affiliate marketing is almost available for all products over the Internet; Hosting packages, Books, Workshops, Airline tickets, training courses and much more.

4- Sell your own Products/Services

The very first item that any blogger creates after his blog is up and running is an e-book. Regardless whether you have an e-book for sale or any other product or service that you can provide for people, such as (design, development, consultation, etc…), you should be offering them for sale on your blog.

If you want to achieve your financial goals, I think you should make it your only resolution too. Most people spend their entire lives intending to get rich but never make it, and it’s almost always because they never actually do anything

First, forget about planning for 2009. A year is too long of a timeline. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time remembering what I’m supposed to be doing for 15 minutes, much less an entire year.

Second, focus on today. Figure out just one thing you can do today to move yourself closer to the finances you’ve always wanted. Then do it.

Third, pick one thing the next day, and the next day, and the next day, until you wake up six months from now and realize you’ve already achieved all of your goals for 2009, and you have to set new ones.

During college, only one class brought me close to tears… calculus.

Call me stupid, but it took me forever to start understanding how equations, graphs, and numbers all fit together. I spent 40 hours a week studying for that one class and nearly fell apart after every test.

Ultimately, I got through it, but I started to wonder, “Am I really cut out for business? Doesn’t it involve crunching a lot of numbers?” I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life going through that kind of misery.

Have you ever felt the same way?

Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is business does involve some math. The good news is it ain’t calculus.

You can actually reduce moneymaking to one simple formula. It governs everything from your profit per product to how much of your salary you’re able to save and invest. And it’s very, very easy to understand.

What is this formula?

Put More Money in Your Pocket Than You Take out

Huh? That’s it?

At first blush, it doesn’t seem like a formula. Where are all of the variables, operators, and graphs?

There aren’t any. Like I told you, this is a formula for math flunkies. We’re going to make it as simple as possible.

Here’s what it means: only do things that make you more money than they cost you. If you do that, you’ll always make money. If you don’t, you’ll always lose money. There are no exceptions.

Let me give you a few examples.

Popsicle Sticks and Ninja Stars

When I was a kid, I used to take wooden popsicle sticks, glue them together in the shape of a cross, and call them ninja stars. It was great fun, throwing them at people. They were remarkably accurate.

One day at recess, when I was preparing to launch my next attack with a fresh batch of a half a dozen stars or so, a kid came up and asked, “Hey… how much do you want for one of those?”

I thought about it for a minute. “A quarter each,” I told him. He handed it over, and that was the beginning of my ninja star business.

It was a great business model. Technically, the profit margin was 100%, since I used discarded popsicle sticks and the school’s Elmer’s glue. Every sale put $0.25 into my pocket and took nothing out. It follows the formula perfectly.

The problem was supplies.

Within a week, I had kids lining up to buy their own ninja stars. I used to go through the trash cans every day after lunch to pick out all of the old popsicle sticks, so I would have the inventory to supply them. It was nasty work, but I had a business to run.

In time though, I couldn’t find enough popsicle sticks to satisfy the demand. I thought about buying a whole bunch of popsicles, eating them, and hoarding the sticks, but they cost almost $0.20 apiece. Add in the cost of the glue, and I would be taking more money out of my pocket than I was putting in. That violates the formula.

But then one day good old mom came to the rescue. “You can buy those at the craft store, you know,” she said. “It’s only about $5 for a thousand.”

I’ve never been good at math, but it immediately occurred to me that she had just solved my margin problem. In the end, I think making each ninja star cost me about $0.12. I could sell them in bulk for $0.20 each. Once again, I was putting more money in my pocket than I was taking out.

Within the next year, I’d guess I sold well over 2,000 of those stars, making several hundred dollars in the process. At the height of the operation, I actually had kids going door-to-door in their neighborhood, working on commission. Neighbors still talk about it.

Eventually, I figured out that I wasn’t really making that much money per hour, but it still taught me a valuable lesson about how to make money. Since then, I’ve started multiple companies in several industries, and they’ve all followed the same model.

The truth is, it works with anything you’re selling. Just make sure you’ve added up all of the costs, including materials, labor, and your own time. If it costs you less to make it than you can sell it for, then you may have a workable business.

Mom Goes Back to Work and Loses Money

Don’t have a business or product to sell? Here’s an example that may hit closer to home.

A couple of years ago, my neighbor decided she was tired of spending all day at home with the kids. She wanted to get a job and start earning her own spending money, even if it was a low-paying position.

She eventually got a job as a secretary, working about 20 hours per week and making $12 per hour. Of course, she also had to drive to work, which took about 30 minutes each way. Then she had to put all three of her kids in day care. With less time at home, she also started buying more takeout for the family.

Can you see what’s coming?

After a few months, my neighbor realized she wasn’t really making any money. After taxes, she was only bringing home about $180 per week. Day care for three kids was something like $140 per week. The extra gas was another $40 per week, and the food was running another $20 per week.

The end result? The job was costing her about $20 per week. Ultimately, she decided it was worth it because it got her out of the house and used to working again, but I thought it was an interesting example.

Have you stopped to consider the cost of your job?

When you add together your gas, car payment, mortgage payment, food, business clothes, and everything else, you might be surprised by how little you’re actually making. I’ve heard of attorneys in top New York City firms earning $180,000 per year complaining about being broke, not because of a low salary, but because of the cost of the lifestyle they are expected to maintain.

When considering your career options, you might be tempted to consider just your salary. Don’t. No matter how much money a job is putting in your pocket, it’s not worth it if it’s taking more money out. The formula for moneymaking is just as valid here as with selling products.

How to Decide Who to Hire

Who makes the best employees?

Companies have been arguing about it for centuries. Some say it’s talent. Others claim it’s intelligence. Still others believe its work ethic.

All of them could be right, but from the perspective of building a profitable company, it’s much simpler. You just follow the formula. Hire employees that put more money into your pocket than they take out.

If you’re going to hire Sally and pay her $50,000 per year, then she had better either make or save you more than $50,000 per year. Long-term, it’s the only way you’re going to build a profitable company. Start hiring people that cost you more money than they make you and you’ll go bankrupt fast.

The Underlying Requirement: Measurement

This stuff is pretty easy to understand, right? So why don’t more people do it?

Like most things, there are lots of reasons, but I think the biggest one is people fail to measure the costs of what they’re doing. They just guess that they’re turning a profit at the end of the day, neglecting to ever stop and add it up.

Then they’re surprised when they go bankrupt.

Believe me, the alternative is less painful. Take the time to figure out exactly how much your job, business, or product is costing you. Total every cost, no matter how trivial. Then subtract it from the total amount that you’re putting in your pocket.

Do you think you could do that, if your finances depended on it?

Well… how about $5,479,452 an hour? That’s how much Carlos Slim made last year. His net worth increased by $20 billion in 2006, which is over $5 million per hour, working 10 hours per day.

Sure beats minimum wage, right?

Of course, he wasn’t actually being paid an hourly wage. The companies he owns were making him money 24 hours a day.

But it’s an interesting perspective. Your hourly wage is the most important factor for determining both how wealthy you become and how fast it happens. It addresses the one factor that constrains us all.

Time.

The Ultimate Constraint

No one can beat time. It doesn’t matter how smart, rich, or famous you are. You have exactly 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Nothing can change that.

All you can do is optimize it. The wealthiest people in the world are the ones that use their time most efficiently in the process of making money. They make more money, faster than everyone else.

Let’s say you want to make $1 million. Your hourly wage is $12.95 an hour, and you work 40 hours per week. How long will it take you?

$1,000,000 / $12.95 / 40 / 52 = 37 years

We’re not taking into account living expenses, taxes, or compounded interest from investments. If you saved every single penny of your income, that’s how long it would take you to accumulate $1 million.

Now let’s say you’re making $120 an hour, and you’re working 40 hours per week. How long would it take you?

$1,000,000 / $120 / 40 / 52 = 4 years

As you can see, it’s much easier for someone making $120 an hour to become a millionaire. We’re still not taking into account expenses, but assuming they are the same four both people, the person making $120 an hour will get there much faster.

So, am I saying that everyone needs to get a job paying more money?

It’s not a bad start, but the point is not to get a better paying job. It’s to make more money in the same amount of time, no matter where that money comes from.

Sources of Income

You can generate income from lots of different places:

Salaries
Commissions
Stock dividends
The sale of assets
Money borrowed against assets
Interest from bonds, CDs, etc.
Based on what you’ve heard from others, you might think that some of them are superior to others. For instance, traditional wisdom says starting your own company is a better way to earn money than getting a job.

Statistically, that might be true. You have a higher probability of earning millions of dollars from your own business than from working for someone else.

Scientifically though, it’s false. There are lots of people earning salaries that are higher than the income derived from many small businesses. In theory, no source of money is superior to another one.

So how do you decide which one to choose? Figure out what has the best ratio between the amount of money it makes you and the amount of time it takes away from you.

The Myth of Passive Income

You might say, “Wouldn’t that be passive income like interest from CDs?” It’s making you money, and it’s not taking any time, theoretically making the hourly wage infinite.

Or is it?

In my opinion, passive income is a myth, or at least a misleading concept. Nothing is completely passive. If you spend one second thinking about it, then you’ve made it active.

The key to figuring out if something is a good investment is not to judge the amount of time it takes, but compare the time it takes to the amount of money it earns.

Take the stock market, for example. Many people think of stocks as passive income, and it certainly takes less time than getting a second job. The question is, is it worth the time?

It depends on how much money you’re making, and how much time you spend on it.

If you invest $5,000 and earn $500 (10%) for the year, you might think you’re doing pretty well. Only, how much time did it take you?

Add up the time you spent watching financial news, looking for stock tips, analyzing different companies, and organizing your portfolio. When you add it all up, how much time are you spending? Two hours a day? More?

If you spend two hours a day, five days a week on stocks, that’s 520 hours for the year. $500 / 520 hours = $0.96 per hour. You’re much better off buying a CD and forgetting about it, or just leaving it in your bank account and focusing on better uses of your time.

The Secret to Making More Money

Would you like to double your income next year? Here’s how to do it:

1. Add up all of your income for the year

2. Divide it by the time you spent making that income

3. Multiply by two to create your hourly wage objective

4. Spend more time on activities with wages greater than or equal to your target

5. Slowly eliminate activities with wages less than your target

For instance, let’s say you add up your salary, dividends from stocks, interest from CDs, and everything else. It comes to $52,563 for the year. After thinking about it, you guess you spend about 63 hours per week on the activities that produce this income.

What’s your hourly wage?

$52,563 /52 weeks / 63 hours = $16.04 per hour

To continue the example, let’s say your job brings in the vast majority of that income, earning you approximately $17 an hour. You also have some investment income, and after doing some circulations, you figure out its earning you $12 per hour.

You’d like to double your income, making $32.08 per hour. What should you do?

First, you might consider looking for a job that makes you an hourly wage closer to your objective. For instance, you might find one that pays $28 an hour. That’s still not quite up to your objective, but it’s much better. So you take it.

You might also start doing some consulting work on the side, charging $60 an hour. In the beginning, you might not get much work, but the hours you do work should continue to bump up your hourly wage.

Finally, you might start reducing the time you spend on your investments. Check on them less often, outsource the work to a financial adviser, or choose different investments. Either way, try to move the hourly wage as close to $32 an hour as you can.

Do you see how this works? Increasing your income is not a one-time event like hitting the lottery. It’s a process by which you methodically raise the value of your time.

How to Become a Billionaire

From the examples we’ve used, it still seems rather slow though, doesn’t it? Guys like Bill Gates, Carlos Slim, and Warren Buffett didn’t become the wealthiest men in the world by getting a series of better paying jobs

No… but I guarantee you they follow this thought process, at least subconsciously. They’re not going to waste their time on anything that’s not making them a substantial amount of money when compared to the time it takes. They just look for sources of leverage that make them exceedingly high hourly wages.

Two of the most common are other people’s time and other people’s money.

Just for a quick example, let’s say you are the sole owner company with 100 employees. You’re paying each of those employees $15 an hour. Through various means, they are bringing in an average of $30 an hour of revenue. How much income are you creating from leveraging their time?

($30 - $15) X 100 = $1500 per hour

Of course, you have to subtract expenses from that number, but it’s easy to see why the owners of companies with 100,000 or 500,000 employees become billionaires. They are leveraging the time of so many people that it skyrockets their hourly wage.

The same thing can happen when you’re leveraging other people’s money. Warren Buffett is a master of this. It’s true that he makes excellent returns on his investments, but the real source of his wealth is all of the money that is invested in Berkshire Hathaway.

But please don’t miss my point. It’s still not about how much money they’re making. It’s about creating systems that allow them to make billions of dollars in a short amount of time. You have to consider both the profits and the time it takes to make those profits.

Taking It Too Far — Over-Optimizing Your Time

Should you apply this principle to everything, using it to make every hour of your life as profitable as possible?

No.

Once people get this idea, sometimes they make the mistake of cutting out activities that don’t produce any income, such as spending time with their family or having fun. They justify it by saying it allows them to earn more money.

And they’re right. It does. But they are also missing the point.

I’ll go back to this over and over again, but the purpose of increasing your hourly wage is not just to create wealth. It’s to be able to buy the freedom you need to do whatever you want in life.

You’ll never be able to get entirely away from working to produce income. It’s almost impossible. You can, however, make as much money as you can in as little time as possible.

For instance, let’s say you want to dedicate your life to a particular charity. You’ll still need to do activities that make you money, but you might limit those activities to four hours per week. The key is making sure those four hours per week produce an adequate amount of income.

This is what people do in their retirement years. They may have investments that bring them several thousand dollars a month in income, but they’re only working a few hours to produce that income. Technically, that means they’re making hundreds or even thousands of dollars per hour.

The path to financial freedom is not spending more time on making money. It’s optimizing your time, so you can dedicate less of it to making money and more of it to the things you really want to do.

That’s how you become financially free.

I worked almost all day this Christmas. And I’m unashamed.

Why? Because, to me, Christmas is no different than any other day.

If I want to buy someone a gift, I buy it and give it to them. If I want to enjoy my family, I visit or call them. If I want to celebrate Jesus, I close my eyes and pray.

I don’t need a special day. The opposite is also true.

If no one I know needs anything, I don’t buy them stupid junk. If I’m sick of my family, I stay away from them. If I don’t like your church for most of the year, don’t expect me to attend on Christmas.

Why? Because it’s my life, and I can do whatever I want with it.

To some, this might sound selfish or weird. Although if you really think about it, I think you’ll find it makes sense.

Each morning, you make a choice: are you going to seize the day or not? Are you going to take charge of your life, or are you going to let others tell you what to do?

Personally, I’ve found the first choice leads to happiness. The second leads to misery. It’s even true on Christmas.

My mother spent all morning preparing Christmas dinner. She hates to cook, and by mid-afternoon, she was highly agitated and regretted the whole thing. Another friend went to see all of her relatives, but after the initial “holiday cheer,” they spent several hours talking about their problems and she went home depressed.

As for me, I worked all day, and I’m happy as a clam.

It’s not because I’m a workaholic. It’s because my work means something to me.

Right now, researchers need somewhere around $30 million to have a good shot at finding a treatment for my disease. If I had it, I would give it to them, but I don’t. So I’ll keep working until I do.

My real estate portfolio is hurting like everyone else’s right now. If nothing changes, it may not be able to provide for me next year. So I’m working on diversifying my income.

A nurse that’s been with me for 14 years is thinking about retiring next year. He deserves a six-figure retirement bonus, but I can’t afford it right now. So I’ll work until I can.

Could I ignore all of these things for a day? Sure… but why?

Finding a treatment for my fatal disease, protecting my income, and rewarding the best nurse in the world for 14 years of service just seems more important than buying gifts for people that don’t need them, spending time with family that I have nothing in common with, and celebrating the birth of Jesus on the wrong day of the year.

To me, a day spent in the pursuit of money is infinitely more meaningful than any of the stuff that happens on Christmas.

But then again, maybe I’m just weird.

It seems obvious, but not all businesses consider the timing of their launch You should always factor in when your customers will be in the right frame of mind to buy. Granted, you can’t always launch when you want to, but if you’re doing something innovative, timing can have a huge influence over the success of your product.

10. It’s Still One Big Crapshoot

Will the Kindle make it? Nobody knows for sure, but in the end, it doesn’t matter.

Sure, Amazon is putting a lot of support behind the Kindle, but they’re nowhere close to betting the farm. If it fails, a lot of people will say, “I told you so,” and their stock might take a dip, but they’ll still be one of the most influential companies in the world. There can be nothing worse than to login to Blogger one day and find you blogger blog gone, corrupted or deleted forever due to any unforseen error. Back up is very important. Here are a few simple ways to keep your Blogger blog safe and backed up….

Back up Blogger Posts

•Backup Your Posts – Bloggers Blogsend allows each of my blog posts to be automatically sent to my email address. So I have a back up of all my posts as individual emails. You can further create folders in your email account (as in Yahoo Mail) or apply labels (in Gmail), and create filters such that such emails can be collected in one place.

•Back up your entire blogger blog – Bloggers provides detailed instructions to create a single file with all your posts which you may publish and then copy to your own computer for use as desired. Remember to save a copy of your existing template in a file on your computer as you will need to have it at hand after this process is completed. This is good for a one time backup, but is cumbersome to do if you back up very frequently. Also you might mess up some setting and disbale your blog is not done right.

•Try third party back up tools – like the HTTrack Web site copier for Windows users and Webgrabber for Mac users. Each of these applications will create a fully working, interlinked local copy of your blog for browsing offline and easily allow you to back up. Remember it will take considerable time and internet bandwidth if you have a huge blog.

Back up Blog Template

•Back up the template whenever you change it. Just copy and paste the entire template code into any simple text editor like Notepad or Wordpad and save file with name like ‘myblog-date.txt’. After a while you will have a series of such files organized by date. If for some reason your blog goes away, just copy and paste the teplate back into Blogger and republish.

•If you have lost your template partly or fully – learn how to restore your blog template code and then back it up.

Back Up

•Blogger has an option to send you an email when someone leaves a comment on your blog. This is located in Setting > Comments option in Blogger. This enables you to collect all your comments as individual emails, much like the blogsend posts emails mentioned above. Then you can file them all together as labels or in a email folder.

•If you moderate comments, you can get all your comments as emails pending your approval. This email address can again be entered in Setting > Comments. If you do not want to save rejected comments as emails and recieve only published comments – then you can keep the comment moderation email address blank, while filling up the Comment Notification Address.

•If you use Haloscan Comments instead, then anyway your Blogger comments are off and Haloscan is keeping track of backing up your comments. I am using Blogger comments featured now with comment moderation, word verification captchas to combat comment spam.

BLOGSPOT UPGRADE

The new Blogger Beta has been around for quite some time, yet the option to switch to the Blogger beta is being offered to a limited few blogspot users. Even my earlier Blogger account has still not been offered the upgrade.

They mention some factors which may be causing the delay like -

* A blog publishing via FTP to a non-BlogSpot server.

* A blog with a Plus upgrade (we stopped offering this upgrade a couple years ago, so this will not affect many people).

* A team blog.

* A very large blog. (More than a couple thousand posts + comments.)

If you dont fit into those categories, then I guess the known issues and outages are delaying full public release (that is why it is beta!).

But if you want to try Blogger beta now, create a new beta.blogger.com account and they say you’ll be able to merge this account with your original Blogger account later. Remember the new Blogger requires login with your Google Account username and password (though the login form is still on Blogger.com).
