Fixed Layout ePUB

One alternative to dynamic ePUB is to create an ebook which has a “fixed layout” (only some devices eg iPad currently support this), in this way the page stays in the same layout whatever the device or screen size … equivalent to seeing an exact copy of the printed page on screen. The page will always look the same thus preserving the printed page layout, but the user has to zoom in and pan around to see the detail or be able to read small text, especially on devices with smaller screens than the printed page. However this format is ideally suited to coffee table books or highly illustrated children’s novels.

At the present time fixed format is only available in iBooks on the iPad and iPhones.

Dynamic ePUB

A dynamic epub file is one where the text and images reflow to fit the device screen (iPad, kindle etc.), epub was designed for this purpose and most ebooks do this now. This is a simple but ingenious way to keep the text and images all at a readable size irrespective of the screen size, but unfortunately, the original printed page formatting and layout is often lost. This isn’t an issue for black and white fiction titles but it can give an unsatisfying result for books with a lot of illustrations and photographs or where the page design is a key element. Automated routines can convert the printed page format into ePUB at a very low cost, however, good quality ePUB conversions will always require some skilled design interaction and QA.

This section attempts to define and identify all (or most) of the eBooks formats. With the great proliferation of formats a new user can easily become confused. The most important ones are always the ones that work on the device or devices you own but if you have a choice the most important ones are the ones that have the most eBook dealers or most eBooks available. Today these formats include AZW Amazon, MOBI MobiPocket, PNPd Palm eReader, and ePub. Another very popular format is PDF from Adobe. However, it does not tend to work as well on portable mobile devices due to the screen size. It is more suited to computers since it often expects full paper size pages.

As many reading devices settle on a sub-list of formats the ePUB, PDF have emerged as the leading list, with Adobe DRM support on both. Amazon does not support ePUB and insists on AZW which is the same as MOBI but the DRM is different. You often see TXT with TXT no formatting and HTML with eBook readers often ignores any complicated formatting. More general purpose portable devices will have loadable applications for other formats.

The idea of an open ebook format (OEF) that works on any reader sounds nice. Buy it from any source, read it on any device. In a few cases, it's true, and that open format thing can work for you. But, in reality, right now? You're pretty much going to be stuck reading books you buy for one device or ecosystem in that same little puddle, thanks to DRM. And well, Amazon.

The Hardware

Okay, so the easiest way to put this in perspective is to quickly list what formats the major ebook reader’s support. (Why these four? Well, they're the ones due to sell over 2 million units this year, except for Barnes & Noble's, which we're including as a direct contrast to Kindle just because.)

Amazon Kindle: Kindle (AZW, TPZ), TXT, MOBI, PRC and PDF natively; HTML and DOC through conversion
Apple iPad: EPUB, PDF, HTML, DOC (plus iPad Apps, which could include Kindle and Barnes & Noble readers)
Barnes & Noble Nook: EPUB, PDB, PDF
Sony Reader: EPUB, PDF, TXT, RTF; DOC through conversion

EPUB of Book Publishing

The reason just about every ebook uses EPUB is because the vast majority of the publishing industry has decided that EPUB is the industry standard file format for ebooks. It's a free and open standard, based on open specifications. The successor to Open eBook, it's maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), which has a pretty lengthy list of members, both of the dead-tree persuasion (HarperCollins and McGraw Hill) and of the technological kind (Adobe and HP). Google's million-book library is all in EPUB too.

It's based on XML—extensible markup language—which you see all over the place, from RSS to Microsoft Office, 'cause it lays out rules for storing information. And it's actually made up of a three open components: Open Publication Structure basically is about the formatting, how it looks; Open Packaging Format is how it's tied together using navigation and metadata; and Open Container Format is a zip-based container format for the file, where you get the .epub file extension. When you toss those three components together, you have the EPUB ebook format.

While we've only see EPUB on black-and-white e-ink-based readers so far, like Sony's Readers or the B&N Nook, the capabilities of the file format go way "beyond those types of things," says Nick Bogaty, Adobe's senior development manager for digital publishing. Unlike PDF, which is a fixed page, EPUB provides reflow able text, a page layout that can adjust itself to a device's screen-size. With EPUB, content producers can use cascading style sheets, embedded fonts, and yes, embed multimedia files like color images, SVG graphics, interactive elements, even full video—the kind of stuff Steve promised in the iPad keynote. So, we haven't seen the full extent of EPUB's capabilities, and won't, until at least April 3 and presumably much later. Even if the books you buy from Apple iBook store worked on other devices—and as you will soon see, there's little chance of that—don't count on the coolest stuff, like video, to be somehow compatible with current-generation black-and-white e-ink readers.

Publishing oriented services, but the price-rate they offer often varies from each other; I want to know if any service provider offers minimum price than any others for the same job, do they maintain the same quality which is provided by other providers but at a higher-price?
