An amused Akshay Kumar says his latest film has made an actor out of a hero. But his heart still beats for the fan dancing in the isle

After 24 years in the industry and more than 125 titles on his filmography, Akshay Kumar finds himself in a curious position. This is probably the first time his 'acting chops' have been recognised and it is not without reasons that the actor himself tags Special 26 as the best film of his career.

Not surprisingly, Akshay says he is not used to such adulation: "I am accustomed to commercial success but not critical acclaim — I am used to rewards and not awards. I am getting recognition, and that too from critics who had never written one good word about any of my performances till this film happened. This film has given me a chance to rediscover myself as an actor."

So, why did a 'commercial hero' take up such a different project, after initially refusing it? "At first, I did not understand the film. If you have seen the film, you will know what I am talking about—it has so many twists and turns. It is when the director came back and explained the subject that I understood the prospects of the project and I was shocked when I thought that I had actually refused such an offer," admits Akshay.

However, the actor refuses to consider the film as a risky project. "For me, it was an opportunity to learn. Previously, whenever I had asked Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal about their intermittent theatre stints, they would tell me that the process helps them reinvent themselves," elaborates Akshay, likening his latest with the theatrical process.

But before we jump to conclusions, Akshay points out that he doesn't see himself doing only such intense roles. "Special 26 required a restrained performance. But, every film cannot be like this. Certain films require over-the-top acting and those films have a mass appeal. I want to bring in a balance in the characters I choose from now on."

The film has also brought out a different facet of the star. A video of him singing a version of Mujhme hai tu has grabbed eyeballs online. Apparently the actor put in a lot of heart into the romantic number, which he has dedicated to his wife. But he also ensured the director didn't put his version in the film.

"The original singer's voice is much better. I am a non-singer. I know my limitations." As for the sequel to the Neeraj Pandey film, Akshay shrugs it off. "It's too early," he says.

The director has just started working on the script and says once the script is ready, he will start looking for the cast. “Once it is complete, I will finalise the casting and then we will start shooting. But I don’t want to talk about it as of now,” he said. Anubhav Sinha’s forthcoming ‘Gulab Gang’ is much into news as it marks the comeback of Madhuri Dixit in the film industry. The film is inspired by Sampat Pal-led Gulabi Gang in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, which fights for the rights of women in the region. Directed by Soumik Sen, the shooting of the film will start in December and the first schedule will be shot in Bombay.

“I couldn’t have pulled off a better cast than the two most iconic female stars, Madhuri and Juhi, together for the first time on Indian screen,” he said adding, “We were working on the looks of the actresses, now we are ready to roll. Since the film is based in rural India, both of them will be seen in a de-glam avatar and will have a rustic look.”

Kahaani was a thriller directed, co-written and co-produced by Sujoy Ghosh. The film features Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. Balan portrays the role of Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband in the city of Kolkata during the Durga Puja festivities, who is helped in her quest by Satyaki “Rana” Sinha (Chatterjee) and Khan (Siddiqui). Despite a contrived culmination in the climax, this was a taut, gripping, thriller with memorable performances from each member of the unique ensemble. While Vidya held it all together, it was the lesser known faces supporting her, who provided the extra edge. Kahaani released worldwide on 9 March 2012 to major critical acclaim. Critics praised the screenplay, the cinematography and the performances of the lead actors. Word-of-mouth publicity and good critical response paved the way for Kahaani’s commercial success at the box office.
Paan singh tomar
The movie is a biography based on the true story of an athlete Paan Singh Tomar employed by the Indian Army and who won a gold medal at Indian National Games, but was forced to become a notorious bandit. It is directed byTigmanshu Dhulia and produced by UTV Motion Pictures. Irrfan plays the titular role, with Mahie Gill, Vipin Sharma and Nawazuddin Siddiqui portraying supporting roles. Benefiting immensely from an outstanding performance by Irrfan Khan, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s film made a hard-hitting point, and posed difficult questions about how this country treats its sporting heroes. The movie’s runaway success was like a shot-in-the-arm for unconventional cinema.
Gangs of Wasseypur (Part 1 and 2)
Anurag Kashyap successfully weaved in five hours of blood, gore and fun. Packed with smart dialogue, “Gangs of Wasseypur” was an experiment with revenge saga that went right. The grime of the coal mines, the edgy characters and a great ensemble cast meant that audiences left the cinema sated. It centers around power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families.
