In fact, only Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards are possible champions in 2011.

Out of those two, I believe Tony Stewart will make up his three point deficit, at Homestead, and win his third Cup.

If for no other reason than champions tend to be beat first time challengers in tight races. In other words, Tony knows the way to the Sprint Cup.

Carl will make it interesting but I believe he will falter because of nerves and one little bobble is all Stewart will need.

If you think after five races, of a ten race format, a single driver is out of contention it means only one thing. You slept through grade school mathematics. Sure you may believe certain drivers aren't likely to win the Cup. You may state it is improbable for some drivers to win the 2011 championship. But to report, as most of the math deprived minds of Speed as been reporting as if it's true, that only the first handful of drivers in the standings have a chance to win is simply the same as hanging a sign around their necks saying, "I am too stupid to comprehend basic arithmetic."

It's a simple math fact which dictates who of the Chase drivers has a chance for the Sprint Cup Championship and who does not. The fact is, contrary to anything Speed TV reports is; any points that have been obtained in the first five races by any driver can be obtained by any other driver in the last five races. In other words Dale Earnhardt, JR can do in the last five what Carl Edwards did in the first five and vice versa.

This makes the Chase wide open!

After today's race in Talladega, when the Chase is more than half over, will you start to see mathematical probability start to lean heavier and heavier towards the leader. But still I would guess and it's only a guess, it will be three weeks before we see one of the twelve Chasers completely without a chance.

Until then, it may be a long shot but in the immortal words of Lloyd Christmas when he told he had like one out of a million chance, " So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!"

The one where Dale Jr should ride in on a winged horse and save NASCAR from that evil villain Brian France

The camp who thinks Dale Jr complains too much.

The third camp is the one I live in. I think Dale Jr often says what's on his mind and gets nothing but grief for it. I don't think he complains any more than any other employee at any other job but he does complain. I also don't think, because of his magical name, it is his responsibility to fix NASCAR. No more than I would think it was Ella Gordon's job.

Dale Jr is not the driver's union rep - he is their competition.

As far as the style of racing that many of us "old fans" dislike, Junior is caught in a place I wouldn't wish on Kyle Busch. Do I think the heralded car of tomorrow makes racing boring? Yes I most certainly do. Do I think it saves lives? Yes I most certainly do.

So should Dale Jr, as many people suggest, go to NASCAR and demand the old car back? The one that his Dad died in? The one he won 17 races while driving? You would have to be simple to believe the answer is yes!

I do not care how boring the racing appears I wouldn't ask one driver to risk his life to change it. Maybe that's because I am an "old fan". I was watching this sport on taped delays long before Dale Earnhardt first drove a Winston Cup car and I have faith in NASCAR to fix their own problems through evolution and not revolution.

Unfortunately evolution is sometimes slow. Too slow for many modern fans.

NASCAR, I believe will fix the racing problems but in the mean time they will put the safety of the drivers above all else. This I agree with with all my heart.

I never again want to feel the way I did on February 18, 2001. I do NOT care if it means Junior never winning another race.

Last weekend, racing lost a good man - Dan Wheldon. If it wasn't for the safety concerns of NASCAR we could of lost two.

Look up footage of DaleEarnhardt's wreck and compare it to Jimmie Johnson's wreck at Charlotte. which one would you guess the driver died?

Next time you think Brian France and NASCAR has ruined our sport remember they also may have kept a simple sport from ruining the life of Genevieve Johnson.

In the old car, she might of grown up to be the daughter of a legend, who barely remembers her father like Taylor Earnhardt.

Ask Taylor; if the racing, while NASCAR figures it out, being less boring, is worth it?

She lost a father we only lost a hero so you can probably figure out her answer.

Before I finish, I do want to mention to those of you who believe Dale Jr should swoop in on winged horseback to fix NASCAR, have you ever considered one fact?

It's entirely possible that Dale Earnhardt himself already swooped in, at the wheel of the THREE and fixed NASCAR, ten years ago by losing his life.

I do not know Brian France nor Mike Helton but I would guess the thing they are most proud of in the sport people accuse them of ruining is;

NASCAR has not lost a driver during competition since Dale Earnhardt.

If not - it should be.

In the immortal words of Bluto, "What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is!
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

Charlotte Motor Speedway

There is still six races left and I for one will not give up until the checkered flag falls on Homestead.

Charlotte was a done deal on Memorial Day weekend. Junior was headed for his first win since 2008 and I was standing and cheering. Then his car slowed, his engine sputtered and he coasted home with no fuel and a seventh place finish. Tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow has to be better.

Today in practice Junior looked and sounded good on the final runs of Happy Hour. I believe, as I always do, Charlotte will be a good night for us - his fans.

Remember TOMORROW NIGHT - NOT SUNDAY! To see Dale Jr break his winless streak and start a charge to the Cup only an Earnhardt could pull off.
Dale Jr now sits ninth in the standings, 43 points behind leader Carl Edwards. Forty-three points means he is realistically one whole race behind. If Junior was to win next week (and he will) he would receive 43 points. If Carl was to finish last he would receive 1 point. So not counting bonus points, it would take Junior more than one race to catch up even in the best case scenario.

This is certainly not good news.

What was and is, good news for me (and you if you are interested and quick) is a friend of mine who has been hoarding 16 autographed pictures of Junior waiting for him to win the cup has given up hope. His thinking was when Junior wins the cup these pictures which sale at some sports collector stores for more than $150.00 a piece would be worth twice that much.

When he told me he had decided to sell the pictures I immediately told him Junior still had a chance. He then laughed at me and said, "If you think so why don't you buy some.

Just to show my support I bought three! I would of bought them all but I would of lost custody of them in the divorce, when my wife found out any way, so that wasn't an option.

Sure my support cost me more than three hundred dollars but who can put a price tag on loyalty. When I say, "who", I mean besides my good friend Dave. But as Dave correctly pointed out at least it didn't cost me the going rate of $471 or the speculative price of $900 for three autographed pics.
So you see, Kansas was not a total loss for me. Besides my buy will double when Junior does win the Cup. Not that I would ever sell but it will be fun to see Dave's face when it happens.

If you want to make the pain of Kansas go away, Dave still has pictures left and I am sure you can talk him into PayPal if you are interested.

Give him a call: 1-800-339-0121 and tell him you want the Earnhardt loyalty price.
Our favorite son had a fast car and he still finished 24th due to broke suspension parts and loose lug nuts. This follows the race at New Hampshire where two flat tires runed Dale Jr's day.

This puts Junior in 10th place, 34 points behind Chase leader Kevin Harvick. If you read me regularly you know this is where I find the good news in the past race. I have searched and I did find a couple of slivers of information to brighten our day. The 88 was fast - real fast. The other good news is; we are only three races into the Chase and we have six tracks coming up where Dale Jr has had success.

Next week is Kansas where Junior finished second in the Spring. Then we go to Charlotte. You remember Charlotte? It was where Dale Jr ran out of gas on the last lap while leading and finished seventh last Memorial Day weekend. After that is Talladega. If you don't know about Talladega and the Earnhardts you are reading the wrong blog. I'll give you a hint, if Kannapolis is ground zero of the Earnhardt Nation, Talladega is our vacation home. Last time Sprint Cup visited Alabama Dale pushed Jimmie to victory with what looked like the fastest car on the track. After that it's Martinsville, Junior finished second there in April. After they visit Virginia it's Texas - the place where Junior won for the first time in both Nationwide and Sprint Cup. Then in the season's next to last race NASCAR goes to Phoenix where Junior has won twice.

So you see, we may be down but not out. It may seem dismal but there is a lot of racing to do. Remember even with tire, suspension and lug nut problems Earnhardt fans can take comfort in the fact the last three races has shown the 88 team can put a championship caliber car on the track and that's the hard part. We know we have a driver capable of winning and our team is basically the same team, Chad Knaus called on to pit the 48 when the championship was on the line, last year.

So it's not time to give up it's time to stand up and Cheer Dale Earnhardt Jr to a championship.

Dale Jr may have only finished 17th but it was still encouraging. His car was far better than where it finished. Junior even said he thought he had a chance of winning. Remember Junior is a driver who is brutally honest in post race, about his car, so when he says he thought it may have been a winning car, you should believe him.

Two flat tires are not good but what was good was the show of horse power and handling the 88 demonstrated. I even took comfort from the fact Junior didn't curse the tires. He knew, on a relatively flat track, camber was the culprit but it was also needed to make the car turn. Just facts, not excuses was how I took it.

Dale Jr now sits eighth in the standings a drop of three places. Even that is not as bad as it sounds. Only five drivers have more points than Junior. Two more have the same amount - Kyle Busch and Kenseth. Dale is listed as eighth because Kenseth and Ky Bush hold tie breakers over him. So in all actuality the 88 is tied for sixth - 26 points behind Tony Stewart.

If Stewart keeps winning the points aren't going to matter any way but that's unlikely. What does matter more at this juncture, with eight races to go, is the drivers ahead of Junior. The less drivers he has to catch, obviously the better. Mathematically a driver within 375 points can still win. Not probable but possible. But if JR stays in the standing eighth to eleventh (sorry Denny) it's going to be hard to out point that many drivers. But sitting in sixth he has a chance in the next few weeks to climb a few spots. Maybe get into fourth by Talladega. Passing Edwards and Keselowski shouldn't be too bad. ESPN's favorite racer, Cousin Carl's time to choke is about here. Then there is BK, whose crew chief makes idiot calls and gets lucky. I think luck is about to swing away from the Two, like it has a habit of doing to everyone who relies on it.

That leaves Smoke, Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Dale in the top four and the House the Earnhardts Built next. With the new restrictor plate rule, increasing horse power, look for Dale Jr to capture past magic and break his winless streak at Talladega. Where else could it possibly be better?

Then it's four races and four drivers fighting for a championship. The son of a legend against the man who drives for his father's old team and a two time champ and a four time champ.

Could NASCAR wish for anything better?

The only thing I wouldn't discount is the 48. Johnson may have stumbled but people who win five championships never fall and I wouldn't be surprised if our hero still has to contend with his stable mate before this Chase is through.

No matter, if I am exactly right or a tiny bit off, I still look for this to be a great Chase and Dale Earnhardt Jr to be right in the middle of it.

So buckle up and hang on - you won't want to miss it!
I think so. Right now being an Earnhardt fan is better than any time since he was with D.E.I. He's in the Chase. He had a top five finish in the first Chase race and qualified respectable in the second.

Things are good - most of the time.

Then there are the mornings I am listening to NASCAR on satellite radio and some idiot caller has to try to ruin my day. Yesterday was one of those days. The idiot in this case expressed his moronic view that Dale Jr only finished third in Chicago because everyone else ran out of fuel. He thought the 88 deserved a 16th place finish. I guess I didn't realize Junior had a bigger fuel tank than the other cars or better fuel mileage than the Chevy's. I guess I was under the impression Dale Jr was under the same circumstances as everyone else on the track. What I thought I saw was a mediocre car Steve LeTarte adjusted into a fast car and Junior drove it into sixth place before the drivers, who obviously are not as skilled at saving fuel as my driver, pushed their luck and depleted their tank of Sunoco fuel.

All three of them!

That's right the difference between where Junior was and where he finished when people started running out of gas was three spots. It wasn't thirteen like some idiots believe. The idiot I thinking of has nothing better to do then call radio shows and show the world his brain is the size of a valve stem cap.

Of course that is his right but why does he have to do it while I am listening?

It just makes me look forward to Homestead and a Cup that much more!
Dale Jr, who started in 19th stayed around there for about two hundred laps and it caused a great deal of anxiety among his fans and I am guessing great joy to his detractors.

Then the magic began.

Whether it was Steve LeTarte's adjustment or Junior taking advantage of drivers saving fuel I don't care. What ever it was it worked.

I believe Dale, when he said his car was one of the fastest towards the end of the race. Sure other drivers were saving fuel but obviously so was Dale, while kicking their butts or he wouldn't of finished third.

Now the bad news; Junior actually is now one point farther out of first than he was at the start of the race. On face value this looks bad. It isn't!

Dale Earnhardt Jr started today twelve points back with eight drivers having more points. Now he is thirteen points back with only four drivers with more points.

Cutting the field in front of him in half far out weighs him being one measly point farther back. Plus remember on the next eight tracks Dale has the best average finishes this year.

Trust me when I say, 2011 is going to be a NASCAR Chase worth watching, if you are an Earnhardt fan.

Welcome back momentum!
First of all, he is of course deserving because he accomplished the requisites to obtain a spot but let's look at it deeper.

Most of the people thought because he is winless he shouldn't be in. Funny I didn't hear them say the same things about Tony Stewart who is also winless. However I doubled checked the rules and no where did I see a clause stating a driver must have a least one win to get into the Chase. So that's an uneducated view.

A couple of them defended Junior but while I was listening he was bad mouthed pretty good. Everything from undeserving, to predictions of him finishing twelfth. One idiot actually stated he thought Jimmie Johnson was the reason Junior was in the Chase. Patterson disagreed with him much to his credit. But all this got me to wondering.

How did the twelve drivers do on the Chase tracks that have been previously run this year?

Eight of the tracks meet that criteria. Only Chicago and Homestead are not on the list. Now before I get into this, remember I drink a lot of tequila and coffee and sleep very little so maybe I made a mistake but I did double check my work and I think it's solid.

Before we go further click on this link and check my chart. It's pretty interesting!

As you can see Junior has the lowest average finish among the drivers on 2011 Chase tracks. How many of you knew that or even would of guessed? Not many I bet.

Dale has nine top tens and six of them came on Chase tracks. Junior has only three top fives this year but they all came on Chase tracks.Consistency is what got Junior into the Chase and it shows most of all on Chase tracks where he finished no lower than 15th.

Not a bad sign for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.

So next time Larry McReynolds or some other Dale Jr detractor, says he doesn't have a chance, feel free to mention my chart.

You will enjoy the look on their face...I promise!

Junior needs a twentieth or better to secure his place in the Chase. If he doesn't finish twentieth he has to be within about twenty spots of Keselowski's finish depending on laps lead.

So the question is - can Dale Jr do it?

Of course he can! He is Dale Earnhardt Jr!

He will make the Chase. He will also make Richmond worth watching. It may be the most exciting Richmond race since the time Junior's brakes failed and he had to drive the last 45 laps without them. Wow was his radio on fire that night! Him and Tony Jr were hilarious but they brought the Budweiser Chevy home in 17th and earned a Chase spot. Junior and LeTarte will do the same tonight (Saturday).

So no it's not time to worry.

Then the next question is - can Junior compete for a Championship? The rumor is; Jimmie Johnson has stock piled ten great cars for the Chase. Correct me if I am wrong but his garage mate is the 88. Now Dale might not be in a position to have had the luxury of shelving the ten best cars but I would bet they have ten pretty good ones sitting straight across the 48-88 shop from the Lowes fleet.

Look for this years Championship to be a free for all between the Hendrick's three Chase qualifiers, Gordon, Johnson and Earnhardt.

By the time NASCAR rolls out of Talladega, the Toyotas, Dodges and Fords will be prepping for next year, while Rick Hendrick's four year old dream comes true. He will finally see a five time champ, a four time champ and the son of a seven time champ battle for the sport's biggest prize - The Sprint Cup.

I bought my tickets for Homestead and you should too!

It's going to be a show worth watching if you are a Hendrick fan.

His fourteenth place finish was a disappointment after running all day in the top ten. His team did some things, like the last yellow tire call, which didn't bode well for a run to the Cup.

I am afraid after seeing the 88 team's effort I am leaning towards Tony Stewart's opinion about his own team. Stewart said in a post race interview that his team would just be taking the place of a team who could win if they get in the Chase. Junior's might be in the same boat.

There is three races to go. Bristol, Atlanta and Richmond. I think Dale Jr is firmly in the Chase. I also think he needs to show a lot of improvement in those three races for anyone to consider him a Cup contender instead of a Championship pretender.

I have complete faith that he will make the improvement needed but I am afraid today he didn't show it.

Let's hope Thunder Valley is where the 88 team shows what they are made of and gets that much needed momentum towards a championship.

I can't wait for the green flag to drop and the racing to begin. First, of course, we will have to sit through three hours of mind numbing blathering by the NASCAR media and their favorite boy, Carl Edwards. Is anyone else tired of the driver of the 99 being on ESPN and Speed more than the dozen drivers more popular? Does Carl have a better publicist or is ESPN and Speed that short of things to say that they put NASCAR's version of Eddie Haskel on camera every chance they get to fill time? What ever the reason Carl Edwards has made me a fan of any show on any channel besides the one he is on.
I have been proposing Dale Jr just needed to do well the last couple of races - that is over. I do firmly believe Junior will make the Chase and only needs decent finishes to accomplish that feat but it's now about winning a Cup.

There is absolutely no reason, beyond pleasing NASCAR's largest fan base, for Junior to make the Chase and not be competitive. The hunt for his first championship starts Sunday. Junior must and will, have a great race to start to build momentum for the Chase. He and the 88 can not limp in to the Chase with top twenties and expect to compete with the other Chasers.

Junior's last win came at Michigan with fuel mileage strategy but this time it will be with a fast car and a great driver. Michigan is the style track, intermediate, which is critical to winning. It is the type Jimmie Johnson has dominated to win his five titles. If Junior can show power this weekend it will place him smack in the middle of Cup contention.

If he doesn't? It will be mean there is a lot of work to do and a short time to do it before Chicagoland and the start of the Chase. It will also mean, Atlanta on September fourth is critical, the last of the intermediates on the regular season schedule.

All that being said, the 88 is poised for a good finish Sunday and I believe when they look back at this season people will say, "Junior made a statement in Michigan that lead to his Cup."

My prediction; A new chassis, good communication between LeTarte and Junior equals a win for the 88. Remember you heard it here first!
