Online physical education course offerings to increase at RHS

As early as their sophomore year, students at Ripon High School will be allowed to take online physical education courses.
This change in curriculum was approved Monday by the Ripon School Board.
An online physical education course would still involve students being active, but it would be in a more personal way, as students would work towards goals and fitness assessments at their own pace.
Three options were laid out for the board, all of which varied from the current curriculum, but at different degrees.
Ultimately, the board approved an option that would require students to complete the grade nine Personal Fitness/Healthy Lifestyle course in a face-to-face format, meaning it would be run like a typical phy-ed class with the instructor present at all times. But, following the completion of that course and beginning with their sophomore year, an online course option would be available to students.

When Lindsey Lecus heads to the library for her literature studies class at Fritsche Middle School, she checks the assignments posted by her teacher in Maine and may enter a discussion forum with a classmate in Switzerland.

It's the second online English class Lecus has taken thanks to Fritsche's partnership with an international provider of online courses, and the seventh-grader said she likes the fact that she can work ahead of the traditional curriculum and earn credits toward high school.

In Milwaukee and elsewhere, more middle and high schools are starting to offer online classes to students during the day in place of one or more face-to-face classes.

Inessa Volkonidina had taken precalculus once and dropped it. She needed to take it again, and quickly, to fulfill a graduation requirement at Long Island University. She went online and found a company with an odd name, StraighterLine, that offered the course on even odder terms: $99 a month.

She thought it might be a scam. But StraighterLine, based in Alexandria, is a serious education company and a force that could disrupt half a millennium of higher-education tradition. The site offers students as many general-education courses as they care to take for a flat monthly fee, plus $39 per course. As college tuitions go, it is more on the scale of a cable bill.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has launched an online nuclear medicine and PET accreditation application program to potentially reduce the time for facilities to become accredited.

The nuclear medicine and PET accreditation programs allows providers to apply online via the new “ACRedit” system, said the ACR. In addition, ACR said its new program does not require a fee to access the application or an annual fee.

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, all providers who bill for PET, MRI, CT and nuclear medicine under part B of the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule must be accredited to receive technical component reimbursement from Medicare, according to the college.

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- QuinStreet Inc. cut the price of its initial public offering by as much as 21 percent in a deal that marked Frank Quattrone’s return to the IPO market.

The Internet advertiser advised by Quattrone sold 10 million shares, or 22 percent of the Foster City, California- based company, at $15 each after asking for as much as $19, a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and Bloomberg data showed. Online college education is expanding—rapidly. More than 4.6 million college students were taking at least one online course at the start of the 2008-2009 school year. That's more than 1 in 4 college students, and it's a 17 percent increase from 2007.

Turns out it's the economy, stupid.

Two major factors for the soaring numbers in the 2008-2009 school year are the sour economy and the possibility of an H1N1 flu virus outbreak, according to the seventh annual Sloan Survey of Online Learning report, titled "Learning on Demand: Online Education in the United States in 2009." But, the survey's authors say, there is a lot more work to be done, and there's huge potential for online education to expand, especially at larger schools.
