Your eyes are two palm tree forests in early light,

Or two balconies from which the moonlight recedes

When they smile, your eyes, the vines put forth their leaves,

And lights dance . . . like moons in a river

Rippled by the blade of an oar at break of day;

As if stars were throbbing in the depths of them . . .

And they drown in a mist of sorrow translucent

Like the sea stroked by the hand of nightfall;

The warmth of winter is in it, the shudder of autumn,

And death and birth, darkness and light;

A sobbing flares up to tremble in my soul

And a savage elation embracing the sky,

Frenzy of a child frightened by the moon.

It is as if archways of mist drank the clouds

And drop by drop dissolved in the rain . . .

As if children snickered in the vineyard bowers,

The song of the rain

Rippled the silence of birds in the trees . . .

Drop, drop, the rain

Drop the rain

Evening yawned, from low clouds

Heavy tears are streaming still.

It is as if a child before sleep were rambling on

About his mother (a year ago he went to wake her, did not find her,

Lightning's from across the Gulf sweep the shores of Iraq

With stars and shells,

As if a dawn were about to break from them, But night pulls over them a

coverlet of blood. I cry out to the Gulf: "O Gulf,

Giver of pearls, shells and death!"

And the echo replies,

As if lamenting:

"O Gulf,

Giver of shells and death .

I can almost hear Iraq husbanding the thunder,

Storing lightning in the mountains and plains,

So that if the seal were broken by men

The winds would leave in the valley not a trace of Thamud.

I can almost hear the palm trees drinking the rain,

Hear the villages moaning and emigrants

With oar and sail fighting the Gulf

Winds of storm and thunder, singing

"Rain . . . rain . . .

Drip, drop, the rain . . .

And there is hunger in Iraq,

The harvest time scatters the grain in-it,

That crows and locusts may gobble their fill,

Granaries and stones grind on and on,

Mills turn in the fields, with them men turning . . .

Drip, drop, the rain . . .

When came the night for leaving, how many tears we shed,

We made the rain a pretext, not wishing to be blamed

Drip, drop, the rain

Since we had been children, the sky

Would be clouded in wintertime,

And down would pour the rain,

And every year when earth turned green the hunger struck us.

Not a year has passed without hunger in Iraq.

Rain . . .

Drip, drop, the rain . . .

Drip, drop . . .

In every drop of rain

A red or yellow color buds from the seeds of flowers.

Every tear wept by the hungry and naked people

And every spilt drop of slaves' blood

Is a smile aimed at a new dawn,

A nipple turning rosy in an infant's lips

In the young world of tomorrow, bringer of life.

Iraq will blossom one day '

I cry out to the Gulf: "O Gulf,

How To Lose Your Self Respect in 4 Easy Steps

Sometimes we all cut some corners to get what we want or need. Want to stay home on a beautiful day after a long winter? Call in sick. Don’t want to cook dinner? Act like you don’t know how. It’d be easier if someone else were helping you with a project? Exaggerate the difficulty.

In DBT, Linehan outlines 4 primary factors associated with loss of self-respect.

Lie—Tell lies, exaggerate, act helpless when you’re not and over time your self-respect will slowly erode. Sure a few little white lies or a slight exaggeration here and there aren’t going to significantly impact how you feel about yourself, but a pattern of bending the truth will whittle away at your self-esteem.
Compromise your values—If you want to lower your opinion of yourself, sell out your values, especially for reasons that aren’t important. Often people find themselves compromising on values in an effort to keep the peace. It’s hard to rock the boat and sticking up for yourself can sometimes feel like you’re risking a relationship. But failing to stick to what is important to you can alter your connection to your own sense of self. Over time, you may feel that you don’t really know yourself anymore.
Apologize Over and Over—We all make mistakes and apologizing is an important part of maintaining relationships. However, over apologizing—apologizing for having basic needs, for asserting yourself, for asking a question, for being in someone’s way or not anticipating their every need—is a sure way to lower your sense of your own worth.
Be Unreasonable—If you’re not fair, whether it’s towards yourself or others, you’re ultimately going to feel it in your sense of self. Do you regularly take advantage of someone’s naiveté? Do you allow others to push you around out of fear? Taking unfair advantage of someone who has less power than you or allowing others to take advantage of you will hurt your sense of self.

Often, acting in this way works to get us what we want and need. However, a pattern of interacting with others with lies, exaggerations and helplessness can leave you without much sense of personal worth. The occasional lie isn’t going to have a significant impact on your self-esteem, but lying often will.

The Meaning of Hajj

1. The Hajj is an inward journey to the Ka'bah of the heart and soul.

2. The Hajj consists of the Hajj of the Body (walking, standing, collecting and throwing), the Hajj of the Mind (performing the rites with understanding) and the Hajj of the Heart (performed in total submission to The Almighty).
3. The Ka'bah is not the destination; it is the starting point of one's commitment to cast away one's bad ways and to begin afresh a new Allah-centred life.

4. In tawaf, the pilgrim is like a drop of water that has become part of the river that is flowing to its origin, the ocean of Eternity. This life is a journey of return to The Merciful.

5. Sa'ee makes one aware that the Allah-centred life must be filled with "effort" (meaning of sa'ee). It is effort anchored in complete submission to Allah The Merciful that will bring the right results, just as it did for a mother who ran several times from one end of the valley to another in search of water in the harsh desert environment.
6. When the pilgrim leaves the Ka'bah in the direction of Arafah to begin his Hajj, he is moving away from The House to meet The Lord of The House. Arafat is outside the boundary of The Holy Land (Haram), signifying that The Lord of The House is everywhere, and is closer to man than he is to his own jugular vein. [The Holy Qur'an, 50:16]

DJ Sindh Arts College

Named after the Sindhi philanthropist Dayaram Jethmal, whose two family members contributed towards its cost, the building was constructed in the neoclassical, or ˜Italian architectural style". A considerable amount of money was spent on the interior of the college; the floors comprised mosaic tiles imported from Belgium and the eight-foot wide main staircase was fitted with ornamental cast-iron work from McFarlane & Company of Glasgow. Karachi, once the capital of Pakistan, is now the capital of Sindh province and the major port and main commercial center of the country. It was a strategically located small port at a protected natural harbor on the Arabian Sea north-west of the mouth of the Indus, and was developed and expanded by the British when they took over Sindh in the mid-19th century to serve the booming trade from the Punjab and the wheat and cotton regions of the sub-continent.

Floral Splendor in Palestine

NABLUS (WAFA) - The GPS device connected to the satellite (407 m) records mountain elevation from sea level. Here, in the north of the West Bank as in all historic Palestine, roses grow and blossom according to the climate.

The wind is blowing without any specific direction. Low morning clouds seem to be touching the mountain tops northeast of the city of Jenin. As the wind blows, the dozens of different wild flowers move in all directions.

Here, one can count the numbers of wild Middle Eastern (Mediterranean) flowers and can identify the strength of each flower by the intensity of the wind in the region that is part of a Mediterranean climate.

In Palestine, 3,000 types of wild flowers and others not yet discovered, blossom these days. It seems the mountain near the mountainous village of Rabasurrounded by carpet-like trees have at its bottom bright yellow Qandoul, which is a tree from the Old Testament period associated with the heritage of the Palestinians.

People here raise livestock and work in the fields and in other occupations. Some worship the land, but they do not care much for the flowers that have grown in most parts of the West Bank. For them it is just a flower. They do not care what the legend says about it that it grew from the blood of the brother of Al-Nu'man IbnAl-Munthir.

A recently published book by the Wildlife Society on biological diversity said that the organic and natural Palestinian plants are classified into 128 groups, including 14from the botanical family of ferns and 124 flowering plants.

Most of the plants in the Palestinian territories bloom in the spring, which began early this year. But the effect of high temperature, as said in the book prepared by the researcher in botanical diversity Imad Atrash, is evident on the time for flowering, which comes one month earlier in the Jordan Valley.

But there is a time where natural flowers blossom throughout the year. According to the book, 9% of the flowers bloom in January and 21% in February.

Mountains of the northern West Bank appear as natural farms for those flowers. No one can claim ownership of this farm. So it is possible to see many of these families that benefit from the warmth of the winter and the calm of the wilderness wherever it wants without having to look into the origin of the family of these flowers.

But what about the most beautiful and controversial flowers in historical Palestine?

Some of them are associated with names of countries such as dates of the Egyptian desert (Zaqqum), and Egyptian haloloo, which is a flower next to the Alhamham that attracts insects producing sweet nectar honey taste.

These flowers used to attract children in the past who would drink their juice. Among the thousands of these kinds, there is the Halouk, which does not follow the photosynthesis process. It is a leafless flower that comes out of the ground and includes five million seeds that remain in the soil for 20 years, according to al-Atrash.

In the mountains and plains of the northern West Bank, it was not possible to see this flower in such an early time of the year.

However, it is possible to see a plant that came from Argentina some 3,000 years ago, as some accounts say. It is Alkhatmieh (cow eye), which could rise up to three meters and is characterized by its variety of colors.

In almost every mountain site, the Aftreet (devil) flower grew, which is from the family of tulips.

In the plains of Raba, there is al-Majn apple, which is a plant that goes back to the old historical periods and is linked to the religious history of the region. But it blooms only in the month of March.

In contrast to old beliefs held by some about it that it brings madness to those who eat its fruit, leaves of this plant look green, delicate and pretty.

On the eastern slopes of the northern West Bank, a large number of flowers that blossomed appear, and some of them have leaves due to early growth and mildtemperatures

The new book mentions many examples about flowers of Palestine, but it does not talk about their link to the prevailing culture.

But one of the most famous plants closely remembered by Palestinians is the Apple of the Dead Sea, which is a shrub growing in the wild land of Jerusalem and has a characteristic of being toxic and can cause blindness.

The Dead Sea Apple rises about two meters above the ground.

In the West Bank, when the green starts to fade gradually as the earth drops in height from the ground level and the transition of the climate from one to another, the flowers appear more solid and stronger than other mountain flowers.

In the colorful mountains of Raba, it was possible to see some flowers that have lost their leaves leaving visible round heads covered with delicate plant layer. But near Jericho, it is possible to see tough bulbs with light colors.

The flowers in Palestine are dazzling. But they are not far from politics at all, likemost of the components of life. Al-Atrash says that the Israelis have repeatedly tried to register some of the Palestinian flowers with Israeli names, as they did with the Anemone flower.

A trip in the Palestinian territories with its small geographical area in the first three months of the year reveals the nature of the botanical diversity in it, which is more distinctive than many of the world's continents.

Manoj Samarawickrama: Sri Lanka is a country in south Asia, which boasts of a rich cultural heritage spanning over 2500 years. This had been enriched by much other culture, especially from India. Many a kingdom that was established in ancient Sri Lanka, along with various cultural influxes from India has influenced in shaping the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
Inarguably the factor, which has played the lead part in contributing to the culture along with everything traditional, is the presence of Buddhism. Ancient rulers of Sri Lanka built monuments established institutions to honor the philosophy of Buddhism. In turn this led to lesser folks following the principles advocated by Buddhism en masse. This could be described as a way of life, a pattern of thinking, which led to a self-sufficient society that engaged in agriculture as the means of living.
To support agriculture an advanced irrigation system was constructed. These people pursued matters aesthetic such as dancing, music, painting, sculpting and literature in spare time. This led to the development of quaint traditional customs that are so peculiar to Sri Lanka. The concept of "Wewai Dagobai" (Wewai = Reservoir, Dagobai = A Buddhist shrine) arose from the above, establishing the links between Buddhism, culture and irrigation.
