UK Students Looking Abroad For University Degree

Around three-quarters of students would consider leaving the UK for a university abroad despite not knowing enough about the option of gaining a degree overseas, according to a major survey.

Research by leading student website, The Student Room, has revealed that 72 per cent of university applicants in the UK would contemplate studying abroad and yet 86 per cent feel ill-informed about the alternative route.

The survey also found that 56 per cent of students do not know how to apply to a university abroad.

A quarter said they would reconsider whether to study at a UK university as a result of tuition fees being almost tripled to up to £9,000 a year.

And a third will look to study abroad if they are among the 200,000 applicants unable to secure a place at an over-subscribed UK university each year.

The survey was commissioned by organisers of The Student World Fair, the only event of its kind dedicated to showcasing international universities to under-graduates and post-graduates in the UK.

The number of Student World Fair events is being trebled this year, and also being held in Manchester for the first time as well as London, to meet the demand for information about studying overseas.

More than 1,000 students, parents and teachers attended the first Student World Fair last October.

The second event in March this year saw a 21 per cent increase in attendance, whilst the range of countries with exhibiting universities rose by 25 per cent.

The next events in Manchester and London this autumn will be the largest to date with up to 80 international universities from 22 countries on show.

Jamie O’Connell, marketing director of The Student Room, said: “This research once again demonstrates the clear demand from students for opportunities to study overseas.

“What is concerning is that traditional sources of guidance such as parents and teachers are not fully aware of the globalisation of higher education and therefore do not have enough information to give valid advice.

“It’s important young people make the right choices and are aware of all the options out there. Events like The Student World Fair and online information sources such as The Student Room are great for getting the facts into students’ hands when they need them.”

Jemma Davies, from The Student World Fair, said: “There are challenges to overcome and benefits to enjoy from studying abroad but students are being hampered from weighing up those considerations by a lack of information.

“It is difficult to make an informed decision when universities are located overseas which is why meeting their representatives under one roof is a great step towards making the right choice.”

The survey also found that the most important factors when choosing to study abroad are the academic reputation of the university and how employers would perceive the qualification.

North America topped the list of the best region abroad for a high-quality degree, for the student experience and for future employability.

The Student Room research was carried out between May and July this year and surveyed 1,141 young people, with the majority being aged 16 to 20 years.

The Student World Fair, which is free to attend by registering at www.thestudentworld.com, will be held at The Point, Lancashire Cricket Ground, on Saturday, September 29, and at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, October 6.

Hamburg, 9. August 2012 – Jedes Auge weist einzigartige, unverwechselbare Charakteristika auf, ähnlich eines Fingerabdrucks. Deshalb müssen bei einer Augenlaserkorrektur – zum Beispiel bei einer LASIK – im Vorfeld verschiedene Messungen am Auge durchgeführt werden. Zur Voruntersuchung des Auges wenden die EuroEyes-Augenlaserzentren jetzt als erster Anbieter deutschlandweit eine innovative Weiterentwicklung der Wellenfront-Technologie an: das iDesign WaveScan-System. Mit dieser innovativen LASIK-Methode können Fehlsichtigkeiten wie Weit- und Kurzsichtigkeit und Hornhautverkrümmung behoben werden. Dieses neue System kommt im Rahmen der iLASIK-Behandlung zum Einsatz – dem derzeit modernsten LASIK-Verfahren überhaupt.

Fünf Messungen in einem Schritt

Die Untersuchung im Vorfeld der LASIK-OP dauert nur drei Sekunden und bietet dennoch umfangreiche Ergebnisse. In dieser kurzen Zeit werden fünf unterschiedliche Messungen vorgenommen, unter anderem Pupillendezentrierung und Augenbewegung. Dr. Jørgensen, der als einer der Vorreiter auf dem Gebiet der LASIK-Behandlungen gilt, erläutert: „Die mit dem neuen iDesign WaveScan-System erzielten Ergebnisse sind 5 Mal genauer als Standardmessungen für Brillen oder Kontaktlinsen beim Optiker“.

Maßgeschneiderte Vermessung der Augen

Anders als bei vorherigen Systemen wird die Brechkraft des Auges mit dem neuen Aberrometer nicht mehr nur an 250, sondern an insgesamt 1.250 unterschiedlichen Punkten am Auge erfasst. Auf diese Weise entsteht eine Art Landkarte, auf der die Brechungsfehler des untersuchten Auges abgebildet sind. Das neue Gerät registriert Aberrationen – Abbildungsfehler des menschlichen Auges – also noch einmal exakter.

„Der iDesign WaveScan liefert noch genauere personalisierte Messergebnisse“, erklärt der Gründer und ärztliche Leiter der EuroEyes-Augenlaserzentren, Dr. Jørn Slot Jørgensen. So können während der LASIK-Operation nicht nur Fehlsichtigkeiten korrigiert, sondern auch die Sehqualität verbessert werden. A leading online bathroom specialist is hoping to make a splash in this year’s prestigious awards celebrating the best in ecommerce in the UK.

Luxury for Less, based in Coventry, has been named as a finalist for Small e-Retailer of the Year at the eCommerce Awards for Excellence 2012.

The awards recognise companies driving the ecommerce industry in the UK and celebrate the nation’s leading presence in ecommerce innovation.

Luxury for Less was launched in 2006 and specialises in bathroom equipment, furniture and accessories.

After its first year of trading on eBay, the company had achieved nearly £1 million of sales and has since expanded into a successful online multi-channel retailer consistently doubling turnover year-on-year.

Luxury for Less relocated to Coventry in 2008 in a strategic move to take advantage of the area’s superior transport links and access to good commercial space.

Hy-Ten Celebrates Nuclear Approvals for Friction Welded Couplers in Concrete Construction

Friction welded couplers from, Hy-Ten, the independent re-bar and accessory supplier, have gained nuclear approval. CARES, the reinforcement steel certification authority has tested the couplers under TA1-C type A standard for use in nuclear facilities. The product is now fully certified to comply with the standards of BNFL and to meet the requirements of Sellafield Ltd. The approved products, standard couplers type HT(S) and positional couplers, types HT(P) and (EP), are manufactured at Hy-Ten’s Liverpool factory under a stringent ISO9000 quality assurance system. The factory also complies with ISO14000 environmental standards.

The nuclear industry approvals are for re-bars in the 16mm to 40mm diameter range. In addition to their great strength, contractors have noted how the Hy-Ten product produced higher productivity and quality in the completed construction. In non-nuclear installations, where jointed coupling of vertical re-bars is not mandatory, Hy-Ten’s friction welded couplers permit significant steel savings by eliminating overlaps.

Grant Dean, HT products divisional manager, commented, “HT friction welded couplers have been enthusiastically adopted by the civil engineers and frame contractors. Nuclear approval allows us to offer the product to construction companies operating in this sector and is further verification of the quality of the product and the consistency of our manufacturing systems.”

The HT range of couplers is manufactured on CNC high speed friction welding machines. This technique, widely used in automotive and aerospace industries, produces a joint of great strength – achieving 100 per cent bar-break in tests. In comparison to conventional multi-part threaded couplers, Hy-Ten’s friction welded couplers are also competitive.

Hy-Ten has other innovative products that promote site quality and productivity while achieving significant savings in material, time and embedded energy. Rotterdam, 8 August 2012 - AND International Publishers NV has realized a sharp increase in revenue for the first half of 2012. Thanks to the increase in revenue and the implemented cost savings the loss suffered in 2011 turned into a profit of € 1.9 million in the first half of 2012. Earnings per share amounted to € 0.51. Based on the results for the first half of 2012 AND expects revenue throughout 2012 will increase to at least € 4.4 million. AND expects the full year 2012 to be profitable.

Oil and Lubricants Company Rescued from the Administrator by Crown Oil

National fuel and lubricants distributor Crown Oil has acquired the key assets of Samuel Cooke a leading North West fuel supplier. Crown Group managing director Matt Greensmith explained, “The Samuel Cooke name dates from 1845 and is associated with good service so we will continue to trade on this while assuring all existing customers close attention and service. Crown and Cooke are both long established family-owned businesses that have built sound reputations that are so often the hallmark of independent companies.”

Following the merger into Crown Oil, Samuel Cooke customers will have access to a wider range of advanced low carbon fuels and speciality lubricants. In line with Crown Oil’s environmental commitment all Sam Cooke’s delivery mileage by road tankers will now be fully carbon offset.

August 6, 2012, Washington, DC - Development officers at institutions of higher learning must understand their target audience’s needs if they are to be successful at energizing alumni and raising funds from potential donors.

That was one of the Persuasive Communications lessons from CommCore Consulting Group CEO Andrew Gilman during a seminar for Fordham Law School Development officers.

“The most important thing a development officer can remember when meeting with an alum or a potential donor is the great acronym WIIFM,” said Gilman, himself a Fordham Law graduate. “If you can tap into ‘What’s In It For Me?’ you will have a better chance for success.”

Gilman delivered his remarks during Fordham Law’s annual summer development retreat in New York City in July.
