WHAT ARE THE FIVE ELEMENTS ?

The Five Elements philosophy is in many religion and in many traditions. The basic philosophy is that the five elements had created the universe and in turn created us and everything around us. In different philosophy The five elements named differently. As per Hindu philosophy Pancha Mahabhuta are the five elements.

What are these elements ?

– Akasha or Ether or sky
– Bhumi or Earth
– Jal or Water
– Aagni or Fire
– Vayu or Air

In simple words …

The earth has been made and the Eco system on the earth has been run from these basic elements. The human body has also been made and survive from these five elements. So, everything around us and everything within us contains these five elements in different proportions.

Let us see a quote in one of the ancient books of hindu philosophy…

” When earth, water fire, air and akasa arise, when the five attributes of the elements become manifest then the yogi’s body becomes purified and he is free from illness, old age and death. “

What we understand that we should be connected to the five elements. We should also maintain the balance of these elements into our body.

How to connect ourselves with Five Elements ?

If we really want to connect with the five elements, then we have to start living within and surround by the five elements. The best way to do that is to involve five elements into our house or any living space around us.

We live in our house and spend most of our time within the house. Thus in order for us to be connected to the five elements the house has to be connected to them.and to do so, we can involve these element into our house in different ways.

Earth : Making the structure it self from the earth and try to retain it as naturally as the it allows.

Water : Water is involved with the structure in various ways. It is either flowing or creating just an ambience or affecting the microclimate..but it is always there.

Air : The air flows through our structures as naturally as it would outside because of basic climatic considerations, cross ventilation and open planning.

Fire : Fire is represented by the sun light, which allows the structure to be best lit at all times. Allow the structure to be oriented such that it has the required exposure to sun.

Sky : Sky is an element which can be seen and felt from various courtyards and open terraces within the designs.

Now, There are different architectural designs or elements which we can use in our house or any living space that incorporate these five elements.

So here we are explaining and detailing the different ways of involving ‘ Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhuta) * ‘ in our house. And you know what, by following this you can also make your house a sustainable or a green house.

Start Exploring Pancha Mahabhuta to make your house and so you healthy.

Basically there are three types of color can be used in any room.

1. Primary Color – A primary color should be used on most of the surface. It should be light in color shade.

2. Secondary Color – It should be used on very less area,It should be in contrast with primary color. It can also be used just to highlight the wall or the accessories. It can be used to highlight the things or accessories if the Highlight Color is absence.

3. Highlight Color – The highlight color should be used only when the primary color of the room is white color or any light color in shade. It can be used on a patch of wall or in form of colored stencils on wall or in accessories like cushions, pillows, bed sheets, clock, photo frames, lighting accessories or any thing but in very less area.

Here are the list of the color combinations and color schemes with blue color. Blue only looks good when we pick a darker shade. So we are taking Monaco Blue shade. The light and bright color will set in contrast with Dark Blue in primary color and in highlight color.

What are the directions?

Which are the eight directions described in Vastu shastra?

And how are they linked with our house…

The directions…or the cardinal points are the directions of North, South, East and West. These form the four points of the compass. There are another four intermediate or sub directions located at the center of two main directions. North-East, South-East, North-West and South-West.

Direction can be determined by the compass or from the position of the sun and the shadows. Sun rises roughly in the East and sets roughly in the West. During its course of travel from East to West, sun leaves an imprint on the house and thus on us. In the feng-sui it is known as the chi imprints ..and the Hindu Philosophy of Vastu shashtra uses the imprints of sun in relation with the five elements to create a building or a house in tune with nature.

Below we are listing down the potential qualities of each direction. The qualities are based on the actual climate, the seasons, the vastu shashtra beliefs and some feng-sui chi imprints.

It will give you a specific idea as how to go about planning your house and what to expect from each direction.

North ( Uttar ) – Water, wealth, open, lighter, more openings .

You should place your living room which is more open and lighter in this direction.

South ( Dakshin) – Mountain, earth, Store for the energy in the house, less open, highest point in house.

You should place staircase or store in this direction.

East ( Purva) – thunder, Wood, Sunrise, Growth, Open , Lighter and clean.

You should place your study, office, drawing room or guest room in this direction.

West ( Pashim ) – Metal, sunset, reflective, satisfied, enclosed

You should place bedroom for children, toilet or septic tank in this direction

North-East ( Ishan ) – Earth, Motivated, clear minded, knowledge, spiritual growth, water

You should place temple, entrance and underground water tank in this direction

North – West ( Vayavya ) – Heaven, Wind, moon

You should place bedroom for teens , toilet, parking or wash yard in this direction.

South-East ( Agani ) – Wood, Active, Creative, imaginative, Sun and Fire

You should place Kitchen in this direction.

South-West ( nairutya ) – Down to Earth, Practical, highest point in the house, Confidence

You should place master bedroom, dressing room and staircase in this direction

So now you must have a feel of all the directions. In other articles we will go in the placement of rooms in more detail. Though there is one more thing that should be kept in mind when we are looking at direction….

There are two more directions as per Vastu shashtra principles – Aakash ( Sky ) and Patal ( towards the center of the earth ). These also have to be incorporated in the house in form of an open courtyard. We will go in detail in the article of ‘Central Courtyard’

Also all the directions and the Meanings for the same are for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. They will change if you live in the Southern Hemisphere.

We hope that this article will help you relate to the direction more..more in the next article.

You must be wondering why is this related to architecture ? and how to my house ?

Amdavad formerly Ahmedabad is the largest city and former capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. With a population of more than 5.8 million and an extended population of 6.3 million, it is the fifth largest city and seventh largest metropolitan area of India.

Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 32 km (20 mi) from the state capital Gandhinagar.

The city has large populations of Hindus, Muslims and Jains, and these cultures are preeminent in the city and it reflect in the architecture of the city also.

The architecture of Ahmedabad ranges from the ancient to the very modern. Early in the city’s history, under Ahmed Shah, builders fused Hindu craftsmanship with Persian architecture, giving rise to the Indo-Saracenic style.

Many mosques in the city were built in this fashion. Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is one of the most famous mosques in Gujarat. The mosque was built in the last year of the Sultanate of Gujarat. It is entirely arcuated and it has ten stone latticework windows (jalis) on the side and rear arches.

Moghal architecture style can also be seen in Jama Masjid, Julta Minara(Sidi Bashir Mosque), Sarkhej Roza mosque etc..

Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad

Julta Minara (Shaking Minarets)

Adalaj Stepwell is a unique Hindu ‘water building’ in the village of Adalaj, close to Ahmedabad. The stepwell was built in 1499 by Muslim king Mohammed Begda for Queen Rani Roopba, wife of Veer Singh, the Vaghela chieftain. The step well or ‘Vav’, as it is called in Gujarati, is intricately carved and is five stories in depth. Such step wells were once integral to the semi arid regions of Gujarat as they provided basic water needs for drinking, washing and bathing. These wells were also venues for colorful festivals and sacred rituals.
