This biodegradable urn transforms into a living memorial, providing a literal representation of life after death.

It seems that every thing we do on this planet creates a mess. Even dying. After passing away, tradition demands that we be pumped full of chemicals and ensconced in a massive box made of highly decorated wood and metal. After a few hours in our overgrown jewelry box, we’re buried in the ground where the chemicals will slowly leach into the soil as the box breaks down around us.

For all the pomp and circumstance, there’s nothing natural about the way we deliver empty bodies to the great beyond, but that may be changing. Spiritree is the latest offering in greener burial technology. It is a biodegradable cinerary urn that transforms into a living memorial in the form of a tree, providing a literal representation of life after death.

image via Spiritree

While there are other biodegradable cinerary urns on the market, none can claim to be carbon-negative like Spiritree. Not only does the unique urn return a loved one or pet’s ashes to the dust from whence they came, it also uses the nutrients left behind to grow a tree–which will spend its own life scrubbing carbon out of the atmosphere.

The two-piece container is composed of an organic bottom shell and a chemically inert, weathering ceramic cover. The bottom piece holds the cremated remains within its internal concavity, while the top part protects them from dispersion.

Image via Spiritree

“When planted along with The Spiritree, the growing plant gradually feeds itself from the biodegradable bottom shell, and the calcium-rich cremated remains. In due time, the protective ceramic cover is broken by the growing tree, which becomes the actual living monument to the loved one’s remembrance,” explains the product’s website.

Spiritree received the 2010 reddot design award. Available for $225.

A big wave power park gains full licensing, and the Scottish government enlists Carbon Trust to help commercialize the sector.

The Scottish government, pushing again to maintain Scotland‘s leadership in wave power, has approved the building of what could well become the world’s first significant array and announced that the Carbon Trust will head up a program to speed commercialization for the sector as a whole.

The wave park that gained full permitting is planned for the Atlantic coast off the Isle of Lewis, at the northern end of Scotland’s Western Isles chain (aka, the Outer Hebrides). It would produce 40 megawatts using Aquamarine Power’s “Oyster” wave energy converters, the latest iteration of which – the Oyster 800 – is presently sending power onto the grid at the European Marine Energy Centre. That’s it directly below.

Aquamarine Power’s Oyster 800 wave energy machine in operation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, Scotland. (image via Aquamarine Power)

Here’s how Aquamarine Power sees things unfolding:

The green light from the government and its regulator Marine Scotland, along with onshore planning which was approved last September, means the Edinburgh firm, through its wholly owned subsidiary Lewis Wave Power Limited, will be able to begin installing their near-shore Oyster wave energy machines at the site in the next few years – once the necessary grid infrastructure has been put in place.

The Oyster is what’s known in the trade as an oscillating wave surge converter. It’s attached to the seabed at depths of between about 30 and 50 feet about a quarter-mile offshore. Its hinged flap, which is almost entirely underwater, pitches back and forth in the waves, driving hydraulic pistons that push high-pressure water onshore via a subsea pipeline to drive a conventional hydro-electric turbine.

The device operates near-shore. (image via Aquamarine Power)

The Oyster is one of many types of wave energy converters in development, but with a second version of its device working at the EMEC it can be counted as further ahead than most. But help might be on the way for the whole sector.

On the same day he announced the full licensing of the Lewis wave park, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Fergus Ewing said that Carbon Trust – a “not-for-dividend” company that researches, analyzes, strategizes and invests in carbon-reducing technologies – would undertake a program to push concepts, demos and pilots toward commercialization.

According to Stephen Wyatt, director of innovation at the Carbon Trust, the key point here is that Scotland is recognizing that wave power needs its own focused attention, apart from tidal power development,

The Carbon Trust are delighted to be working with the Scottish Government to deliver this dedicated support mechanism of financial and technical support for the wave sector to enable wave projects to get to the first array stage,” Wyatt said in a statement. ”This tailored approach for wave energy, complemented by a Marine Energy Accelerator for enabling technologies, will help keep Scotland, and the rest of the UK, in pole position to capitalise on the tremendous opportunity we have in marine energy.”

A Dutch university town has set up a prefab home supermarket for first-time home buyers, with diverse designs from 20 different architecture firms.

Sophisticated prefab homes have thrived in Europe over recent decades, more than in the U.S. In one strikingly expansive example, a Dutch university town has set up a kit-home supermarket for first-time home buyers, who get to choose among diverse designs from twenty different architecture firms.

Each is shipped as a “flat pack” rather than in truck-width modules, and can be assembled in four to six weeks. Most prices are between $150,000 and $175,000. Government loans are available to pay them, and the town also owns plots for sale to build on. Cutting out the developer as a middleman yields substantial savings. Some buyers may be able to assemble the houses themselves.

8A’s house in its darkest finish. Via 8A Architecten.

The firm 8A Architecten drew up a single steep gable and four dormers; it’s a bit obvious, at first glance, but offers a veritable supermarket aisle all on its own. You can look through its wide array of colors, sizes, and floor plans on the program’s website, which is not available in English but almost looks like it is, with headings “contact,” “nieuws,” “specificaties,” and “wat is ibb8A?”

Hayhouse. Via LRVH Architecten.

Then there’s Hayhouse, a straw bale house from Lilith Ronner van Hooijdonk. And there’s Deckhouse, cube-shaped but darkly timbered for a Nordic rustic look. Surprisingly, Deckhouse comes from a firm of Greek women with offices in Belgium, Netherlands, and Crete under the name EX.s Architecture. I’d say they tend to avoid excess, actually:

Main interests and activities include Urban Agriculture, Cladding and articulated systems with Eco-materials and recycling materials, various forms of community and collective housing and participatory design… We have been exploring the potentials of the fabrication laboratory combined with crafting, especially in the cases of multiple prototyping for layered molds of the eco-stones Wallpot and Trico.

From that, I’m guessing the dark “timbers” cladding the Deckhouse may be engineered wood or not wood at all, but there is no text explaining Deckhouse in particular. Perhaps Ms. Karanastasi will see this post and hire me to edit her website into native-speaker English.

Deckhouse. Via EX.s Architecture.

That’s just three of the 20 styles on offer. Even if all the new houses are in one subdivision, there’s little danger of it looking too uniform. The program’s name, IbbN, stands for “I build affordable in Nijmegen.” A similar recent program offers flat-pack prefab row houses rather than free-standing ones in the town of Almere. Nijmengen is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, and Almere one of the newest.

I haven’t seen any remarkable energy-efficiency claims for these designs, but building codes in northern Europe require reasonably high standards, and the Netherlands’ numbers for energy use per household are among the best in the region.

There are plenty of options for grilling green, from cleaner fuels to high tech grills that use renewable energy.

Memorial Day marks the official beginning of the summer grilling season, and around the country, we’ll be abandoning our hot kitchens for the sizzle and pop of outdoor cooking. If you’re the grill master in your family, you already know the secret to getting a wonderful smoky char without burning away the flavor. But did you know that the very act of grilling with charcoal contributes to toxic air pollution that makes people and planet sick?

Don’t worry. There are plenty of options for grilling green, from cleaner fuels to high tech grills that use renewable energy. Browse through the options below, and let us know which one makes your mouth water!

Cookup 200 Solar Barbecue

Image via ID COOK

Most portable grills require charcoal or gas, and deliver lackluster performance compared to a home grill. Not so with the Cookup 200. With its parabolic shape, this solar grill focuses all of the sun’s energy on to the food being cooked. Food cooks quickly, with no smoke or CO2 emissions. Although it looks big, the entire grill can be assembled in minutes and fits neatly into a convenient carry bag.

Grill Dome

Image via Grill Dome

While we may never settle the debate over whether charcoal or propane is worst for the planet, one thing is for sure: ceramic grills are much more fuel efficient than metal grills and can reduce the total carbon footprint of cooking outdoors. The Grill Dome is made from Terapex ceramics, which retain much greater levels of heat than many other ceramics. Thus, much less fuel is required, no lighter fluid is necessary, and in some cases, you can even reuse the charcoal.

The prospects for high-altitude wind get a boost as Google acquires Makani Power, a Bay Area startup that uses tethered wings to capture big breezes.

The prospects for high-altitude wind technology are looking a little more buoyant with the revelation that Makani Power has been acquired by Google[x], the semi-secret Google lab that’s dabbled in wacky stuff like driverless cars and wired eyeglasses.

Makani is the Bay Area startup, backed previously by both Google and the government through the ARPA-E program, that’s been pursuing an airborne wind turbine concept that uses a tethered airplane-like design.

image via Makani Power

Wild as the whole idea of getting wind power from 1,000 or so feet up in the air might sound, Makani isn’t the only player in the field; among others is Altaeros Energies, a company formed out of MIT that sends turbines skyward using a helium-filled, inflatable shell that looks like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade float.

On its website, Makani said the deal with Google “formalizes a long and productive relationship between our two companies, and will provide Makani with the resources to accelerate our work to make wind energy cost competitive with fossil fuels.”

The company added that “(t)he timing couldn’t be better, as we completed the first ever autonomous all-modes flight with our Wing 7 prototype last week.” And here’s video of the tethered wing in action (note that the film is a compilation of several test runs):

The lure of higher-altitude wind power is simple: stronger, more consistent winds. Plus, Makani says that complex as its system appears, “It eliminates 90 percent of the material used in conventional wind turbines, and can access winds both at higher altitudes and above deep waters offshore.”

Sounds great. Now we might see if that lovely idea can be translated into real commercial use.

Makers of two of the most popular EV charger locator apps will merge to help accelerate the plug-in revolution.

If you built it they will come. ‘It’ being an infrastructure that will support long-range travel by electric car, and ‘they’ being the people willing to give up their gas guzzlers for a pollution-free EV. A main reason adoption of plug-in cars has been so slow in the U.S. is that people are afraid of going on a road trip only to find themselves with a low battery and no charging station in sight.

Now, two companies have announced a merger that will create a massive community of plug-in drivers and illuminate the growing network of stations all over the world. Xatori, maker of the most downloaded EV app PlugShare (and GreenCharge, the EV charge monitor) has joined forces with Recargo, a software company that provides social driving tools that support the adoption and growth of plug-in mobility.

Image via PlugShare

Both Recargo and Xatori have seen tremendous growth in 2013, doubling membership across their EV charging community properties including their charging locator apps, the Recargo Station Finder, and PlugShare.

The company created by the merger will bring these apps together into a single, comprehensive directory of over 20,000 electric vehicle charging stations under the PlugShare brand, with more than 30,000 station reviews and 14,000 photos to assist in last mile navigation.

Brian Kariger will remain as CEO of the company, while Forrest North, CEO of Xatori, Inc., will become COO. All current Recargo and Xatori staff are staying on.

“This merger gives us more opportunities to work with larger companies, utilities, automakers, and fleets,” said North. “Best of all, our users will benefit from our combined talents and unified product. The strength and passion of our combined communities will really help accelerate the plug-in revolution.”

Honda announces its upcoming Acura NSX supercar will be built in a new $70 million facility at its operations center in Ohio.

Among car enthusiasts, the Acura NSX is “the bomb” (using today’s vernacular), one of a handful of retired supercars along with the Buick Grand National and Toyota Supra. Unlike the others, Honda brought back the NSX as a concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The hybrid exotic wowed both the press and audiences alike. Later that year, Honda announced that a production version would go sale sometime in 2015. A more refined version of the NSX concept was brought to the Motor City the following year.

The first generation Acura NSX was built in Japan. Honda plans to build the second gen model at its Marysville, Ohio, plant here in the good old U.S. of A. The supercar would be assembled at a new Performance Manufacturing Center located smack dab in the middle of the automaker’s current engineering, R&D and production facilities.

Image courtesy of Honda / Acura

States Hidenobu Iwata, president & CEO of Honda of America, “Thirty years ago, building cars in America was a big dream. Working together, here in Ohio and across North America we turned this dream into reality. The location of this facility is in the midst of one of the greatest collections of engineering and production talent in the world. So it makes sense that we will renew the dream and build this high-tech, supercar in Marysville, Ohio.”

Honda is assembling an all-star staff to man the $70 million, 184,000-square-foot factory. Ted Klaus, chief engineer of Honda R&D Americas, will lead the global team. Responsibility for production, though, falls on the shoulders of Clement D’Souza, associate chief engineer at Honda of America. The automaker guesstimates 100 highly skilled staff will be housed at the new location.
After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Japanese firm Shigeru Ban designed sustainable replacement housing using locally sourced labor and materials for a devastated Sri Lankan village.

Over the last 10 years, following the unimaginable destruction caused by tsunamis in 2004 and 2011, the world’s architects have focused their attention on building stronger, more sustainable housing in the areas that were wiped out by these titanic events. Perhaps none have been more active than the Japanese firm Shigeru Ban Architects, which was recently shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture that will be announced later this year.

Specifically, the project for which the firm is being lauded is a group of about 100 houses in the fishing village of Kirinda in Sri Lanka, which was leveled during the Boxing Day Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. Using local labor and sourcing materials within a few miles of the village, Shigeru Ban designed a series of simple, sturdy housing units provide much-needed low-cost shelter while also helping to the local economy.

<img class="size-full wp-image-124289" alt="Shigeru Ban's designs are made to last, using locally sourced materials. Image by Dominic Samsoni via Shigeru Ban Architects.

The prototype two-bedroom house designed by Shigeru Ban has a footprint of about 765 square feet and includes a sheltered courtyard, which is often used for meals and other family gatherings. The one-story structures use walls made of compressed earthen bricks sheathed in wood from locally harvested rubber trees. The pitched roof uses teak and coconut wood that is also sourced nearby.

<img class="size-full wp-image-124290" alt="The new housing units include open spaces for ventilation and separate the kitchen and bathroom areas from the livings spaces. Image by Dominic Samsoni via Shigeru Ban Architects.

In fitting with the Muslim strictures of the region, the house design separates the kitchen and bathroom areas and the living quarters with a covered courtyard area, where the whole family can gather. The courtyard, with its open walls, provide shade and cooling ventilation while also serving as way to divide men from women, as is the local religious and social custom. Portable wooden screens can also be used to provide greater privacy.

<img class="size-full wp-image-124291" alt="The new units are built with compressed earthen blocks and local rubber tree wood. Image by Dominic Samsoni via Shigeru Ban Architects.

The first prototype houses were designed in 2005 and completed in 2007. Local developer Phillip Bay recently told Dezeen magazine that the houses would be a template for the construction of 100 replacement homes in Kirinda. “This was not going to be a traditional disaster relief effort where we go in and make homes really fast and leave,” Bay said in the article. “I wanted to treat this like a development project.”

“This is the first time I’ve worked for the Muslim societies,” said Ban, “so before I built the houses I had a community meeting to find out what has to be carefully done depending on the generation, for example, we had to separate the man’s space and woman’s space.”

Currently, Shigeru Ban is one of 20 firms being considered for the Aga Khan prize. Later this year, five to six finalists will be chosen to compete for the $1 million grand prize.

The sun-powered Solar Impulse airplane rides downdrafts and updrafts to safely arrive in Dallas after a record-breaking 868-mile flight from Phoenix.

Solar Impulse is at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport today after the longest solar-powered flight in history, an approximately 868-mile journey from Phoenix that sounds like it was a bit of a roller-coaster ride.

Over Texas on the 18-hour, 32-minute second leg of the plane’s cross-country adventure, pilot Andre Borschberg “rode the updraft and downdraft of the mountain winds” the Solar Impulse team reported. The plane, which departed Phoenix before dawn Wednesday, landed at DFW at 1:08 a.m. CDT.

Landing at DFW early Thursday morning (image via Solar Impulse)

With a slow-moving craft (average ground speed on this leg: 52 mph) and always-busy skies, this was challenging but the experienced team seemed to take it all in stride:

The flight was a perfect training experience for both the pilot and the team in the Mission Control Center. It has reconfirmed the need to remain flexible and try to request, when possible, permission to fly at different altitudes to local Air Traffic Controllers. Having options can help avoid being stuck in a segment that’s experiencing unique winds – but it’s not always possible due to dense air traffic flying below the solar airplane.

The flight broke Solar Impulse’s own record for flight distance, set last June when Borschberg piloted the plane nearly 700 miles from Payerne, Switzerland, to Madrid.

You folks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will now have a chance to get a gander at the 3,500-pound plane with a 208-foot wingspan at open houses over the next few days. You can make reservations through Eventbrite.

After Dallas, Solar Impulse intends to head to St. Louis, then Washington, D.C., and then finishing up in New York City around the Fourth of July.

Ultimately, Borschberg and fellow pilot Betrand Piccard (he flew the first leg of this trip, and will take the next one, too) hope to circumnavigate the globe in a new Solar Impulse craft, with a bigger, more comfortable cockpit, based on the HB-SIA they are taking across North America after successful flights last year in Europe.

Here’s a video of the Phoenix-Dallas trip and, yes, a cowboy hat will appear:

By a 2-1 margin, a Massachusetts town votes against spending $14 million to remove two giant wind turbines.

Falmouth, Mass., residents got a chance this week to make their voices heard on the contentious issue of the town’s two big and allegedly noisy, headache-inducing, sleep-robbing, toothache-causing wind turbines.

They said yes to wind – rather loudly.

image via Facebook/Vote No on Question 2

Question 2 on Tuesday’s Falmouth ballot would have authorized the costly “decommissioning, dismantling and removing” of two Vestas 1.65-megawatt wind turbines at the local wastewater treatment plant. The measure failed miserably, with the nays swamping the yeas by a 2-1 margin among the 8,941 ballots cast [PDF].

As far as anyone could tell, this was the first time wind turbines had come up for a public vote like this.

It was a familiar divide: One group backing the removal said the turbines “had resulted in adverse effects on families including health, economic matters, and neighbors’ quality of life”; turbine supporters, meanwhile, said that removing the turbines, at a cost of $14 million, would be a rash reaction to a relatively small number of complaints.

A report [PDF] commissioned by Falmouth’s selectmen said that complaints began to flow “soon after Wind 1 began operations on March 23, 2010,” with neighbors citing “noise, health and safety concerns” (Wind 2 went into operation in February 2012). The report said that 32 to 41 families reported negative health effects, mostly sleep disruption. This in a town with a population of more than 31,000.

The town has attempted to appease the anti-turbine parties by curtailing operations, both during strong wind events and at night, moves critics clearly found unsatisfactory.

On its website, Windwise Massachusetts, which had campaigned against the turbines, said “(t)he lopsided vote on Question 2 in Falmouth on May 21st was sobering.”
