It was a fun party and everyone was very nice. We all had a great time.

At one point the kids were in the yard. They were playing t-ball, soccer, and climbing on the little playground they had there. The birthday boy's grandfather was by the playground letting kids know that they couldn't climb on the "roof" of the playground.

Two of the kids there totally ignored him, which really boggled my mind. How do these five year olds totally ignore the rules they're being told by an adult who, as far as they're concerned, is the owner of the house? What goes on in the homes of these kids that they think they don't have to listen?

A while later one of the kid's mom told him they had to leave...and he just ran away from her. She walked after him and kept telling him:

"Come on..."

"We have to go..."

So he climbs up on the playground roof with his friend, who's father thought it would be okay to leave his son there. Meanwhile the grandfather is telling them they can't climb on the roof and they have to come down and the mother is telling her son they have to go home. She continues to make threats and finally walks away and lets the kids continue to climb on the roof with no repercussions.<img Besides having great instructors, their approach towards martial arts is very practical without a lot of unnecessary formalities. Their pricing structure encourages you to attend as much as you can, and the costs of promotions are included, which avoids much skepticism. My favorite is their parent/child classes. This makes me the envy of many a young martial artist's daddy.

But there are two things that make me cringe every time I hear them, and they both have to do with keeping your hands up. When I was studying karate with Sensei Dave Anderson, this was always the most important thing: always keep your hands up. This probably is a big reason that it bothers me so much when they teach break-falls. for some reason the teach everyone to cross their hands over their chest. I understand that you want to avoid extending your arms early an injuring your wrists or elbows, but you can accomplish the same thing by "keeping your hands up in front of your face." The second thing that bothers me is "glue your fists to your face" in an effort to have students keep their hands high.

Both of these are bad habits that students will eventually have to unlearn, which I think should be avoided. I believe it best to teach things the right way from the beginning.

There are two other things that I wish they would change, but they are minor.

The first also has to do with keeping you hands up. They don't teach any defense from a straight punch, or at least not from the beginner levels. Therefore the "need" to keep your hands up at all times is not fortified. Since they only have to block from swinging attacks, they develop a tendency to keep their hands wide.

The last is that they teach students to place their front foot sideways before throwing a roundhouse kick. This may be a safety issue for children, but the bottom line is that you have to learn to pivot your foot while you kick. You can't expect to kick anyone if you telegraph your kick by placing your foot sideways.

cool blog! love it!

cool blog! love it!

I had a great time working with you on your Magic ...

I had a great time working with you on your Magic School Bus space project(s). Besides the mobile, here is some of the stuff we did:

Keisha’s Experiment #1:
Question:
• Why do you see stars during the day?
Results:
• Flashlight in a dark room: The flashlight lights up the room.

• Flashlight in a bright-lit room: There’s already too much light, so the flashlight does not light up the room.

Phoebe’s Experiment #1:
Question:
• How can you turn a flashlight into a night-vision flashlight?
Results:
• Wrap red cellophane around the end of the flashlight.

Ralphie’s Experiment #1:
Question:
• Why do you need to make a telescope?
Results:
• We use a telescope to make the stars look bigger. The lenses magnify what we see through the tubes.

Carlos’ Experiment:
Question:
• Do you think sunlight can make colors change?
Theory:
• The sun can turn moisture into a rainbow.

Wanda’s Experiment:
Question:
• Why is it that the moon is so bright when it does not give off its own light?
Theory:
• The moon is only reflecting the light of the sun.
Results:
• We can use a flashlight and two balls in a dark room to demonstrate how the light is reflected off the moon.

Tim’s Experiment:
Question:
• When do we see the different phases of the moon?
Results:
• We can use a flashlight and two balls in a dark room to demonstrate how the light that is reflected off the moon changes as the moon changes it’s position in relation to earth.

Arnold’s Experiment:
Question:
• How do we know when a solar eclipse occurs?
Results:
• We can use a flashlight and two balls in a dark room to demonstrate how the moon blocks most of the sun’s light from the earth.

Phoebe’s Activity:
Mnemonic (in order from the sun):
• My
• Very
• Energetic
• At first you were reluctant, but I explained that if you only practice when you go to class it will take you a long time to get better, but if you practice a little every day, you imprive quickly and be very happy about it.

You agreed to practice and since then we practice about 2-5 minutes almost every day. You're imprived quite a bit. We toke some video you can see your progression.

I'm really happy that you were able to grasp this lesson of practicing to improve.

Thanks for all the photos from Jack's party!
<b...

Thanks for all the photos from Jack's party!

Niki
