Reflecting on Math Teaching and Learning

Elizabeth Green asked “Why Do Americans Stink at Math?” in The Times Magazine this summer. She explores how new ideas about teaching math are challenging traditional ideas so “our innumeracy isn’t inevitable.”

That same month, a professor of mathematics wrote an Op-Ed entitled “Don’t Teach Math, Coach It” about using games to hook students.

We, of course, have lots of ways to teach and learn about math using any day’s New York Times, all written by our math specialist, Patrick Honner.

Celebrating Other Special Numbers

In a 2013 Science Times article, Natalie Angier considers “The Life of Pi, and Other Infinities”:

The popular notion of infinity may be of a monolithic totality, the ultimate, unbounded big tent that goes on forever and subsumes everything in its path — time, the cosmos, your complete collection of old Playbills. Yet in the ever-evolving view of scientists, philosophers and other scholars, there really is no single, implacable entity called infinity.
Instead, there are infinities, multiplicities of the limit-free that come in a vast variety of shapes, sizes, purposes and charms. Some are tailored for mathematics, some for cosmology, others for theology; some are of such recent vintage their fontanels still feel soft. There are flat infinities, hunchback infinities, bubbling infinities, hyperboloid infinities. There are infinitely large sets of one kind of number, and even bigger, infinitely large sets of another kind of number.

A less mind-bending look at special numbers is from the Weddings section, about those “digit conscious” couples who do things like propose on Pi Day and then get married on 12/13/14.
Or, you might watch a trailer for “Pi,” a film in which “a brilliant mathematician teeters on the brink of insanity as he searches for an elusive numerical code in this critically acclaimed schizophrenic thriller.”
The Science Times also has an occasional feature called “Take a Number” that explores the math behind an interesting calculation. For example:

Having Fun With the Math of Pi
Where would we be without Pi? What are some of its real-world applications? Try to answer these questions after doing some of the following exercises:
In our 2008 lesson plan Pi Anyone? we suggest three different ways of calculating and estimating pi.
The Exploratorium has a number of hands-on ideas for learning about pi, including cutting, wearing, searching, tossing and “seeing” the number.
WikiHow makes this suggestion:

Convert things into pi. This step is necessary for two reasons: first, to utterly confuse people who have no idea what you’re talking about, and second, to have fun seeing how many things can be referenced with pi. This will help you reach an even higher appreciation for the amazing number that is pi. Consider two approaches:
Use pi to tell the time. Convert naturally circular things into radians, like the hours on the clock. Instead of it being 3 o’clock, now it’s 1/2 pi o’clock. Or, instead of it being 3 o’clock, convert the inclination of the sun into radians and describe that as the time.
Simply use 3.14 as a unit of measure. Instead of being 31 years old, you are 9pi years old. With this same approach, you can find out your next pi birthday (don’t forget to celebrate it when it comes!).
