The Zika Virus and Travel - What you need to Know!

History

The Zika Virus was first discovered by Yellow Fever researchers from an infected research monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda, in the late 1940's.

In the early 1950's researchers discovered that the virus was infecting humans, and most people tested who were age 40 or older had immunity to the disease, probably from earlier infections of the Zika Virus. Those tested lived throughout Africa, Asia, and India. Researchers indicate that these populations also seem to have developed some levels of immunity, and are less affected. Some will never show symptoms of having been infected.

From its discovery, until 2007, humans tested, showed evidence of the disease, but actual confirmed cases of the Zika Virus were rare.

In 2007, islanders in Micronesia experienced the first epidemic outbreak of Zika, Since then epidemics have occurred in Polynesia, Cook Islands, Easter Island, and New Caledonia.

Despite the irresponsible rhetoric of fear mongerers, and conspiracy theorists, it is not a man-made disease intended for use by clandestine organizations bent on dominating the world.

Present

In 2015, the virus spread to Brazil, probably from foreign visitors attending the World's Cup. There, the virus quickly spread across South and Central America, Caribbean Islands, and Mexico.

It has reached pandemic levels in those regions, and will likely continue to spread due to the amount of world travelers visiting these popular destinations. People living in these regions have no history with the disease, no immunities within the population, and thus greater possibility for it to spread.

Due to risks affecting travelers, the Centers for Disease Control in the US, and its foreign counterparts, have issued travel advisories, so the public can be informed of the risks, range of possible infection, symptoms, and prevention methods.

How to Avoid the Disease

The Zika Virus is transmitted almost exclusively through the Aedes genus of mosquitoes.* Unfortunately, this type of mosquito is found around the world. If its a temperate, warm, moist, climate, its highly likely that the mosquito lives in the region. (*sexual transmission has occurred, but is extremely rare, and limited in scope and probability. Safe Sex practices, while infected, nearly completely eliminate the risk of transmission)

No vaccines currently exist. While it may take until 2018 to have them fully developed, it may be longer still, due to government hurdles, before the vaccine would become available to the public.

Expecting mothers and those planning to become pregnant are strongly advised to take every precaution against infection, as the mother can transmit the virus to the infant, causing severe birth defects, abnormal delivery, and perhaps other complications to the child, including death. In fact some Central American countries are advising women against pregnancy, until a viable vaccine is available.

To lessen the probability of acquiring the virus, the most simple option would be to limit the frequency of travel to the affected areas. This option is neither ideal for tourism or business, and frankly, not necessary.

The Best approach is to limit the risk of bites from mosquitoes, through reducing exposure, and applying repellents.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends the following:

Products with one of the following active ingredients can also help prevent mosquito bites. Higher percentages of active ingredient provide longer protection.
- DEET
- Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin. Products containing picaridin include Cutter Advanced, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus, and Autan [outside the US])
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or PMD (Products containing OLE include Repel and Off! Botanicals)
- IR3535 (Products containing IR3535 include Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition and SkinSmart)
Always follow product directions and reapply as directed.
- If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent second.
- Follow package directions when applying repellent on children . Avoid applying repellent to their hands, eyes, and mouth.
Consider using permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). You can buy pre-treated clothing and gear or treat them yourself.
- Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. See the product information to find out how long the protection will last.
- If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully.
- Do not use permethrin directly on skin.

What other steps should I take to prevent bug bites?

Prevent mosquito bites.
- Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
- Stay and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms.
- Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What if I get Sick?

First, the virus is not fatal to most people. You will feel lousy, but you are not likely to need hospitalization.

If within 2 weeks from returning abroad, you begin to feel joint, muscle, or eye pain, develop a fever or rash; you need to be seen by a doctor. Be sure to tell them that you have recently traveled. They will be better prepared to make sure you are treated properly, and recover as quickly as possible.

Why all the Fuss?

It may seem like a small matter, if the disease isn't likely to be life-threatening. You might be inclined to think that after all the precautions, if I do get sick, I'll just "suck it up" like the last bout with the flu, and then I'll be fine.

The challenge is, while you are ill, you can transmit the disease to others via mosquitoes. That mosquito can carry the disease for up to 21 days, infecting others, who then also have it transmitted to other vectors. This is exactly how a few (or one) foreign travelers caused the Zika pandemic in the Western Hemisphere.

The danger is that infants are at tremendous risk. As the disease spreads among the Western Hemisphere, newborns are increasingly born with defects tied to the Zika virus. In some affected areas, up to 1% of children are born with microencephaly; a condition of a small brain and skull that causes intellectual disabilities, development delays, and can cause death.

Certainly you would want to reduce or limit the spread of this disease, especially if you could prevent it from coming to the United States and Canada. Its not currently north of Puerto Rico and Mexico. Vigilance among the traveling public will go far in reducing or eliminating an epidemic in the US.

Travel ID Changes - What you need to know!

Are you aware that recent federal laws have changed what documents are acceptable for identification?

If you are like most travelers, probably not! Sure, you might know that a passport is now required for all international flights, and at a minimum the Enhanced Drivers License is required for Sea and Land crossings to Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean countries.

However, many of you use a drivers license as proof of your identification just about everywhere, including while traveling. Are you aware that for a number of states, your drivers license is currently not accepted as identification in many federal facilities, and in the near future WILL NOT be accepted for use in travel aboard commercial aircraft! It could also prevent one from touring the White House, a Dam, Nuclear facility, or other locations requiring ID clearance.

How did this happen?

Following the events of 9/11, the Federal Government put into place tiered identification policies, which restricted what types of identification could be used to access facilities that needed high security or if exploited, were a risk to the public. As part of that effort, the government began the process to require all states to issue driver licenses that had to meet 31 specifications for security.

Called REAL ID, these drivers licenses would be accepted by the federal government for access to facilities, and those that were not up to the Real ID standard, would be excluded in phases. In 2016, non-compliant drivers licenses will be excluded as a form of identification when boarding commercial aircraft. For some, this includes Enhanced Drivers Licenses from the affected states!

Whom does this apply?

Currently, the following states/territories DO NOT have licenses that meet the federal standard:

A study of why some states are not compliant, is largely a state's rights defense, or a privacy issue. However, until the states either work it out with the federal govt, or choose to comply, the traveler is still at the mercy of the government in terms of travel.

What Can You Do?

Until this matter gets resolved, your best option is to secure a Passport. Issued by the State Department, it will provide acceptable identification for all air travel, and will be accepted as identification at all federal facilities that allow public access. Valid for 10 years, not only will it make your domestic and international travel much simpler, but it can be used for employment as your sole ID - no longer bringing in multiple forms of ID for that new job.

144-hour Convenient Visa to Guangdong Province: Foreign nationals in Hong Kong can visit Guangdong province for a maximum of 144 hours (six days) via entry ports in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Huizhou and Shantou* using the 144-hour Convenient Visa.

Travelers who intend to stay in Hong Kong for more than a few days should pick up an Octopuscard. Bursting to Release Balloons? Some Facts.

On a recent trip, I encountered another group conducting a balloon release. It wasn't my first time observing or participating in this type of experience, and perhaps not my last.

Undoubtedly, releases continue to be popular for a number of reasons, including their ability to create a brief sentimental or emotional experience. Often, they are replicated by individuals that had a meaningful experience earlier, and wish to share the same with others. Perhaps it was at a funeral, end of camp ceremony, start of a major sporting event, or other types of activities.

For those who have engaged in a balloon release that was well facilitated, it may have had a lasting impact, and therefore its hard to argue against having balloon releases that may impact the thoughts and emotions of a participant.

As part of our tours, we ask every passenger to join us as we visit our world treasures, to pick up 10 items of trash per day, and hope they will continue to do so as they explore the world on their own. We see a lot of plastic bottles & bags. So many cigarette butts its shameful, as well as many other types of trash waste - some that isn't fit to be picked up by a tourist.

One item we encounter often are balloons. Far too many to justifiably have come from a child losing one when returning from the local restaurant, or a weekend fair. No - these are likely coming from mass balloon releases. We find them everywhere - National Parks, city streets, scenic vistas, beaches - just everywhere!

So it begs a few questions - what is the impact of balloon releases? Does the environmental impact outweigh the human gratification?

When balloon releases became a target of environmentalists, there as an effort by the balloon industry to use research to quantify how low the environmental impact of balloon releases purportedly are. This was a smart move on their part, as the scientific report did quell the outrageous accusations that was coming from the environmental groups. One problem - the research was flawed.

Largely, the report was based solely on laboratory experiments, and math calculations derived from those experiments to project an outcome. It was a good place to start, but failed to back up the research with real world field data and observation. In short, what happens in the lab, may not actually be happening in the world, and in this case, their lab observations were not reality.

1. They proposed that the vast majority of balloons released, rise to about 28,000 feet, shattering to small pieces, and then are dispersed by the wind across the earth. A photo of one that was actually captured by a GoPro camera can be found HERE.

2. They also claimed that the balloons released biodegrade as rapidly as an oak leaf, if left in the same environmental conditions as the leaf.

Herein the problem lies:

1. None of their experiments were on actual balloons that burst 28,0000 feet in the air. Even the picture of one from space linked above, didn't shatter, and become lots of little pieces, but shredded, still knotted in the end holding all the pieces together, to look like - perhaps a jellyfish. Every balloon is going to burst differently. How full it is at time of release will impact at what altitude it will burst, as will the age of the latex balloon, how long it has sat in the sun, and other important environmental factors. I suspect that far too many rupture at much lower altitudes, and create the amount of balloon litter that is found.

2. The assumption that a latex balloon biodegrades as quickly as an oak leaf, and is therefore an environmentally friendly, acceptable choice is flawed for many reasons. First, it doesn't tell the reader how long oak leaves take to biodegrade. In the conditions you might find an oak tree, in the Eastern United States, the leaves can biodegrade in two to three years. Gamble Oak, found in much drier conditions in the Western United States, can take three to five years to decompose! I find it disingenuous to make the perception that balloons are readily biodegradable , when in reality, it can take many years. This recent field study shows how long it has taken 2 balloons found at sea, to decompose in Florida.

Clearly, every balloon released, at the minimum, becomes unsightly litter somewhere on the earth, for at least TWO YEARS! (and likely much longer!) The balloon industry claims that intact balloons only litter about once every 15 square miles. That really means that EVERY RELEASE deposits a trail of balloons across the globe, at least one every 15 miles. What if people drove down the road and would throw out trash only once every 15 miles? Would that be an acceptable amount? For every balloon release in your community, would it be acceptable to tie one in your tree, on our roof, and leave it til it decomposed?

Whale Watch organizations have been conducting surveys of litter debris found in coastal waters of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Over the last 8 years, balloons make up the largest concentration of debris found in New England waters.

3. The Balloon industry claims that only one animal in the last 18 years has been documented as having died from a balloon. Perhaps they ought to stop sucking the helium, and accept that its far more prevalent.

One case resulted in litigation, from the death of a prized bull in the UK.

Too many only result in the death of wildlife. Its suspected that for every dead bird found, 100 others have died that will not be discovered (keep in mind that for every 360 pictures of dead birds due to balloons, its projected that the real death count is equal to all the birds found dead during the Exxon Valdez oil spill!)

We only post these graphic pictures to drive home the point.

For our friends in Arizona, perhaps the death of seabirds, or the litter of balloons on the beach has little impact, even though the balloons they release can end up in the ocean.

A little closer home, balloon litter is found in our forests, streams, and especially the Saguaro National Park near Tucson. A recent study found 62 balloons per square kilometer in the Rincon Mountains near Tucson! That's twice the amount of other litter such as plastic bags, and almost three times more than the amount of rattlesnakes in the same study area!

That's the unsightly balloon litter we see while on our tours! At beaches, parks, wild areas, forests, harbors, just about every place you would not want to find a balloon. Hanging in a tree, trapped in a waterway, and even killing wildlife.

While balloon releases are still lawful in Arizona, they are becoming outlawed in many jurisdictions. Not just for the environmental impact, but the impact created by power outages caused by released balloons impacting power lines and substations.

Back to the recent release pictured at the top of this post. Of all the participants whom I spent the next 2 hours, only one even talked about the release as having any impact. Why? Because it reminded her of the release she participated as a youth, where a Midwest farmer found the balloon littering his field, removed it, and found a note about where it was from, subsequently replying to the sender (this woman.) The actual release had no lasting impact on the group as far as I could tell.

But even if it does, there are much better, more lasting, ways to have the same impact, perhaps an even greater experiential experience, that could be of more value to the participant and the world.

Might I suggest:

1.Planting trees.

2. Riparian restoration.

3. Time Capsules

4. Service to the World, ie hygiene, water filtration, cooking systems.

5. Sending gratitude to others through cards or notes in the mail.

5. 10 Items of Trash a day, with a celebration at the end of the primary experience.

Lets end balloon releases. Its the responsible choice to make.

(Don't get me wrong - I'm not a tree hugging environmentalist. I see value in cutting down a tree, and also planting another. I can enjoy a campfire, but have had some majestic evenings in the wilderness, with no fire except the billions of flames burning above in milky way. I've hunted wild game, and stalked many fish, some which came to our table, but most as images for my camera. Perhaps a conservationist is the best label - if we are going to use one. Either way, I hope you will join one of our tours, as we relish in the world's beauty, and perhaps leave it better than we found it - 10 items per day)

Motorcoach Transportation and Your Safety

In recent news, the public has been exposed to horrific details of accidents involving motorcoaches, often resulting in many deaths and injuries. The most recent, occurring at the time this blog post was being written, involved a fiery crash in California. At least 10 have died, and over 34 people are being treated for diverse range of injuries.

With these types of new stories being forefront in the news, and especially on the minds of prospective travelers, the question is often asked, are motorcoaches safe? What is the safest mode of land travel?

First, one must consider that overall safety in all modes in travel have become much better. Highway travel being the most dangerous kind of travel, private vehicles traveling on highways have seen fatality rates cut in half in the last 30 years. Greatly improved roadway engineering, drastically changed vehicle designs with airbags and energy dissipation systems; and driver training programs, have all played an important role in improving safety on the highways

Still, the fatality rate of travel across all modes runs around 93 people per day! So what are the numbers?

The simple answer is YES, motorcoaches are indeed a safe mode of travel. In fact, years of data indicate it an excellent safety rating as a mode of land travel.

OK - its safe you say, but how do I know that the motorcoach I will be traveling, is safe?

First, statistically speaking, your odds of accident or injury are extremely low. So low, making it the safest form of travel on land.

Vehicles with a capacity of 10 passengers or more represented just 0.1% of the total fatalities. On average, there were approximately 40 fatalities per year, with drivers and other bus-company employees representing 25% of lives lost.
Scheduled and charter service accounted for 44% of total bus fatalities. The balance of deaths occurred with school buses (23%), urban transit (11%) and a variety of private shuttles, church buses and other services (22%).
The fatality rate per billion passenger-miles for buses is relatively low, 0.11.

In comparison, autos account for 74% of fatalities, and as you can see from the chart, in an average year, over 26,000 people will die in a car or light truck every year, while only 39 in a vehicle of 10 or more passengers (and less than half of those are in charter coaches, the majority being school and transit buses)

Second, each motorcoach company is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. the FMCSA has high standards for equipment, driver hours of operation, frequency of vehicle inspections, reporting, and more. The FMCSA, and your state often setup surprise inspection points during peak motorcoach travel seasons, and inspection is mandatory. Some municipalities also facilitate special inspection stations, as seen in this video.

Third, all interactions, especially violations are made public, via the FMCSA website. Here you can review the actual ratings for motorcoach companies, review their safety rating, and 3 year history.

If you are going to travel, or book by, a motorcoach, you can check the rating at the Company Safety Records on FMCSA, and if you are more mobile device inclined, they even have a special APP for the same purpose called SAFERBUS.

Lastly, the FMCSA will put any company out of service for violations, poorly maintained equipment, and other unacceptable safety conduct. Just in the last 12 months they have put out of service 3 inept companies in the Metro Phoenix Area. When it comes to your safety, this is to be expected, and we should be thankful that this occurs when necessary.

Are winter visitors getting ripped off?!!

Here in the metro Phoenix area, the "Valley of the Sun", literally 100's of thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage from colder regions of the U.S. & also Canada to bask in our relatively warmer climate.

Many come here to relax, and enjoy leisure activities, including traveling around the Southwest, and West Coast. In so doing, they partake of tours offered through their community, resort, or park. Sometimes they venture beyond the controlled offerings of these organizations to purchase tours directly from a tour company or travel agent.

While on its face, this appears quite innocuous; and it should be! Yet those engaged in providing tour opportunities may be ripping off the winter visitor. Here are 5 of the most common:

1. Misleading sales information.

There are tour providers in the Metro Phoenix area, that intentional or otherwise, have misleading information on the sales flyers and brochures. You purchase a tour for its destination, amenities, and value. These suppliers seem to play tricks to compel you to think you are getting something, when in fact its less than what you were led to believe.

For example. you purchase a tour and it says "4 food coupons. You think "I get 4 meals on this tour." Reality is, you may get one buffet, a free coffee and donuts (valid from 6:00am til they run out - around 7:30am) and two coupons for discounted meals.

Another example are indications that you will see "Ten National Parks" yet the truth is, you'll visit only 3, see two more out your window as you drive by, and the remainder are state park visits or drive-bys as well. There aren't even 10 national parks on the route of that trip! Oh, and its worth noting that you will do this all in 3 days. Its like a cruise company saying you will see 15 countries - but there are only 4 port stops on the cruise!

2. Cancellations

There is always the chance that a tour can get cancelled, and savvy travelers know it. Yet, a number of tour providers serving winter visitors to Phoenix, deliver a raw deal by requiring a high number of travelers for the trip to go, or its cancelled.

Most often this is 40 passengers per motorcoach. If only 30 people purchase, the tour is cancelled, and here is the real rip off - they keep the money! No refunds given, just a credit on a new tour, and you have to use it withing 12 months or you lose it!

3. Changed Itineraries

Some companies, in an effort to still send a tour they priced at 40 passengers, will send it with fewer passengers, but then intentionally drop items from the itinerary to save money.

Often this means not sending you on a motorcoach, but a two axle shuttle, or even a van. Of course, they aren't going to extend you the courtesy of letting you know about the changes. They just show up in the cheap vehicle, and then have a new itinerary (if they even bothered to send one prior.)

It also means that your hotel is not going to be the same, moving from a 3 star to a 1-2 star, and other promoted inclusives will be dropped, and the blame placed on a third party for cancelling, overbooking, closing, etc.

4. Guides & Directors

Almost always, a tour is promoted as having a tour guide, or tour director. Some companies have no real idea what it means to guide or direct a tour. You purchase a tour expecting a knowledgeable professional who can provide interpretation, and share information, and you really end up with someone who can barely act as a hostess.

Travelers have shared their horror stories of these companies and their "guides" who have pulled stunts such as not showing up for the tour, abandoning the passengers and flying home on the first day of a tour, sexually patronizing select passengers, screaming at hotel staff, and a myriad of other unprofessional activity.

Other companies claim their tours are guided, but its left to the driver to both guide and drive. While the drivers do the best job possible, its just not the same level of service that a dedicated guide would provide.

5. Handling Money

Tour companies depend on cash flow, more than other industries, often because their product is tied to long term deposits, and distant sales, and income now, means available funds to reserve cruise cabins for next year.

With the recent down-turn in the economy, cash flow for tour companies serving only winter visitors, has dried up for a better part of the year. To compensate, some companies are resorting to guerrilla tactics to keep from refunding money they have already spent.

First, they claim their accountant has to process the refunds, yet its all handled in-house. Second, they claim its in process, and may take up to 60 days - a stall tactic so they can budget the refund to be paid with new income. After the 60 days, if they don't have funds, they will claim its been lost, or a family emergency, or an employee messed it up, and she has been dismissed.

If its on a credit card, and you file a claim, they will refute it, so it goes through a 30 day cycle, then if resubmitted, they will not respond, so it takes another 30 days for your credit card company to be able to refund your money - and effectively buying them time.

Sound Familiar?

If you have done any traveling with tour companies in the Metro Phoenix area, I'm sure you have encountered a company or two, that are doing some of these items, and yes, I think you are getting ripped off!

What else can you do?

1. Pay by credit card! Your credit card company has certain protections that can assist you in these circumstances. If you are not comfortable giving your card information to a sales person in the field, or by phone; reputable companies have online payment, where you can pay through a secure server - and its safer than any transaction done in person!

2. Get Travelers Insurance. Your tour company should be able to provide you with insurance. If they cannot - look elsewhere, as any professional operation has it available. Plans can cover just one tour, or if you tour more than three trips a year, a year-round policy is probably more cost effective.

3. Ask upfront what the company will do if there are not enough passengers, and demand that you must be notified if any significant changes will occur. A reputable company will be forthright, and your request not needed, but for those that have shady operations, its added protection. If they refuse - just move on, they have told you enough about how they conduct business.

4. When their are ambiguous claims made on a flyer or brochure, ask for specifics. For example, If it says "10 national parks" ask them to list them. If they can't get back to you with them listed, move on, and perhaps consider not using that company.

5. If on tour, and significant changes have been made, document each one, and the reason if given. This will empower you later if you need to address them with the company, or take other action.

Hazards of Cruising

In light of recent cruise ship calamities, its probably forefront on the minds of many potential travelers - is cruising dangerous?

To get an answer from one who sells cruises, you would expect the answer to be - No Problem, now lets book!

There needs to be more transparency from a reputable travel agency, and East-West Global Travel will lead forward in this endeavour.

Shipbuilders today, are the finest in the world, and have an amazing capacity of maximizing displacement, load capacity, minimizing sail area and draft, and efficient design of shipboard resources.

Still, travel aboard a metal ship, in water, inherently has its hazards. The metal conducts heat, which is a problem not only during a fire emergency, but as passengers aboard the Carnival Triumph discovered, which makes tropical living conditions unbearable from the ship sitting in the sun all day with no method to mitigate that heat.

With no power, the ability of the ship to capitalize on its design, becomes useless. The ship can no longer pump water in tanks to stabilize the ship, and limit listing (tipping on its side) fight other fires, or provide power to run bow propellers and stabilizers.

Cruise ships (and most vessels) are highly dependent on electrical power, without which its difficult to maintain proper temperatures in its food service equipment, and on some ships, even cook. Without redundant power, navigation and communication systems on the bridge can quickly be unusable.

As is also evidenced in the latest event, loss of power can also cease use of plumbing, a critical function when you have 3000+ passengers on board!

Fortunately, the Carnival Triumph did not experience serious weather, another fire, or risk of capsizing, and despite some media making this to be the worst catastrophe since the Titanic, the Carnival Triumph mishap is more hype that than serious danger to the passenger.

Yet, with all the current hype, there are risks that must be considered, that often are not known the the usual traveler. A good review of the risks have been enumerated by James Walker, an expert in Maritime issues, who wrote an Op-Ed on the CNN Website, titled "What Cruise Lines don't want you to Know."

As a young man, sailing with the Merchant Marines, I took the time each evening to visit the Radio Officers room, and copy morse code transmission from the Guam Station. This communication would provide updates to ships in the area about maritime risks, and weather concerns. One item I found interesting, was that EVERY DAY, there was at least one ship in sinking distress. Its the code on the seas that other ships in relative proximity, or headed that direction along the shipping lane, provide aid. I served on my ship for 5 months, so approximately 150 ships were sinking during my tour of duty. Combine that with being aboard a Liquid Natural Gas Tanker, the regular pirate concerns while traveling the Straits of Malacca, and sailing the seas did seem to be treacherous!

Now, of the sinking vessels, not many of these ships were passenger ships, but they were all foreign flag ships. (Registered under the flag of a country other than the United States) The standards for ships sailing under a U.S. flag are very high. Other countries have limited standards, and are slow to enforce the standards they do exist. The should make passengers on Cruise Ships take notice as nearly all cruise ships in the world are flying under a foreign flag! They can effectively be sailing using sub-par standards than one would expect from a U.S. Vessel. For comparison, consider the motorcoaches in the U.S. vs what you can find in other countries: some are as good or better, but many pale in comparison. In fact, the only Deep Sea Cruise ship I know registered under the U.S. is the NCL Pride of America

As a traveler, you can ask your travel agent what flag your potential cruise is registered, and what to expect for safety on that cruise line. You can also check the U.S. Maritime Administration website for US Flagged vessels.

There are concerns about life on the sea. A disabled ship, not able to provide propulsion, or even water pressure for firefighting and plumbing is serious. Some cruise lines have built-in redundant power sources, and mobile generators; something that seems clear Carnival may be missing.

I believe more can be done. the life-rafts aboard a U.S. ship seem to have more for passenger comfort and safety than what Carnival could provide for its customers.

A ship that size should have the capacity for integrated shelters on deck. Just as valuable would be gravity fed plumbing, that could utilize water pumped (manually if needed) from the pools, and later directly from the ocean. This would make the plumbing non-potable, but prevent the decks from becoming a flowing bio-hazard.

Tankers have utilized large kites to reduce fuel costs and aid in propulsion. Availability of such apparatus may have value for ships in the same predicament as the Triumph.

There are probably many other safety issues that will come to light, as the safety of cruise lines is discussed among media and bloggers. With all the discussion, its worthwhile noting that while incidents actually happen quite frequently on cruises, largely they are mitigated without the passenger being inconvenienced or even made aware. Cruise companies are in the business of keeping their ships full of happy passengers, and thrive with repeat business. They cannot sustain their business if the ship and product is not up to the expectation of the customer.

While every savvy traveler should be aware of the potential discomforts, and even worst case scenarios while cruising, its good to know that 100's of 1000's of travelers sail annually without great inconvenience. In fact, they are more likely to get all the irritating discomforts on the flights to/from port, then they ever will as part of the cruise.

The World is Now More Accessible Than Ever - Explore and Enjoy It!

The world is now more accessible than ever before. Twenty percent (62 million) of the U.S. population has some form of disability, and the number of these individuals is increasing daily. These people need to, want to, and can travel. If you’re part of that twenty percent, a world of travel awaits you.

Travel professionals such as myself who are accessible travel advocates certified by SpecialNeeds Group, the leading global provider of special needs equipment for the travel industry, have unique, specialized knowledge about how to help individuals with disabilities enjoy a wonderful, hassle-free and memorable trip.

Here are a few tips from Special Needs Group to ensure that when your next travel opportunity arises, you are ready to go.

Outline your travel needs

Take time to evaluate the logistics of your trip in relation to your ability to keep pace. What modes of transportation will you be using? Airplane, motor coach, train, ship, transit vans for ground transfers? Make a list, referring to relevant brochures, your trip organizer or travel agent to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Now, make a list of your specific requirements. Be honest: what types of special needs equipment do you depend on at home? What do you use or need (or wish you had!) when shopping, sightseeing locally, dining out or going to the movies, attending concerts, the theater, street fairs or sporting events at home?

Can you hear and see clearly without special auditory equipment or visual aides? How far can you walk without a rest break? Are stairs difficult? Can you get in and out of the tub or shower at home without handgrips or other assistance?

Travel, whether solo or in a group, is no time for roughing it or trying to “tough it out.” If a wheelchair, scooter or portable oxygen will make your trip easier, place that item on your list. Many people who do not use wheelchairs or walkers at home feel more comfortable using these mobility aides for tour and excursions. In fact, most of Special Needs Group’s wheelchair and scooter rentals are to individuals who only use such aides when traveling.

Plan Ahead

If you already own a scooter or portable oxygen, it’s important to know the policy and procedures for bringing that equipment onboard all the transport vehicles included in your itinerary, from planes to taxis to ferry boats. Does that transport have a way to stow your scooter or wheelchair? Is oxygen allowed on board? Some airlines prohibit certain types of batteries, such as wet cell batteries, or oxygen cylinders. Airlines operate under strict rules, so there may be packing procedures to follow if they do allow the equipment. Keep in mind, most airlines need at least 48 hours’ notice to make special arrangements, and be prepared to fill out forms.

Overall, cruise ships are more lenient in allowing oxygen, but some disallow certain types of oxygen. All require that the oxygen be delivered to the ship, and that you have enough for the entire voyage. Oxygen may never be brought aboard in your luggage. Requirements vary, so check your cruise line for proper instructions. Again, documentation and paperwork are required.

Whether you are headed for a cruise ship, hotel or all-inclusive resort, double check for wheelchair access at that venue, plus any venues you will be visiting on the trip. Confirm that accessible hotel rooms, resort accommodations or ship staterooms are available for your travel dates. The earlier you book, the better your chances of securing fully accessible accommodations. And early booking increases your chances of securing a ground floor hotel room or cruise stateroom near the elevator, if these issues are important.

Check on the access to public rooms, restaurants, bars, toilets, the swimming pool, hot tub, beach area and other amenities. Are there TDD phone devices? How will you get in and out of the shower or bathtub? Are there flashing lights to accommodate hearing? Braille room numbers? Knowing in advance the scope of your needs gives you time to arrange advance rentals of any necessary equipment, scheduled to arrive when you do. Everything from scooters, lifts, ramps, TDD kits and special mattresses, including special needs cribs, is available for rental.

Will road travel or car excursions be part of the trip? Many car rental companies have vehicles that are modified for drivers or passengers with mobility limitations. Check ahead to make sure a suitable vehicle will be available for your travel dates. If you will be hiring a car or van, make sure the company is aware of your special needs.

When traveling with a limitation or disability, full travel insurance for medical coverage abroad and trip cancellation insurance are even more important and strongly advised.

Ask the Right Questions

When making the final bookings, be sure you ask the right questions, even if the accommodations or cruise stateroom are categorized as “accessible.”

For example, are doorways wide enough for the largest wheelchairs? Do the doors open outwards or into the room?

Are all the public areas of the hotel, resort or ship accessible? Do you need to make special arrangements in the dining room to accommodate the wheelchair or scooter?

Will the bathroom facilities truly fit your needs? Is the bathroom large enough for the wheelchair or scooter? Is there a roll-in shower? Grab-bars?

Are there facilities for companion/assistance animals?

Are there shopping and entertainment facilities close by if you are staying at a hotel or resort?

On shore excursions or tours, does the van have a lift and method for transporting wheelchairs and scooters?

Simply stated, don’t take anything for granted. It’s easy to arrange for almost every situation, and the world is wonderfully accessible, once you know what’s needed, what’s available and how to find the necessary equipment.
