The One Fund Boston Announces Distribution Process

Claim forms due June 15, payments to be made by June 30 The One Fund Boston, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Administrator Kenneth Feinberg today released the final distribution Protocol, which outlines how initial funds raised by The One Fund will be distributed at the end of June.

The Protocol and claim forms are available at www.onefundboston.org. Claim forms are also being mailed to potential claimants who registered through The One Fund Boston website. “The outpouring of support for The One Fund has been unprecedented in my experience,” Feinberg said. “We remain committed to channeling that generosity to assist those most impacted by the bombings and to do so by the end of June.”

Mailings will be sent today to potential claimants and June 15 will be the deadline for claimants to register for benefits. A single claim form should be submitted for each eligible claimant. Claims will be reviewed by June 30, when payments will be distributed. Any individual claimant may request an in-person or telephonic meeting with Ken Feinberg.

Requests to meet with Ken and questions regarding claim forms should be directed to claimantservices@onefundboston.org or by telephone to (866) 298-2951. Two public meetings were held last week at Boston Public Library’s Rabb Lecture Hall to solicit feedback from the community on a Draft Protocol, which was made available to the public on May 6.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Menino today announced the formation of The One Fund Boston, the purpose of which is to raise money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded during Monday’s Boston Marathon. “I am humbled by the outpouring of support by the business community and individuals who are united in their desire to help; The One Fund Boston will act as a central fund to receive much needed financial support,” Governor Patrick said. “At moments like this, we are one state, one city, and one people.” According to Mayor Menino, support from the business community was immediate. “Within an hour, I had calls from business leaders and local philanthropists who, like me, were heartbroken by the impact this hideous tragedy has had on individuals, their families, and friends. And they want to do everything they can to help these people physically and psychologically in the future.” The cornerstone donation to The One Fund Boston is a $1 million commitment from John Hancock. “John Hancock is honored to contribute to The One Fund Boston, aiding those who were affected by this terrible event,” said Craig Bromley, President. “The Boston Marathon is about courage and resilience and community. (Boston - March 8, 2013) Treasurer Steven Grossman and House Speaker Robert DeLeo will visit East Boston Savings Bank on Meridian Street in Maverick Square on Monday, March 11th to recognize the bank for accepting a deposit that brings the total amount of money the Treasury’s Small Business Banking Partnership has at work in Massachusetts community banks to more than $300 million. The Small Business Banking Partnership moves Treasury cash reserve funds typically held by large national and international financial institutions and deposits them in amounts of up to $10 million in Massachusetts banks. In exchange for the infusion of new deposits, the banks sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signaling their intent to enhance their loan portfolios to small credit-worthy Massachusetts businesses. House Preserves $9M in Local Aid

BOSTON – State Representative Carlo P. Basile joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in approving a $115 million supplemental budget that stops the Governor from taking 1% from the $899 million unrestricted general government aid account, thus preserving $9 million. “I commend my colleagues in the House for voting to preserve these monies that have proven essential in this economic downturn,” said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. “Aware of the widespread concern amongst constituents and state officials alike, we will once again look to maintain local aid as a top priority as the FY ‘14 budget-balancing process begins.” “Particularly during tough economic times, we have to do all we can to protect the vital programs funded through local aid,” said Chairman Brian S. Dempsey of the House Ways and Means Committee. “We understand how essential this funding is for our communities. Local aid is a priority and, with this vote, the House continues to prove that fact.” “We applaud the members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for standing with their cities and towns and preserving $9 million in essential local aid,” said Geoffrey C. House of Representatives Passes Unemployment Insurance Rate Freeze Legislation

BOSTON – State Representative Carlo P. Basile joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation that freezes a scheduled increase in the unemployment insurance assessment paid by all employers. “At the open of this session, I stood before the House membership and called for support of another unemployment insurance rate freeze to help lessen the burden of this recession on businesses,” said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. “In these tough economic times, it remains ever important that we pass legislation to help stimulate business expansion and create job opportunities.” “We continue to work hard to balance the needs of employers and employees in Massachusetts,” said Chairman Brian S. Dempsey of the House Committee on Ways and Means. “By freezing the unemployment insurance rate, we are protecting our Commonwealth’s businesses from additional hardship, which in turn safeguards current jobs and maintains vital support services for those workers who are struggling to recover from the Great Recession.” “This was a wise and necessary decision to lessen the burden on businesses during these tough economic times. This freeze will provide employers the breathing room they need to grow and prosper.” Carlo P. Basile (D - East Boston) Chairman of the Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs said. “As a legislature, we need to help and support businesses in any way we can to ensure a stable and positive economic future.” The unemployment system run by the Commonwealth is primarily funded by the state’s employers. By law, as the funds in the unemployment system become depleted, employers’ contributions would increase. Freezing the rate at Schedule E will save the average employer from having a near 30% increase for unemployment insurance per employee and workers would continue to receive the same benefits under this rate freeze. Furthermore the bill reduces the appropriations for non-executive offices by 1% and addresses items that require additional funding or corrective language. For example, the supplemental budget draws $30M from the Stablization Fund to address a deficit caused by the Hinton Drug Lab case; however, after this draw, the state maintains a healthy balance of $1.2B in the rainy day fund. This legislation also includes spending provisions for operating deficiencies of immediate need that include $45M for Homeless Family Shelters and $3M for unexpected costs to state agencies as a result of Hurricane Sandy among others.

From Fox25 News: EAST BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A facade fell off an East Boston church and landed on the sidewalk. It happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church on London Street. SKYFOX video showed some green facade siding from the roof on the ground. No one was injured. A Boston Fire Department spokesman said the church was constructed between 1870 and 1871. Commuters Urged to Pay Close Attention to Developments Over the Next 24 Hours (BOSTON - Feb. 6, 2013) Mayor Thomas M. Menino today directed City Departments to immediately prepare for a winter storm that could bring potential blizzard-like conditions and hurricane-force gusts this weekend. The latest forecasts show that Boston could see 1-2 feet of snow between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon. Snow drifts of 3-4 feet are possible, and during the heaviest periods, expected on Saturday, snow could fall at 2-4 inches per hour. Coastal Flooding is also possible Friday night. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Friday morning through Saturday afternoon. “This is a very serious storm that is developing,” Mayor Menino said. “Safety is our number one priority, and my Snow Team will continue to monitor the situation so that Boston is ready for whatever comes our way.” There is still a lot of uncertainty about the storm’s exact path, size, and duration. The City will continue to monitor the latest weather models and forecasts and will update the public with further information as it becomes available.

Red Cross volunteers assist residents in East Boston fire

American Red Cross volunteers were on scene at this morning's five-alarm fire assisting almost a dozen residents of East Boston. First responders said 23 lived in the building where firefighters battled cold and frozen hydrants while knocking down the fire. Red Cross volunteers offered snacks and water – and blankets – to those on scene. By 6 a.m., one family of six had elected to stay in a hotel paid for by donors to the Red Cross, and others were finding family and friends to stay with. Read more from the American Red Cross.

Focus on unleashing human potential through education, partnerships for learning, progress for women, and availability of middle-income housing In front of an audience of residents, political leaders, and dignitaries, Mayor Thomas M. Menino tonight delivered his annual State of the City address at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall. In addition to several other commitments, the Mayor announced $30 million in new funding for underperforming schools, a pilot program to bring online learning to Boston’s neighborhoods, enhanced public safety partnerships, and several initiatives to achieve equity for women in the workplace. Mayor Menino emphasized that the commitment of residents and political leaders to each other, and the City of Boston, will continue to propel the city forward in 2013. “Our progress is real. Our future is bright. The state of our city is striking, sound, and strong,” Mayor Menino said in his address. “Our untapped human potential is enough to power Boston’s growth if we muster the courage and the creativity to unleash it.” Before introducing plans for the City’s future, the Mayor expressed his sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support he has received over the past few months. The State of the City was the Mayor’s 20th annual address and 15th State of the City address. He has given five inaugural addresses. Advancing Education Mayor Menino tonight announced the start of a new, $30 million investment to continue quality improvements in Boston Public Schools. Over the next three years, the funds will be used to extend freedoms in hiring and learning time, as well as facility upgrades, at schools that require high support. The Mayor recognized the tremendous work of his External Advisory Committee on School Choice, which will soon make a final recommendation following a year-long community process to transform the way Boston students are assigned to schools. Mayor Menino acknowledged that quality improvement must be taken together with student assignment reform in order for the District to reach new heights. “The best way to celebrate our accomplishments is not with applause, but with an encore,” Mayor Menino said. “I’m fighting to gain the power to extend freedoms in hiring and learning time to many more schools across the district. If a school has to fail before it gets flexibility, it’s not just the school that is failing, it’s us!” In addition to the Quality Improvement Funds, Mayor Menino emphasized the importance of the legislative proposals he filed earlier this month, a second phase of education reform building from the success of his 2010 legislative package. Included in the 2012 legislative package: Extending “turn-around” powers and support grants to Level 3 schools, including High-Support Schools; Eliminating the cap on In-District charter schools; Extending the school day for additional instruction and professional development; Leveling the playing field for charter schools and District schools. Making Boston the Premier City for Working Women According to the US Census Bureau, fewer than 30 percent of businesses in Boston are owned by women. While this puts Boston on par with national averages, Mayor Menino acknowledged the numbers fall short of aspirations for the City and its working women. The Mayor tonight announced several proposals as Boston seeks to become the first major city in the U.S. to achieve pay equity for women. “To outshine all cities we must unlock the potential of all of our women,” Mayor Menino said. “Recent college graduates are earning less than their male classmates in the same jobs and with the same degrees. We can do better than that.” The Mayor’s proposals include: · Appointing a Women’s Workforce Council: Mayor Menino will appoint a Women’s Workforce Council, the first of its kind in the country. Together with the Mayor, the Council will tackle challenges facing Boston’s working women. The first priority will be the wage gap, as Boston seeks to become the first major city to achieve pay equity for women. The Council will include executives, entrepreneurs, industry and workforce leaders, and young women to represent the next generation. · Improving access to quality child care: In addition to the investment the City has already made in providing quality early education to more than 2,400 children in Boston Public Schools, Mayor Menino announced a new, $1 million low-interest loan fund to assist family-based early education providers invest in safe, quality child care environments. · Launching “Women on Main”: A networking program aimed to better connect the City’s female-owned Main Streets businesses and foster peer-to-peer learning, “Women on Main” will enable the City to learn more about the unique challenges of female entrepreneurs, and provide them with the tools needed to grow and thrive. Connecting Boston’s Neighborhoods to the Knowledge Economy Mayor Menino will launch a new pilot, BostonX, that will partner with MIT, Harvard, and edX on an experiment in blended, online learning. BostonX would bring place-based enhancements to online edX learners and would help diminish the skills gap facing Boston residents. Mayor Menino will first launch BostonX in neighborhood community centers. The BostonX spots would provide public computing capacity and basic computer training; online learning training; connections – in-person and electronic – to university or community college faculty, staff, and graduate students; and services for career counseling and job transitioning. The BostonX and edX teams envision then bringing these connections to high school classrooms and public libraries. “Imagine a day when our community centers are little campuses in their own neighborhoods, full of vibrant groups of neighbors, exchanging ideas and making progress together,” Mayor Menino said. “This initiative is a first, important step in that direction.” Improving Public Safety Mayor Menino recognized the comprehensive prevention strategies responsible for another drop in homicides in 2012. Citing recent national and local tragedies resulting from gun violence, Mayor Menino vowed to continue his advocacy for common sense gun reform at the national level. “Mayor Bloomberg and I will keep working with almost one thousand mayors and over one million Americans,” Mayor Menino said. “I ask you to stand with us on guns to say enough is enough.” The Mayor also announced the task force responsible for a recent crime sweep in the Bowdoin-Geneva community would extend its work for the rest of the year, emphasizing that those seeking to bring guns and drugs into Boston’s neighborhoods will be brought to justice. The Mayor also announced the City will work with partners to support teens with autism in summer jobs and expand the City’s inclusive after-school programs. Boston will adapt to meet the needs of a growing population of seniors – projected to be 100,000 by 2017. Additionally, the Mayor committed to a new effort to make more city services “same day services,” as well as update climate work to reflect the threats the City faces from storms like Sandy. Boston Business Journal: Meridian Interstate Bancorp’s (NASDAQ: EBSB) full year profit beat 2011’s thanks in large part to the $4.8 million June sale of its stake in Hampshire First Bank. The Mayor's Host Community Advisory Committee executive director Elizabeth Dello Russo will make a presentation on the proposal to put a casino at Suffolk Downs. In the last HCAC meeting (October 19, 2012, recapped in this Globe article), Dello Russo and other committee members "told the crowd that the city and the Mayor’s Host Community Advisory Committee are still collecting questions from residents and working to get answers that would be provided at a later meeting yet to be scheduled." The Mayor's Host Community Advisory Committee, a group designed to welcome a casino into our community, has been holding these meetings for nearly a year — with no community questions answered. Will they ever be answered? And how will we trust the answers of a group whose main task is to make the casino happen in our community? Mayor Menino Launches 12th Annual EITC Campaign Last year’s campaign served 11,500 taxpayers, returned $18 million in credits and refunds Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced the launch of the City of Boston’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign, commencing its 12th tax season. Spearheaded by the Mayor’s Office of Jobs and Community Services, in collaboration with non-profit, corporate and community partners, the program provides low- and moderate-income taxpayers with free financial services, in a multi-pronged effort to reduce poverty in the City of Boston. During the 2012 tax season, the Boston EITC Campaign served 11,500 taxpayers, returning a total of $18 million in credits and refunds. “This program provides free financial assistance to the hardworking people across the City of Boston and helps them make the most of their annual tax return,” Mayor Menino said. “I urge all eligible residents to visit their nearest location, as we work to surpass last year’s tremendous results.” This year’s effort kicked off at the City’s newest tax prep site, the Tierney Community Center in the newly-rehabilitated Old Colony Housing Development in South Boston, as the Boston Housing Authority mobilizes to connect their residents to this valuable service. From January to April, 25 community-based tax sites will provide free tax preparation and asset building services to eligible households. Through the Ambassadors Program, tax preparation will be delivered at various sites in eight languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Somali. Residents interested in learning more about the program should visit: http://www.bostontaxhelp.org/. The website provides eligibility information, as well as a list of all available locations and operating hours. An expanded wealth building strategy is also being launched this tax season. At eight tax sites there will be a “Financial Check-up” provided to all taxpayers. This “Check-up” will allow for a cross-trained volunteer to provide intake, credit advising, a FICO score and a benefits referral to provide some financial guidance to the taxpayers. More than 75 volunteers are currently trained as Financial Guides, with the goal of having 100 serving at the eight sites.

Mayor Menino, City Agencies Monitoring Potentially Heavy Snow Storm

Winter Weather Advisory Issued Mayor Thomas M. Menino and agencies around the City of Boston are monitoring a potentially serious winter weather event. A preliminary forecast indicates that from after 4 p.m. Monday into Tuesday morning, the storm could bring 2-6 inches of snow, with some periods of heavy snow squalls possible. Additionally, temperatures over the next week are not expected to rise above freezing, making road clearing a top priority for public safety. Temperatures will hover around 20 degrees all week, with lows in the single digits. Mayor Menino continues to monitor the situation to determine if a Snow Emergency and Parking Ban need to be declared. Members of the Mayor's Snow Team met again today to discuss the latest storm related information and response plans for the weekend. Most recently, in a scene that has replayed itself over and over in every Boston neighborhood, two pit bulls went on a rampage in East Boston that only ended when a police officer had to discharge his weapon on a public street to stop the attacks. Every year data collected from the city’s animal control department consistently shows that pit bulls attack both humans and other dogs at a far greater rate than any other breed. Friends of Meridian Street: Taxis Are Out of Bounds! "There are again large numbers of cabs driving down Meridian Street to Chelsea early mornings from Logan Airport after shift change. This has been going on since the reopening of the refurbished Chelsea Bridge that cabs, trucks and buses from Logan are required to use. (By not using the tunnel to Boston) This is causing both excess traffic on Meridian Street and adds a large amount of vehicle emissions to our residential neighborhoods that effects the health of our children and families. We request that this serious problem be addressed and stopped."

Boston Police Looking for Public’s Help in Efforts to Locate a Piece of Luggage

On August 27, 2012, at approximately 6:00am, officers from District A-7 (East Boston) were called to the McKay School on Cottage Street in East Boston. On arrival, officers discovered a woman in her forties suffering from facial trauma. EMS responded and transported the victim to a local hospital for additional medical treatment. The victim told police two men forced her into a vehicle and sexually assaulted her. She described her attackers as Hispanic males. Suspect #1 is described as a male, approximately 30 to 40 years of age, with a heavy build and a mustache. The second suspect is described as a male in his twenties with a thin build. Investigators are asking anyone who may have been in the Jeffries Point neighborhood in the early morning hours of August 27, 2012 to contact the Boston Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit with information. EAST BOSTON, MASS.— With Suffolk Downs now officially in the running for one of three casino licenses that will be awarded statewide, the review process for the racetrack and its development partner, Caesars Entertainment, begins. Gaming officials ensure that this review process will be a thorough, careful analysis of each developer’s financial viability and business practices. Upon investigating Caesars, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission should reject Suffolk Downs’ application to build a casino. On the surface, Caesars may seem like a top-performing, admirable corporation in a booming industry. But when you pull back the diamond-studded curtain, one finds a debt-saddled company that mistreats its employees, preys on the vulnerability of problem gamblers, shirks its tax responsibility, and secretly knows the casino market is saturated and in decline. In Caesars, Suffolk Downs bringing a Trojan horse into a family-oriented, tight-knit neighborhood. We urge the racetrack to sever ties with Caesars. We urge the City of Boston to stand against dangerous businesses preying on its residents. (Note: We have still received no acknowledgement of our letter to Mayor Menino asking him to apply the same scrutiny to Caesars as he recently did to Chick-fil-A) And we ask the Gaming Commission to reject outright any casino application with Caesars’ name on it. BPS School Choice Meeting Meeting Scheduled for July 17

BOSTON – Boston Public Schools (BPS) will host additional community meetings in July to talk about ‘what we are hearing’ in our analysis of community feedback and the next steps in the student assignment redesign process. A report on the feedback is available on our new website, www.bostonschoolchoice.org. In 25 meetings and in an on-line survey BPS heard from residents living in every ZIP code in Boston, with two exceptions: 02163 (the Harvard campus) and 02199 (the Prudential Center). About half the people who participated are current BPS parents, and the other half do not have children in school. BOSTON, MA, March 12, 2012 – The deadline for this spring’s Grow Boston Greener (GBG) program is Monday, March 19. These are competitive mini-grants that provide $500 - $2,500 of funding for tree plantings in neighborhoods throughout Boston. Trees must be planted in the City of Boston, with volunteers, on public property or privately held publicly accessible areas such as schools, parks, greenways, gardens, grounds of health and social service agencies, and in projects of community development corporations. The Grow Boston Greener program was launched on Arbor Day, April 30, 2007 when an inventory of the City’s trees showed that Boston had an overall tree canopy cover of 29%. The GBG vision is to plant an additional 100,000 trees by 2020 to increase the urban tree canopy to 35% and make Boston a cooler, greener, healthier city. The goals of GBG are to increase tree canopy, mitigate heat island effect, reduce energy consumption, improve air quality and improve storm water management. GBG focuses not only on planting trees, but also on the community-based stewardship activities necessary to ensure the trees' survival. As Boston’s leading grassroots environmental organization, Boston Natural Areas Network manages the GBG program in partnership with the City of Boston. Funding for the GBG program is provided by the support of corporate and philanthropic donors through the Fund for Parks and Recreation in Boston. Applicants must be non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status and their partners, such as community gardeners, friends of parks, schools and library groups, civic and neighborhood associations. Organizations without tax-exempt status can apply with a 501(c)(3) organization serving as the fiscal agent. To apply, complete and submit a GBG application form, a property owner consent form and a signed watering and maintenance agreement by March 19, 2012. Site visits for all applications will be conducted from March 20 to April 6, 2012. Applicants will be notified of decisions during the week of April 2, 2012. Trees need to be planted by June 3, 2012. Ethanol transportation safety hearing in Revere on Thursday

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is holding a public hearing on a permit to upgrade its facility on filled tidelands being sought by Global Oil on Thursday, March 8th at 6pm. The public hearing will take place at Revere City Hall in the City Council Chambers 281 Broadway Revere. Please consider participating in this public hearing and/or submitting written comments to the DEP by March 28. Global Oil located in Revere, MA is proposing to bring freight trains carrying ethanol to their facilities along the Chelsea River to Revere. Ethanol is an alcohol that is mixed with gasoline for sale to gas stations, and is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid that burns at extremely high temperatures. Alcohol-resistant foam is necessary to extinguish ethanol fires along with specially trained fire-fighters. Global Oil is proposing to bring 60-car trains; each car will carry 30,000 gallons of ethanol, into its facility 2x per week, every week. This will result in 187,200,000 gallons of ethanol on freight trains each year. The route of the train is extremely dangerous as it will travel through densely populated residential neighborhoods and commercial centers. Should a fire or explosion occur, hundreds of thousands of people and dozens of businesses could be impacted. The train is likely to travel through the following cities and towns: Fitchburg, Leominster, Shirley, Ayer, Acton, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham, Cambridge, Somerville, Everett, Boston, Chelsea and Revere. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is holding a public hearing on a permit to upgrade its facility on filled tidelands being sought by Global Oil on Thursday, March 8th at 6pm. This legislation requires that the Executive Office of Health and Human Services and the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development, among other agencies, enter into a community housing and services memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU would include an action plan to coordinate the procurement and availability of community-based supportive services and subsidies for new and existing housing for residents with very low incomes. The games begin each and every Wednesday night on February 1, 2012 at the Salesian Boys & Girls Club of East Boston and continue through April 11, 2012. Then the playoffs commence, and Wally Bowe will be looking down from high above courtside as Johnny Most often extolled in his raspy voice, smiling and being among the children he so loved. The Salesian Boys & Girls Club of East Boston will field six basketball teams for teens between 14 years old and 19 years old from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., 3 games each Wednesday night. Consisting of two 20 minute halves (running time until the last minute when stop time takes place), each team will be wearing a specially made T-shirt bearing the name of tournament – Wally Bowe. “Wally was instrumental in doing things for teenagers and this keeps his memory alive with kids and their families,” Fr. John Nazzaro, executive director of the Club emphasized. “Each child receives a free T-shirt to wear, symbolic of our respect and love for Wally.” The teams competing in the tournament comprise of a diverse cross-section of teens from all over East Boston. The teams are Dynasty, Bad Boys, Bean Town Bombers, J-Point, Los Papas, and Devon. Ironically, the Wally Bowe /Salesian In House Basketball Tournament begins after the Club’s week-long celebration of the feast of St. John Bosco (January 31st) , founder of the Salesian religious order, and two years to the exact date that Wally passed away. The Salesian Boys & Girls has continued to remember Wally in the last two years in many special ways. At the Community Breakfast held in June, 2010, he was posthumously awarded The Don Bosco Award. Wally, as most would agree, will be right in the middle of the action, looking down, encouraging competition, fair play, and, of course, tenacious defense.

Neighborhoods will see cleaner streets due to better coordination with trash collection schedule Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Public Works Department today announced new changes to the City of Boston’s street sweeping program to better coordinate with weekly trash collection. Over the next two years, the City will phase in changes that ensure most streets are swept either one or two days after trash collection. Additionally, in the South End neighborhood, the program will run longer by two months, operating from March to December each year instead of April to November as in previous years. “It has always been a very high priority for my administration to keep our wonderful city clean,” Mayor Menino said. “We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our daily operations and by realigning the street sweeping schedule to match the weekly trash collection operations, we’re smartly maximizing the potential of each program to keep our streets clean.” To prepare for the beginning of the 2012 street sweeping season, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) has updated street signs in South Boston, East Boston and Charlestown. Beginning in January, city crews will replace every sign in the South End to add two months (March and December) to the annual street sweeping program and change sweeping days to follow trash collection more closely. Later this winter signs in Roxbury, Allston and Brighton will be replaced to reflect the new changes as well. Residents who are concerned about remembering the new changes should sign up for the City of Boston’s Know Tow automated alert system that reminds users to move their cars the night before their street is swept so they are not towed via a host of methods – text message, phone call or email.

State House News Service: In a blow to casino opponents who are running out of options to stop the expansion of gaming in Massachusetts, Attorney General Martha Coakley on Wednesday ruled that a proposed referendum to repeal the new law allowing casinos and slots cannot legally be placed on the ballot. Coakley wrote in a ruling to Secretary of State William Galvin on Wednesday that the law signed by Gov. Deval Patrick last month was “not lawfully the subject of a referendum petition” because it included at least two monetary appropriations that are exempt from voter repeal efforts. News: Citizen effort to repeal casino deal moves forward

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011, Boston, MA - A diverse group of citizens from across the state today made the first step to launch a referendum petition on the controversial casino bill recently signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick. John Ribeiro of Winthrop, head of the newly formed ballot committee Repeal the Casino Deal, filed the required ten voter signatures with the Secretary of State’s Office. Under the Massachusetts Constitution, citizens have the right to challenge bad laws through the petition process. The number of certified signatures required to get on the ballot is 1½% of the votes cast in the 2010 statewide election for Governor which the Secretary of State has calculated to be 34,456. The entire process needs to be completed in a 90 period following the signing of the bill into law. If successful, Bay Staters will have the opportunity to cast their vote on the issue as part of the November 2012 ballot. It will be up to Attorney General Martha Coakley to ultimately decide whether the casino bill can go before voters. The drafters of H.3807 inserted language making incidental “appropriations” to the Governor, the Attorney General and the non-existent Gaming Commission to position the bill as a “appropriation” that is excluded from the referendum process. "This is one of the most significant laws passed in Massachusetts in over a hundred years,” Ribeiro said. “Gambling interests have spent more than $20 million to have their way.
